After installing my new GPS unit earlier. I am noticing that my speedometer is out a bit from my actual speed as calculated by my GPS. I have heard that the GPS units are incredibly accurate. My '06 RSTD seems to be out on the high side. When my speedometer reads 120, my actual speed from GPS is 112. This can't be designed on purpose, so in that case, is there a fix?

I am looking for a hand air-pump for the suspension on my '06 RSTD. I found one that had a pressure gauge attached, but it was a 150 PSI gauge, and the range that I would need, was so small I could not get an accurate reading. Can anyone suggest a good air pump for our bikes, and a company that has a decent price on them? What PSI range should I look for ? I figured 50 PSI max reading would be fine, since the front is so low, and the rear is 40 max I believe. And in another thread someone mentioned a pump with a 'Zero loss' chuck. I have had no luck sourcing that out on the net. Any help most appreciated. Also, what kind of pressure should I be running in my rear and front shocks? Here are the stats, I am 250 lbs, mostly ride by myself, but on occasion I have a 125 lb passenger. Any suggestions? Sonny

I have been riding with an HJC Sy-Max helmet for 3 years, and I love it. All the protection of a full face, with the ability to "flip" the front for extra ventilation at lights, or long stops. I think it will be my helmet of choice for years to come.

If I may suggest, ripping at anything over 128 kb, is a waste of space. CD quality is approx 44,100 khz, ripping at higher than that, serves no purpose. Think of it this way, if you take a cassette tape, and record it on a CD, does it become CD quality? No, it is just a CD copy of a cassette original, preserving a cassette quality sound, on a CD, using much more space. With the limitations of analog speakers, my personal opinion is, recording at 96 kb, is more than sufficient. The signal loss will be negligible, but the reclaimed space will be very noticable. What I may suggest, if you are finding quality issues with your CD's is to run them through one of many sound processors to remove clicks and pops, hiss etc. On average, most MP3's of excellent quality, are "approx" 1 meg per minute, with an 8 gig drive, you should be able to fit around 8000 min, or 2000 average songs. That is alot of music. To put it in perspective, if you had 2000 songs on your MP3 player, and hit play, you could listen to it for 5.5 days STRAIGHT, and never hear the same song twice! :dancefool:

These seem to be a good choice. http://www.tlcproducts.com/servlet/Categories?category=Yamaha%3ARoyal+Star&sfs=5c4cfe06 They even embroider them free as well. I do not have them yet, but I am going to order them. They list on eBay as well. And they have really good feedback. Sonny

Wow, there are alot of choices out there for LED kits. I just found this one, and I think it might be the one. The best price on LED brake light alone, was $60, The best Clear lens price, was $40, this kit has BOTH for $72 http://www.nopork.com/shop_product.asp?id=CTL%2D0038%2DL&grp=Yamaha+Royal+Star Also, they have a kit to convert your rear turn signals, into running lights. And it does not require a load equalizer. From what the guy told me on the phone, it is a RING of led's that go in AROUND the amber bulb. When you are riding, they are lit red, and act as running lights (which I never understood why Yamaha did not incorporate) And when you are signalling, they go out, to give you the amber turn signal. It certainly would increase visibility. And because you are still using the regular incandescent bulb, the load is right for flashers. http://www.nopork.com/shop_product.asp?id=PN01315 They also emailed me a small video which I have attached here so you can see. If any southern ontario members are interested, maybe a few of us could get a decent deal, or at least share in the brokerage fees. Or if any upstate NY members are willing to let me ship to you, I would be happy to ride over and meet up, maybe do a ride, and pick up the parts.

Is there a clear lens available? Any links? I kinda like the clear lens, espescially since our turn signals are clear, the red brake lens seems out of place. Or am I out of my tree on this?
-
Thanks Gary!! But I am a bit confused. The link you gave me, says it has RED LEDs, but I thought with a RED lens, we needed WHITE LEDs, wouldn't RED LEDs get washed out by a RED lens? I was sure that with RED LEDs, we needed a CLEAR LENS. And that unit says for Road Star, V-star, I assume your fit or you would not be suggesting it to me. I will contact them for some more information. Thanks again buddy! Sonny

I really want to get one of these units. I am just trying to figure out how much it is going to cost me. Because I am in Canada, the shipping is very high, and on top of that, there will be brokerage, and taxes on top. I used to have a friend in NY, who I would ship things to, then just go and pick them up. I will see, but the one from custom dynamics seems to be the better choice. The Kuryakyn one, looks like a couple LED's on a bulb, the dynamics has many more LED's. I will keep you informed. Thanks for all the advice. Sonny

This is not true. The string and tin can principle, works on transmission of vibration. As you may remember, the only way it worked, was when the string was stretched tight. The string on ear plugs, would hang loose, and not transmit any kind of vibration. The other principle was of acoustic transmission, the bottom of the can became a speaker, and amplified the vibration, creating analog sound. I might agree if you had said that the string could pose a choking hazzard, or something of the sort, but in this case, the string could only help you find them, and allow you to hang them around your neck between rides.

I am not sure if I can make it to maintainence day. But can I order some cheesecakes? How much for shipping? That OREO cheesecake sounds awesome! LOL! Sonny

I just got off the phone with Kelly Cycle Centre in Hamilton. They are the dealer that sold me the bike. I am happy to tell you, that they went to Yamaha, and are going to replace my gas tank. The tank is on order, and should be here in 2-3 weeks. All costs are being covered by Yamaha. And on top of that, due to the possibility of problems due to the rust, they are going to take apart my carbs and look for any signs of rust caused issues, and if needed strip down and take apart all associated parts and clean them. I have filled the gas tank 2 times so far, so I am not sure how much rust has passed through the system. I am very pleased to say that Kelly's came through, and took care of this problem for me. Cheers to them. Any Hamilton area riders who are looking for a decent shop, Kelly's has met my expectations so far. Tell them Sonny sent ya. Cheers! Sonny

Does anyone know if there is an LED Brake Light kit for the RSTD? I want to switch out the entire brake light assembly, and have a full LED kit. I find the LED lights on other bike just amazing. And it seems like a safety issue as well. Is there an aftermarket kit available that does not require extensive re-wiring? Any help most appreciated. Sonny

I have been with Riders Plus for about 2 years. Originally I was with Kingsway on a 2003 Honda Ace. I was a new rider. I checked Riders Plus and saved about 250 a year over my Kingsway quote, even with a group discount (CMA) I checked with my auto broker for coverage on my new RSTD, and riders plus was $150 cheaper. Just a quick note, Dominion Insurance has not gotten back into the motorcycle game, and plan to be competitive with Riders Plus, but they are not as of yet, at least with my bike and experience. Thanks so much for your offer of help, and I accept! I just looked up where you live, and it looks like about a 3 hour ride, ROADTRIP! I can use a nice little jaunt like that to help me with my goal of 8,000 KM this year. So, hopefully sometime in May would work, I will try to arrange my schedule to fit with yours.

Thanks for the invite, but I cannot do anything this weekend, I am working 4 shifts between Sat and Sun. But if you are willing, I can set something up for another time. I am not too proud to ask for help. The biggest thing for me, is I want to reattach the bar ends. Is this something you have done? I appreciate your willingness to help out a newb! Sonny

Thank you, and I hope to be attending on the 24th.

I just bought a set of Kuryakyn ISO grips to install on my new RSTD. But after reading some old threads here, I am a bit hesitant about losing my bar end weights. There are some members who have machined them to accept the weights, but I do not have the knowledge, nor access to the equipment to accomplish such a feat. Are there any local (Hamilton area) members, who have done the grip installation and would be willing to meet a new member? Or anyone who has successfully mounted the bar weights to the new grips, that could give me some help? My last bike I had for 5 years, and the only accessory I had was saddlebags. I did all my own maintainence, (oil changes, chain tightening etc) but I wanted to dress up my new bike and grips is my first addition. Any and all help is most appreciated. Sonny

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes myself. If there is anything I can do, or if you would just like to chat, please feel free to contact me. I was upset when they told me I was diabetic, but I cheered myself up by buying a new motorcycle, and here I am!! So all in all, not a bad thing.

I totally agree with you. I went to the dealer today, to just go over a couple of things, the biggest was the rust. He took pictures, and said he would contact yamaha, and see what they would do. I explained that the bike was sold to me as "brand new" not used, and since the rust was not part of the design of the bike, it should be under warranty. He seemed to agree, but just has to go through the formality of getting a warranty claim number or something. So I will keep you all posted, thanks for the help. Sonny

Thanks for the input. It is what I thought you might all say. Well, first thing in the morning, I am taking it back to the dealer, and I will try to get a new tank, or I will call Yamaha, and complain. Here are some pics so you can see better what I am talking about. The rest of the bike is awesome. It runs great, strong and nimble. The steering is very responsive, almost too much but I will get used to it. Thanks for the help. Sonny Oh and by the way, does anyone have a number (from Canada) for Yamaha directly? So if the dealer will not warranty it, or blows it off, I can go above?

I need some feedback here. As some of you may know, I recently purchased a brand new '06 RSTD. This bike had 0 KM on it, and has the full 5 year warranty. I bought it on Thurs, and took delivery yesterday. During the dealer walk around, one of the things he showed me was the gas cap, and how to take it off etc. (Bike has no owners manual, it is ordered and coming) Anyways, when he took off the gas cap, I noticed quite a bit of rust in the filler neck, and upon further inspection, there are spots of rust on the piece INSIDE the tank as well. I commented on this, but the dealer said it was ok, not to worry it was bare metal, almost all of them have rust etc. I don't know if it was the anticipation of the first ride or a temporary brain fart, but I did not question it further. I have put about 170 KM on it so far, and looked inside the tank again, and it is bothering me more. I took some pics, and will post here later. Any first impressions? Should a new bike have any rust? What is he talking about it being "bare metal" This is my first new bike, and first Yamaha. What kind of complications could a rusty tank cause me? Any help would be appreciated. Sonny Sonny

Ok, what the heck is Safety Chrome? I think my first upgrade will be new valve stem caps! That is about all I can afford after buying it.

Tank sticker?
Sunman replied to Principal's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
This is so bizzarre! I went into the dealer today, to drop of the plate portion of my current bike ownership, so he can transfer my plates to my new bike, which I pick up next week. While I was in the shop, I went and had a walk around my bike, and just smiled, until I saw those pesky stickers. I asked him if he would remove them for me before I picked it up, and to my utter surprise, he said "NO". At first I thought he was kidding, but he told me a story about another customer, blah blah, tank scratched, blah blah, had to repaint, blah blah blah... Anyways, here is my answer, perfect! I think I am going to like this forum! Cheers, Sonny
