  1. I have a 1986 venture, my brother just bought a 1996 royal star, my venture is so much smother than the royal star i cant beleave it, could the carbs being out of sink cause it to vibrate more, the motor vibrates trough the floor boards, only has 29,000 miles on it, it just dont feal right, i would not think there would be that much deference between the two, wont be abel to sink his carbs for couple of weeks untill i get up to his house, he is about 120 miles away from me, just wondered if any one has any toughts on this.
  2. Re jetting carbs. In the tech libary the main jets in carb 1 & 2 are different in 3 & 4. The pilot jets it just says to go from jetr 15 to 17.5. The question is are all the pilot jets in the carbs stock with #15 jets or they different, too.
  3. First I would like to thank the guy who asked if I had the lower cowlings off. I synced the carbs last night, rode today no better. On the test ride held my hand over left air box opening bike immediatly ran better. Came home took two shop rags folded in half and taped over front of air boxes one each side. Bike now runs great. Either forcing to much air or creating a vacuum and starving the carbs of air.
  4. Hello, I have an 85 Venture Royale I picked up in pieces. Unfortunately the previous owner was nice enough to drop the carburetors off to get repaired and they were completely disassembled (a few torn diaphragms) and cleaned. Unfortunately, they were never reassembled and the gaskets inside the fuel bowl were removed and the fuel bowl o-rings were trashed. The bodies of the carbs look great! They also look like a crazy jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing. By the time i buy new diaphragms and gaskets think it may be cheaper to get a set off EBay roughly $300.00 for a used set. However they are mostly second Gen 1300cc carbs. Question 1: Did they change the bore size of the carb along with the displacement or did they just re-jet the carb? Question 2: Can you swap the carbs from the later years to earlier Question 3: Anybody just have a set of carb for a 1st Gen for sale, or maybe know a guy? Thanks in advance -Ben
  5. Ok guys this is like almost a dream come true. I am parting out a 84' wrecked Venture. It was wrecked at 1,032 miles and has never seen the sun since. I bought it at estate auction and the brother told me it has been in the garage ever since the wreck. Like I said "almost a dream come true" it has already partially been dismantled over time some pcs have been lost. If interested in anything from this bike ( Carbs and Engine SOLD) please feel free to send me a PM message and your offer. I can send pictures:thumbsup2: Thanks Gannon
  6. Anyone have one near Atlanta? I am in gainesville and would like to sync my carbs. Not to mention getting to meet other members would be cool too! Thanks.
  7. Awhile back I ran into trouble by opening up the airboxs on my RSTD and I ended up putting it back to stock because there wasnt enough vacuum to work the diaphrams correctly. Last night I had the "bright Idea" to relocate the vacuum for the diaphrams out of the air box and into the rubber tubes leading to the plenum..... WOW was that a mistake. Now it seems I have TOO MUCH vacuum and the carbs dump to fast and cause the bike to bog really bad. SO it looks like back to stock once again.... theres got to be away to increase airflow while keeping the carbs working right. Anyone have any ideas (other than leave it the hell alone LOL)?
  8. Ok folks this is my first "official post" and I am new to the VR so I hope my question isn't too far in left field. Keep in mind I am a child of the fuel injection generation so carbs are a balck art to me. I can tune the pants of a fuel injected vehicle, case in point my 500 HP Vette, but carbs befuddle me. So my question: Recently I put some holes ( about 8 x 3/8 inch) in the stock air box and noticed a little improvement. Last weekend I decided I needed a little more agressive sound so I cut-off the end of the muffler and removed the end baffle. The inner baffle is still intact and I love the new sound. So is it possible with some loss of restriction on the airbox and muffler side that I need to put bigger jets in the carbs? The bike is purring like a kitten when cruising down the road, no pops or back fires and much better acceleration but I also want it to last and really don't want to melt down valves or pistons due to an over lean condition. My first Touring bike and I love it. Thanks
  9. After being fed up with carb issues and running on 3 for awhile, I finally got another set of carbs from a member who was parting out and had redone carbs. I installed carbs and it was great to run on all four again. Seemed to stumble a bit at low RPM so I put the sync to it and got it all staighted out. Ran great for about 50 miles, then started running like crap. Seems to fall on it's face and die when you give it gas. Runs great at 5k-7k rpm.. The diaphrams and slides are all in great shape. Fuel filter is new, idles great. No air leaks I can find. Any ideas O' Venture guru's? A BMW 1200 LT is looking appealing right now, but I still love the 1st gen look and power (when it runs right).
  10. I have a first gen 83xvz1200 if I pull off the fuel line at the carbs I can see fuel pumping out but thats it just by turning the key it happens. If I put a little gas in the carbs then start it it runs till the fuel i poured in burns off. If I pour gas in carbs and leave the fuel line off while the engine burns off the fuel I poured I don't see any fuel coming out the fuel line from the fuel pump. Have no idea what to do. Seems it's not getting fuel somehow!! Thanks, Chop
  11. Ok all, I need your help. I'm looking for every possible failure mode that would cause fuel to leak out of the overflow on the carbs. After rebuild install, carbs were leaking out of number 1. Then taking it off and checking everything out we put it back together. Number 1 no longer leaked but no. 3 & 4 did. Very frustrating. It appeared to happen after some problems with the throttle cable, where we removed the carbs again and turned them upside down to keep the cable attached to the carbs. Not sure that putting them upside caused it but the timing is there. Background; 1987 Royale, 8900 miles. Carbs were rebuilt by a trusted V-max guy. The bike has been synced and runs great except for the gas leak. The tank has been lined (Red) new fuel filter, new air filter, new spark plugs. The carbs didn't originally leak when first installed. So looking for input on all possible causes of the leak. Also, would carbs leak more or less during regular idle? Thanks in advance, Bill
  12. well after 1 1/2 yrs i got the 86 i bought stripped down for a frame swap and re-paint. with help from the brother of a co-worker who want to learn about working on bikes, we got it down to the engine ready to remove from frame. alread found several problems as we took things off. the whole area below battery box is corruded up from acid, need to clean and re paint computer mount, clean and coat wiring blocks with electric gel. found diaphrams in carbs stiff and holes in them, need to order new ones. linkage set-screw between 2 of the carbs was loose and not opening the carbs at the same rate, could have never got them synced right. other than that it's in pretty good shape over-all. i'll have a few spare parts left over, because he gave me 2 extra fake gas tank covers, 1 radio and some other parts i need to find out what there for. the seat is in bad shape as the cover is cracked-up, if anybody has a good one or know where i can get this one re-covered that would work. i'm going to take it to a guy who did some other work for me and see if he can do it reasonable. looking foward to getting it back together and see how it turns out.
  13. After putting the carbs back on in the process of rebuilding after the second gear repair, a couple of them are leaking slightly out of the drain hoses. The drain screws are fairly tight (don't want to over tighten). Any tips/thoughts on how to stop the drips? Amazing how a little gas can stink out the whole garage... driving the Mrs nuts. Other than the leaking carbs, so far no other leaks that I can see ... fingers crossed. TIA
  14. Used my carbtune for the first time. 1 & 2 carbs were slightly off. 3 & 4 were even, but there was about 3 difference between the left and right side. Got them adjusted so there all within 1. I noticed there was a lot of bounce on the needles of 1 & 2. 3 & 4 were very steady. Is there something I can do reduce the bounce? Anyone else have this problem? I never thought of changing sides to see if it was the carbs or the guage, until just now. In the carbtune manual it said some adjust the carbs at a high idle. Wondering what most do when syncing?
  15. I have a first gen and it won't stay running. If I put a few drops of gas in carbs and it will burn that off and wont stay running. I have ordered a fuel pump off ebay. It's like the fuel is getting cut off before it reaches the carbs. I pulled the fuel line off at the carb and turned the key and fuel is pumping but when it starts it quickly dies after the drops pf gas that i put in carbs burns off. uggg very fustrated
  16. 83 Venture, Cylinders #2 and #4 dead and cold to touch, even after ride. Verified good spark. Plugs come out very wet. Suspected very rich flooding cylinder preventing fire. Float fuel levels verified good. Sync perfect. MPG=25-28:(. 1/2 tank strong seafoam run thru. Carbs rebuilt by me but can't confirm I did not do something wrong. Installed skydoc17 needle shim mod. Today confirmed carbs #2 and #4 only, dumping too much fuel. At idle, placed tip of shop towel into throat against main fuel needle for just a second. Towel tip comes out wet in carbs #2 and #4 and dry in #1 and #3. Thought I could see fuel coming from jet and along needle, and confirmed with above towel method. Now I am 99.9% positive excessive fuel is preventing cylinder #2 and #4 to fire. Fuel float levels are correct, but during operation carbs dumps too much fuel out the main fuel jet, even during idle when main jet should be completely closed off. 1. What could cause this? 2. What to inspect? 3. How to repair? 4. How to pretest after repair on the bench? pics not very good but first Pic, tip of towel in throat second pic tip wet
  17. Everyone, first I'm new to the forum! I just bought a 96 Royal Star a few months back. I have loved the bike, but have one problem that has come up. The needle in the carbs were sticking and I was losing fuel so I gave them a good seafoam bath (thanks for everyone that posted this tip in previous posts). That stopped the leak, but now the engine seems to be lugging, it is especially noticeable in 4th and 5th gears, is there anything that I should try. I did replace the spark plugs about three days before the carbs decided to gum up. Thanks for all of the help!
  18. I ordered Morgan Carb Tune (Thanks to Sky Doc), I had my Yankee buddy sync my carbs back in October and they need it again. I didn't have the nerve to ask him to come to Zebulon, NC (he lives in Pa.) to sync the carbs again so I called him, found out what kind he had and ordered them. When they come in I'll read the instructions, sync the carbs and hang out my mechanics sign. I alredy have a jack and Carbon Ones adaptor for the jack; what else does someone need?
  19. Hi folks ,I have a question,my 1990 venture 1300 has carb problems,as they seem to be running very rich, I am having a lot of problems with plug fouling, and terrible fuel mileage, also at times one or two of the carbs will start puking fuel out of the overflow tubes ,telling me that the floats are stuck or there may be trash in the system. Should I go to the trouble of pulling the carbs(ugh) or trying to clean the system with chemical treatments ie seafoam, the bike also seems to bog down at high rpms...HELP!!! THANKS, Ben.
  20. I swapped a set of carbs on my 96 RSTC today and the bike runs good but it seems to me that it sounds quite a bit different. Is this possible or am I imagining things? I believe that the carbs came off a 97.
  21. Can anyone tell me what a Venture motor weighs without the carbs. I need to get one shipped and I am trying to get estimates and need a good weight. I know one person can pick it up, but I havent done it so I have no idea.
  22. next week I get my carbs rebuilt and back tire put on.... then do regular fluid maintenance, rerun a few wires for brakes and turn signals, then at least I can ride a little... then next month I will get my new progress fork springs. I will also get new brake pads next week. This bike sat up for 7 years in a barn before I got it so I didnt really expect the carbs to come clean but was sure hoping so... at least this way I know they will be all they can be. In the mean time my honda v65 sabre will be getting a new fairing. I found an orignal hondaline fairing that orignally came on a sabre my same color. Cant wait for all of it to come together.
  23. I got a little free time so far in the morning. Anybody know a easy way to line that air box up when you get the horns that sit on the carbs out of whack?? I've aleays had a hard time with those things anyway. Maybe take all 4 boots or horns whatever you call them out of the box put them on carbs and then mount box to them? I just don't want to waste all the free time I have in the morning fighting it. Could get some more of it togather. I have someone to watch Warden in the morning. Not going to chance leaving her by herself without a watch dog!! I will only be outside but I know her. Those Air Boxes always give me fits. Got to be a easy way. I'll be on it as soon as it gets light enough to see down in there.
  24. I recently purchased an 83 Yamaha Venture 1200. There were some minor issues to take care before riding, such as the slave cylinder was frozen, and the carbs were completely dirty. This bike sat for about a year, indoors. So my pops and I pulled the carbs off the bike and soaked each one for 24 hours in 2 different cleaners. We reassembled the carbs and reinstalled them back onto the bike. At first, I was getting a bit of popping and cracking coming up through the carbs into the air filter compartment. After riding it for a day or 2 and blowing out the carbs, the popping and cracking settled to just every once in awhile. So that part is taken care of for now. Another issue I am having is the onbaord computer is acting funny. The fuel guage goes up and down and sometimes shows empty with a full tank. The oil light comes on throwing a warning, and even the temperature guage is throwing a warning. All of this is intermintent and comes and goes. I know it has to be a wiring issues. However ... we did not mess with any of the wiring during our work on the carbs. All we did was unplug the battery cables at the battery terminals. Does anyone know what could be causing this malfunction of the onboard computer, to make it act goofy and throw warnings. Like I said ... it only does it every once in awhile. I would appreciate any real advise on this issue. Thanks JTJones
  25. Not even sure where to start on this one... For some background, I ran the bike completely out of gas about 3 weeks ago... not far from home, so I was moving again in minutes. Anyways, since then I have been plagued with a sticking float or floats. We went to Marcarl's M&E a couple of weeks ago, and part-way thru the afternoon ride, I could smell gas (gasoline, that is...) and the engine was bogging. When the group stopped at a Tim Horton's for a break, there was certainly fuel coming through the overflow hoses to just in front of the rear wheel. I limped it home, saw that Carbs #1 and #4 were pouring fuel out of the overflows after I pulled the airbox off. I shut the fuel off at the tank and let the carbs empty themselves as I did a light drum solo on each carb body. I turned the fuel back on, hit the key, and after a few clicks, the fuel pump shut off with nothing out of the overflows. Good... problem solved. The next morning, I rode about 40-45 miles to Waterloo to pick up some friends on their bike, and escort them back to our place. My machine ran great. However, on the return trip to take them home, at least one float stuck again... same old issue : gas out the overflow tubes, and engine flooding. Got home. Emptied the carb bowls again, then let the pump suck straight Seafoam into the bowls. I let it sit overnight. Checked the next morning, and when I hit the key.. one click from the fuel pump.. no more. Good. That fixed it. Rode 2 days later... guess what ? Stuck float. Gas. Overflow. Expletives from me, disapproving eyerolls from wife. Redo Seafoam treatment. Let it sit 2 days. Fuel pump shuts off as it should. No fuel dripping anywhere. But, I ride for an hour. Smell gas. Engine bogging. Four letter words in abundance. Call Carl and reserve a space in his gorgeous shop last Monday. Bring my spare rack of carbs with me, figuring I can replace a bad float or floats, valves, etc. Remove carbs, finally get backs off of bowls - they are whistle clean inside. Valves certainly do not look damaged. Check the bouyancy of the floats.. all is well. Spray the seats of the valves liberally with carb cleaner, reassemble. All works as it should... the bowls fill, then the fuel pump shuts off. No overflowing fuel. Do little happy dance. Change plugs as the old ones have seen a lot of Seafoam and excess fuel. Seems to be running the way it should. Go for a ride tonight - and I don't even have to tell you to guess... I smell gas as I slow to a stop about 30 miles into my ride. Arrrrgh... One of Carl's (1 Gen's answer to Yoda) thoughts on Monday was that it could be the fuel supply line from the pump gradually disintegrating.. allowing little pieces of former hose to clog the float valves. It certainly could be... but why always carbs #1 and #4 ? The are diagonally opposite each other. I should be able to replace the fuel line tomorrow.. that is an easy thing to try and not expensive. However, before I run completely out of curse words, anyone else have any other thoughts if this repeats itself again ?
