    Too HOT

Left this morning for a ride. It was nice weather...warm and comfortable. On the way home the last 100 miles were too hot to ride. At least it was too hot on the Valkyrie. Damn, that thing can put out some heat. I don't remember the Valk being so hot last year, but I'm sure it was. It was 96 by my patio thermometer when I got home. If this is how summer is gonna be I might only ride at night.
  2. I have changed my anti freeze and have let the bike run now for 20 minutes, long enough that it got hot enough for the cooling fan to kick on. I notice that the overflow is about 1 inch above normal full level. So I suppose this is normal. If there was any air locks or reason for the bike to get hot (boil over), should it have done so in that length of time ??? Never changed antifreeze in a bike before.............. No leaks anywhere and I did the whole drain except the pump. Thank you all for your advice. :confused24::confused24:
  3. All fluids and filters changed out and/or cleaned, new brake pads on the rear, and new plugs installed. Wow, what a difference that made! The old plugs had about 30K miles on them, and still looked pretty good, but it was time. With all that done, I took a 240 mile ride today, and the RSV just seems to glide through the air and through each gear. All of the minor little vibrations are gone, the acceleration is amazing, the idol now purrs, and the engine never seemed to get that hot, even though it hit 88 today. I am now truly ready for my trip to DC next week, and the other 3 long rides we have planned over the next 3 or 4 months. Doin my happy dance!!!!!
  4. What type of windscreen is on this 1st gen? It's enormous- I want one! I much prefer very little wind buffeting. There's always plenty of airflow, even on hot days. 5. This "thing" that I bought is very close to going on the road. Lot's has been done, including shimming the valves and new gaskets. Shout out to skydoc_17 here for the loan of the kit. The job is easy, for anyone considering it, even if access is tight. Now it doesn't leak oil or water ... both cured. I took it for a test ride this morning and there are issues: First .... The cruise control is behaving normally. All the lights are doing exactly as they are supposed to. Clutch switch is operating normally. The only problem is that the cruise won't engage. Second, and more important .... I rode about seven miles at various speeds up to 70mph. It drives well once warm. On the over run, and at starting, it still pops and backfires. Suggestions welcome. It also has a hot starting problem. When I got back I shut off the engine. I then tried to re-start it within a couple of minutes .... nuttin'. The starter motor tried to turn, turned slowly, not enough to fire. For all the world it sounded like a flat battery. However, the battery is fully charged, and charging well. I pushed it into the shop ... that front braking is still binding a bit (caliper is going to have to be cleaned). Twenty minutes later I went out, pushed the button and it started, first try, with no hesitating. I am leaning towards a starter motor issue .... Maybe that has to come off for a refurb .... Am I right and is it hard to do ... removing it, that is?
  6. this morning i decided to ride my bike to work,39 degrees. as i let it warm up, choke off i noticed a ticking sound out of right exhaust pipe and then seen steam vapors coming out left side exhaust but not right. left exhaust hot -right cold? started my truck to see if both exhaust steamed and they did, duels. rode to work 3 miles , steam vapors gone and both sides hot now.couldnt hear ticking anymore but seems to me both sides should have been steaming togather. you think cly. not firing on right side??? now i worried something wrong. should i be?
  7. hey guys i found this tip but not able to contact the writer to see if it worked or not? " Overheating Solution Just want to pass a tip to Venture owners who have an overheating problem, especially in cities on hot days. I bought a 1983 Venture Royale which probably had two or three owners. One of them connected the t-fan to a manual switch which I thought was a good idea. But the temp needle would almost jump to red, even with the fan on. My problem is now solved. I took the tstat out and also found that the fan switch was incorrectly connected to the fan. Instead of bringing air to the engine it would run inversed and push the air through the radiator. Imagine! Now the needle never goes more than halfway on the temp gauge and with the fan on it will go down to just over 1/4. Please pass this message on the V-folks as it might help someone out with heating problems. Keep up the good work and thanks. Norman Rémillard " now my question is is it ok or not to run it without the thermo and do it this way, reason im looking and asking is,i live in st.pete florida always hot and in town stop and go traffic the gauge gets way up there 3/4 and a hair above if i sit to long with no real airflow,so i already have my fan switch hooked up so i can turn on for sure when needed, but what about it? no thermo make it run cooler or not? thnx in advance for any and all help. troy

  10. Boy, someone did You people have more snow than usual, and snow where you don't normally get it -- and the east coast of Australia is getting hammered with rain and floods. Over here in the west we are dry and hot and fighting bush fires. Poor Queensland won't have much left if it don't stop raining!! Glad we moved back here.
  11. OK its winter!!! Once in a while the Warden gets busy and don't want to do my eggs, taters, biscuits, saugage & gravy. So I take a look in the fridge to see what has been left there. This morning there was some leftover O'Brian potato Hamburger Helper. Fried a couple eggs tossed them on top along with a hot pepper and I'll have to remember that one.... GOOOD!! Now gotta move that fire extinguisher back to the bathroom!!! Whats your favorite leftover???
  12. Thought some of you might enjoy my recipe for this during the upcoming season... 13. I was looking at one of my street rod magazines today and came across this web site for hot rod batteries crystal cell technology??? http://www.hotrodbatteries.com/ One model (HRB 11) is even smaller (5.125 x 3.250 x 6.500) than the RSV battery(6.875" x 3.4375" x 6.125") with 375 cranking amps. Looks like the HRB 14 with 475 cranking amps would work too. They don't advertise the price so I'm sure it must be kind of high considering a 100% replacement five year warranty. Just thought I would through it out there for anyone who might be interested. If nothing else, I think I might look into one for my street rod.
  14. It is an I have a bowl of piping hot apple crisp (and you don't) gloating thread!!!
  15. Barb and I got home from our trip and we're both still grinning. The weather was great, the bike ran perfect, and we had a lot of laughs with our friends. The 4 of us travelled from southern IL to Branson on state and U.S. highways---no interstates at all. Had a great couple of days in Branson. It was too bad that I hadn't read Wild Hair's message while I was in his neighborhood----we were only about 40 miles away and could have visited. Then we went down to Hot Springs. We took Rte. 7 from Harrison to Hot Springs and it is a great road on a bike. We continued our "no interstate" theme and rode to Tunica Miss. and let Mr Harrah put us up for a great price. On the way back to Illinois we stopped in Memphis and had lunch on Beale St. We intend on going back next year for their Wednesday bike night on Beale St. It sounds like there are a lot of bikes there for that. All told, we put just shy of 2,000 miles on the bike. Only one small thing to take care of. Our friends 1800cc Wing decided that it wanted to roll forward and off the kickstand. Our Venture was sharing a parking spot and kept the Wing from hitting the ground. To do this, the Venture had to sacrifice it's radiator cover (it cracked). If somebody has one that they want to part with, please send me a private message. Frank
  16. I am looking to get a direct vent type gas hot water heater. Most likely a 50 gallon. Does anyone here know what brands or features I should look for, or steer clear of? This is kind of what I am looking for. My house needs a new roof and the 30 year old gas hot water heater is the only thing using the chimney, so if I get a direct vent water heater then I can have the crumbling chimney taken down to below the roof line at the time they do the roof and save the cost of rebuilding the chimney or later patching the new roof. I am wide open for comments, suggestions or even snide remarks.
  17. Well, I took a few hours this evening to give a friend of mine a hand moving. She had a bunch of bulky and heavy items she couldn't get her self, so no big deal. Got them moved to her new place. On my way out, we were chatting in the front of her building when another young lady walked up. We all three talked for a few minutes (apparently this gal is the mother of three young boys). I saw one of them bolt out towards my bike and was a little uneasy because I didn't want him to get hurt. I got close behind him and saw his curious little hands and big eyes looking at himself in the [dirty] chrome parts that are just the right height for him to see him self. Despite the 'don't touch the shiny parts, they are really hot and WILL hurt you' the boy looked at me and said he really liked it and asked if it was mine. I responded "thank you very much, and yes it is". I mentioned again that he needs to take a step back because it is hot and it will hurt him. Well, he asked some other questions about it (as a curious little 4 year old would do) and I started fishing around in my trunk to get my helmet and stuff out so I could take off while he was once again was drawn to the shiny parts. Despite the additional reminder of you can look but don't touch, he turned and looked at his mom then looked back at himself and with his little pointer finger very quickly poked at the image of him self in the side of the cover that encases the clutch basket (all of this was within a matter of seconds and I couldn't get to him in time to stop him). My bike had sat there for no more than 10 minutes after being ridden for probably about an hour. It wasn't really hot, but it was hot enough that he learned his lesson. He didn't cry but he wasn't happy about it either. Anyways, by this time the other one was out asking questions too. They both wanted to go for a ride, but settled for sitting on it. They got a kick out of that. In addition to sitting on it, I suggested that if one of them wanted to hear something cool, push this little black button... The air-horn blasted and boy that surprised them both (and the mother too). Anyways, the 10 or 15 minutes I spent answering their questions and letting them ooo and ahh, really reminded me of what it was like to be that age and be so excited to head to my grandparents house. I would always get a ride on my grandpa's wing when we went over there and I always remember how excited my grandpa was when I would ask him about his bike. These are not my kids, and I am a ways away from having kids but seeing how excited they were about my bike brought back some memories and I just thought I would share.
  18. Whose is going to the Hot Springs Rally?
  19. Curious What temp does the oil get on a air cooled V-twin ? How hot is too hot to run ? Brad
  20. Ran 20-50 dino oil in their older motor (79,000 plus) on a first gen. If you have what were the results? The weather is freakin hot down here, I don't think the 10-40 syn is cutting it.
  21. Man I heard it was hot in Texas but this??? Oh the travesty of it all!!!
  22. So trying to get some miles on the new bike to get the 600 mile oil drain in and it 106 out side can not ride long in them temps. Hope it cools down soon. it bad when your out on your bike and hope for rain.
  23. Had a day off today so I took the old girl out for a ride. Was out for about an hour riding along the coast of Palm Beach on A1A. It was a picture perfect day, blue skies, clear blue water along the beach. About thirty minutes into the ride I was practically soaked with sweat. I just don't recall it being so hot hear in south Florida. The winds were calm the seas were flat calm. Temperature was 93 humidity was also in the nineties. I really wanted to ride more but it was just too freaken hot!
  24. actually Naperville is where I'll be Friday around lunch time. Of course Chicago style pizza comes to mind, but what else would you consider that is only or the best is available in the Chicago area? Chicago style hot dogs has been suggested, too. I found Giordano's and Lou Malnati's pizza in Naperville rated very highly. Also Portillo's Hot Dogs looks promising. I'm getting really hungry now!!! Also, do you know a good pawn shop with lot's of guitars? Or a music store that has lot's of used equipment? I'm flying my 50 year old Fender Super Amp up there Friday to have it repaired and serviced at Victoria Amps. Brother gets me buddy passes, so flying it up there is not much more than shipping it and it can't get lost or destroyed! Should be a nice adventure. Thanks, James
  25. The wife and I on separate bikes did 1200+ miles round trip for Star Days this year. Our first Star Days and we had a great time. Lots of nice people, the event was well organized, although the banquet ran WAY long and we left early to get a good spot by the pool for late night talk. We did some exploring on Wednesday and went up Signal Mountain. All the fun roads of Lookout mountain without all the tourist traffic. Went up Route 8/127, and that was fun, but the GPS found what the locals call the "W's". Actually called W road. Look it up on Google. All the thrills of the Dragon without the crazy crotch rockets, but a lot shorter. Sticky Fingers BBQ got our vote for best food of the trip, the dry rub ribs were the best I have ever had. The Tennessee Railroad Museum was a fun time, the short train ride includes a lot of history and you can run around the train, hang out on the very back of the cars outside or stick your head out the window without getting yelled at! Just don't hang out too far through the tunnel, only 15" of clearance! Best $15 we spent on the vacation. Highly recommended. Others in our group enjoyed the aquarium, and several went to the actual Dragon. Only downside was it was HOT HOT HOT. but then it is the South in July, what do you expect? We found the locals to be helpful and friendly, and plan to visit Chattanooga again soon, maybe outside of the main tourist season and when it is cooler! Hope everyone made it there and back OK.
