  1. I have a couple projects for my '06 RSTD where I have been told that I ought to wire the device straight to the battery, or words to that effect. The idea is to not tap into an existing wire, but to get closer to the original source of power. Air horns, where they need lots of juice to get really loud. My passing lamps, where I want to have them on regardless whether the headlight is on high or low beam. I'll wire a relay so that if the running lights are on, the passing lamps are on. My question is: how? How do I energize these? What is the physical connection, and where? Do you go into the fuse box, or splice a wire, or what? For the passing lamps and other front-end projects, how do you get the wire back to the battery? Do you remove the tank and find some sort of cable chase to run the wires? I suppose duct tape ain't the thing. I've delayed re-doing my passing lamps because of my lack of understanding, and I am buying myself a pair of Bad Boy air horns from Harbor Freight for Christmas. So I am hoping to spend between now and then understanding what to do and maybe doing the passing lamps. I'm not a dunce, but photos would be invaluable. But really, any help would be very appreciated. Dave
  2. Well I really don't know where to start. I've had some close calls in my days, but this morning was almost too close. To set the scene, it was around 7 am running a little late which knocked this creature of habit off a little. Overcast, wet roads but it was daylight. I ride with my bright lights and passing lights ALL THE TIME and at night or low light conditions I always have my High Intensity LED's on. All 134 of those Green Suckers. Honestly it's extremely hard to not see my bike. Coming up on a traffic signal (which was green for me)at 60Mph I noticed that cars at the traffic light entering the highway were stopped. On the other side of the light was a gas station and as I was approaching the intersection I saw a car leave the pumps, ok nothing out of the ordinary here. Well this MORON didn't even slow down and just left the pump and shot right out into my lane. I was literally no more than 40 feet away doing 60 in the same lane. Now here is where having situational awareness saved my bacon. Coming up to the intersection I had observed an SUV barreling up in the left hand lane, well he was passing me and the Moron who pulled out in front of me at the same time, the whole time he was laying on the horn at me because I had to lane split between the two or slam the back of the car that pulled out in front of me. No time or distance to brake and try and get out of that one, plus the fact that the roads were wet. I went past the car on it's left at the same time the SUV was passing me on the left. The space was no more than a foot wider than my RSV. To say I was upset would be putting it mildly. Once I got my wits about me I quickly stopped the bike in the middle of the highway, got off and was yelling, screaming, challanging, and threatening that Moron who had stopped on the highway about 100 yards back. I stood in the middle of the Highway for about a minute daring that jerk to come closer. Finally I came to my senses and realized I was causing a pretty big traffic hazzard myself so I threw a leg over and continued on to work. I picked a bad day to be running late and forget to take my blood pressure meds. Sorry folks I just had to vent.
  3. I see where some venture rider are using a 30 amp relay when putting on passing lights. My question is where are they mounting this relay, And do they wire it to the low beam or always on? If adding another switch where did they mount it?
  4. I want to share a very close call I had as a reminder of the importance of getting past these transport trucks and not riding beside them. I always lag behind a truck for a bit then gun it to get past them very quickly so as not to be in there blind spot for long. Well, as I was passing this transport I was doing as I always do when a tire blew out from the truck. For what ever reason I had already moved further over to the left then I normally do. The tire literally exploaded forward, sideways and to the rear of the truck. I was fortunate enough to see the debris and swerve back towards the truck to fit inbetween the debris as I acceleated even faster to fit through the open air that I saw. Rubber went infront of my bike and just behind it. I was very lucky that I didn't slow down or I would have been knocked off my bike. I was lucky who knows what is best to do, slow down or speed up, it all depends on the circumstance. In any case I just wanted to air this to remind everyone to pay special attention and get as far away from the trucks when you are passing them. I'm going back on the highway this afternoon and riding to Niagara on the Lake for the night and I have to say I may not be passing too many trucks.
  5. I just had the dealership install OEM passing lamps on my '06 RSTD. I got home and wanted to show some friends and none of the head lamps were on. An investigation found the headlamp fuse blown. There was a spare 15 amp fuse, and I put that on. The main headlamp came on, and I discovered the passing lamps were toggled off. When I toggled them on, the fuse blew immediately. My question: should the combination of headlamp and passing lamps work with a 15A fuse? I have the halogen version ( STR-4NK35-10-01 ) of the passing lamps and the OEM headlight. Of course, the dealership didn't return any of the installation or operation information that came with the lamps so I don't know the current draw. They were working at the dealership but were dead when I got home. Maybe something broke loose and is grounding?
  6. To all our non-USA members (maybe non-North American members), PLEASE learn our driving rules before you come here to tour on your bikes. Solid yellow line means do not pass. Dashed yellow line (on 2 lane road) means you can pass if there is NO oncoming traffic. While on hwy 20 today in Middlebury, IN, we saw 3 bikes with European plates. Five people total. They had been parked in town looking at a map. We watched as these 3 bikes weaved in and out, passing cars and trucks, in both passing and no passing zones. Cars, trucks and even a motorhome was off the shoulder, almost in the ditch to avoid hitting these bikes. I'm just glad I did not have to witness a crash.
  7. Has anybody put the Yamaha Stratoliner Passing Lamps on their RSV? I used the search function but could not find any information. I would really like to see a photo of them installed. Also how is the beam pattern between the two bubls? I am hopeing to find a dual bulb lamp to fit my RSV, with a driving light pattern and a fog light pattern lamp in one housing. The Stratoliner Passing Lamps look like they might work.
  8. Will passing lights from a Harley Davidson fit on a 2nd Gen Venture? If not, where's the best place to get passing lights? I've checked South Seattle Yamaha Sports Plex and the don't have them on their web site. Thanx, Glenn
  9. Seems like I remember reading a thread about passing light spacers. Can't seem to find it in search. I want to get one, so can any one of you point me in the right direction?
  10. What's s good replacement for the standard passing lamp? One of mine burned out today on my 07 RSV. The one I have is the sealed beam type.
  11. Well, Sheet happens (Yeah, but why to me???). Monday morning, back from Chicago week trip, so as every day run my bike to job. Perfect stability, with the bigger winshield I got almost 90 mph with no vibration at all. I was amazed about it. Now, on a stupid main street, at almost 20 mph a lady talking on the cell & driving cross a wet street without looking at the both sides (I was coming north on the main street). As soon as I press the brake handle (Of course I should use the rear brake first, but my hands where faster than my right foot), the rear side of the bike was faster than the front wheel, and of course on a slipper street I went down. On me, only a broken pant, a burn on my knee, and that was all. On the bike, my front left turning light got the ring broken, the passing lamp got the ring out, both visors are OK, and the internal bolt that holds both lamps on the mounting passing lamps got broken at the middle of the hollow thread, and some new scratches on the side of the new winshield that already come scratched (See my Excelent Condition thread...) I believe the worst part was when I went to the dealer to get new parts: No replacements, I need to get a full kit of everything.... As the passing lamp mounting braket only got a little smashed, I think that I can fix it and will be impossible to notice, except with a magnifier trying to access between the two lamps. The passing lamp ring is only with a few scratches but seems that something is missing as the small with the nut that hold it, seems easy to open. Conclusion: Do somebody has a ring for the passing lamp and a ring for the turn light to sell, and may be the bolt that links both lamps? I forget this is for a 1997 Royal Star. I don't need to replace all since there where minor stuffs. No, still don't need a new knee. Thanks
  12. Went to my local Oriellys to purchase a replacment seal beam for my passing lamps. He did not have one that matched the 30W that came with them but said he could order one and they were priced at $30 each. I ask him if there was another one that would work. He checked his stock and came up with a Wagner 4411 Off Road Light that is a 35W. The Wagner Seal Beams were $8.99 ea. It will be interesting to see how long they last. Mavrick
  13. I just installed my new passing lamps on my 99 RSV. I love how they look, but since they have been on the bike I have had nothing but problems with the lighting. First I blew a fuse while trying to adjust the angle of the passing lamps. (my fault, shorted one wire) Fixed that, then I Took it to Meijer to get ice cream and try out the new lights. (loved them really an improvement) But when I came out of Meijer, I had no lights at all, no running lights, no headlight, no taillight, no passing lamps. I did however have a brake light. I'm pretty sure I blew a main fuse, but i'm not sure why. All of the parts are genuine Yamaha and wired as Yamaha recommends, which i'm not sure I like since I have to pull the fairing off every time I blow a fuse. Has anyone else run into this before? Or is anyone better at electrical then I am and can recommend me to check something that may cause this? ANY INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE frusterated Big Mike:confused24:
  14. Greetings, Getting ready to install a set of passing lamps. Looks straight forward and time consuming. Any tips, tricks and short cuts? Thank you in advance. hh
  15. My passing lights and my Sebler horn are both out! With the passing lights I hear the soleniod click when I push the switch, but they do not come on! Any ideas on what could be the issue. I checked all fuses and they all look great. The passing lights are power off the front receptical and the horn is power from the circuit going to the rear receptical (if I had one). Any ideas or thought would be great. Thanks BikerJohn
  16. I want a brighter light for my 99 it looks as if the stock is sealed beam? What options are there that won't look to different then the passing lamps. I just want a whiter beam.
  17. I just bought my 02 RSV this past December. I am trying to remove the headlamp visor that was installed by the previous owner. Will I have to split the fairing to get to it? My second question is regarding the passing lamps. I have been reviewing this site for the best alternative in making the lights brighter. When I opened the chrome pieces to remove the visors from the passing lamps, the whole bulb/light came out-attached by two wires that are screwed to the back of the passing lamp housing. I don't know whether these passing lamps are OEM or aftermarket. It looks as if I can't replace just the bulb without replacing the whole unit that fits inside of the passing lamp housing. Is there any one that knows a site that sells the whole unit for brighter lighting. I don't think just a H3 bulb will work. Thanks for listening! Cubby
  18. About a month ago I go out to get on the bike and my speedometer does not work. No gas gauge or anything. No problem, pull the fuse and tested it. No, the fuse is good, but just for the heck of it I replaced it anyway. Speedometer works! No problem. Noticed a week or so ago that the cruise control does not work. Not a real issue, because I rarely use it. When I leave the office this afternoon, my passing lamps don't work. So I pull the fuses from the fuse box and test all of them. They all test ok, but I replace them anyway and the passing lamps now work. I don't know if the cruise works yet, but I would bet that it does. Any Ideas? I use a multimeter to test and I know it works. On a related issue. The plastic screw that holds the bottom of the lower farings together seems to be striped or something. I could not get it loose. Any problems with drilling this thing out?
  19. Many of you have installed Tony's passing light extension bracket. I just did and I love not having to drop the lights to split the fairing. I noticed, however, that the clear plastic lowers are attached to the passing light bar, and that extending the passing lights also moved the lowers away from the forks about 2 inches so that the rubber bumper no longer supported the lowers. I've read that others here have had lowers break when they were not supported against the fork. For this reason I installed a 2" bolt through the bottom hole in the bracket and put a rubber tip on the end of it so now it rests nicely against the fork. Just wondering what some of you done with this situation. I'm interested in how others have dealt with this. Thanks!
  20. I am installing passing lights. Does anyone know what the law is in Ontario Canada with regards to when they can be on. Ie; with hi beams on, low beams on or all the time. I would prefer all the time but dont want to get a ticket. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim
  21. Does any one know if the halogen passing lamps for the RSTD will fit the RSV light bar?I am planning to buy a light bar,but would rather have the halogen lamps, if they will fit.The part # is STR-4NK35-10-01.By the way, the best price I have found for accessories is MotorsportsSupercenter.com in Hamilton,AL.They actually have 2 different websites. The other one is MotorsportsSuperstore.com.The cost is a little more, but it offers $5.95 shipping on all orders over $50 in USA. Just check both sites to get best overall price with shipping.
  22. Ok I have searched this and read many threads about our issue. I know our system def needs to get an upgrade but there has been some head aches getting a new stator made. So, Is there anyone that is running a trailer with all LEDS, a Garmin streetpilot 2720, XM radio, CB radio, yam passing lamps, yam tail wing with led, all stock bulbs in other lights, and heated gloves (firstgear, warm & safe)? I would most likely turn off the passing lamps during the day but at night def will be running them. If there is, have you had any problems running highways? Thanks for the help everyone. I def love this forum always full of great info. TheKid
  23. I started to install my passing lamps today and discovered the turn signals don't fit on the "turn signal adaptors". The adaptors are too big for the turn signals. They're not even close! I removed the grommet on the turn signals and they're still not close. What's up with this! Am I screwing up or did the give me the wrong parts? I just looked at my 97 RSTC and the turn signal mounts are a larger diameter than my Venture. Did they change the Diameter on the newer Venture? mine is an 07.-Jack:bang head:
  24. I just ordered Passing Lamps from Yamaha along with the cool little Visors. Is this something that is difficult to install myself or should I take it to the shop? Do we have a tech article on this? http://images.motorsportdealers.com/common/MediaLibrary/CatalogImages/62/250/7439fa007.jpg http://images.motorsportdealers.com/common/MediaLibrary/CatalogImages/62/250/73599698a.jpg
  25. Does anyone know if the royal star and ventures use the same passing light bars? Thanks tj
