  1. Probably more to do with Smog requirements than detuning them in the later years.....
  2. I bet his MPG went up..... :rotf:
  3. If it runs when you want it to, stops when it's supposed to, that's good enough for me. My favorite is any VR somewhere between an '83 and '93. .....
  4. John. I don't think knowing the original price on a bike is going to be that much of a help. Knowing aproximately what a scoot sells for on the used market might?? I usually take the approach that no matter what the cosmetic condition of a bike is, it has issues. A lot of factors enter in to what a used bike will sell for, but the biggest leverage you'll have is if the owner is really motivated to sell. I've picked up five 1stGens for way under what they would have brought on the market, and way under what the owner was asking. How? Because I'm not affraid to make a rediculous offer.... you never know unless you ask. Condition... I really like to see a dusty bike...., mechanicals, how long it's been sitting, and best of all... how long it's been on the market are the best reasons to buy low.. The time of year hasn't been a big price influence, as most of the bikes I've owned were purchased right in the middle of riding season. Hope this helps, and good luck.
  5. The 'O' ring in the housing is the culprit. Fairly easy to replace, and there are write up on the board about it. My 83 only 'dribbles' when it gets down into the 30"s. Otherwise it's fine. I suppose I'll have to R&R mine when if it gets any worse, but for now I'll let it do it's thing since it doesn't get down in the 30 degs area very often....

    Sac Weather

Rod, the weather during Feb is hit and miss wet. Rocklin hasn't seen ice or snow in.... forever... Roads are good and well maintained. If the weather cooperates that time of the year there are some good lower elevation roads for weekend getaways. You don't want to go to far up the hills as we have lots of snow in the Sierras above 4,000'. Gimme a call when you get here and I buy you a cup of coffee.... or lunch if you twist my arm....
  7. I actually have another trunk that I picked up pretty cheap off ebay for the inside L brackets and parts. It's just that the top is toast, but the bottom is in great shape and I'd hate to cut up a good bottom for a couple of holes. I just tossed a bunch of plastic off the '93 that would have worked for scrap ABS....but hind sight is....?? I'm just wondering if piecing scrap ABS in the holes would give as much support as glass matt and ABS filler???
  8. Thanks Dave. Looks like HD is going to get more of my money than I'd planned....
  9. Don't know Widder, but just visited their website. Looks like the same type of store as National Discount Cycle we had locally that went out of biz. The second independent to file for bankruptcy in our area in the last year. A sign of the times.....
  10. I've already done the cracks with Weld-On 3245. It's probably acetone?? They look like 'H' in the pics, but are actually pretty sturdy. I'm sure they wouldn't hold up for any length of time under the structial stress of the area they are in. That's why I need to get some glass mat backing on the inside. In my mind, and with the help of some good suggestions on this board, I think I'll go ahead and use ABS thick cement to coat the inside area and then press in a layer...maybe two.. of matting. I'll follow up with a couple of thin layers of PC-7 or Plastex on the inside. Because of several metal plates and brackets that are in the area there's a need to keep the build down for them to still fit. More glass less 2part. Finally fill and form the hole from the outside. I'm feeling better about jumping into this repair due to some good feedback. Thank guys....
  11. Thanks Rocket....
  12. Thanks for the lead Russ. I may consider using it. Plastex sounds good too, but I didn't see where it was sandable. I'm going to need to fair the stuff after it dries. Attached are a couple of pics of the damage.
  13. Gotta question. Does the plastex cure hard and is it sandable?? Thanks for the link.
  14. Thanks Craig. Gotcha down as paid.
  15. LOL....nah it's just getting broken in... Gotcha entered John. You can do the paypal dance any time. If you'd like I can send invoice. -Jack
  16. Got it Terry. You should have the invoice shortly. -Jack
  17. Is this the plastic stuff everyone's using?? http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=132& I have two or three different types of fillers around here that I use when fiberglassing. I wondered if there would be any problem using it with Acrylic 'goo'.... If Mike's used it, I'm sure it'll be OK.
  18. Thanks Barry. Gotcha down and did receive the payment notice from Paypal.
  19. Pics would be great Dave. And ..... if you happen to have the name of the ABS glue I'd appreciate it. I stopped by Tap Plastics to see if they had any thing in a two part ABS that would cure, but the only thing they had was a thicker ABS glue made by Weld-On. Basically the same stuff I already use for repairing spider cracks... only thick. I wasn't sure if it would have any fill properties so I passed and thought I'd check with a few of the auto parts stores in the area to see if they might have a two part??
  20. I didn't mean to get you upset, but I've never....ever...had any the problems your describing. Geico has always treated me politely, fairly, and with courtesy when I've had need contacted them by phone. I guess if you have an axe to grind, you would be upset by someone getting their insurance online, but you can also get insurance thru Progressive online and save. It's happening with a lot of carriers, and with the internet getting stronger....daily... I'm sure others will join in. It's unfortunate for insurance agents, but it's not something that hasn't happened to others in their businesses lately. The internet is changing the way the world is doing business. I have a sense you're making light of the fact, that in my case Geico, was the lesser quote, and toss out an example to support your cause. My original quote from Progressive was $190, and with Geico it was $127, for one year, for the same identical coverage. Geico renewals went down the second and third year to $115 and $96 respectively. BTW I had my proof of insurance card and policy printed up and the card in my wallet in two hours. I've found that insurance is never one sided, and depending on circumstances and the moon phase premiums can go either way. I'm glad you were able to save your buddy some serious money. Keep up the good work.... I think I'll stick with Geico online.
  21. Thanks for the link Dave. There's some good information in there. I didn't see a lot of pics on the actual damage to the trunk. Was any plastic missing that you had to fill??
  22. I got a quote from Progressive when I bought the first '83, and it was a heck of a lot better than what was quoted by my main insurance co. State Farm. 'Course anything would be better after being shell shocked by SF. Anyway just for the heck of it I also got a quote from Geico. They beat Progressive by $60 bucks, so I went with them. I was in much the same situation as you. Over 60, riding for 40+ years. Right now I have 2 1stGens insured with them at $400 per year for both bikes. That's 100/300 uninsured full coverage. The works. BTW make sure the policy you get has uninsured as well as underinsured coverage. After what a couple of our members went thru after their accidents I made sure I had the under coverage.
  23. Is that the show were you can, for a large fee, fireoff a clip thru a full auto out in the dessert somewhere??? Have a great time....
  24. There's been a ton of posts written about plastic repair on fairings, but can anyone who's successfully patched a large sized hole in their plastic fairing gimme a hint on what you used and how it turned out. I have two fairly good sized holes in the bottom of the trunk of the '91 that need to be filled and faired. Since they are right in front the area supported by the 4 thru-screws, and right on the leading edge of the trunk, I thought I'd try to lay down a reinforcing fiberglass matt over the entire area either on the inside or underneath. Any advise on what you used to fill the void of the missing pieces of ABS. I work with fiberglass all the time, but with ABS, and spider cracks, I'm a little aprehensive.... I didn't spot the damage until after I bought the bike, and this is the first time I've haven't been able to put 2 and 2 together to figure out how the damage happened. The bottom of the trunk was fractured , and the mounting ears on the frame plus the ears on the mounting rack were broken off. It took one hell of a hit. But.... there is absolutely no other damage to to the trunk, saddle bags, chrome rails and lighting, or surrounding area. The trunk is 100% other than the bottom damage. Nothings bent or broken. It's got me scratching my head.... A 400lb gorilla maybe???
  25. Thanks for the paypal Charles. The OEM wire terminals should work just fine with the Odyssey. I'm not totally sure on size, but it should be a smaller footprint that the OEM. Perhaps Freebird or another member who's already installed one could chime in with some guidence?? I only do 1stGens.....
