I put new pads on the bike last fall and started getting a brake squeak when applying the front brake. It doesn't squeak through the entire braking time, only during the last bit (under 5 mph) until you stop. I broke it down last night and applied brake gel to the back of the pads thinking it was that issue, but, it had no effect of the squeak. It was still there during the last moments of stopping. Any suggestions on what's causing the squeak and how to solve it? I checked and all the squirrels are still in their cages, on the wheels and ready to run..... Dave

86-93 needle jet shim?
utadventure replied to jdog910's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try looking at this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3770&title=first-gen1983-to-1993-vr-needle-shim-mod-kit-21&cat=22 Not hard to do. Remove the diaphram/slider from the carb, disassemble the needle portion, remove the washer and replace with the thinner washer(s). Re-assemble and re-sync the carbs. Dave -

I put in Progressives. I agree, you'll love them! I found the 10wt. a little soft but didn't want to go all the way to 15wt. so, I put 7 oz of 15wt. and 6.5 oz of 10wt. and enjoy the ride very much (total 13.5 oz). Big key is to put equal amounts in each. Dave -
Happy Birthday and thanks for all your hard work and the best site on the web!! Dave & Jan

Miles- That's a great looking Silverwing. Thanks for sharing! We wished we could find an '82 and upgrade to the 650 but didn't have luck on that one. Ride On!! Dave

Some of you know my son Sam, a couple of years ago he was riding an '81 Honda Silverwing. On the way to work one night, FedEx mid-night shift, the motor went out...siezed! We looked at changing out the motor but wasn't working very well. We not afraid to turn a wrench but it wasn't coming together. In December I ran across an '81 without all the plastic but a good running motor. Three months later, the owner finally accepted my offer the transition back to a full dress bike. We got part way through the transition today but still have to move the faring and swap it with the headlight and turn signals. http://s470.beta.photobucket.com/user/utadventure/library/Sams%20New%20Silverwing I'll update the file next week when we finish. Dave (and Sam)

Canada is welcome to visit anytime....

Welcome to the insanity!! You don't have to own a Harley for us to make fun and take shots at you.... besides there are probably more Harleys on the road than all other bikes together..... the rest are carefully tucked away in their garages waiting for summer....LOL My wife loves her Sportster!! Dave

I don't have a trike but have many friends that do. They all seems to enjoy a site called triketalk.com, you'll probably get some great feedback from the folks on there. Dave

Looks like you are going to have a great trip!! Are you interested in extending your Grand Canyon trip a couple of days?? You could cut east across I-70 and we can meet you in Green River, UT and go on to Moab, UT. In the Moab area we can visit Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse State Park. We usually stay at the Archview Campground, their cabins are very reasonable compared to the Moab hotels. Is it July yet!? Getting tired of the cold and snow. Dave

If you like trains, you can hit Promontory Point where the transcontinental railroad met in 1869. They have replica trains and reinact the driving of the golden spike. About 95 miles. South of SLC in the Timpanogos Cave. It's a fun hike and beautiful canyon. Dave

The Kennecott Copper Mine (open pit mine visible from space), Tab Choir has practice on Thursday evening that are free and open to the public and Temple Square is wonderful to visit also, lots of beautiful mountains to drive/ride through. If you go to the Salt Flats, go the extra 15 minutes to Wendover, NV and enjoy the casino buffets. Depending on when you come through, there are rodeos you can attend. Dave

When you're in Salt Lake City, stop by and say hello!! From SLC I would suggest going south to Zions National Park, then east to Bryce Canyon (only a couple of hours visit) then further west to Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park. This leaves you in great position to go to the four corners area and then on to the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado etc. Dave

I have a lead on a '96 Royal Star with 18k on the odometer. I'm curious about the motor....is it the same as the 1st Gen or the 2nd Gen or somewhere in between? Anything I should look at? Opinions? Dave

Another idea... If you are planning to spend the night in Jackson, WY (Jackson Hole), plan a fun evening withe the Bar J Wranglers. Just be sure to arrive early. That way you get good parking, a table near the stage and fed first (everyone gets fed quickly). They have a great, and entertaining, way of getting the food served. Dave

Emigration Canyon = Emigration Canyon Road East Canyon = Hwy 65 then frontage road to Coalville/Wanship To Kamas/Francis = Hwy 32 Wolfcreek Pass = Hwy 35/UT208 to US40 to Duchesne/Roosevelt/Vernal Also, a number of great rides, Paul! http://mapq.st/WDmaH8 Dave

Ideas will depend on what time of year you'll be taking the trip. Coming south thru the Tetons you'll end up in Evanston, WY. If time is available, from there, you can take Hwy 150 over Mirror Lake Hwy to Kamas, UT and then down to SLC. This is a great ride and will add about an hour to this leg of the trip. Heading out of SLC east on I80 and then taking Hwy 40 to Colorado, you can go a little south and ride Hwy31 from Fairview to Huntington, then Hwy 191 from Price to Duchesne, where you can join up to Hwy 40 and finish going east to Dinosaur. This will add roughly 2.5-3 hours to this section. Assuming we're around, you'd be welcome to borrow an auto to go out to Kennecott. Dave

Creole- The mine works 24/7/365. I'm not sure what roads you're looking at riding but there are better roads to ride in Utah. The mine doesn't do as much with tours and such anymore. I haven't heard of kids going on field trips for years. Let me know what you are thinking of riding and I'll find out what I can. Here's what the their website says: For safety reasons, motorcycles can no longer enter the mine, including the road to the visitors center. They are very, very safety conscience and see motorcycles as a higher risk. Dave

Carb problem-not spraying gas.
utadventure replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ron- Earl has given some great info! When I bought my '86, it wouldn't idle, so the dealer mechanic adjusted it and brought it back. Come to find out, they monkeyed with the sync screws, not the idle screw. Condor suggested I start at the beginning....back the sync screws out so that there was no adjustment on any of them. Next, reset the mixture screws to 2 1/2 to 3 turns out (turn them in, count the turns and record in case you need to return them to the current settings). Start the bike and sync the carbs. Take it for a nice ride and see if there is an improvement. Good Luck!! Dave -
If some of our fine members in TX can get it moving, maybe to V7Goose (hint, hint, hint), some others in NM might be able to get it to the four corners area by the end of April. I could ride down to Monticello, UT or Cortez, CO and bring it the rest of the way to Salt Lake. Any volunteers??? We have some time to work it along. Dave

Looks like you handled the situation perfectly. You had your firearm in case the situation required it, you remained calm and didn't inflame the situation and you allowed the proper authorities to remove the threat. I'd say you earned yourself a twinkie, but they aren't available, so it will have to be an attaboy! Dave

Glad you're injuries were minimal. Tell Santa (a.k.a. the insurance company) you'd like a new truck for Christmas!! Dave

I have a 30 year old Craftsman chainsaw and I had to have it worked on this last year. When I got it back, it worked perfect. The tech told me it will always work that way if at the end of use, for an extended time, I would empty the tank and then run the saw until it wouldn't start again, I would never pay for carb work again. I'm trying and so far, no issues, but it's early on still. Dave

Be sure to change the air filter while you have it torn down!
