  1. Hi Don, I made my own too. Just used some scrap pieces I had around the shop. I've got a double wide one on the back of my '46 Chev truck and a single one in the bike trailer. I saw one at a local bike shop that looked home made and they were asking $200 for them. I knew I could do better than that.
  2. Brad, Stay away from the magnetic ones. Leslie lost hers without even noticing they were gone until too late. I use the clip on ones and they work very well. I also get the transition lenses but they need direct sun light to work so the clip on sun glasses work better when driving the motor-home or car and even the bike with a visor on the helmet.
  3. Carl, Congratulations to you and your family. Although Marca looks way too young to be a grandma, you on the other hand seem to qualify quite nicely.
  4. Hey George, I think it was a year ago today that we met you guys for the Savanna GA meet and eat. That was a great time too. We really enjoyed visiting with you folks and touring the city.
  5. Thanks to all for the kind words. My friends here at VR.org have truly made this journey a little easier.
  6. Well I finally got up the courage to watch the video of Leslie's funeral. I think that's the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. I know it seems like a weird thing to do, to video a funeral, but since I wasn't able to attend in person I needed to be able to see it for myself. The next day I went to the cemetery to visit the grave site. I think watching the video made going to the cemetery a little easier but not much. Today I went and looked at my bike for the first time since the accident. I don't know how I managed to survive this. The front wheel is pushed back into the radiator. The gas tank is almost flat on top. The G2 bars are bent. The windshield is gone. The headlight, passing lights and turn signals are gone. The fairing is toast. What a mess.
  7. Jay, I have a 6X12 enclosed for my RSV and it's perfect for one bike or maybe one touring and one cruiser but it would be tight for two large bikes and hard to get around to hook up the tie downs etc. I think for two bikes a seven foot wide model would be better. As far as sleeping in it. They do get hot inside not having any insulation but lots of guys do use them for camping. With roll up screening an inflatable bed and a large beer cooler you'll be all set.
  8. Here's a link to the post I made on installing the HD fishtail tips. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11648&highlight=Fishtail+tips
  9. Jerry, FYI, it's an easy mod to install the Harley fishtail tips on the Bubs. I did a how to and posted on here somewhere. Let me know if you're interested and I'll see if I can find it. Gary
  10. Gerbings heated jacket. Best accessory I ever bought.
  11. Hi Alex, I have a similar but older model that's only 35000 BTU in my 2 car garage and it does a great job. I think the unit you're looking at can be vented out the wall instead of up through the roof like mine. Plus this one is more compact and can be mounted higher off the floor. Does it have a standing pilot light or electronic ignition? Gary
  12. OH yes! Leslie made those too, every Christmas. She put them on a big cookie sheet in the shape of a Christmas tree to bake. She decorated them with green and red cherries. It's no wonder I weighed 260 lbs.
  13. Hey Tom, I'll have to take you up on that offer. So you never had meat pie EH? It's feel good comfort food. Especially on a cold winter night. Here's a recipe that sounds close to what we used. Except we used 10 lbs of ground pork, 10 lbs of ground beef and I can't remember how many lbs of potatoes. We had to use every large pot we owned and my job was to keep stirring until cooked so the ingredients wouldn't stick to the bottom of the pot. This usually took about 3 hours. http://new-brunswick.net/new-brunswick/recipes/recipe64.html
  14. I'm home alone tonight so I looked in the freezer to see what was in there and I swear we could eat for a year without shopping. I found a few meat pies (Tourtière) that Leslie and I made so I put one in the oven. Boy did that hit the spot and bring back lots of memories too. When my mom died in 1995 Leslie took on the job of baking the meat pies every Christmas. Last year (2006) we made 30. A lot are given to family and friends but I still have a couple left. When they're gone they're gone but I will enjoy every bite and think of the time spent with Leslie stirring the pot while she made the pie shells. I need to look a little more and see if there's any fruit cake left in there...LOL. We made that every Christmas too. I have never had any as good as her's.
  15. Just a quick note to let everyone know that I finally got released from the hospital today. I still have to go for therapy but at least I get to sleep at home every night now. Thanks again for all the prayers and good thoughts. Also for all the cards, phone calls and hospital visits. You folks are the best. Gary
  16. Thanks Tom, It's good to be back, even if only on the weekends right now. I sure hate having to go back to the hospital on Sunday night. The better I'm feeling the longer the days get in there. They're getting me up to 3 hours of therapy a day and I have to say, it sure is tiring. It's amazing how weak you get from laying in a hospital bed for too long. I've lost a total of 80 lbs. in the last year (back to what I weighed in high school) so I'm glad I don't have to move all of that around during my work outs. When they put 5 lb. weights around my ankles it feels like 50. I was amazed at how heavy the pot of coffee was when I made some this morning. I don't recall having any trouble carrying it before. When I went down in the basement this morning to check things out I had no problem going down but coming back up, well lets just say it wasn't pretty. Getting stronger every day. I just can't wait to get back to where I was before. Gary
  17. Hey Everyone, Jeff here again. A few people mentioned sending cards. You can send them to our home since we don't know how much longer he'll be in Akron. The address is 247 Rd 11, RR#2 Woodslee, ON., N0R1V0. Thanks for all the support. ~Jeff
  18. Hey guys. This is Jeff, Gary's son, again. He's still in intensive care in the hospital. He's breathing on his own, talking, and started to eat today. He wanted me to put a message from him up here. "Life has changed during the last two weeks in ways that I thought it never would. I don't know if I'll ever ride again and I don't care. If I walk again I'll be happy. Thank you for all your heartfelt messages. Hopefully I'll do this myself in a few weeks, sitting in front of the fireplace at Christmas time if I can find someone to haul the wood. I'm not up for visitors. We'll let you know ASAP." Thanks again for all of your support. ~Jeff Nantais
  19. Hi everybody. This is Gary's son Jeff again. I wanted to let you know that we have created a blog to post messages to our family. Thanks again for all of your thoughts. The website for the blog is http://memoryofleslie.blogspot.com/. ~Jeff
  20. Thanks to everybody for their thoughts and prayers. This is Gary's son Jeff. I read about this thread in an article with the Windsor Star and thought I should check it out. I just wanted to thank everybody and give you an update. My dad is in intensive care. He's banged up pretty bad but everything important is still working. He's on a lot of drugs and sleeps most of the time. We haven't been able to have a conversation yet, and he won't be able to remember anything at this point anyway. As far as the accident itself goes, the girl did not actually run the stop sign. She stopped, saw the bike, but thought she saw the right turn signal on, as well as the modulating headlight. She turned left and my dad didn't have enough time to stop. She wasn't on a phone or drunk or anything like that. She just made a very terrible decision to make the turn. He is getting better and my family appreciates all of the support. ~Jeff Nantais
  21. Hi Tom, We are just out for a week or two this time. We won't be flying south for the winter until after Christmas. Tell Debby we're thinking of her.
  22. Well, we launched the shuttle again this morning and are currently camped in Berlin OH. I guess we'll explore Amish country for a couple of days before heading further south. We're hoping to get to the Roanoke Valley and see some fall colours and do some riding in the mountains.
  23. Is there a lawyer in the house? Maybe Reinyrooster knows, he's a prosecutor.
  24. I found it. Here's the pdf file. Scroll to pg. 47. S7.9.4 http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/mvstm_tsd/tsd/1080rev4_e.pdf
  25. I had the Genmar risers on my '03 for a short time and was able to get a little slack in the cables by snipping one or two zip ties behind the fairing. You may be able to gain a bit more slack by re-routing the cables too. Had to go with 2" over cables when I went to the Flanders G2 bars and I think that would have been the best fix for the risers as well. You have to split the throttle box on the handle bars to disconnect the top side of the cables and to get at the other end the tank has to come off and the junction box for the cruise control cable has to come apart. BEWARE, there's one of those "OH SH**T" springs in that box. If you can take it apart without the spring jumping out make sure you take a digital picture of it so you can remember how it goes together. If you just want to re-route the cables just take the top apart. It's easier then the bottom.
