  1. I am looking for a touring bag for my RSTD. It's hard to tell very much from the small pictures in ads and I haven't had any experience with them. From what I see, some of them mount over the backrest and sit on the passenger seat while others seem to strap to the back side of the backrest. I think I would prefer one that will strap securely to the back or fit either way. It doesn't have to be leather, cordura fabric would be OK but I am not interested in spending $400 on one. Would also prefer one with some type of inner frame to keep it's shape. I have seen a couple of the Saddleman bags that I might like, but I would like some feedback from folks who have had different ones and what you think about them. I have run a seach on the forum, but some of the older links no longer work. I may be asking too much, but hey, if you don't ask ........ Thanks, Jeff
  2. This is how I did mine. One had a converter in it, but they both worked exactly the same. I used a hole saw slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the REAR of the muffler. It takes a while to saw through the cone because of the angle of the metal, but it will cut through it. The entire guts of the mufflers simply fall out when you turn the rear end downward. Leave the insulation and the net wire that holds the insulation against the outside wall of the muffler in place. I then took the assembly that came out and cut the outlet pipe off about 1 1/2" - 2" from the cone. Now while holding the cone back in place just as it came off, tack weld it in place and then weld all around it. Finish the job with high temp black paint inside the cones. You obviously need a welder or a friend who has one, but this in one heck of a lit easier than trying to drill holes, cut and twist metal out of the front inlet pipe. I will never try to work from the inlet end of a muffler again. My pipes are the straight cut ones, but you can do the same on the slash cuts. Jeff
  3. I can give you instructions on a full mod if you're interested. I don't like really loud pipes and these aren't too loud for me. They sound like glass pacs on a '57 Chevy. Jeff
  4. If the owner can't add any better than he can spell, that could be a problem to keeping a business profitable.
  5. Sometime in June I am planning 7 or 8 days in Eastern Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. Can anyone give me some advice on "must see's" and your idea's of the best rides. I plan to ride some of the Blue Ride Parkway, but I don't really care to stay on it too much. Is there a section that is a favorite ride. Thank's for your input. Jeff
  6. Are you talking about help removing the wheel from the bike or removing the tire from the wheel and replacing the car tire on the wheel?
  7. I finally got the pics on here large enought to see good. Now, if I can just remember how I did it the next time I want to post one. Jeff
  8. Thanks for the offer, but it's the wrong one for my camera. Maybe someone else on here can use it. Jeff
  9. You're right peg, I don't know why they are smaller. I'm not real good at uploading these photos yet. I'll try again later this pm when I have some time. Jeff
  10. Tim, I run 42 psi in my Federal. I have dropped it down to 35 or so and felt the "roll" you are talking about and went back to 42. I really think that some of the "feel" of the c/t is in our heads because so many have said it won't work that we are paranoid when we first put them on. I remember the first ride after I put the Federal on. Every little sensation started me to wondering if it was the c/t or was it there before and I just couldn't remember. I wiggled the handlebars a little and thought "Oh my God, this thing is not very stable." So I got on a freind's Harley and then a Honda and guess what? They both reacted the same. I was looking for something wrong. Today, I never give it a second thought. I know everybody's experience is different and everyone has the freedom of choice. If other folks don't mind me running a car tire, then I don't mind them running a motorcycle tire. Is this a great country, or what? Ride safe and enjoy. Jeff
  11. Let me check my battery # this afternoon. If it's the right one, I'll buy it from you. Jeff
  12. This is the Federal car tire that I am running on my 2006 RSTD. There have been many questions by members who are running other tires and some who are considering changing to a car tire. As you can see, there is plenty of room for the tire and after 6,000 miles it still has over 3/16" of tread left. I don't remember exactly what the original tread depth was, but I believe that I will get 20,000 miles out of it. (That is if my back heals before the tire dry rots.) It is 1 ply polyester on the sidewalls and 2 ply steel belted under the tread. I don't know why different tires with the same ply exibit a different amount of stiffness in the sidewalls, but this tire was stiffer than the Kuhmo I saw in side by side test. I chose this tire over the Kuhmo because of the stiffer sidewall and overall height and over the B F Goodrich because the white lettering on one side did not appeal to me personally. There are members who run both of the other tires and like them, so I am sure they are equally good tires. I hope this helps some of you who are considering a car tire. Jeff
  13. Big Boy, your best bet is Lake Hill Motors in Corinth. I was just looking at their web site and comparing their prices to Seattle Motor. Lake Hill has them beat $2,500 to $3000 on Ventures and RSTD. I've bought 2 bikes from Lake Hill in the last 3 years and they have killed the dealers in Columbus, MS, Hamilton, AL and Jasper, AL every time. The only one even close to them was Brookhaven, MS. I don't know if they can be beaten anywhere. Jeff
  14. Yes, I have a set of front light heads (ends, recepticles, lollipops or whatever you want to call them) on the back of my 2006 RSTD. The front heads are the same for the V Star 650, 1100 and Royal Star and they will fit the rear mounts on our RSTD's without any adjustments. I have them wired to be on all the time as tail lights and they also work as signal lights. You can wire them in behind the tag to be either tail/signal lights or brake/signal lights, whichever combo you choose. They will not work as a combo of all three - tail/brake/signal lights. They have 1157 red bulbs inside the clear lens. The only reason for the clear lens is my personal preference over a red one. Yes, they will be the same for your 2005. More lighting is definately better. That is why I choose to wire them as tail lights. Obviously our tail lights are on more than our brake lights. Then, I saw how little my single brake light showed up during the day and I decided I needed more brake lights. An earlier post mentioned that the new addition of 50 watts will blind people. Again, I ride mostly during the day and they shouldn't bother people that much during daylight. I want them as bright as I can get away with so that I can be seen or I wouldn't have put them on in the first place. You can get a 20 or 30 watt halogen in red to fit the Platinum burners if you choose. Remember, you can also loosen the one bracket bolt and angle them straight down if you want to. Jeff
  15. Man, I hate time change. I'm really not in favor of many changes at all, except...........new bikes.
  16. I'll check them out by having a friend ride my bike while I follow him. I think I will be able to adjust them downward to cut the glare if it is too much. I don't want to blind anyone behind me, but I would rather have a discussion with a policeman than not be seen. I don't think any around here would give me a ticket without asking me to tone them down some first. A lot of police and patrolmen around here ride also. Jeff
  17. I scraped my engine guards once................when I dropped the bike.
  18. Thanks guys. I'm plugging it. Jeff
  19. Thanks for the input. That's what I was really hoping to hear. Jeff
  20. My rear tire (yes, it is a car tire) on my RSTD has had a slow leak in it few several weeks now. This morning I found what looks like a small nail or brad it the center of the tread. I don't know how I missed it. I even had a buddy look for nails while I slowly backed the bike. The question is: have you ever run a tire (c/t or m/t) on a motorcycle with a plug in it? If I am going to the trouble to pull it off to patch it on the inside, then I will probably go ahead an put a new tire on. But I am seriously considering plugging it. I know the thinking that on a car, you still have three more tires should it fail, but I have never had a plug to blow out of a tire before. Leak air yes, but not blow out. Give me some feedback, please. Jeff
  21. Brian, I can certainly understand your reasons and I don't blame you for trying to achieve your goals. That's what life is about. I had not given the odometer any thought. That's why I asked the question. It's always good to get another point of view. Thanks for the insight. Ride safe. Jeff
  22. To each, his own. But from what I read here, a speedohealer doesn't solve the problem so why waste the money? If I know that when I'm showing 70 on the speedometer, that I'm really doing 65, then HELLO, I am going to pull that information out of my brain and leave my money in my wallet. Am I missing something, or is that just not high tech enough? Somebody clue me in, please. Jeff
  23. Don, the Federal still has a more rigid sidewall than the Kumho. I don't know why that would be, if they are both one ply, but I checked them side by side when I was buying and that's why I chose it over the Kumho. I have developed a slow leak somewhere with my Federal, but have not been able to find it yet. After seeing what happened to Lowell, I will be looking a lot harder for it before I ride again. It will be several days yet because I just had back surgery last week and I'm not able to do much yet. As soon as I find where the leak is (nail, bead, valve stem or wherever), I will let everyone know. I like the c/t, but we are doing something different and we need to keep everyone aware of any potential problems. I may start a thread or some type of post where anyone who has had any problem can list it for others to check. No lengthy post allowed, just a fact or two so that it doesn't get lost in all the clutter and chatter. What do you think? I would like suggestions and input from everyone who is interested. Jeff
  24. Since many of us are running car tires now and there seems to be more interest almost daily, I think a poll may be in order to determine the most popular make of tire. I think this would be benificial to all of us for safety reasons and to help determine longevity of wear. Jeff
