That is what my thought was. Try something new and different. If and when Yam decides to UG this Bike, I can always sell the HD and get back to the RSV. Thanks Guys. This was not an easy and overnight decision. I have been on this fence now for three years.

Well, wow, how does one part with ten years of great rides and memories?! A bittersweet moment in my life is about to take place. I am selling my 1999 RSV. It is time for a change. The Mrs. is not too happy, but she knows sometimes you just have to make some changes and move forward. I am flying out to Belton, MO this week to pick up a 2009.... oh god I can't believe I am going to write this.... HD Ultra Classic. Yeah, I know - hard to believe, even for me it is hard to believe, and then ride it back home - 11 hours on the road. The thing is this, I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for Yammie to update this bike. I want the modern "stuff" that HD puts on their bikes. I rode one a week ago, it felt smaller than our RSV's, and not quite as "robust", but it was smooth, lighter for "me" (I am small guy), and I liked all the modern gadgetry. Now I did not just get whatever the local Dealer had... I read, researched and looked for what "I" wanted - features and colors scheme. I still think the bikes are a tad over priced. If you want to see The Soon-to-be new ride I still have my 2006 Yam Stratoliner for my tootin round town fun. So let the chastising begin! So if ya know anyone looking for a very loaded, clean, well kept, pristine, 1999 RSV - send em my way! I put an ad here on VROrg and it is listed on CraigsList

I love how you did your trailer - nice job!

Oh you can get trunks! Tons of guys have transformed their Strats into excellent looking and very functional full touring bikes - really amazing. BUT I think the RSV is a more comfortable and smoother riding/running machine. I can't give it up, never thought I would EVER become a 2 bike man....
-
I figured out an easy process, if I am taking my 5 yo girl out, RSV, if I will be out for more than 4 hours, RSV, all other riding is the Strat. Which means I find all kinds of errands to run while she is in school! ;-)

I updated mine with Polks - -
So while my RSV is getting a new clutch and springs, tune up, some touch up paint, and other "stuff" done to it so it is ready to ride later this month to OH, I thought I would share some pictures of my other scoot - very very very fun bike - great for tootin round town and just day scoots. My RSV is STILL the Cadillac of choice for me.

I have a '99 RSV with 26K miles on it and I have owned that as the orig owner since 2000. I also bought a Strat '06 last year. Both are great bikes. Both run very well. The RSV is smoother and glides and rides like a luxury car. The Strat has torque and feels like a cruiser should - more like a sports car. I am vertically challenged as well, 5'8" w/30" inseam. I had the the "Butt"ler mod done to my pillow top seats as well on my RSV - love it. The two bikes are two different beasts. Both ride well, feel great, and handle superbly for what they are to each its own. I have ridden Honda GW's, HD's tour and cruisers, and Victory's. I still like the RSV and Strat over those. And this is just MY opinion. I think Yamaha makes a very solid machine. Long distance - RSV has a better ride for me - less vibration, smoother ride, more comfy room for passenger (wife), and bigger storage. SO when we take trips and we have several days to ride - RSV hands down. It also has the communication system - built in. Around town and short "day" rides - I like my Strat, it is fun, quick, and sparkly! I can do about 6 hours top, of solid riding - the Strat has more room, but you sit further back from the bars then an RSV - and I have the risers and all that jazz just short of the flanders bars, so my arms and shoulders start to ache by end of day on the Strat. I can't wait till Yammy updates the RSV w/FI and some other modern conveniences, that being said, I am still VERY happy with my choice - and I am a picky SOB. :-) YMMV - but asking anyone here what they think of an RSV is like asking a kid in a candy store if they like sweets. ;-) I know several people will chime in on this - most of them have ridden other bikes as well, and some even changed bikes and then came back, some changed and regret it. Best thing for YOU to do - is ride one. Ride an HD. Ride a Honda GW, ride a Victory Vision or the like, ride em ALL. See which one fits you best. If the RSV does, then know one thing, you have a very dependable bike that will give you YEARS of riding pleasure, fun, comfort, and stability. HTH

antenna question
Christo replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did the Marshall Mod to [ame=http://www.flickr.com/photos/christo/sets/72157617011298781/]Marshall Mods - a set on Flickr[/ame] about 3 years ago. So the connectors and the antennae are the same, just one is "tuned" differently. But originally my CB was on the left side of bike, if you are sitting on it. HTH -
Those cracks look scary!

Grand and confusing. I know riding style affects tire wear, but there has got to be some form of common ground to work from and compare when it comes to a tire purchase. We all want something quiet, gripping, non-cracking and non-chunking, that will give us 10K or more miles on it. I wonder how many people "mix" tire brands - one brand for the front and one for the rear based upon their demands and needs?
-
So let me get this straight... For the last 2 years or so, almost every discussion on this forum regarding tires for our RSV's has been about the Avons - people swear by them, it was almost a religion. Now Avons are on the DO NOT BUY list. So what are our options? Someone mentioned Michelin? And Dunlop's (I was told DunFLOPS) E3's? What else? I have Metz's on mine currently - 2 years now and about 5K miles, maybe a tad more, so far so good, I like the ride and handling. I know that when I first purchased my bike, whatever were the OEM orig on that back in '99 - those were icky. Not impressed with the handling or the mileage wear I did NOT get out of them.

I have one Zumo 550. 2 motorcycles and 2 cars. I can use it in any of them. I just bought an extra mount for bike#2. It has come in handy many of times, and in the rain.

Oldest & YOungest: WHO WAS 77 YR OLD RIDER? Lost record. Help!
Christo replied to Zfrebird4's topic in Watering Hole
My wife and I are 28 days apart. I have been riding since I was 11. We are both currently 43 and will soon be 44. We are still spring chicks! :-) -
Do you have the Yamaha Trunk Bag?
Christo replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I got the Besteem one about a year ago. I have used it once, works great. It has a "rain" cover, while the bag is already designed to keep water out, the cover is not much help. I think some one mentioned a plastic bag and bungee net, this would be my recommendation as well. -
Heel-Toe Shifter Options
Christo replied to Christo's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well I solved the "spongy" feel - adjusted the linkage, that was also part of my shifting problem. When upshifting the bottom of the shifter was hitting the floorboard causing it to not shift correctly. What a difference. I asked the dealer to look into this last year, said they could not find anything. I ordered those Yammie chrome pegs for the shifter, they should be in soon. -
I took the plunge and ordered the Show Chrome with the wrist rest, I got the ones that allows me to use the weights that come with our bike - hopefully. As soon as they arrive and I install them on my '99 RSV, I will post here and let everyone know if I liked them.
-
I am also looking to replace my stock grips. I do not like the Kuryakyn one's either. What are our options? Do we need to keep the weights? Do other aftermarket ones come with weights? Aside from the universal throttle cramp busters, do any of the aftermarket grips with or without weights accommodate some sort of throttle rest? Please share your wisdom!

CB & radio Antenna
Christo replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Nope - just make sure that when you cut the wire for the existing antenna you cut as close as you can to old hardware, so you have enough cable for the new ends (common sense really). Also do a very clean and tight job of wrapping where the new cable ends and antenna meet with elec. tape. If I did this mod with no issues - ANYONE can do it! ;-) -

CB & radio Antenna
Christo replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did this same thing. I used the fold over mounts as well. FM and CB work just GREAT! I went to my local CB shop and they tuned the antennae for the CB. http://www.flickr.com/photos/christo/sets/72157617011298781/ HTH -
Heel-Toe Shifter Options
Christo replied to Christo's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
How "snug" do those doodads fit over the existing metal posts - I have removed the rubber that was once around them, can I assume you had to do the same thing when you put those on? -
Heel-Toe Shifter Options
Christo replied to Christo's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
ALWAYS appreciated! I am just concerned that it might be a tad pricey, but I will look into it of course. I am hoping someone has "been there done that" kinda thing. All suggestions are welcome and I do appreciate it - I was just razzin ya little. Thank you! -
