  1. Bought a saddle bag on E-Bay to repair my bike from http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gifmkramfl. The guy was great to deal with. We had a small descrepancy reguarding the condition of the bag. I thought it needed to be painted. I sent him an e-mail requesting he call me. 2 days later (he was out of town) he called me and we settled immediately it to my satisfaction. I would go to this fellow again and recommend him to others on our site. Below is what I got (you should have seen how well he packed it). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=004&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=140171117319&rd=1
  2. I don't know how many others have had the same problem as I did. While on a trip I stopped along the side of the road and had to get my glasses out of the saddle bag to look at the map. Well decided to put the glasses in my pocket rather than back in the bag. Stopped for gas 31 miles later and realized my cover had blown off, forgot to latch it down. Lucky for me we turned around and 15.8 miles back in the middle of the road was my cover, a few scratches but still in good shape.
  3. Does anyone know if you can install an windshield bag on a Yamaha midnight Venture ... or is the space between the dashboard and the Windshield to small. I like to have something like this . http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/22001121/Images/3/WS21.jpg
  4. Hey All: Thought I would post so everyone could check their hard bags for a potential problem....While putting on the bag rails I dropped my allen wrench down between the metal plate in the bottom of the bag and the cloth material going down the side....Big hands, so decided to take the bag lid off....There are four screws that hold this plate on...three across the outside edge and one right in the middle of the bag....When I went to loosen the first one along the outside edge I though it was stripped.....On closer inspection I noticed it was broken...These three screws go into molded holes (stud like-raised about 1/2") as opposed to the one in the center of the bracket....On looking further, I discovered that ALL three molded studs were broken...This plate has never been off before....First attempt....I decided that during the install, (factory) they may have been over torqued...Took to the dealer with the three broken studs (with screws)...He just called and Yamaha is replacing the bag under warranty... Thought you might want to remove the foam thing from the bottom sometime and check these...Basically, the only thing holding on the bag lid was the one screw in the middle of this mount and the material support along the bag and lid sides....This happened on the left bag (from drivers position)....Right bag was OK... 5. I have my bag rails and front fender rails coming in on Friday and wanted to install this weekend...If anyone has done this, is there something to the install that I might need to know that would make it easier....I know I have to drill a hole in the front fender and if I want to lower the bag rails in the rear another hole will need to be drilled in the back (venturers.org site). Any tricks, shortcuts, tools that make this easier please reply.. George in Virginia:feedback:
  6. Looking for a left side saddle bag lid, or lid hardware. I got to work last friday and noticed my lid was gone. The terminal ends that were krimped to the lanyards was there, but the lid was gone with the lanyards. I guess they do not hold very well at 80. Thanks
  7. Besides the modified Road King mufflers, what is a good slip on for the RSV. I think I have it narrowed down between Samson Slash cuts or Baron exhaust. One style of the Baron exhaust... looking at the back of the bike you would see two pipes under each saddle bag. As with anything they are a little pricey, especially when you add the exhaust tips. If anyone uses these or is familiar with them, let me know. Thanks
  8. Ok, so late last night after spending about an hour on this site I got inspired and went out to work on Cassy (thats the name of my RSV). I am trying to remove the saddle bag but I cannot figure out how to unplug the CD changer to get it out of the saddle bag. HELP! I darn-near broke the plug trying to get it off. Somebody here has to know how to do this. Also, I was messing with the CB antenna and it just lifted off of its mount. Is it supposed to do that or did I break it? Need input!!!!!!!!!!!!! (P.S. I am removing the saddle bag rails and the CD changer just in case anyone is interested in purchasing them.)
  9. I've read several posts about the saddle bag trim rails (for the RSV) not fitting "properly" (as in not well aligned with the bags/exhausts; touching rear turn signals, etc.). And I read the excellent tech post about re-aligning them by making a new mounting hole, etc. However, I was wondering if anyone has purchased any lately, and if so, do they fit any better? The reason I ask is that I've found them to be on "backorder" at several dealers lately, and I'm hoping (yeah right) this may indicate a new batch is on the way. Smokee
  10. OK,,,, here goes Will 1986-1993 rear bag guards work on a 1983 venture will the bolt up or will i have to modify some part Thanks lee :confused24:
  11. On my 93, there are tabs on the front outside corners of the bag guards. Does anybody know what they designed for? Thanks, DJ
  12. Does anyone know where I can here a sound bite from a RSTD/VENTURE that have these pipe on them I have a 06 RSTD and looking to install a set of samson (slash-cut slip ons) or Baron's Nasty Boy Bag Slash slip-on pipes but i like to hear them before I deside,. Does anyone know which of them is LOUDER?
  13. I've noticed in several different catalogs, and various websites, leather bags that fit on the saddle bag guard rails of Harley's touring models. See this page for examples from Whitehorse Gear. My question is, does anyone have a set of these installed on the RSV, or know of any made specifically for it? I can't really see why they wouldn't fit, but I'd hate to invest in some only to find out the dimensions are off. Thanks in advance!
  14. OEM Bag Rails- Do the Lines Look Right to You? By Brad Norris “Boomer” OK, I couldn’t wait until I bought a set of OEM bag rails from a guy on bay. These were the Real McCoy and came in the OEM box. I made special time on a busy Saturday as soon as they arrived and mounted them up. Installation is quick and easy with the most time spent on removing the bags. After installation I admired them from all angles but wasn’t quite happy with the fit up. It appears to me that the bottom of the rails, when compared to the lines of the bag, just didn’t look right. The back end of the rails appears to be higher than in the front. Also, the back of the rails sat right under the turn signals- in fact, they touch each other. I quickly became suspicious of the Ebayer I bought these from but after looking at many pics on the forums I subscribe to, I saw the same trend in 95% of those I saw. Here is a side shot before with the camera leveling out on the rail. Muffler removed for clarity. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic1.jpg The rear distance from the bottom of the bag to the bottom of the rail is much different from the front measurement. Mine was out ¾”. To make the “gaps” closer to each other, either the back of the bags must be raised or the rails lowered in the rear. Since it is impractical to raise the bags, I decided to lower the rails. To do this, remove the bag and loosen the front mounting bolt on the rail. Here’s a back shot of the bike with the OEM mount up. Note that the rail rubs the signal. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic2.jpg I would suggest you do your own measurements to determine where to drill the new hole for the rear mount. Use a small “C” clamp on the rear mount when you think your measurement is close and then set the bag back on to see how it looks. It’s a bit tricky, but better to measure twice- and drill once. Important- Since the chrome rail you will drill into is “U” shaped, be mindful that you will have to put a metric nut behind it for the bolt. If you drill too close to the edge of the rail, you may not have enough room to thread the bolt in the new nut. The back of the rail has foam in it. Just make way for the new nut. I can’t remember the size of the nut but I bought it at Home Depot. When you have the final position, hold the back of the rail in place and use a spring loaded center punch to mark the new bolt location. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic3.jpg A spring loaded center punch makes this task a bit easier. If you don’t have one, GET ONE. Here’s a pic of mine: http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic4.jpg Be sure to put some scrap metal behind the bracket before you push the drill through the fender and god forbid…the tire! Now, place the rear bolt that came with the rails through the support in the hole you just drilled and fasten with a nut (metric). Retighten the front bolt and install the bag. You should have something that resembles this: http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic5.jpg When you’re done, you will notice the rails-to-bag lines look much better. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic6.jpg In the rear, the bag rails no longer rub the signals. Enjoy! http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic7.jpg http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic8.jpg
  15. Here's a pic of the right saddle bag off '83#2. Great conversation piece. Never knew so much damage could be caused by a caliper overheating.. This is the only thing it could have been because the caliper is sitting right next to this area of the bag. Talk about smokin'.... The cover of the bag was in great shape so I replace the back with an extra I had with a funky cover. Looks great....now... :)
  16. Does anyone have a tank bag on their RSV? I am looking for somewhere to put a pair of sunglasses , without having to pull over, when the sun goes down during a ride. Any other recommendations are appreciated. Pictures definitely help. Thanks, Mark
  17. I plan to take a long ride to the mountains next month so I will need to pack more than the RSV luggage will hold. What are the best options for a passenger seat bag and/or a trunk rack bag? I want something I can stuff full of clothes and extra gear, keep dry in the rain, and not have me kicking myself because I should have gone a step up. Please include pictures and websites if possible. And in case you were tempted to say so, a trailer is out of the question right now. With 3 bikes and no cars in the garage I don't want to push for more right now. Thanks.
  18. Saturday, I rode up to Anamosa, Iowa with a friend (mostly in a hard down pour for more than an hour) to see the motorcycle museum and go to J & P Cycles. I looked for a tank bag for my 89 Venture but it seems they are hard to fit. What tank bag favorites do others use for their 1st gen? I'm looking for a small to medium size bag. Tim
  19. I just picked up the Plain Jane leather tool pouch from Carolina Leather Works [http://www.carolinaleatherworks.com]. I just mounted the bag to the from of my bike. It attaches right to the crosbar for the highway lights. This is the tool pouch, it's only $19.95+5.95s&h. I ordered it Sunday and I put in on the bike Thursday. I think I'll dress it up a bit with a Yamaha Star Concho. My tools (2 cresent wrenches, 1 3/8 ratchet, 2 metric hex key sets, 1 metric ratchet set, 2 philips screw drivers, 1 driver with 2 dozen bits) all fit snuggly. They won't be rattling around up there. This tool pouch will give me back some room in my saddle bag. Get bagged at Carolina Leather Works!
  20. If any of you had the unfortunate or helpless feeling as I have had when you try and take the saddlebag or trunk of the brackets and all the key and lock does is turn turn turn, really sucks!! Well, what I did was take the locking mechanism off the bag (in my case bags), unscrew plate on back remove circular tumbler (making sure not to lose the spring that holds pressure on latch), replace plate and install lock back on to bag. Now, to remove bag from bracket just take screwdriver or knife blade and push against front side of latch. Holding latch with blade push bag backwards. Not the best way to fix the problem but it works for me!!!
