  1. This one seems to be pretty good if you looking for facts on stuff.. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=population+of+texas
  2. Anybody have an extra cam cap laying around they don't need? I'm assuming all the caps are the same? I'm still collecting the few parts that got broken when one of my engines fell off my trailer and onto the pavement. Another member was already most helpful with valve covers and a side cover. I think all I need now is one cam cap. I'll find out if there's anything I'm forgetting this spring when I get ambitious enough to dig the engine out of my shed. It's the engine that came in my bike. I thought it was bad when I heard some strange noises coming out of it. It turned out to be the exhaust collector.
  3. Last night after reading the following post, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=44565 I clicked on the link in Black Owl's reply to a smiley icon web site. I know I shouldn't have. The following happened afterwords. My default search engine was replaced. Avast automatic update failed. Home page reassigned. I then ran Malwarebytes software and it located 295 instances of malware. 99% of these were tied to the now default search engine. I had just ran this malwarebytes software about 5 days earlier and it had then detected 17 various ad ware problems. This was at that point the first I had ran it in several months. I looked at Black Owl's posts and this link has only started showing up since the 17th of January 2010. Gary
  4. I am sure some one has seen this before and can point me in the right direction. I am at work now but I do have my tools with me. As I was riding to work this morning I noticed a Puff of steam from the left rear side of the engnine and upon looking down I noticed that I had some anti-freeze on the pipes ( silver slivers and specks on hot pipes.) it was not much but there. The puffs at first were intermitten as thoght something was starting and stopping the leak. Now I know there is a water line along the upper frame that I believe goes back to somewhere in the top end of the engine. I made it to work after stopping once to check and see if I could see any water leaking. Getting here I had a constant small amount of steam but never got any indicator lights that I was overheating. I removed the resivor cover and yes It was out of antifreeze. This same thing happened last year on the right side and I never found the leak and until now it has never appeared again. I refilled the resivor and the issue disappeared. I plan on removing the tank at lucch to see what I can find but does anyone have a idea where the issue comes from based on its apparent location on the L rear to center of the engine? Nothing shows up on the Right side of engine and all steam rose from left side of gas tank. Byt he way it is about 67 here so its not from the cold. IDeas??? jb may be walking home. Actually, I have Roadside assistance for towing but would like to fix it here at lunch if possible.
  5. After reading the excellent thread on this site on how to fix the flexing problems in the engine guards, I made the repairs yesterday. I did it as the thread said to, and without a glitch. I just can not believe that Yamaha does not know that this is a poor design and a real weak spot. God forbid anyone dropping their bike prior to doing the fix, I'm sure a lot of bodywork would have to be done. The hardest part of the entire job is taking off the floorboard mounts, they are torqued on and with blue locktite. The 1" 3 piece bar clamps were the most expensive items on the list, at $7.99 each from J&P Cycles. Part # 7000127 . Do yourself a big favor and make this fix, you will not believe how solid it makes the engine guards!
  6. Well, as of a few minutes ago, Jan is taking off to spend a little more than a week in the Big Apple! Last year work took by to NYC and Jan was able to go with me. We had a blast visiting sites, going to a play and seeing her brother and sister-in-law that live there. Jan managed to do a little shopping etc while I worked. For Christmas, Jan asked to go again and visit and hopes to be able to take in as many plays as she can. So now, what to do with myself. Maybe I'll get her engine guard installed on her sportster that she doesn't know about (the engine guard, not the sportster). Think, think, think..... Dave
  7. Does the venture 1300 have a vmax engine? need to settle a bet
  8. Does anyone have a dead TCI that they would donate to me. I will gladly pay shipping. I tried the diode repair to my TCI and I am uncertain of the results. I used too high a wattage solder iron to remove diodes and damaged the circuit board traces somewhat. I obtained a second one that was very corroded and tried the replacement of diodes again and they looked much better, but due to corrosion of unit I believe it is unserviceable. Any 83 to 89 units that are laying around would be appreciated. I will open any donated one up and see if the diode degradation was possibly the reason for the unit failure. I can get the replacement diodes for about $5.00 to try and repair. This is a somewhat difficult procedure to replace these diodes, but after 2 practice tries, I am getting better at it. I believe I can use a post 84 on my present 1200 engine. I have the correct vacuum line to use on the post 84 units. Also I am anticipating getting a 1300 engine in the next week or so. PM me if you can help !! Gary
  9. HI, I have a friend of mine who has a 1300 Venture Royal. He is having trouble with the bike. I have found a 1200 Venture for this man. Other then the engine is htere much diffenrence. Is the exhaust system the same on both bikes?
  10. Was wondering if any of you have this issue... I reviewed the site earlier this year as I wanted to get highway pegs. Lots of good talk on the Kuryakyn Longhorn footpegs, so I bought them. They work great, offer several foot positions and work well with the Yamaha air deflectors I added. Question is... if put good pressure on them (say... push myself back in the saddle) I can see/feel the engine guards flexing. As a result, I don't do that, however was wondering if others have the same issue? The engine guards seem to have a surprising amount of flex in them. I can get them to flex simply by grabbing on and pulling on them. I checked the bolts and they're tight. Just curious to others experiences. My RSTD was similiar. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Bob
  11. I'm searching for Yamaha engine breather covers....I know they were discontinued, but....someone may know where I could get these: STR-4NK27-15-01 and STR-4NK27-15-02 Any help would be great.....Beth says we need these accessories....and who the heck am I to argue? What a great gal!! Thanks for any help on this one! randy:hihi:
  12. Yesterday, while riding down the interstate, I started to pass a car, I hit the throttle, the engine roared, but nothing happend, for a few seconds. I didn't shift, just, came on the the thottle. any ideas, whats doing on?
  13. I have been researching fuel injection systems for a while now, and there is one thing I cannot figure out. Most aftermarket fuel injection systems such as MOTEC use a hall affect sensor with a toothed sprocket attached to the crank or cam shaft to monitor engine speed and position. I understand the logic for engine speed, as the teeth spinning by the sensor create a voltage proportional to the engine speed. To detect an initial engine position, the sprocket will have one or two teeth missing. How does the computer detect and determine that the missing teeth is a larger gap than all of the other gaps? Let's say you had a 60 tooth sprocket that is missing two teeth attached to a crankshaft spinning at 10,000rpm. The teeth will be spinning by the hall effect sensor with an AC voltage at 10,000Hz, and two teeth missing will create a zero voltage incident only 0.0002 seconds long. How does the computer notice this is different from the other pulses? I understand that with a 2MHz processor 200microseconds is a long time, but what does the computer logic look like?
  14. I know we have beat this horse to death, and I have always advocated Mobil 1 syn. Some background on where I am going with this, before I became a Nurse, i was the Public Works Director for Turner County, in Georgia. 10 years in that position and 15 years before that as the assitant director and the Shop forman. We used delo 400 15w40 in everything, the caterpilliar motorgraders have something incommon with our motorcycles, WET clutches that run in the engine oil. and at the time CAT recommended Delo 400 for the engine, transmission and every where else, on these machines. They still use it there now. We never had an oil related failure in any thing. We were running graders 20,000 hours before any internal engine work. Can not remember any clutch problems. Ok to the point, I walked into O'rielly's and bought oil for the cars, van, and was getting the oil for the venture, and noticed the Delo 400 was $12 for a gallon. the mobil one I use is $9 a quart. I decided to go home and compare the data on these two oils. Delo is rated for use in all engine applications Both are rated for wet clutch applications. The Delo has a higher bearing load than the mobil one. The best I could fine on the net, Mobil is a 300 hour oil. Delo is a 400 hour oil, The oil analysis we did at 250 hour oil changes on the cats always showed around 60 to 70% of the oil life used (that was at 250 hours) meaning the oil could have been run close to the 400 hour mark. (Caterpilliar recommends 250 hours oil changes) All that depends on how the engine is preforming, air filters, oil filters, temp and other factors. After looking at all of this, I found myself thinking, why am I paying $40 for an oil change when it could be $12 for the superior oil. I change every 5000 miles anyway, that is only about 100 hours on the oil. I many here run Rotella 15w40, which is simular to Delo 400, don't know what rotella hour rating is, but I put the Delo 400 in my RSV. Will post the results over time, I had very little chirp or whine with the mobil. Gregg
  15. I finally got my MC Cruiser magazine, (long story), and was anxious to read their 'Tourers Shootout' article. They had the HD Electra Glide Ultra Edition, Kaw Voyager, Venture & the Victory Vision for the comparisons. I was sad to see that the only thing that really impressed them about the Venture was the engine! Granted it is an old model, but I was pretty disappointed in their opinion of it. - (I wonder if I am just being defensive because I like it so much.) They rated the Victory as the highest, but I just couldn't get past the styling and the Air Cooled engine. I looked at the Voyager when it first arrived at the dealer, but wasn't too impressed with it for some reason. I really thought the Venture would score higher. Have any of you read the article? What did you think of it? craigr
  16. Veterans , Now that's a trike!!!! This is an awesome paint job of a tribute to Vietnam Veterans. The bike is a Boss Hoss, and the company that makes them uses Chevy 502 cu in Big Block engine. http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=5 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=6 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=7 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=8 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=9 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=11 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=12 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=13 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=14 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=15 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=17 http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26197098&folder=NewMail&partId=18
  17. I just bought a 2006 Venture so far I really like the bike. My concern is an engine noise at certain RPM when crusing--that is when I am not speeding up or slowing down. In 5th gear its about 65 MPH. The noise is also heard in othr gears at lower speeds but only when not speeding up or slowing down--just crusing along. My thinking is that it may be the timing chain. My bike has 26 M miles on it. This may be normal for the engine but since by other bike is a V Twin I am not sure what are the normal noises for this engine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Eagle77----new member
  18. I picked up a 1985 GS 450 for a really good price. Only problem is, most of the bike came in one of two boxes. The engine wasn't even in the frame. I have the engine back in, and the suspension back on, but I am having a hard time routing the wires properly through the frame. I have a wiring diagram, but not a routing diagram. If anyone out there has one of these bikes, I would really appreciate if you emailed me. I would like to get some digital photographs of the wire routing, so you would have to be ok with removing the seat and gas tank. If not, no biggie, it just will take longer to get it right. At this rate, I figure I will be done in time for snow to start sticking to the ground...
  19. Once again I have the reoccuring problem of the starter draggin. Now it's dragging so bad that it won't turn the engine over. sometimes it will catch and crank mostly it just sounds like it doesn't have enough power to turn the engine over. As indicated this is an reoccurring problem I went through this several months ago and thought I had it fixed by replaceing the bad under warrenty Odyssee battery. It worked great for a while then started acting up again and got progressively worse until now it just won't hardly crank. I've jumped out from hot battery to power lug on starter and it is doing the same thing. I've removed the starter and have taken it apart and cleaned it up and reinstalled. No Help. The battery wires have all been upgraded and have also added a second ground from engine ground point to frame. All the ground points are in good shape. I'm at the end of my rope. Does anyone have any suggestions.
  20. Any body ever mounted a Venture engine on one of those engine stands?? I've used them for big V8's before so I know the stand will handle the weight. What I'm wondering is will the V4 mounting holes withstand the torque??? Just looking for info from someone who's been there... Thanks.. I'm also on the hunt for an engine hoist. I'm getting too old to be lifting heavy stuff any longer. I'm finding I need to call someone to help with the lifting more and more often....
  21. So I have noticed a drop of oil under the bike since I got it. Today I changed the oil and filter and was checking things out closely and found that it is dripping from a tube that runs under the engine. A metal cross tube on the frame that has 2 flat bars with holes in them. Right behind that on the bottom of the engine there are some rubber tubes and the oil is dripping from one of them. I can not get a good enough look above that. I think the smell I am smelling is from oil getting on something hot. Anyone out there know where I'm talking about? I will try and get a picture of the area today and post it. There is only a drop or 2 after sitting a few days after a ride. But I think it maybe causing the smell I have. You can see the oil drip. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/VictoriaVett/CIMG1411.jpg
  22. Yesterday I had a female friend ask me what "size" the Venture was. I explained to her that it had a 1300cc engine. She said "Oh, that's small enough for me to handle". I told her that it was a VERY heavy bike. She then proceded to inform me that she had she motorcycle license and said "The weight doesn't matter, as long as it has a small engine, I can handle it". :bang head: I didn't even bother to waste my breath trying to explain the difference. Needless to say, she WILL NOT ride it. :no-no-no:
  23. Today after work, I stopped by one of the local salvage yards to see if they had a window roll up for Laura's van. I was told that now they have a new yard with Cash for clunkers vehicles in it and they should have plenty. I went in and saw at least 200+ vehicles and to be honest, it looked like a pretty nice car lot. In fact, there were a lot of cars and trucks that I would be proud to own. There was an 02 Burgundy Escalade in very nice shape, a two door Seville with a Northstar engine, several Blazer SUV's that looked almost new and on and on and on. It was absolutely unbelievable that many of these vehicles were not worth more than $4,500 for a straight trade-in or private sell. They are now selling parts off them, but no engine parts. But, with "disabled" written across the windshield, the engines are worthless, since they have been seized up. I know several people that are in great need of a decent vehicle and it is truly a shame at what has happened to these vehicles. Yeah, there are some that are truly clunkers, but many were really nice. RandyA
  24. I'm thinking about buying this engine but would like some input on the sound it's making. I know bikes don't sound right on a video but it's kinda got a knock (maybe) He starts it up toward the end of the video. Thanks for listening [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC8D9qUmxEg&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - 1988 VENTURE Royale 1300cc[/ame]
  25. Although this is my first post here, I have been able to find all the answers to my questions/problems over the last few months. However, I have a doozy. A couple of months ago I ended up pulling the engine out of my '89 VR because it had a bad head gasket. Eventually, I got everything back together and the engine back in the bike. Last week when I went to start it, something just didn't seem right. I thought I had air leaks around the manifolds. The o-rings were new but I pulled the manifolds off and put gasket sealer on them anyway. I still couldn't get any readings on the front carbs to synch them. It has spark and fuel, but very little, if any, dancing of the carb sliders. As it turns out, I have high pressure air coming out of both of the vacuum ports on the front head. My question is, are my front cams 180 out? I was careful with the timing marks when putting the cams back in. Or could it be something else? I certainly appreciate any advice given here. Steve
