  1. no biggie... I kinda threw my response "in there" just so others would know ... :D
  2. I'm a little beyond the "starting out" stage... been experimenting with Linux off and on for roughly 10 years. Currently run one of the servers at work with OpenSuSe 10 ... I downloaded openSuSe 11.1 but found it fails numerous times when trying to download it's updates. But, the simpler, the better ... question... can MEPIS connect to Active Directory domain?
  3. I'm testing Kubuntu on one of the spare PC's at work. Tried Fedora... not bad. Haven't seen PClinux yet... I'll check that out. KDE4 is similar to Windows Vista the way the menu works. MEPIS?? not sure what that is but I'll check it out.
  4. "a real Venture" ... thought I'd include that just to make it "legal" for the site LOL anyhoo... playing with Linux distro's again... currently typing this from within Firefox on a Ubuntu Linux OS. One real interesting thing is that even the current Linux OS recognizes my HP Scanjet 4100c where Windows Vista won't ... go figure eh? ... ole Microsoft POS Just wondering what some of you others are running for Linux disto's (RedHat, Fedora, Suse...??)

Chances are that if both your HD and your CD are SATA that you won't have an IDE channel on your motherboard. What you may be able to do is install Windows 7 onto the same HD. In so doing, it will create a "dual boot". You might want to look into partitioning the HD before although the install process of Win7 might give you some options for that. Better dig into that before "jumping in"
  6. BMW = Big Motorcycle (that) Whines ...
  7. Maybe ya'll need to replace that "item"... To answer the question tho... at 65mph (104.6 kmh) I get very little in 5th and none in 4th. Below 100 in 5th and I can hear it but it's not too bad.
  8. yeah sure ... I do that and I'll be crying the germs outta me! can't eat onions neither. get severe gut pains
  9. I had my '85 up to 137 mph once (according to the speedo) ... she wanted to go faster but I jammed out. Fastest I've gone on the '06 is about 112 mph (by the speedo).
  10. Seems to me that one was posted before and got dumped....
  11. he was askin about the RSTD ... not the Venture ... and even at that you gave the WRONG answer!
  12. Rum & Coke wait a min... that's not the cure, that's the cause!
  13. A couple weeks ago we had an "in-depth" thread about the flu shot, etc. Apaprently it's a proven fact that a person can't get the flu from a flu shot but that doesn't mean to say a person won't get sick or contract some other strain of flu. Personally I don't believe I've ever had a flu shot and I'm not about to start. I rarely get sick and that tells me that I have a strong immune system ... why fix it if it ain't broke? Now, if only my immune system would do something about this hangover!!
  14. I didn't get a flu shot and I still wound up with a hangover.
  15. pssssstttttttt.... guyz ... the "cat" will be away... lets go crazy with those political threads!!!
  16. Without pics, we don't believe you ...
  17. I wonder if Windows 7 will recognize my HP Scanjet 4100c scanner. Neither Microsoft (in Vista) nor HP will build a driver for it so rather than going out and spending another $100 for a compatible scanner, I run a dual OS on my home PC. WinXP and WinVista (Vista mostly coz it came with it and I wanted to thoroughly check it out). When I need to scan something, I reboot into XP. XP runs off a separate HD so I swap the 1st boot drive in the BIOS to do this.
  18. OH YEAH !!! the last 20+ years of my life I owe to Mr Gates and his comany.
  19. I suppose a person could run a Virtual Machine with something like VMWare within Linux and run Windows and then the Office apps ... wondering tho how the connectivity across a network would be for that... hmmmmmmm I think I have some experimenting to do... With Samba in Linux, files can be accessed from Windows across a network. Open Office is great and the current version even opens Office 2007 "x" files. We use Open Office on our "Agent" PC's here at work but run custom Access/Excel/Word apps as well so this is a "must have" thing for us.
  20. Linux is a good choice. One question ... can you run Microsoft Office in it? Outlook, Access, Visio, custom Visual Basic apps...etc ?? The answer is.... yes & no ... a person has to install "Wine" in order to install/run Office apps and even with it, you run into compatibility and configuration issues and not all "Microsoft" apps are compatible. Linux is good but only if a person does not have to run customized Office apps (such as a custom Access or VB application) or other specialized apps that are designed to run in a Windows environment. A person wants to keep this in mind before making the jump to Linux. For the "basic" user, Linux is great but going beyond that, be prepared to learn a lot of "command language" (kinda like the old DOS environment) FYI, I have experimented with Linux (off and on) for at least 10 years and currently run a server with it using SuSe Linux 10.0. This server acts as a file server for all of our Windows based systems. I am also testing it as a MySQL database server but have found a Windows server runs MySQL to Windows clients with less hassle. Some of the other "tekkies" here maybe have more strength in knowledge of this than I do so the above is all from my point of view / experience.
  21. Might as well put a roof and doors on it and call it a "HondaCage"
  22. From Microsoft site... If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit) 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver Additional requirements to use certain features: Internet access (fees may apply) Depending on resolution, video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware For some Windows Media Center functionality a TV tuner and additional hardware may be required Windows Touch and Tablet PCs require specific hardware HomeGroup requires a network and PCs running Windows 7 DVD/CD authoring requires a compatible optical drive BitLocker requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 BitLocker To Go requires a USB flash drive Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1 GB of RAM, an additional 15 GB of available hard disk space, and a processor capable of hardware virtualization with Intel VT or AMD-V turned on Music and sound require audio output Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require advanced or additional hardware.
  23. You would be well advised to also do a "system state backup" using Windows built-in backup utility. Better yet, if you can find some kind of Imaging software on a bootable CD ... create an image of your HD. If things go wrong, you can simply re-apply the image and all is back to what it was.
  24. Speaking about cheap drives, I just bought a one Terabyte 3.5" external USB hard drive (for use at work) for $150 .... wow! "memory sticks" are dirt cheap nowadays ... 8Gig ones go for as little as $15 - $20
  25. Over the past couple years I have seen cases where the same joke gets posted multiple times by different people. I would think this feature cuts down on that...some. I like it because when I start a thread about something, it helps to see if what I'm going to post has already been posted (the reason for the feature) and it saves me the process, plus, it doesn't double-up on the same thing... I can just add to the end of what's already there. 'course, ya'll already know this and it doesn't answer Jack's question .... I just like typing a whole lot of nuthin...
