I think we got more problems than just high gas prices
a1bummer replied to friesman's topic in Watering Hole
Didn't thieves get their hands cut off in the good old days? -
What would be the advantage to using a swivel if I already have a ball hitch that acts much the same? It would come in handy when I have my bike on the sidestand, or uneven ground. Are there some other benefits I'm not seeing?

Poor Man's Brake lamp and turn signal upgrade
a1bummer replied to KiteSquid's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
That was a thought that went through my wee little brain. I see some of the prices of the accessories for bikes and can't help but wonder... Why can't I just make it myself? The cost of the tools needed could be recovered if I mass produced and sold what I made at cheaper prices than what you find on eBay. Then there's simply making blueprints and letting someone with all the tools and space do the work for me. At least that's what my plan is so far with some mod parts I've come up with for a remote controlled truck I have. -
Poor Man's Brake lamp and turn signal upgrade

I don't much like the prices much either. Especially when I don't know if I will be happy with the end product. I'm one of those who like to see things with his own eyes and touch things before I fork out my cash. I've been using any info on the net to get an idea if it would be better If I made my lights myself. So far in my spare time, I'm just working on a couple simple prototypes for the auxiliary lights with the wedge type bulbs and turn signals for my 84. The right signal will blink from left to right and the left blink from right to left. I have a working prototype for the turn signals. But it only has 10 LEDs that blink in sequence. I want to go to with about 30-40 ultrabright LEDs. By using capacitors and transistors I get very low power draw and brightly lit LEDs. I'll keep ya guys posted -
If I was going to paint the engine in my 84... what kind of paint would be the best to use? I'm not to sure about painting the whole thing. Maybe just do some highlights to match the color of the bike.

I've had brain farts like that myself:buttkick:

That's where I would start. Then I would check the charging system. If it's not charging properly, it will run till the battery gets dead enough. JMHO.

I believe this site give the info your looking for. http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html Lumen to Candle power Divide the number of lumens you have produced, or are capable of producing, by 12.57 and you get the candlepower equivalent of that light source. According to this sight anyway. http://www.theledlight.com/lumens.html -
Running lean?

Well after I checked everything else I could think of, I started putting some Seafoam through the system. I mixed it about 1oz./gln., and part way through my second tank it seemed to do the trick. The difference was night & day. I'm still having the charging problem, though it has started charging better. I hooked up my digital volt/ohm meter and while at highway speeds, (or any speed for that matter), it's charging at 13.2-13.7 volts. This leads be to the same conclusion as some of you have already mentioned. Obviously there must be something in the wiring somewhere causing a problem. In the mean time, I noticed that the gear indicator on the dash isn't working properly. It shows 4th. or 5th., sometimes 2nd., it varies from time to time. Now while I have been trying to figure out what the gremlins have been up to, I started hearing an earie not so pleasant, scrapping sound coming from the engine. First thought, NOW WHAT!!! That noise went away, but I still can't help but think about what may have been causing it. Well shortly after the bike started running like it should, I started hearing a knock when I hit the gas at lower rpms. Not a knock like I had crappy gas or like my timing was off, but a knock like a main or rod bearing was going (What would a loose timing chain sound like?). Then on the way home, it seamed to get worse. I could hear the knock at any speed, though not as loud. Now I can't help but wonder, WHAT THE HECK IS CAUSING ALL THESE PROBLEMS ALL AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME?!?!?! This bike seemed to be running perfectly last year. It was kept in my garage covered up all winter. What have I done to anger the motorcycle gods so? None of these thing appear to be connected in anyway. Except for the scrapping and the knocking anyway. Is it possible I'm missing something that should be obvious? Could any of the these issues be related? Do I have to sacrifice some virgins to the mc gods or something? -
I made a little bit of a mistake in that last post. It wasn't the Congressman's office that called. I was the office of State Senator Pat Kreitlow. It was an email from the congresman's office that I had gotten. Dear Mr. Yeske: Since your email regarding your temporary disabled permit and parking issues involve a state agency and not a federal one, I have taken the liberty of forwarding your email to your State Senator who has jurisdiction over state agencies such as the DMV. I have asked the office of State Senator Pat Kreitlow to contact you. For your reference, his email address is Sen.Kreitlow@legis.wisconsin.gov . Please feel free to contact our office in the future with any questions or concerns you may have involving the federal government and its’ agencies. Sincerely, Terry S. I got it taken care of this morning. I ended up talking with Doug Olson, who is the Director of Workforce Development & Recruitment, instead of the President of the CVTC. I didn't even have to get ugly. He himself is a rider. He said he had a couple bikes and several others in his family, including his wife I believe, have bikes. He was very polite and understood what was going on. After he voided the tickets and made a note of my plate number and stuff so he could tell the parking enforcement to leave me alone, I told him about contacting my congressman, the local media, and about the posts here. I told him thank you and that I would call off the hounds. By the way, I did get a call from my congressman's office this afternoon, and they said that they would take care of the problem. I told them the problem had been resolved this morning and thanked them for calling. I also got an email back from the DOT & DMV Special Plates Unit. They let me know that there is in fact a temp disability plate I could get. I wonder why the people at the local DMV told me that there was only a plate for permanent disabilities??? What else would one expect from a government outfit? Thanx for everyones input. Hopefully this won't be an issue later.

Waiting to speak with the CVTC President right now.

Just got done sending an email to my congressman Dave Obey. Think I'll hear anything back?

i don't think there is any discrimination it sounds like your breaking the law. if you don't have a valid handicap plate you will have to get one. or change the law. The HC cards aren't valid on a mc, I can ONLY get a hc plate if I have PERMANENT disability. If I can't park in a HC space unless I display either a HC card or have HC plates, Then that leave us with motorcycles and temporary disibilities out. That is the very definition of discrimination. The ticket also states that it was NOT a MC parking space. So that means that even if I had HC plates or could hang my HC card on my bike, they still wouldn't let me park there. Again, that would also be an example of discrimination. HC cards being invalid on a mc is yet another example of discrimination. I really don't think anybody had the intention of discriminating between a perminate and temporary disability (other than time) when they came up with these laws. But the way I and the guy behind the counter at the DMV interperet this way, the yahooz interperet in a way that discriminates against all of us mc riders and mc riders with a temporary disability.

Just sent the local news reporter an email. Mark Povolny with channel 13 here in Eau Claire, WI.

Got that number already. They are out today and tomorrow. But I will get ahold of them. Thanx very much for everyones support so far.

Local media was one of my first ideas also.

One vehicle, one space was what I told these guys too. By the way, I went outside and checked my bike a bit ago and sure enough... ticket number 2 in as many days. This would make 3 total since last fall. The first was voided out when the guy saw the flaw in this situation. Why the change of heart? Who knows?

I had ask others about this possible problem a while back in here before. Yesterday after class here at the CVTC, (Chippewa Valley Technical Institute), in Eau Claire, WI., there was a parking ticket on my bike both for it not being a MC parking space and that I was parked in a disabled parking space. I do Have a disabled parking permit. And I do have a legitimate and very well documented disability. For some reason though, even after 2.5 years of having these problems, my doctor will only give me a temporary disabled parking permit. After my last post on this subject, I did find out that WI. does have disabled plates for motorcycles, but only for permanent disabilities. So that mean that until my doctor gives me permanent disabled status, I have nothing I can legally display on my bike to show I have a problem. Anyhow the jerks down at the parking enforcement, even though they have seen the proof that I have documented disability, refuse to void out this ticket. Depending on how a person interprets the paperwork I got with the parking permit, it can be a little confusing. They way I read it is that the permit is not valid on a mc so therefore I needn't display it on my mc. The guy behind the counter at the DMV agreed and told me to carry my paperwork if there was ever any question. The jackass here at the CVTC parking enforcement interprets it that motorcycles are not permitted to park in the disabled parking spaces period! She called someone at the DOT, and the woman on the other end agreed with her. She also stated that only a mc with disabled plates are permitted to park there. Therefore this would mean that if I have a temporary disability and a motorcycle, I don't have the right to park there. But on the other hand if it's a permanent disability and I have a bike with disabled plates only, then I have a right the right to park there. But still even with all that, I still can't park in one of there car parking spaces with my bike. Does this sound like some discrimination going on or what? Should I start looking for a lawyer? Any input on this matter will be greatly appreciated. P.S. I rode my bike to school again today, so I expect to find more tickets on my bike again. If this is the way it is gonna have to be, I will not be able to get to my classes anymore.

I picked up an old 78 Honda CB400 TII Hawk that was in really good condition for a friend of mine that has never ridden before. After I got my VR he went out and got his MC lisence so he could ride too. There is no way I am gonna let a greenhorn ride my VR, so I've been keeping an eye out for a good first bike for him to get used to before getting a real bike. Anyhow, I got this CB400 from a classmate for free. He said it would still start but ran like crap. He had it for a lot of year and could never let it just go to the boneyard. Ya, it would start, but only would run on the 2nd cylinder. I pulled the plugs and the first thing I saw was splitfire plugs:bang head:. First thought was a hole burnt in the piston. Stuck my thumb over the plug hole and started it up. No compression! Got a flashlight out and turned the piston to TDC. The hole is about an inch or so big. I've seen way to many vehicles come into my shop that had some sort of severe problems due to some fancy type of sparkplugs. Now that I've made this short story really long, anybody know where to get old Honda parts at a reasonable price:confused24:?
