84xj1100 replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Scott, That sounds like one helluve an idea...........I'll set that up tomorrow. If I remember, perhaps I'll take some pics and post them for others to see. I can't begin to tell you how sick how felt when I looked down and it was gone.....I only had the bike for two weeks.- 15 replies

Wanted - RH saddlebag lid for 87 VR
84xj1100 replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gearhead, I'm certainly glad that I'm not alone.......I've only owned my 86 for less than a month now......Saturday was perfect so off I went on a 250 km trip down a pile of secondary hwys. I stop in town to gas up and no left lid. In panic mode I start to think about the last time I had it opened and it occured to me that I left the house without latching down (don't ask, I'm still trying to figure it out). I raced back home and began my journey from scratch.....got about half way through and gave up. I figured for sure it would've flown off in the first 150 kms. Extremely depressed I headed home. The next morning my better half woke me and said lets finish your trip and see if we find it......sure enough within 20 kms of the service station I filled up at and first noticed it missing, there it was on the shoulder of the road. More amazing was the fact that all it had was surface scratches, I managed to remove them with some elbow grease. What I am really having a hard time imaging is how long it stayed on.....a lot of bumps, turns, hills and rough roads.......wow. Can anyone tell me how common it is to lose a lid????- 15 replies

Marcarl, Thanks for sparing me the big one. I think a lot of my time was used up thinking what part would come out and what I would have to remove next. Do you and "the others" often shield the truth from us rookies?? BTW if you do pop in to Ottawa drop me a PM and perhaps we could do "Tims". swifty, Checked the thread....the screw shown on the left side (original) didn't have a head left on it at all. I may have been able to do something if it was a stripped phillips head. As it turns out I used a Roberton head (square), from my parts bin....best I could do on a Sun evening. I should post a pic of the finished product......important thing....leak=gone mbrood, Great tip, I'll try that once I recover a little more. I really didn't want to wait till rear tire replacement as someone mentioned earlier. Thanks to all:banana: I'm a happy camper once again

Some very good info in the article. I have two comments however. The very first thing you do at an accident scene, especially if you are first on scene is to STOP. Take a deep breath, look around.....make sure the scene is safe for you, take another breath and do it again (it may seem like an eternity especilly if people are screaming or crying). If you don't do this you may end up a victim yourself or making irrational decsions and endangering the safety of others. I have conducted driver training ("four-wheelers") for a number of years and asked what they would do if they came accross a biker down. Every time I asked the question the response was a categorical, check the rider, see if he's OK of course. To which I respond.....that's wrong. Check the bike.....hit the KILL SWITCH. Make the scene safe for all.

Thanks for the responses. However my bike and I are on somewhat more intimate terms now as I spend the entire day tearing her down, draining the cooling system, removing the entire thermost housing from where it enters the engine, the piping that houses the drain plug, rad, etc, etc. I drilled out the shank of the screw that holds the drain plug in place, retapped it, replaced the O-ring on the plug (would have been a ten min job if there was a screw that could have been removed ). I also took the time to flush and back flush the system, clean up the ball and spring that sits in the drain plug, clean the bugs out of the cooling fins and took a suggestion from the tips guy - I added some screening in front of the rad for bugs........good news is, no leaks and I shouldn't have to worry about the cooling system for the next five years. I used long life (5 year) coolant. I guess these old girls can be quite a pain until you show them who's boss......it makes riding her that much more enjoyable. PS - FYI - Do not attempt this type of job at -10 degress centigrade on a concrete garage floor, especially if you are over 40 yrs old.......your body will not be happy the next day:backinmyday:.

Just picked up my 86 last week and it would appear I have an issue already. I've put about 500km's on her since I picked her up and every now and then I get a wiff of antifreeze. This morning I spotted two 2" dia wet spots under the engine. Antifreeze. It's coming from the drain valve. I dried everything off and found a couple of interesting things. First according to the manuals there is a screw that holds the plug in place = not on mine. It appears as if the head has snapped off the screw. How does one get the plug out to inspect it? Second, if I turn the plug it simply goes all around as opposed to stopping in either the open or closed position. Is this normal...does this plug simply turn 360 degrees?? The manual says to align it with a mark either open or closed for purposes of draining the rad.....I can't seem to find a mark on the housing only a hole top dead centre...is that it? For the time being I have the plug turned so that it appears closed (same as the picture in the manual) and the leak has apparently stopped. Questions I suppose I'll have to drain everything and drill out the screw in order to remove the plug and probably replace the gasket which I suspect is the cause for the leak....am I on the right track here?? Any suggestions?? How big of a PITA is this going to be. Another totally unrelated question for anyone who responds....how do you remove the fuel filter?? There is some sort of bracket or something holding it in place. How do you get in there? Any help here would be good. Thanks Ed

As an instructor for the safety crse, one of the things I used to pass on to students was a little piece of advice I got from a shop owner. Bungee or stretch chords work wonders but spend just a little extra and get the bungee net, the stretch "load" is spread out.....so if one hook lets loose it won't go far and the other hooks will take up the slack. Of crse it's time for a new one after that. Ed

Holy crap......that's beautiful.......wow.....I'd say it just by looking at it that it's only 65K and a very loving, gentle, well cared for 65K at that......Whoever buys that I'm sure won't be disappointed at all:cool10::cool10::sun:

Excuse me for chiming in to ask what is probably a dumb question. Where's the sensor on this battery....the one that I am presuming (based on my xj) plugs into the bikes computer sensors??? I am "ass u me" ing that if their isn't one that the Venture only uses the voltmeter to indicate charging voltage rather than battery fluid level. Don't be too rough with the answer, I like to learn something every day and this would be it so I can relax for a while.

Interesting article.....quite sad....a real reflection on todays values.....Here's a little something else to consider (don't quote me on the figures)....a landed immigrant, say a muderer, who may face persecution in their own country, is put up in a 5 star hotel until accomodations can be found for them at public expense. They will then receive about $2000 a month tax free. Someone who was born and raised here, has worked all their lives, paid their taxes is only entiltled to about $1500 a month when they retire....go figure....

It's guys like him that make your country great. Trust me we have our fair share too. Me thinks he's never had it and he knows bikers get it....

BP&J, Forgot to mention that you were quite right, I have the other Yamaha classic as well...the XJ1100 Maxim. I bought it new in 85 and turned the clock about 5 yrs ago, shortly after the TDI/TCI (black box) went TU. Found the 82 (then found a TCI about a month later) been ridin the 82 ever since and want to redo the 84. You'd be surprised at how many similarities there are between the Maxim 1100 and the Ventures. Intregal braking, computer monitoring including issues like the side stand switch, they even use the same oil filter. On another note...maxie brown and gold????please:Im not listening to..of crse grey rules but blue is a close second........ Puc, Thanks for all your info.....I actually did some real hard comparing of the 1st and 2nd editions....I opted for the 86-93 version because of the larger more refined engine, revamped tranny and the increased luggage capacity. Scott, Thanks for the offer to assist.....perhaps we could do coffee at some point if our paths cross....BTW.........What is with the fuel valve on these things??????? I was a Chief Instructor for the MC crse in Winnipeg for the last 12 years and we have always told folks to ride with fuel in the "on" position...when she studders reach down with your left (theoretically available hand) and switch to "res". How is that even possible on this bike?? If you leave it in "res" and she sputters???? Yes I keep track of my fuel with the odometer but there's always that little sigh of relief when you have that little extra in "res"

Thanks so much folks, your responses have been overwhelming. I suppose I should have posted this on the 1st Gen forum...I don't suppose those wannabe 1st Gens / the 2nd runner ups, ever read it do they?? Especially without pictures. That way I'd have only gotten the responses that matter. Blame Eck - he started it. (let the jousting begin) BTW it is two tone grey, I should have pics in the next month or so Ed

Eck....It looks like we'll be jousting in the future.....1st Gen's rule Friesman1.....you're scaring me.....I know through the research I've done (mostly this site) that 83-85 had the second gear issue but all the work you'll be doing with only 42K....wow Yopper....thank you....that makes me feel a whole lot better. mm482.....you too are making me feel a whole lot better

Welcome to my first thread since joining the site. I'm sure the question has been asked before but I can't seem to find it.......how much mileage do 1st Gen's have on their bikes. I just purchased my first Venture (an 86) which I loving refer to as my "couch". It has 72,500 Km's (approx 45,000 miles) on it and I'm curious as to how long I could expect her to remain on the road, if I look after her. I will be picking her up next week. Thoughts, tips, hints or suggestions also welcome???? Thanks to all who choose to respond.

Oil Filter Question
84xj1100 replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Schlepporello, Sarges46 is quite right.....the Fram CH6002 is what yer lookin for.....$11 bucks though - that must be with taxes incl (I get mine for 9...at Cdn Tire, neither here nore there though). Included is two o-rings....one for the filter ?housing?, part the filter sits in...and one for the bolt that holds it on. Recommendations/food for thought: 1. Use them both = replace both O-rings...you paid for them 2. The large O-ring can be a pain to get it to seat in the housing especially if you take it directly out of the box and attempt to use it. What I do prior to an oil/filter change, is take the pkg with the o-rings in it and remove it from the box, spread it out for a while. That way it's not kinked from being shoved in the box and hard to work with. Good Luck Ed -
Kickstand Safty switch
84xj1100 replied to rayzar52's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Razer, How'd you ever make out with your switch??? FYI My Maxim 1100 has the same switch. Being a bit of a "how does it work" kidda guy, I rebuilt the switch. During the rebuild it's easy to see how problems can occur....mostly moisture gets into the spring loaded plunger and rusts it away, rendering the switch useless. The rebuild wasn't hard and if you're interested I could walk you through it. Ed :Venture:82&84 Maxim 1100 86 Venture- 5 replies

Par for the course......A few years ago in Winnipeg one of our own (sporting a football bike (crotch rocket)) decided to continue his practice of drinking and riding (11th or 12th conviction) - lead police on a high speed chase at speeds of 200kph and greater - hit an elderly women broadside - killed her - walked away and recieved a conditional sentence of 2 yrs less a day. Less than a month later he had another crotch rocket and was picked up for impaired again. This truely is a legal vice judicial society we live in.

1st Gen Floorboards For Sale
84xj1100 replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gary, Still got the floorboards??? I'm quite interested...I've been an 1100 Maxim rider for the last 20+ yrs and finally bought a couch (86 Venture). She's a basic Venture so I'm lookin to add a few things. I've always wanted a machine with heel/toe shift & floorboards. What I am lacking though is Venture knowledge. Will your floorboards fit an 86??? Of course it's a mute point if you've sold them already. Ed- 20 replies

which one to keep?
84xj1100 replied to Kurt827's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you kidding me.......I could only dream of having a Venture that looked as good as yours do.....I just bought an 86 Venture (not royal...no accessories....none of the fun stuff). Others are right - you can't have too many especially if they look like yours.
