  1. the first mod you can do and will have to do if you go to v-max cams, is install a dyna 3000.this allows you to raise the rev limit.with out this you won't be able to use the power curve available with the cams.there is alot of power to be had with the stock cams.if you eliminate the rev limiter.the stock cams aren't all that bad.i'm thinking about maxxing out my rstd.with v-max heads and cams.the v-max heads have bigger ports and valves, and heavier springs to handle the 9500 red line on the max.i need to find out if the heads will bolt on to a 1300 block.try some exaust relief, dyna 3000, and a little rejetting and i think you will be surprised how much power you have on tap with your stock motor.i think mine runs pretty good for almost 900 pounds.i dusted a z car pretty good the other night, and never shifted.ran him from 30 to 75 in second gear.bill
  2. thanks for the great pic's rick.i think your right on the scoring of the ram.i think the groaning noise is the seal. when i let the air out of mine it makes no noise.i think when the seal has pressure behind it .the neoprene is forced against the metal and forces the lube out and runs kind of dry.causing the groan.going to try something slick like stp mixed with a light oil to eliminate the groan.mine does'nt leak yet but from the sound it won't be long.bill
  3. my shock on my 05 really groans when cold at started all of a sudden at 12,000 miles.i shot oil in the air tube (about one ounce),and it did'nt help much.i think it's the seal making all the noise.i was thinking about mixing something really slick like stp with light oil and see if that would cure it.it doesn't leak yet but from the sound of the seal it won't be long before it gets ate up.i'll let you all know if it works.bill
  4. i would'nt have to worry about motorcycle accidents if i did'nt have to worry about people in cages on cell phones, tailgating, speeding ,eating, putting on make-up,passing in my lane.changing lanes with out looking or signaling, running red lights, and on and on.the drivers out there now are the absolute worst ever.oh and i forgot the old farts that some how manage to get there license renewed.every one is trying to pack two days into one anymore.they need to slow down and obey the laws.and pay attention.that includes alot of us.just cuz we ride bikes don't make us perfect.i honestly try to drive safely and be curteous to my fellow drivers.do you? bill :stirthepot:
  5. that was a very informative article, thanks for posting it.that pretty well explains it all.i had a 1980 sportster that called for dot 5 brake fluid.i wonder if all harleys do.bill
  6. before i posted my previous thread i tried mixing dot.3 and dot. 5, you are right the don't mix .never heard of 5.1 maybe it was an upgrade of five so it would be compatible with other fluids.bill
  7. i use mobile1 10w-30 automotive in everything including my lawn mower.slickest oil you can buy.bill
  8. i agree, frame flex can also lead to metal fatigue and breakage.thou should'nt question mother yamaha.the support is there for a reason.bill
  9. i think the only difference is dot 5 is silicone base and 3&4 aren,t .dot 4 has a minumum wet boiling point of 311 degrees, dot 3, 294, and dot 5 is 500 degrees f .and 3 & 4 don't mix with dot 5. don't know if dot 5 will affect the rubber brake parts.the soft parts of brake systems specifying dot 5 may be made of a different material.i would go with the recomendations of the manufacturer on brake fluid. bill
  10. don't know why it would'nt have a clock. like eck said look in the manual.you may have one.i've got one in mine, although i never use it.i bought a handle bar mount clock off ebay, so i can read it anytime without pressing buttons.bill
  11. heres the straight scoop on high octane fuel.this is from dyno results on a friend of mines engine that was using aircraft fuel.if you have preignition problems due to high compression or other things ,such as excess carbon or a hot spot in the combustion chamber. you definately need a higher octane fuel to prevent detonation and slow down the burning rate of the fuel.if you have no preignition problems you will actually.lose horse power and engine effiency do to the slower burn rate of the fuel.his engine had no preignition problems and he made more horse power with unleaded regular then with aircraft fuel on the dyno.there is nothing in high octane fuel to make it produce more power.the only difference is the additive which was once lead, that is added to slow down the burn rate,to prevent preignition and engine damage.bill
  12. mike that was awesome.it brought a tear to my eye.i almost lost linda two years ago with four brain aneurysms.it really took me to my knees.i am so lucky that i still have her.i know exactly what you are feeling.we have a habit of taking our wives and loved ones for granite.i will never allow that to happen again.we are not out of the woods yet .but we enjoy life a day at a time.i think time will heal but you have all the good memories to keep you going.hang in there good buddy.bill
  13. ive got the starmate on my rstd. and thats what sold me ,the size.i hard wired it through a preamp ,to helmet speakers.bill
  14. i think you can use automatic transmission fluid,or any light oil.oil is oil.it is just there for the dirt to stick to.the k&n oil looks like atf. to me.bill
  15. when you get ready i will tell you what size to use. my rstd will darn near pull the front wheel just rolling on the throttle in low gear.unbelievable lowend responce.bill
  16. thats a fair price ,make sure they are the right ones.they are on there a little cheaper once in a while.if you want to wait.bill
  17. rick thats great info .got a question my bike has 12,000 mi. on it and the shock started groaning all of a sudden.could the outer seal be that dry with that few of miles? mine is consistant and very loud, when i bounce on it.bill
  18. i've got the starmate.they don't list the starmate am i looking at the right one?1 foot $29.95.bill
  19. you don't have to rejet, but what a kick in the butt if you do.mostly if you throw in the dyna 3000.got to jet it right. just throwing in big main jets doesn't do anything for the rpm,s where you ride most.the secret is in the pilot jets. bill
  20. keep us posted if you do it.i would like to shorten mine.bill
  21. to some of us our pets are like our kids.i wish they could live longer than they do.i know just how you feel.i am so sorry.bill :depressed:
  22. don where could i get one of these tenders?bill
  23. it's unbelievable that as long as they've been making motorcycles.and the high tech stuff on them, they can't make a seat thats comfortable.i have never had to buy an aftermarket seat for a car.bill
