Oil Filter Change

ya $hit!.. well as i'm the only one that said anything...ya GOT ME! Having said that, and based on what you say above (by pass built in), I decided to go take a look at my new filter and by golly! you're right! I never noticed it before but just inside the filter, looking from the left side, you can see a little "line" in the shape of a circle on the 4th element fold. It's sorta perforated. I did some research into this and discovered that, if the filter becomes plugged, the oil pressure will force the perforations to tear, thus blowing a hole in the side of that element fold and allowing the oil to pass thru. KEWL! -
Global warming...HA! I'm beginning to think that on a "global scale", we on the west coast got left outta the equation ....except for those unfortunate folks down in Calif... gawd I wouldn't want their weather related problems but some of that warm sun would sure be nice.

You can get AVG 7.5 free version. Only issue with it is it does tend to cause some things to load a bit slower but if you have a fast computer, you won't notice it. Mine is almost 6 yrs old I think.. AMD Athlon 1800 .. 1.53 Ghz, 512Mb RAM... this puppy still runs pretty quick & I have Windows XP, Office XP Pro, Corel Draw 9, & Visual Studio 5 loaded plus a few other smaller apps.

Oil Filter Change
SilvrT replied to r_squared432's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Factory shipping plug??? Never seen such a thing...can you elaborate? If you don't put the washer in, the spring will chew up the rubber seal on the filter and eventually push itself inside of the filter. This will cause some oil to bypass the filter. I'm thinking the purpose of the spring is to keep the filter in a "set" position, in line with the holes in the bolt as unless I'm mistaken, the oil is fed through that bolt to the inside of the filter, pushed through the filter and back into the engine. Without the spring, one or more of the holes might be on the outside of the filter seal, causing some of the oil to bypass the filter. Correct me if I'm wrong coz that's just how I see it working. -

Wife & I have next to nothing for retirement savings; however, we will be debt free and will own our car & scoot outright. We don't have a house. We plan on buying an older mobile home, parking it on a lot somewhere in the warmer part of the province, and living there for the summer. Winter we'll travel south on the bike, pulling a trailer... tenting here and there, hooking up with others and staying over here and there...maybe stopping for a week or longer and doing a bit of work for board & room... whatever. Eventually we'll get too old for that and then our kids can look after us!!

stator change
SilvrT replied to MikeM8560's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
someone somewhere in here mentioned that when you put the stator cover back on, the magnetic forces might give you a problem and to get around this, find a couple longer bolts of the same thread. Cut the heads off and finger thread them in. Use as a guide for slipping the cover on straight. -
These lights you're referring to... is this for US production coz I don't see that here in Canada...at least not on my car but then again, it is 4 yrs old so maybe things have changed since.

no need to shout!!! I can understand that...guess it takes more to give some folks peace of mind.

Good points you make; however, there's a lot of controversy over the bolded statement. It makes "some" logical sense to me but at the same time, couldn't those metal particles also do damage?

Squeeze... I'm surprised your still getting updates ... is that the FREE version? Seems to me they stopped providing updates for that a while ago and forced everyone to upgrade to 7.5 free. ???

I change my oil once a season in the scoot. As far as oil getting "black", crap, it gets black shortly after you change the oil... the color of the oil doesn't have any thing to do with its viscosity level and it's when the viscosity of the oil breaks down when it's going to cause problems. Today's oils are designed to maintain their viscosity much longer than years ago (when it was recommended to change at 3000 miles). My personal feeling is that if anyone is changing their oil every 3000 miles under normal operation, then hey, it's your money to waste but I'm not going to waste mine.

LOL, it would seem to me that shifting from 4th to 5th at 31mph would cause the engine to lug severely which would IMO, cause more damage than do good. Drive it normally but don't keep it at a set rpm for extended periods.....and you may want to look at this... http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Consumables.html and this... http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Well, you're in the right place as "confused" is a prerequisite to be here

Further to my above comments... and I'm just rambling again coz I have nothing else to do .... Suppose you own a Heating business and you're a dealer for a specific brand of home heaters. You install a number of these heaters but over the years, they've constantly caused problems between you, your customer, and the manufacturer. The problem is an incessantly noisy fan. The manufacturer has provided very little support other than a special lube and a balancer but even with that, in most cases it doesn't fix the problem completely. Over the years you've lost many customers over this and have spent hours upon hours trying to rectify the problem to the customer's satisfaction to the point that it has cost you a lot in lost income. Unfortunately though, you're stuck to using this brand of heater. Finally you give up and instead of trying to fix a problem that isn't fixable, you begin telling your customers "hmmm yeah... it's a bit noisy but there's nothing wrong with it... that's how they sound... you'll have to get used to it". And you go on your merry way to the next customer having spent little or no time dealing with this problem. Even though the customer doesn't like it, he accepts it -OR- he gets tired of it and starts looking for ways to fix it himself -OR- he gets on the blower with the manufacturer who then gets in touch with you and gets you to install the special lube and balancer. The odds are that out of all the customers you "put off", 1 in 10 will do this. so that's 9 that you didn't have to spend any time with trying to fix an unfixable problem. OK...enuf rambling... LOL

Just a comment about this... these 2nd gen's are now what...8 years since the first one? ... One would think that since this problem has been popping up, here and there, over the years, as often as it appears to have been, that MOST dealers would be AWARE of it and have had at least SOME experience with it. I mean, even if only selling 2 or 3 RSV's a year (and they must have sold equal as many RSTD's), surely the odds are that they (the dealer) would have come across this clutch whine issue at least ONCE in those 8 years. Further, if they haven't (or say they haven't as in playing dumb), surely in communications with other dealers (which they all do at one time or another) they would have heard about it. Additionally, by playing dumb about an issue that they know cannot be 100% rectified...maybe even not 50% rectified in all cases...by playing dumb they "pass the buck" because the customer (us) get's PO'd and goes elsewhere or we just accept what we been told and either ride it or sell it or try and fix it ourselves. These dealers talk and when such an issue comes up, they jointly and secretly agree to "play dumb". They're probably complaining to each other and Yamaha about how much of a hassle this "clutch whine" is and since Yamaha isn't stepping up to the table, the dealers play dumb with the customer, or in some way, put us off. Sorry, I'm rambling here but there's probably some truth in this somewhere?

without a "no wobble" choice, then all the ones that didn't choose anything are the one's without the wobble..... (hmmmm ... wonder how many there are?????)

Kit... I'm at work... I have a boring job...well, the job itself isn't boring ...it's just that I don't generally have a lot to do. I run a computer network for a small inbound call operator company. Everything is running smoothly and about all I generally have to do is some daily monitoring which doesn't take very long. It's one of those kind of positions where they don't really need a full-time person on-site but their bound by their contract to have one. So, I lucked out... great way to spend the last few years working before retirement. N-E-Wayz, it gives me a lot of time to razz people in here LOL
