    Bushtec trailer?

take a look at this - 83 with what looks to be a bushtec trailer - might be worth purchasing the bike to get the trailer! may need to cut and paste the address: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-XVZ1200-with-custom-trailer_W0QQitemZ320161669500QQihZ011QQcategoryZ6718QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  2. Well this has been going on for a month or so. My onboard computer that shows the checklist when you start the bike up goes on and off on me when am I am riding which causes the bike not to show the temp guage,if it's charging, how much gas,no blinkers,no brake lights, and no dash lights. It has never done this before and the only thing we did is Dana resodered the indicator module for the cold broken soder spots. Deacon Dan has the same 86 venture as mine and his has the same problem his checklist comes up but not all the time his also goes on and off. To add more his fuse box is real hot to the touch. I got the spare module from Dana and put it on mine and it never cut off but it gave a false reading on the gas amount and the gas picture would stay up. I just think it's wierd that the 2 bikes have the same problem. Oh yeah then I put the one that we got from Dana that I had put in my bike to test and it had the same problem it had in mine false gas reading and gas light staying on. Also the computer would come on and go through the check list but would come off and on when it felt like it. So does anyone know or have an idea whats going on with 2 bikes having the same issues to the panel cutting on and off for no apparent reason? Myself,Dana and Deacon Dan are lost we think it might be the control module not sure whats it is called but does the checkup on the items when you turn the bike on. I was thinking that might be it but why does both cut off and on for no reason. Any ideas or if you selling a comp module well 2 of them let me know. Meatloaf:sick:
  3. Greetings, I'm looking for some feedback on what is "normal" front brake performance for a Gen1. My issue is that the handle has what I would describe as "excessive" travel and the brakes just don't seam to bit very well. The handle does not have excessive free play and I can feel the brakes start to engage as I would expect but they take a lot of handle travel and pressure to get it stopped, even at slower speeds. I have completely rebuilt the hydraulics (no pitting in the bores noted, just hard seals etc) but am still not satisfied with the performance. The system has been bleed several times manually and with an air powered vacuum bleeder so I'm confident it is not air in the system. I did not replace the pads as they appeared to be new but do not know what brand/type they are. As a former Mercedes/BMW cage tech (till my hands gave out) I'm confident that the work was done correctly. I realize that the front brake only operates the one caliper but still I expected more. My last big bike was an 03 BMW GS 1150 Adv and my current other bike is an 82 SECA 400 so I realize that I'm comparing apples and oranges but it just doesn't feel right. I've never ridden any other Ventures but have several Gold Barges and they were much better then mine. I've searched around the forum but have not been able to find anything related to what I'm experiencing. Is it possible that the hoses are swelling and causing the soft handle and poor performance? Can the "anti-dive" actuator be affecting it? Does anyone have experience with the steel braided lines on a Gen1? The only place I've found them they want almost $400 for a full set and I'm not ready to "invest" that much in this bike (yet). My "gut" is telling me it is the hoses and pads but want others feed back before I throw any parts at it. Sorry this is so long but wanted to get as much information captured as possible. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bill Colbert,WA
  4. Saw Bud (Circuit Rider) at our swap meet today. As you may recall he sold his RSV and bought a new Goldwing and had a Hannington sidecar put on it. It's an orange bike with the side hack painted to match. It is one Gorgeous bike, very sweet. Wish I had had a camera to take some pictures. Jerry
  5. The wife and I did a charity ride last week. Lots of bikes and people. So we are ridin with a group and come to a stop sign. I stop and proceed when a guy behind me decides he's gonna try and pass me up. Im in second gear and i hear his metric vtwin creepin up next to me. I figure i will give my bike a good run and see if i can keep up with this guy. I twist the throttle and my wife grabs the back of my jacket. Off we go and we are both turnin and burnin. It was kind of close there for a bit but i was surprized that i was actually keeping up and pulling ahead slowly. At 7k i shifted to 3rd and then the distance between us started to get large. I could hear his bike rappin out as he shifted gears but it seemed like he just ran out of throttle. I was a little self conscious about riding an older bike amongst all the newer bikes but i do like this bike. After keeping up with the pack and holding my position, I like it even better. I had no idea this bike could hold its own up to newer bikes. A few people checked out my bike during a break. They thought it was a Goldwing til they saw the Yamaha on the back. Yamaha should have promoted this bike a little harder and longer. I saw a few Ventures and talked to a few people who were riding them. Even saw an 83 with a sidecar.
  6. Ok, I got my new Avons on the bike... should I run max air pressure in them?? about 60% of my riding is 1 up.. Thanks
  7. I Will Tell You After Owning 85 Venture And 2001 Springer Harley That After One Week Of Owning 2000 Mm Model Was Ready To Sell. I Have Corrected Riding Position On This Beast To Make Me Feel Confident In Riding This Bike And Maybe Giving Up My 85. I Have Tinnitus ( Ringing In Ears) And This Bike With 1/2 Helmet And The Motor Whine It Produces Almost Made Me Get Rid Of It. I Used A 3/4 Helmet And It Really Reduced Whine Noise I Hear With 1/2 Helmet. The Other Thing I Did To Make This Beast Not Feel So Heavy On My Skinny Arms Is Take Handle Bars Off And Press Them Wider. Went From 32" To 34 1/2" Wide And What A Difference In The Feel Of This Bike For My Long Arms. When I Purchased This Bike Compared To 85 And Harley Is That My Arms Felt Like They Were In Center Of Bike And Did Not Have The Leverage For Such A Top Heavy Bike. Will Even Say Pushing Bike Into Garage Is So Much Nicer With The Wider Bars And The Leverage The 2 1/2" Wider Gives. Will Tell You I Bought A New Bar But Was Way Off And So Decided To Spread The Stock One With Fear Of Kinking Bar. I Saw No Kinking With Flatening The Bar On Plywood. Will Also Say Do Not Go Any Farther Than This For Cable And Wires Just Make This Distance Of 34 1/2" Wide. I Am Really Thrilled With The Way This Has Changed The Feel Of The Bike And Give Me The Confidence . I Did Do A Panic Stop With Grilfriend Aboard And Scared The Hell Out Of Her But I Needed To Know I Had A Feel Of Confidence In Riding And Stopping after changes made.. The Beast Is So Top Heavy Compared To Any Other BikeS I Have Owned.. But The Ride And Looks Of This Bike Are Beautiful. But You Have To Ride The Level And Speed The Bike Is Geared For..this Bike Is Know 85 Venture But My Girlfriend Loves The Ride Over 85 Venture And My Harley Springer...lol I Know Every One Will Not Agree With How I Feel But This Has Made The Bike That Much Nicer For Me And Wanted To Share My Findings Of This Bike In One Week Of Owning It. Joe In Nj
  8. Going to change my tires today... I purchased the Balancer from Marc Parnes, and looks like a fine tool...I have a Bike jack, and whole bunch of tools, Now to take the bike apart and get it all back together again.... wife thinks it will end up on the trailer getting hauled to the Stealer.... I may need to get with ya`ll if I run into problems....wish me luck, and any pointers for this would be appreciated.... Thanks, Kreg
  9. I don't mean to offend anyone who has a flame paint job on their bike but isn't anyone doing anything original? It seems like every othe bike out there has flames on it in one way, shape or form. I was just browsing through websites looking for custom paint ideas and almost all the paint jobs I saw, or at least 95% of them had flames. Why are flames so trendy? They look alright but if you are going to pay big $$$ for a custom bike, don't you want to make sure that it really stands out from the rest? I ride with a guy who paid $40k for a Screamin Eagle "custom" HD. I have seen 5 other guys riding the EXACT SAME BIKE in this area alone. Why pay the money for a "cookie cut" bike? And yes his bike too has flamed pinstriping. I guess I just don't get it.
  10. I sync'd my own carbs today. The Carbtune worked great and the information on this site is spot on!!! The left side was in sync with each other and so was the right. However the left was not in sync with the right.not far off but enough so as you would notice. Adjusted the screw and had even bars all of the way across. BIKE RUNS MUCH BETTER---EVEN GREAT. I LUV YOU GUYS!!!!!!!! If I can help anyone sync their carbs I will be glad to help.
  11. I picked this little bike up last week from a garage sale for $50.00, It has not ran for over 13 years. I changed the Oil, Plug and cleaned the tank out a bit. Got a new battery and cleaned the carb. and what do you know. she fired right up. My Question is when a bike sits that long is it normal for it to smoke for a while out of the muffler? (think i got a bad ring?) Valves?) My wife and I love going on the back roads here in Iowa but haven't since we bought the RSV.. I just don't like being on gravel roads with the much wight under me. Thanks, Jeff
  12. Getting ready to change both tire on the bike .Everybody here seems to go for Avon's tire (Venom) and putting a smaller size on the front wheel .What am I to do my mechanic here says that he had problems whit AVON tires and I don't want to put Bridgestone's on the bike again these are tough but they run hard and have no comfort . So what is the front size recommended .
  13. I have owned A 85 Venture for 3 yrs and wanted to upgrade to newer one. And on E Bay Saw MM Edition and fell in love . Fellow drove 2000 miles Texas to NJ with it. And my first 2 miles thought I went backwards 15 years. The whining noise and Handling was disappointing to a point if I had not bought it on E Bay would have told the guy to stick it you know where. My grilfreind loves bike and the ride and so now need to address the problems with this bike since she is the one that pushed E Bay Purchase now button . I ordered 36" wide handle bars to see if I can gain more steering control . The whining I can live with as long as I know it is normal. But not hearing it on 85 Venture I really thought I bought a lemon of a bike not knowing it existed on the newer bikes. ?????Has anyone felt the way I do about these newer bikes and what have you done to make bike handle and feel like you have control. Or am I going to have to sell the bike and go to a Goldwing which I do not like as far as looks go for a motorcycle. I think Yamaha better wake up if they want to continue in Dresser market. I would not buy another after what I have experience with this bike. Have to mention that I bought a new 96 Royal Star and loved bike until I relized taking balancer out caused me back problems..
  14. I just recently received my Diamond R leveling links and would like to install them on my bike. However I believe I read somewheres on here that a standard motorcycle lift won't lift the Venture. I have the craftsman model lift that many other companies also stick there name on. Why will this lift not work, and if it doesn't is there any other secret to installing them besides going to a shop? Thanks for your help guys.
  15. I did a 8 day trip to New England this year with my wife so the bike was pretty well loaded down. I have noticed even without the extra weight when I am going up hill in 5th gear when I give it throttle it really starts to vibrate and then stops once I crest the hill. Have just bought a trailer but will probably not get a chance to try it this year. I just hope with the extra trailer weight and the more I can pack if this will hurt the bike. Does anyone else notice the vibration when accelerating up hill?
  16. Just wanted to let you all know what happened yesterday. I had just got off work and had not been on the bike more than sixty seconds, when a lady turned left into me. I saw her car coming and I thought if I could hit the curb deadon I would have a better chance that way instead of her TBoneing me. Well I didn't make it that far, she caught me about two feet up from the rear of the bike on the left side and the next thing I know is that I'm airborn. I went about 20 feet and wound up going into grass on my right shoulder, doing at least two rolls and winding up on my hands and knees. Nothing broke and only 1 little cut on my right arm, although my right shoulder feels like it's ready to fall off. The lady was given a ticket for improper lane useage and now Nance and I get to play the insurance company game over the bike. I really do want to thank all the members for their thoughts and prayers, and we have allready started to look for a new bike. ( Sorry Redneck it will probably be another First Gen.)
  17. Does anyone know where I can get the connector that goes from the Bike to the passengers helmet on an 88 Venture? I have the piece that connects on the bike and plugs into the bike but I do not have anything to connect to the helmet. It has 11 pins. Any ideas????
  18. Opinions? http://lifeisaroad.com/stories/2004/10/27/theDarkSide.html
  19. I got My 86 VR going Sat. that I bought 2 wks ago. It had no clutch, no foot brake, and ran rough, so without a test drive I bought what I thought was a cozy, feature laden touring bike (which it is). After some maint. and minor tuning I was able to take it out for a ride. Holy smokes! These have the heart of a muscle bike. The next day my 20 yr old son & his girl came by with his 02 HD softtail - very shiny, loud, and impressive -, and he asks "Hey gramps, ya wanna go for a burn?" Yah, I spose, heh heh. It looked sort of like a comical mismatch - black leather with a shiny chrome rumbling Harley, and grandma & grandpa on their quiet, not yet polished luxamobile. We took alot of rural back roads and several times at various speeds he tried to show ol gramps his tail lights. But the 86 ate him like an snack, big time. I told him that maybe he should take up shuffle board. Gary
  20. I ride a 2000 Royal Star and I just purchase a tow behind trailer. The trailer comes with the standard 4 wire connector. Does anyone know of a site where I can get the info on how to hook up the four wire connector on the bike or if anyone has wired their bike to hook up the four wire connector.
  21. always looking for a way to put somthing else on the bike been looking for a good cup holder and i found this:thumbsup2: http://65.102.174.116/rammount/search.aspx?searchTerm=cup+holder
  22. I'm looking to buy an older Venture, most likely 1st generation as the prices seem right for my budget. I've just learned about the 2nd gear problems and come to accept the fact that I may have to fix this on my future bike. Now I'm hearing about the frames rusting and breaking in half...Makes me a little nervous to say the least. How common is this rust problem, and am I mistaken in assuming California bikes may not be as prone to it with the weather we have? How do I check it (can I?) before paying good money for a bike that's about to split...? Thanks, John
  23. My wife has been complaining this trip about a strong exhaust odor. I'm not sure yet that I've found the problem but this morning V7Goose and I were looking my bike over and found the notorious pinhole exhaust leak at the "Y" where the front and rear header pipes come together. I am only mentioning this because this is the first that he or I have seen this problem on the earlier RSV. I know that many of the '05 and/or '06 models had this issue but not the '99 and other models. I ended up pulling the "Y" off the bike and repaired it with JB weld. Seems to have worked very well. Still not sure if it's the source of the exhaust that is bothering Eileen but we'll know after we've had time time ride a bit more.
  24. I would just like to say thank you to everybody that gave advice and suggestions concerning the clutch on the moneypit. And the winner is.....MBrood! After reading everyone else's advice-he raised an interesting point. Knowing that I had just put a kit in the master cylinder, including the rod that works the thing, he started talking about aftermarket cylinders and handles. That got me to thinking- I have a black brake handle, but the clutch handle is polished metal, and when I bought the bike there was a broken black handle in the trunk. He said that if I had put in an OEM pushrod between the handle and cylinder-that the rod may be too long- filed off 1/8" from the end that goes into the handle, and no more slip. It seems that you always have to have a little handle free play to ensure no pressure in order for the return to be free. After filing down the rod, I've logged about 700 miles on the bike, 200 yesterday at 90+ temps. To quote Forrest Gump "that's good, one less thing". Thanks again guys.
  25. I know I will get a great deal of varying oppinions on this subject, but I would like some input on real experiences. I changed the oil on my bike when I first got it back in April and just used the brand-X from the local motorcycle shop and a Fram filter. I am going to stick with the Fram filter but would like some input on what types of oil are good to use. Is there any oil that has improved performance, fuel mileage or just seemed to make the bike run smoother altogether? I need to change the oil next weekend (Sept. 15) so if anyone wants to chime in, now is the time. I appreciate any input.
