  1. found fluid on floor under left fork, or anti-dive and can't tell which one it is coming from. There is a fluid trail down the fork, but the amount that is on the floor seems to be way too much to be from the fork. The diameter of the fluid on the floor is approx. 4"x6" and just showed up in a short period of time. Is there anything on the anti-dive unit that could possibly leak that much and if so is it brake fluid? I know this is vague and funky sounding but it's the only way I can explain it. Any help will be appreciated. Don H.
  2. I'm rebuilding a set of forks for the 89 VR. The online parts fiches are pretty sketchy on the slide bushing that goes on the inner fork tube. The one that presses into the outer tube is known as 3JJ-23125-00-00 METAL, SLIDE 1. Anyone have the part number for the other one? Thanks!
  3. How many members would be interested in doing another fork brace group buy for the 1stGens. If there's enough interest we could do it again.....
  4. during fork seal replacement.when you begin to reinstall all the tiny parts that go into the lower leg of the fork and onto the dampening rod, what is the secret to make sure all the little parts stay where they belong while trying to put the lower section on?

has anyone ordered fork seals from pyramid parts? Satisfied?
  6. I have an '83 standard. Lately, I have noticed alot of bouncing in the front end. I've only had the bike for around a month, and I didn't notice it at first. I do know that one fork seal is leaking some. I am running 14 pounds of air in the forks. It also takes a second or two to raise up after I lift the bike off of the sidestand. Fork rebuild is not an option at the moment, and I was wondering if I just drain the fork oil and change it out, if that will help for a while. Could the bouncing be from the forks being low on oil?
  7. Hi, I have two sets of forks for my 84 xvz12, both sets have progressive springs in them. One pair came with the bike at 20,000 miles and the other I bought on ebay because I couldn't get any life out of my fork seals on the originals. I surmised that rough spots on the forks were tearing up the seals even though I had done my best to smooth them out with judicious use of a fine stone and lots of oil. I wish I had tried replacing the bushings too but never did that. All in all I'd say that the ebay set are in better shape and do have new bushings, but the original set are not too bad except for the fork seal issue. With the original set the bike rides true and steady. With the replacement set, I get a wobble if I take my hands off the bars. No wobble is apparent till I take my hands off the bars and the bike rides well so long as there are hands on. I don't understand how substituting forks can cause this sort of thing. I don't have any fancy instrumentation to check but the troublesome forks don't look bent or deformed in any way and as I say they are in marginally better shape than the original pair of forks. Any one have any suggestions or insights into how to trouble shoot this ? Thanks, Brian H.
  8. Does anyone know if you need to use the impact wrench to retighten the allen bolts in the end of the fork tubes after seal replacement
  9. Can someone tell me the oil weight of automatic transmission fluid. I'd like to find something in the 10 wt. to put in my forks and try it out. I just got done putting 20 wt. in them a couple of weeks ago and they seem too harsh still. At 8.00 a pint for fork oil, I thought I would try the ATF and if it works to soften things up I'll go with the good stuff. If it doesn't I might have to go all the way down to a 5W oil. Louie
  10. I have completed putting in my new steering bearings. BUT no where in the service manual does it give the torque spec. for the fork brace all our 1st gens have. Torque spec. is typically the result of female metal strength, size and thread of bolt. LOOKING at the bolt. I think 14 ft/lbs would be about right. Anyone know the spec for sure? Oh, and I do have the super brace. But I know that does not alter the OEM correct torque setting.
  11. I was investigating how to bleed the brakes on my 83 and am completely confused. Everyone has mentioned that the rear brakes are bled at 3 places, yet if I follow the lines I can only find the lines to the rear and then to the front, Nothing else. At the foot pedal I see the master cyl, the resiovoir, then the lines split to the front and rear. Hard line to the front and a flexible to the rear. THEN I have this wierd thing on the front brakes. You have a caliper, then a second hose going to the front of the fork on each side that also has a bleeder and for the life of me has no function. Unless there is a way for fork compression to push on the brakes. Where is this mythical third bleeding point in the back brake system? Anyone have any details on the 83 bleeding proceedure? Thanks all! when I get some details and run through it, I'll take a bunch of photos and write up a how-to for dummies so nobody else has to stumble through this. Here's hoping I dont shatter the resoivoir when opening it.
  12. i wantting to order (new fork seals, rotors, and is there any other bike that uses the same breake calipers so i can stop better)
  13. So, I'm ready to instal my new progressive springs and I'm looking for opinions/facts about which type of fork oil should I use and why. Should I use regular fork oil, a synthetic blend, or a full synthetic? Advantages/disadvantages of each?
  14. When installing the new progressive springs at what point in the procedure does one refill the fork oil (13.5oz.) into each tube? I will be changing seals and all. Thanks
  15. What KInd of fork seals and dust caps does everybody use for replacements?
  16. Hey Duke, now where did you say the tail light bulb was? LOL I have over 40K on my 99 and there was very little grease left. BTW, anything special about fork oil? Might as well change that while I'm here. Thanks, Spotsy
  17. Id like to get in touch with someone here who actually replaced their bearings and races in the front fork. Its due for a repacking but I figure since the front end will be down I might as well go ahead and replace the bearings and races. A phone call will be better than going back and forth with e-mails, etc. Thanks....
  18. I'm placing an order at oldbikebarn and cant find the right progressive front spring number. anyone have the right number for the progressive front fork springs for a 83 venture?
  19. I plan on doing the front steering bearing. About 2 years ago the right front fork would not hold the 7 psi air pressure any longer. It would leak out within a day as I recall. I have not had any air in them since then. I checked the value, then replace itand sprayed soap all around and I could not detect any air leak. There's no oil around the fork seals however I'm not sure exactly how it is routed in the fork. Who's had their forks apart and where else could the air be leaking? I figured it would be worth asking before I got involved. Thanks. Spotsy
  20. Today I was taken apart the front forks on my 83 RSV to replace seals and springs. I was following steps I printed from this site. When it came time to remove hex bolts at the bottom of each fork I turned and turned and got nowhere. I looked down inside the fork from the top and had someone turn the bolt. I could see the inside of the fork tube turning with the bolt. It turned hard so my question is. If I use a impact gun will this get the bolts out? I have the use of an impact saturday but wanted to ask the question before I tried. I see in the pictures I printed out from this site that a impact was used. Just don't want to ruin anything....Thanks.
  21. I have the forks off a 82 XJ 650 & using a 8mm hex sosket on the bottom of the lower tube, and a 12mm hex socket with all my extentions down the upper tube, both seem to turn (spin) but will not loosen the dampning rod. Any ideas? Need to remove dampning rod to replace the fork seals. H E L P Thanks :canada:
  22. OK I admit I’m a bit lazy. The fork seals were replaced a few months ago including (I’m assuming) new oil, now I’m installing progressive springs. Do I need to drain the fork oil since it’s still almost new or can I just pull out the old springs and put in the new? Thanks, Al PS how do you get the old spring out, with a coat hanger or something?
  23. I've got an 83 royal that has the hydraulic dampers removed for better front brakes. I just acquired a 87 complete fork assembly. This is the triple trees down including wheel, calipers, rotors and the front master cylinder. Mechanically I'm sure I won't have much trouble changing one set for the other but my question is: How do I hook up the new electric dampers? I've read some back posts but they are not very clear on what needs to be done. Any one changed theirs over and has some tips? I would appreciate it. Also, will the new Progressive springs I just put into my original forks work in the new ones? Dick
  24. Hi everyone My 2004 RSV as 70,000 kms and I'm hearing the front end bang when I go over rough roads.I've tried adjusting the air pressure which hasn't helped. The front end isn't loose, no handling problem. I suspect the front fork oil is either gone or low. I haven't seen any leakage anywhere. So I thought I'd try draining and replacing the oil before getting too involved. So I'ved been able to find the the quantity of 0.553 L or 19.5 oz Imp., 18.7 oz us and weight -5W. for each fork tube, "Funny they sell it in 500ml or 1L size" The way of marketing. My question is the procedure ? I believe it to be a simply job, first remove the cap bolt with the air pressure valve. (both sides) next remove the bottom bolts allowing the oil to drain. Applying up & down pressure to the forks through the handle bars to push out any remaining oil in the forks. Replace the bottom bolts add correct volume of oil to each fork again apply up & down pressure to settle the oil, then replace Cap bolts to 17 ft-Ib torque. Buy following this procedure could I expect any problem I haven't taken into account. Any advise would be appreciated.
  25. A lot of years ago, I bought some chrome fork tube protectors for my '83. I thought they were made by RIVCO, but I see they don't list them on their site. Now I need another set--does anybody remember who makes (or made) them?
