That "extra device" looks like it might be a capacitor, If it is a capacitor (which could be used as a filter) It is hooked up in a way that it is doing nothing at all. As far as the blue and white/red wire...

Engine Upgrade
Flyinfool replied to Officer Dave's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Yes the upgrade can be done but is very expensive. First question; Is this bike new to you? Are you getting the power out of it that is already there? What speeds are you shifting at? It is very common for new owners of these bikes to complain about lack of power, usually it is because they are trying to ride it like a Harley. If you are not hitting the rev limiter, your not making power. -
As much as I would like to see the Packers take it all. Falcons are using the strategy that worked for Denver the last time the packers were in the SB. Falcons - Pats in the SB, Pats take it all.

FWIW In applications that require the most extreme reliability for the military, things like control or flight functions on aircraft, the military does not allow solder, except in very special cases. A properly crimped connection is far more reliable than even a proper solder joint (few of us know how to solder properly) in a vibration environment. I have been crimping connections on my vehicles for 35 years and never had a joint fail. I have repaired many solder joints on other peoples vehicles. I have used those blue connectors in a pinch, I fill it with dielectric grease before inserting the wires, make sure it is the right size for the wires being connected, Then thoroughly wrap it in a good quality electrical tape.

Help-valve shim tool
Flyinfool replied to dug050's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
So the next question is. Do you ever need to rotate the cam/tool more than 90° to get room to remove the shim? -
Aint it amazing how the 2nd gen owners still have hallucinations? Must be cuz they are not going fast enough to keep their minds occupied with driving.:stickpoke: As long as we are requesting new smiles, how about... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v387/jonathanwong/thumb_thisthreadisworthlesswithoutp.gif This will save me from having to keep inserting this... http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/attachments/costa-rica-panama/121054d1231181462-coral-star-dec-26th-jan-1-thread_is_worthless.jpg

Help-valve shim tool
Flyinfool replied to dug050's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I thought that the leg was just to prevent over rotation and having the springs slam back if/when you went off the back of the tool. If either case is true, then the shortened base leg should not be a problem. -
I thought the test was a blast. I love electronic do dads. I made the poor doc explain the technical aspects of everything he was doing, they must hate engineers.

Help-valve shim tool

I was going to use a different approach to making these. Since I do not have a CNC mill, only manual. I will start with a 12" bar and machine the profile into the full length of the bar, so it looks like an extrusion. I was then going to cut it up into the proper thickness and put each of those on a rotary table to cut in the step. Having never actually been involved in a valve checking job YET I am taking in everyone's input into making a better tool. I am not looking to go into business making these, but I will make however many I get out of this one chunk of metal. -
A car battery can show 12+ volts and still be bad. Check the voltage while cranking the engine, that is the voltage that counts, as long as it stays above 9V while cranking the engine then it is fine. When you go to your mechanic or AutoZone type place to have them test it they are using a machine to put a load similar to cranking, to see it the battery will hold voltage under load. FWIW I have tried real expensive top of the line batteries and the cheapest batteries that I could get my hands on, in my '96 GMC P/U, they all last me 4 years and give up the ghost on the first sub zero Monday morning after having not been run for a day or two.

There is not a passive system that can possibly work. There was an article in one of the older car magazines where the did some testing of "Radar Jammers" some of them actually increased the distance at which the police radar could get a sped lock. It would take an active system that actually transmits a signal, and that is very illegal, any company that tried to make such a device would be shut down real quick. Now Laser, that is a different story. There is no law (that I am aware of) that says that you can not have some blinking IR LEDs on the front of your vehicle.

I have to agree that while it is not my style, the workmanship is fantastic.

You calendar link did not work for me. I would really love to make it there this year, but a lot of things have to go rite between now and then for me to make it. If I do make it, I will be camping on site for sure, and well armed against any unwanted pond monsters.

Well if there are a lot of flakes then it must be here, I don't know how many flakes there are over there, but I do know there are a lot of flakes here. Therefore I must now be here and not there.

Help-valve shim tool
Flyinfool replied to dug050's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
It is good to know about needing some extra meat on the tool, It is easy to add it at this point. At this point it is the challenge of making it. Playing with my mill in the basement on these cold snowy days is still fun. Besides, Right now I have a lot more time than money. -

I have a chunk of material on order and was going to make it all up into tools. It should make about 20 tools. I have no idea how much it is going to cost me to machine these, I will have to purchase some tooling as I go. My drawing is even more simplified for machining. I sure wish now that I had gotten around to converting my mill to CNC, that would make this easy to make. -
The theory of the red light cameras does not bother me as much as the implementation. There are some installations where they shorten the yellow light so that you either lock up for a full panic stop and risk getting rearended or you end up running the red. These type are not set up for safety but as a cash cow, and dramatically increase the number of crashes at those intersections.

You southerners are having all of the fun this year. Here in WI, I am getting worried that I might have to break the lawn mower out of storage. From Sept till may I refuse to have to cut the grass. Who is the wise guy that moved down south and packed up winter and took it with him??????
