  1. I'm happy Nov. 16,2009 8 point--green score about 135 inches Show us your deer pics from this year.
  2. I hit a deer tonight on my way to pick Ramona up from work. The good news is since my brakes are out I hit it with Ramona's truck. The bad news is I hit it with Ramona's truck. I just can't win.
  3. I found this site today on a light external vest that runs on rechargable AA's. It has a life for the lighting strips of 25,000 hours; don't know the price or what I am supposed to do with it after the 25,000 hours of riding, ... which will take only a year or two! LOL. Enjoy reading, and let me know what you think. IT IS NOT ESTETICLLY desirable, but riding in Denver or any other large city, ... it might save a life. DEER will not give a damn. Need that electric deer whistle that makes them mate while I ride buy! LOL. Jack Tharp Ft. Collins, Co AkA, ... JackZ
  4. I have just completed a trip from Chicago, IL to Orlando FL to visit my daughter turning 13 this month. During my trip down south, several thoughts crossed my mind and I am writing to inquire as to whether any of you have any specific answers for the following questions: 1) How "catastrophic" would it be to hit a deer bounding into your path single riding at say 85 mph? I saw many dead deer along the sides of the road near the Tennessee mountains outside of Chattanooga, and wondered if a biker would survive. 2) I was forced to ride in the evening on strange roads, through Georgia. I kept wondering what would happen if I ran over a good sized pot hole. Anybody ever do that? 3) How does a bike behave with a blow out? Front tire? Rear tire? Can a single rider have any warning to try to handle the forces?? 4) Generally, what speed is acceptable with decent tires in the rain? I had several cars and tractor-trailors rush by me, but it was night, and drizzeling for hours and hours down to Florida. I made it safe and sound, took it relatively easy, but sometimes when it got real dark, and visibility was poor, my mind played lots of tricks on me. I "trusted" the overall road condition, and the statistical improbability of hitting a deer, pot hole, etc. Thank you for your true to life experiences. Sunrayman
  5. It's that time of year again when those of us that are yearning for the hunt get that disorder that is commonly referred to as Buck Fever. Those of you not interested in hunting may not understand. But, being a life time hunter it hits me hard about the time I notice the leaves changing. This year one of our members and one of my newest bestest friends generously offered to let me hunt on his property which is located smack dab in the middle of prime Georgia deer and wild hog territory. The weekend before last I got a late start for the morning hunt to get to my spot and settled before sunrise. So, on the way to the stand I spooked the big boy as he was passing my stand on the way to breakfast. And as a result he blew and ran off and I blew my chance at bagging a big buck for a least that hunt on that day. So the next hunt day ended up being yesterday. And, I was pretty determined to get to my spot on time. Buuuuut, My house mate, sidekick and hunting companion, Chris (lovingly referred to as Miss Stumpy, sometimes Guney Bird) does not respond well to being aroused from her slumbers at 4:AM nor does she seem amused, pleased or motivated by my motivational and time management speech which pretty much consist of repeating over and over again....................... "Areba, areba...... on-delay, on-delay, on-delay......no time for that........don't stop now.......... we're burning daylight!!!!!! " I don't know why. So, to appease her so she would get in the car, and with alterior motives, :whistling:I offered to drive. Knowing full well that I would be able to make up some lost time while she slept in the passenger seat on the way. Time wise we were cutting it close and about three miles away from the property I was watching the first hint of daylight peeping over the horizon when in my peripheral vision I see a humongous buck (with a rack bigger than anything I have ever killed in a lifetime of hunting), leap through a hedgerow and over the fence alongside the road just in time to land on the hood of the car. Now I wasn't really watching the speedometer nor do I know exactly how fast the buck was moving through mid air but, I estimate the combined impact was somewhere around 100 MPH. As much as Chris hates to be woken up at 4:00 AM she really hates being woken up by the airbag smacking her in the face as it deployed. As much as I was hoping to kill a big buck yesterday morning this was not exactly what I had in mind, obviously. Understandably, she was quite upset, shaken up and scared :Bunny2:as we were on the side of the road, out in the middle of the country and out of cell phone range inspecting the damage to HER smashed up car. I was gonna try to put the dead humongous 8 point buck in the trunk but I couldn't lift it by myself and Chris wasn't interested in having anything else to do with that deer at that point in time. Being more concerned with her car than the dead deer, rightfully so. The damage to the car was pretty dramatic with a broken windshield, deployed passenger airbag, missing right front head light, crumpled hood and right front fender. But, fortunately the car was still drivable. The engine would run and it wasn't spewing radiator steam. So, we left the dead deer on the side of the road and rode on to the property. I couldn't blame Chris for not wanting to go hunting after all of that, but, since we were there I figured what the heck. Chris went back to sleep in the camper while I went hunting in time to miss a shot at a 300 pound wild hog. Later in the morning John, his son Jesse and I went back to the scene of the accident to retrieve the deer. But, to my disappointment someone had seen the humongous dead buck roadkill and had claimed it for their own trophy wall. Since Chris' car was close to the end of it's economic life. She had opted for liability and uninsured motorist insurance and passed on the comprehensive insurance coverage when time to renew her insurance policy. So, since the buck was an uninsured deer and not an uninsured motorist, Geico was not gonna be of much help. That being the case, first thing this morning, my son Clint and I were at Pull-A-Part junk yard in search of and pulling vintage Chevrolet parts. To my delight and surprise we found the hood, fender, headlight and airbag assembly all for less than $150.00. The two of us got out the tools and tore into the project like experienced and professional auto body shop mechanics.... which we're not. None the less, amazingly we got the unibody cross member perfectly straight by use of a logging chain, a gigantic pine tree and a quick joilt in reverse. By lunch time we were bolting on our new vintage Chevrolet parts. By dark we had the car back together as good as new..........almost. Except for the two tone paint job and the still cracked windshield. Since I know I'm gonna end up painting the car anyway I'm thinking ghost flames and maybe an airbrushed depiction of a dead Humongus eight point buck on the hood, or something else equally cool. I hadn't mentioned that part to Chris yet.
  6. I've decided to start deer hunting again after a 3 year layoff during which time I lost my lease rights to private land nearby. But I'm right on the edge of several large tracts of Federal and Georgia state public lands. Some open and some which require checkin/signin (wildlife management areas). Georgia offers a free hunting/fishing license to those over 65, and for those like myself in the over-60 group a $90 lifetime license which includes eveything hunting/fishing except Federal bird stamps. So I bought the over-60 lifetime license yesterday, and ordered a Barnett crossbow via the internet to use. I think my right arm is too weak to hold a bow for any length of time since I broke the arm & shoulder 3 years ago. Bow season starts Sept 12th, muzzle loader Oct-10, and firearms on Oct 16 - Jan 1. I'm thinking I want to buy a TC Contender .22rf pistol to squirrel hunt prior to deer hunting from the Suzuki trail bike I have , so I can get some early scouting in.
  7. Hey, Had a few deer start to come out in the past, but they always hesitated when they heard the loudness of my Fishtail Pipes. A few weeks back I took off my Fishtail Pipes and put back on the stock pipes, wife like's the quiteness, but now.... Yesturday, riding thru heavy wooded area close to road, had a deer jump right out in front of me, did not see it, luckily at an angle going away from me. Going about 65mpr, I immediatly hit full breaks, Rear first, then split second, front. Keept the Handlebars straight forward but the Rear End came sideways a little 6-8" to the right. Still was going about 25-35 I'm guessing when the deer passed by, I left off the breaks, But the bike was already doing a woble side to side, like when you pulled the string on a spinning top. Thought I was going to loose it, had bike's do a little woble before when hitting small animals, but nothing this bad. With that much of a woble side to side, Is this Normal??? Later-
  8. Will try my best to describe so you get a good picture in your mind... Last eve was on the way home at Sun Set and Peak Deer time. I had my XXL Clearview Windshield and my Clear Safety Glasses and my visor was full up. Had Mimi on the back too. North West Michigan rural Highway M-37. I was scanning left and right 10 to 12 seconds (Max headlight range) like a mad man. Seen 5 deer next too road (3 did not move, 1 went back to woods and 1 crossed 10 to 12 seconds in front). Then climbing a large and long hill I was 10 seconds behind a Toyota ForeRunner he was using High Beams and I was in the left 1/3 of my lane (near the yellow line) using Low Beam. Me and the Forerunner had been like this for the last 15 or 20 miles (best for the situation). Mimi and I have a "Deer Spotting Contest" DEER Right, Deer or Left Deer Front commands through our intercom. OK back to the large and long hill. There is a campground at bottom of hill on leftside and over the hill about 2 miles is a Party Store / Gas Station. Just as we got to the top of the hill I say "Deer Left" in the next 1 to 3 seconds I realize there are 4 "DEER EYES" bobbing up and down.... Wrong... I then recognize them 'bobbing deer eyes" as Bicycle Pedal Reflectors from two bicycles. They were on the farthest left shoulder of the road going head on to on coming traffic (good), but then I see them weaving badly into the oncoming lane maybe 1/3 into that lane. Remembering when I was a kid peddling to the top of a big and long hill I was tired, out of breath and wobbly too... OK so far recognized and analyzed the situation at hand... Then headlights started from the other side of the hill (Thinking to myself they better get that wobbling under control soon).... Just as the Toyota Forerunner in front of me passed them one of the kids decided he was going to avoid the oncoming car in his lane by cutting across the street (now 5 to 6 seconds out)!!! I PRESSED Hard Right to get too the White Line and the kid is still coming across his front tire is now at the double yellow line. By time I get TUNNEL VISION and ON THE WHITE LINE and steady I started emergency braking procedure (My arms strained as me and now Mimi full weight was upon the handle bars). Realizing I was fully upright and not skidding when I was braking and under control I then forceably broke eye contact with white line to see where the Bicycle was now? In the corner of my left eye I see his Back Tire breaking the reflective double yellow lines and briefly seen his handle bars cranked hard left about 18 to 24" off my left handle bar!!! WE MADE IT. 1. Thank God 2. Thanks to my MSF.Org Training Classes (Basic and Advanced 2008). 3. Lucky
  9. We hit a small nub buck last night about 6 miles from home. We're pretty much fine, just a few scrapes and bruises. Hoping that's all it is. I road the bike home from the towing company this morning. Seems to handle ok, so I hope it's mostly cosmetical stuff. But it looks like a lot of cosmetical stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets totalled out. Front fairing, windshield, fairing mounts tweaked, blinker mounts tweaked, lower left fairing broken, chrome grill dented, gas tank has 3 dents, both left crash bars bent and worn through(what a spark show as we slid down the road on it though), left saddle bag broken, trunk lid scraped, speaker housing scraped, antenna scraped, handle bars bent, mirror scraped. Probably a few more things we've missed. Oh ya, when we went to the crash site this morning, the first thing I picked up was the deer whistles. Guess those didn't help much. Later, Scooter Bob and Karen PS, for some reason the pic of the deer wouldn't load, but he was dead instantly.
  10. growing up rural in the midwest i didn,t start thinking about deer until the fall when it was time to break out the orange and sight in the rifle. springtime was just not when i looked for deer. however, now that i,m on the road for a living i tend to see a lot more than most people. since the snow has melted i have been seeing more on the roads than i can remember. last night a suv passed me and before he could move back to the right lane a doe ran in front of him and took out his left side. allrighty, an insurance claim for an expedition but if it was a bike? just saying, be careful, be aware, the deer are still here. al
  11. I seen in one of the motor bike cataloges a deer whistle you hard wire in so it makes the sound all the time when running, does anyone have one of these or know if they work?? Thanks:rudolf:
  12. Well, after months of healing, (crashed Sept. 22, deer came out bout 11PM, missed deer, back brake locked, got sideways, and down we go. Seven ribs, collar bone, and sore shoulder). The insurance company wanted to total, but I thought I could fix her back up. (04 midnight, 23,000 miles). Just plastic, and front and rear guards right side. Had most of parts off once already, soooo. Well a letter from insurance company they will only put libility, sooo, damm it come get it!!!!!!! Fever hit once it left the driveway. Lots of looking, even on our classified ads, but none were real close, and there is still ice and snow in northern minnesota!!!! Any way buddy told me to call a dealer 150 miles away. Had a new 08, silver and charcoal. $13,000 plus tax and license. No miles 5 year warranty. And the chance to accessorise again!!! Used to drive fast and take chances!!!!!!!! Now I guess it's time to grow up and almost act my age, don't heal like I used too!!!!!!!!! Take care and happy motoring!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Was following the school bus in this morning - a deer waited for it to pass and then walked right in between it and me. Fortunately I was only going about 35 or 40 and got shut down. Could have reached out and touched her but on my way by. Was watching the school bus more than the side of the road cause it usually has a stop just a little bit further ahead. I did notice I still need to practice being a little more aggressive on that front brake and a little less on the back.
  14. hhhhmmmm Deerduck or Duckdeer
  15. Can't be long now, that the deer are walking around.
  16. Was trying to post an e-mail about deer "hunting" on the german Autobahn but don't know how to include the e-mail in the post. You guys want to see how it's done let me know whom i send this to that can post it or teach me :-) Barend
  17. I always thought you were supposed to wait at least 15 min. after shooting a deer, and have your gun ready just in case. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/odd_deer_attacks_hunter New show..."When Good Deer Go Bad" or "Here's Your Sign?":big-grin-emoticon:
  18. Tonight I'm off to camp for a week of deer season and vacation. I got my Guns,Ammo, Atv's, and the Dog. Oh yea Mamamo is coming to I hope she brings some grub. I got satellite tv, cell phones service, plenty of wood cut for the new stove. 5 to 10 head of deer feeding on the place. Wvu football playing on the tube Saturday but wife says I need to attend my daughters wedding. Oh well still a good week coming.:dancefool:
  19. Being an avid deer hunter i was thinking about useing a soft tanned deer hide and was wondering if this would work as well as using a sheepskin. I have a friend who will tan the hide for me for free ( Trade out for some meat) just not sure how this would hold up.. No that holding up is a problem per say, I can always have another made.. I guess the main question is will it work as well as the sheepskn. I just think it would give a col look to the bike. david
  20. This time it's me. My passenger wife and I whacked a deer broadside at 55mph on Tuesday eve. My wife walked away and I got hauled in the ambulance on a backboard. A little roadrash on my hands and arms. Textile is NOT as good as leather. Helmets DO work. The worst of my injuries is that my back is sprained. CT scan showed no new injuries, just aggrivated old injuries. I firmly believe that the bike saved our lives. The rails did their job. We didn't get trapped on the bike. The deer sort of exploded. -- Rick
  21. Am I the only one get the Itch for 9/10/2008 to get here. It is a hard wait now knowing I get to see people I really like spending time with, good food, good riding and seeing deer in the back yard. It seem like it is never going to get here. See everyone there and hope to meet new rides also. ride safe. :clap2:
  22. This true story woke me up in a hurry the other night. (not that I was sleepy but geesus!!) I was riding down the back road late one night behind our air base, and after a quick scan to the front I glanced over to the left side to see if anything was flying etc.. whew I looked out to the front again, I noticed a golden glow to my right side.. eh?? What's that then? A freaking deer was running alongside the bike on the shoulder, holding speed with me and not looking overly stressed out or anything.. I'm not sure how long we were running alongside each other like that but I suddenly woke up realizing that this animal could veer to the left, cut across and we'd both be arse over tea kettle.. So I don't know why I did it, but I reach out with my right foot and gently pushed the deer into the ditch where it then ran off into the woods lol.. Give me a break.. I slowed the bike down so I could pull over for a stop and a car pulled up beside me.. three people rolled out of the car, laughing so hard they could barely walk, clutching their sides and doing the "I can't hold it in" walk.. Apparently from behind, the whole scene was ridiculously funny.. they said they saw the deer jump out of the ditch as I went by and saw the car so tried to run up the road instead of across it.. (where the fences are) but because I was slowing down to look to the left the deer caught up to me and most likely found itself between a rock and a hard place.. But it was the gentle nudge into the woods that they found the funniest... And how was YOUR ride last night?!?!

    Deer

Food for thought; there are a lot of deer on the road this year here in central Ky. I don't know how many deer hunters we have on here, but anyone who has interest in this sport could also help manage the population. We as humans have built their habitat out of existence, and they have to eat, so they go to road sides, gardens, etc. They are also an excellent food source when prepared right, and cannot be distinguished from beef. We all need to do our part, this could have impact on safety, insurance rates, and other areas. I understand that hunting is not for everyone, but we are losing hunters at an alarming rate, because kids are not being exposed to it. It is a proven fact that kids involved in outdoor activities do better in school, and stay out of trouble more. just something to consider and reflect on

    this was close

monday night comming home from work, was around 10 pm, and was dark out, i was following this car about 75-80 yards behind him, just so that i could also use his lights to my advantage, and all of a sudden the driver of the car tapped his brakes as if to knock the cruise off the car, and then suddenly hit the breaks solid, well there was 3 deer infrount of us standing on the hi way, well we had both locked up pretty snug, cause all i had heard was the sreatching of tires for both him and me, and i had just moved over into the hammer lane, as he was moving over to the roads right sholder, we both came to a complete stop abreast with each other, with the 3rd deer standing infrount and inbetween us, i guess the good part was i had just pulled the old xs1100 out of the corner of the quanset, and thought that she needed a few miles put on her this summer also, so that is the second time that bike has had a close ecounter with deer, where we had to have a complete stop. the one thing with that bike when you hit the rear binders with it it will grab solid.. looking at that thing, i guess my gaurden angles not only fly's fast but can stop quick too....
  25. Rode with a few other couples Sat to J & P Cycle's open house in Anamosa. About 50 miles into the ride we were going around a bend in the road and all we both saw was brown hair and then bang, bang, bang....The deer had to have made one leap from the other side of the ditch right into the left side of our fairing. All I can say is my husband is one heck of a good driver. We skidded into the other lane, onto the gravel shoulder the whole bike is swerving and he held onto it. I can't believe we didn't hit the ditch or lay the bike down. Cut in the front tire from the fender bending down, headlights sitting crooked and a few more dings. We're hoping the forks are ok.I don't think he was going over 45 mph when it happened. I can't belive how lucky we were. Kept on going down to the open house, but between the crowd down there, high winds and rain the whole way home...It was one of those days when we should have just hung it up for the day. No one hurt except his ankle which he drug on the road. A few Harley Riders from our hometown heard about it and everyone of them told Gary."It's lucky you had the Venture...cuz if it would have been an HD it would have never held up to that kind of force hitting it" Hope that's the first and last time we ever hit a deer!
