I don't know anything about the Harley but you can always rent one for a day or weekend and see how you like it.

Hey guys take a chill pill. Haley's riders have an image as being big, tough, who gives a s@%$t attitude. Don't quit the forum because you read something you don't like. Give it right back or take it in the friendly poking fun it was meant to be. One of you guys do me a favor, take one of the Harley forums you are a member of and put a thread on the titled, I'm thinking of getting rid of my Ultra and thinking of buying a Yamaha Venture. Would like any recommendations. Then post the Yamaha bashing on this site. I'll bet you'll have plenty to post. So come on and loosen up a little. I guarantee that the Yamaha owners wish they had the same comradely that the Harley owners have. I'll admit it. There are dedicated Venture owners (and I'm one of them) but nothing compared to Harley. Come on take a deep breath and smile. You know you have met a lot of good people in this club. Harry

I figured as much but thanks anyway. Harry:sun:

Rick we've never met and I haven't been posting long but I hope you are not serious about leaving. I think Harley's are beautiful bikes. I have friends that ride Harley's and they will ride with me even though I ride Yamaha's, but They will not invite me to any evens they go to because they are afraid of the ridicule they will get for riding in with a Yamaha. Yes I admit there is some Harley bashing by some members but there are a lot taking up for Harley's also. I can guarantee if a Yamaha ride went to some of the Harley forums they would get bashed. This is a Venture site so naturally there is going to be some bashing of other brands and most of that is going to be Harley's. There is a lot of envy because Harley does have such a great following. The main thing that Harley gets bashed for is price. I have heard a lot of people talk about how well the Harley's quality has improved over the years. Even my die hard friends who own Harley's and will never own anything else joke about having to ride around with a tool box. I know their kidding and so does everyone else but it comes from the past when Harley wasn't as dependable. I really hope you change your mind and stay. Yes things are going to rub you the wrong way but I'll bet there is not one Yamaha rider in this forum that wants you to see you go. Harry:bang head:

Hey Shep I doubt if you can swing it but since the damage is to the left side if you can get the right engine guard let me know I would be very interested in it. Harry:thumbsup2:

I feel Harley will come through this. Even though I will probably never own a Harley ( because of the very reasons mentioned above) price, quality, etc., etc. I certainly hope and pray they stay in business. I have never owned an Indian either but it saddens me they went out of business. Can you imagine a country without Harley's. It just would not be the same. Hopefully the devoted following that Harley has built over the years will keep their company solvent and they will be able to expand their business again when times are better. But all this well wishing on my part is just that. Harley will have to get by without my help but I really hope they do. Harry:bluesbrother:

I have the Dakota and when the Frontier was upgraded a few years ago the Frontier with a 6 had more horsepower than the Dakota with the V8. I don't know how it is now but I have to assume it is still that way. I am not sure about gas mileage but I would be willing to bet the Frontier gets better gas mileage also. It's not quite as roomy as the Dakota but the bed is longer.

It's not just the private companies cutting back. Our government has been cutting back for years. Last time I went into a post office there was one clerk. The line was very long. The postal clerk said the other three clerks were there but were in the back eating lunch. They were ordered to eat lunch by the supervisor. In the good old days there would have been enough clerks to handle the customers and eat lunch. I am a retired air traffic control specialist. I worked for the busiest facility in the world. At the peak staffing in my area we had 76 people. When I took mandatory retirement we had 38 certified controllers and about 8 trainees. Traffic was up from 7,300 aircraft per day to about 9,300 aircraft per day when I left. Technology is a lot better now and allows us to work more traffic with fewer people. You know like a private company laying off three workers and putting in a machine to do their work. But still to make things work they eliminated a lot of rules in order for us to be able to keep up. Everyone use to be on the same pay scale but about 3 years ago the FAA implemented a new lower pay scale for new hires. These changes in my opinion were to lower the operating cost so it would be more attractive to sell it to a private company. So Harley and Microsoft and a lot of other companies are doing what our Federal Government has already done. The biggest difference is the private companies have to make a profit, the Federal Government doesn't.

I have nothing against Harley's it's a beautiful well made bike. But don't compare the best price you can find on a Harley's with some nut trying to sell a Royal Star for $3,000 dollars over MSRP. I can find you a brand new 08 RSV write now for under $16,000. So lets compare apples to apples. Harley's have come a long way with quality since the days of AMC or however it was that almost ruined Harley. Harley is lucky they survived that and if it were not for their loyal customers they would be out of business right now. Any company in the world would love to have the following that Harley has. Harley has the best marketing I have ever seen. I wish the other motorcycle companies had the same quality of marketing. Harley has the best selection of any dealer and the best after market parts for there machines. Like I said before if they were priced like the Jap bikes I would have one sitting right next to my Yamahas, but they are not. And to be honest with you if they did what it takes to be priced like the Jap bikes there quality would go down.

I put them on my RSV. They are not near as dark as the picture in the parts book. They look about like your tinted windshield. If your engine guard is bent a little the left and right side may fit a little different. Also limits adding highway pegs. Can still be done but you have to be careful when you fold the highway pegs up or you open the vents. It took me three or four tries to position everything just right.

I've got a 2002 Dakota 4x4 with a 4.7l V8. I love it. Before this one I had a 2000 Dakota 2 wheel drive with the same engine. I loved it. Before that I had a 96 Ram. I loved it. I have never had the front end touched on any of them. I got rid of the Ram because I want 4 doors and the Ram was to big. I got the 2000 Dakota 4 door as soon as it came out. I got rid of it because I wanted a 4x4. The 4x4 gets 15 city and 18 highway. The 2000 got 16 city and 20 highway. If your looking for mileage don't buy a truck. Harry:325:

It's my fault. I admit it. I should throw my money down the toilet and buy inferior quality over priced American made products like Harley's. I also have a Toyota. Don't tell anyone. Don't get me wrong I would love to have a Harley to go with my two Yamaha's if they were priced right.

Three guys in our club have 06 Stratoliners and they all love them. Plenty of power, great handling motorcycles. The only thing I am aware of is they had a recall on the 06 I believe. One of our members wrecked his because they had not had the recall at the time. I think it had to do with the throttle cable sticking or the bike accelerating on its own or something like that. Check with Yamaha to find out exactly what the recall was for and make sure the 06 your looking at either came out after the fix or make sure it had the fix. Sorry I can't be more specific but since I don't own one I didn't keep up with it. Harry:dancefool:

I have a Road Star with a Mustang seat in addition to my RSV. Great bike with a lot lower center of gravity especially with the Mustang seat. Great bike!. However I don't know how deep your pockets are but the Stratoliners I've set own feel unbelievably light. I guess it is the aluminum frame. I went with the Road Star because of all the aftermarket stuff you can put on them. The Stratoliners have a lot more accessories available now than they use to. One more rumor. I heard that in 2010 Yamaha was coming out with some new models? How many and what type I don't know. Good luck on whatever you decide. Harry:thumbsup2:

I'm not sure but if you check the web address it has a .au so I think this is a bike offered in another country so it has another name. I think the .au is Australia. Harry

Don't get anything shorter than 10'. Don't get a mess floor if you do you will have to beef the floor up or the mess will sag. If you have to beef up the mess floor you might as well get the wood floor. Keep a good eye on the gate also. Even the wood bottom floors have mess gates and the mess gate will start sagging also when you load and unload your RSV. If you get the trailer at Lowe's or someplace like that they will not alter it. If you go to a trailer sales store then you can have them weld an extra bar where you need it for extra support loading your RSV. Harry:mo money:

I'm sure you have a flash drive (or you should) so backup everything you want or need onto the flash drive. I got a 8 gig flash drive from Costco for $25. After you back up everything you need to the flash drive reformat the Hard drive. You will lose EVERYTHING but it is the only way you can be certain you get rid of the virus. There are a lot of good anti-virus programs out there like the ones mentioned above that get rid of viruses but if you have one and it's been affecting your computer for awhile you may be able to get rid of the virus but it may not be able to repair all your affected programs. I personally use AVG. But I keep it updated so I don't have any infections. HP's are slow anyway compaired to other brands but usually only booting up. Another problem with HP is they don't give you a Windows XP disk but I think you said you upgraded yours do just re-install Windows. Then re-install all the programs you have on the computer now then load everything on the flash drive. This is a lot of work but make sure your ani-virus is working before you load your flash drive just in case the virus is on the flash drive. You can scan the flash drive before you re-install it. After all this work your computer will run like it did when it was new. If you don't want to go this route then try one of the previous suggestions you can always use this as a last resort. Good luck, Harry:thumbsup2:

TAKE THE MONEY! Do what you can. Decide what damage you can live with if any. Get some friends with motorcycle repair experience to help you do the things that you don't feel comfortable fixing yourself and let Yamaha fix the rest. You may even save your deductible and make a little money.
-
One thing here in Ga. you can get your insurance company to repair the bike and they will get the money from the other party that was at fault. HOWEVER the claim goes against YOU. Your insurance may not go up but it still goes on your record as a claim and if you have another one guess what. My recommendation never have your insurance pay to have repairs made. Another thing is motorcycle parts are totally out of sight so it doesn't take a lot of damage on an older motorcycle to total it. I assume you are talking about your 07 so it will take a little more damage to total it. Basically it the repairs cost more than the Kelly Blue Book, NADA or whatever book the insurance company uses the bike is totaled. The insurance company would rather total a bike that is heavily damaged than repair it because there could be hidden damage that no one could find that may appear going down the road at 70 miles per hour. With that said if an insurance company does total your bike just tell them you would like to buy it back and they will tell you what the hight salvage bid is and what bid you would have to bid to win the bike back. Now if you do buy the bike back you have three options. 1) Turn around and try to sell it as is for more than you paid. 2) Part it out and you should make well over what you paid for the bike but a lot of work. 3) Rebuild it yourself and get a salvage title. With a salvage title if you were to sell it you would not get as much money for it but if you have no plans of selling it and you want to ride it for a long time it may be worth it to you. The inspection process is quite involved also if you plan on rebuilding it yourself. The bike I totaled was a 99 V-Star 650 and it was all cosmetic but since it was a 99 it was easily totaled. Harry

One last time: THE 'WHINE'!
YamaDuck replied to Bluesman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
First I don't think we should call the whine a problem. It is part of the bike. I have a 2000 RSV with no whine. I have about four friends around here that have RSV's. Two of the four I have riddin. They have the whine. The other two I don't know because only the rider hears it. I have never heard the whine of any of the other 4 RSV's while riding with them. Ok now EVERY Motorcycle has it's own noises, personalities, or whatever. I don't care if it is two Goldwings, two RSV, two Road Stars, two HD, or two whatever they will be different in some way. It may be noises, steering, ride or some other something that makes it different from all other bikes. I also had a V-Star with saft drive and it had no whine. I now have a 06 Road Star Midnight Silverado and the RSV and I have two friends who both own a Roadie and a RSV. All six motorcycles are different. All the Roadies look alike and all the RSV's look alike but they're all different. YES I would buy the RSV again. I have not had a Yamaha yet I would not be proud to own. HD makes a beautiful bike, Honda makes a beautiful bike, and all the manufacturers make beautiful bikes. They all have there quirks. There is no purfect motorcycle out there so don't expect to find one. If the dealer you are buying your RSV will not let you test drive it tell him no thanks. There are a lot of Yamaha dealers out there. I'm sure you can find one that will let you test ride the one you want to buy. You may have to go a little further. I had to go 400 miles to get mine. You will not find anyone on this site that will tell you they don't like there RSV even with the whine. But then again if you go to a Honda forum or a HD forum they will tell you yea Yamaha makes a nice motorcycle but I prefer a Honda or I prefer a HD. So the choice is yours and your alone. Good luck on what ever you do. Harry:thumbsup2: -
Any problems with luggage racks?
YamaDuck replied to Murphster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have the Yamaha rack on mine and I think the instructions said 10 lb limit. As you can see from above several people have put 3 times the recommended weight on theirs with out cracking the trunk. I have seen other aftermarket racks out there for the RSV that look nice from a distance but I have not seen one up close. The aftermarket rack I saw has a design that appears to me to obstruct the loading of flat objests as the center section behind the seat is higher and tapers towards the back of the rack. No problem I guess as long as whatever you put on the back is not ridged. The Yamaha rack does not have that problem but is more expensive. I have never heard of the trunk on the RSV cracking as I have the Goldwing. I have also seen different size bolt heads used on the Yamaha rack to attach it to the trunk. I have heard of people putting tape and velcro and other things on the boltheads to keep them from stracting their helmets. I purchased some bolts like the majority of allen bolts (sorry I don't know the proper name for these bolts) only a little longer and went to Lowe's or Home Depot and I got these little plastic caps. You put the bolt throught the plastic ring end of the cap, thighten down the bolt and then snap the cap closed enclosing the bolt head. Works great! Or the cheap way you can just put your helmet in the trunk upside down. Harry:cool10: -

Passing lamp install
YamaDuck replied to Colonel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I know a couple of guys that have factory installed passing lights (both are midnight editions) one is an 05 and one is an 06 RSV and they have theirs in the same place ( beside the 12v outlet). Now I have a 06 Road Star Midnight Silverado with factory installed passing lights and the passing light switch is on the left passing light housing. Switch broke and I had to replace it which is common on the Road Star passing lights. -
Passing lamp install
YamaDuck replied to Colonel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My switch is on the left side of the accessory plug which is on the left side of the fairing. It is a push type switch that has a black rubber cover over it to keep the weather out and keep the switch dry. It is about the same size as a pencil eraser.
