Way back when folks were talking about plastic welders, someone posted that JB Weld would bond the ABS. Anyone had success with it?

I was on & off 66 (was traveling mostly I40 due to limited time), passing through OK, TX & NM. Make sure you stop at the old tourist sites wherever you can along your route (Big Texan Steak House, Cadillac Ranch, Lucille’s Gas Station, Lucille’s Roadhouse Restaurant, etc), and visit the Rte 66 Museum in Clinton, OK (was a nice stop on a hot day!). Make sure you stay a night in one of the old motels like the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM or the Historic Rte 66 Motel (really nice owner who's working on revamping the motel). Like others have said, lots of info available on line. Parts of the original Mother Road are hard to find and don't always connect through today so be careful mapping out the route. Plan on maintenance while on the trip (oil, tires, etc). Leave plenty of time to wonder along as you visit some great American adventures like "LIVE RATTLE SNAKES!" and Alma, AR - Spinach Capital of the World! pa_don

Original mesh jacket was a Power-trip silver & black w/ liner. Liner was not for rain just to cut air flow so you still needed some sort of rain gear to keep dry. GREAT airflow in 90 degree+! Would still have it but zipper finally gave out after many years of service. Replaced with a Joe Rocket (Phoenix 5.0). I wanted to bight yellow/green on black but couldn't get it at the time so I have all black. Good air flow. Liner is both for air flow and rain. Works as advertised. Now for the good stuff... the reason we even wear jackets in HOT weather... PROTECTION! Some may remember I went down last July 4th in Yellowstone. Totaled my '99 and got banged up pretty good... VERY long ride to Cody in the back of an ambulance strapped to "the board". Details? RJ air helmet - surface scratches but definitely had micro fractures all over.... Pants were First Gear (Mesh-tech 2 over pants) - only has some minor road rash on left leg that took most lower body impact... NO rips, tears penetrations. Hip padding did its job well! Mesh HD gloves - road rash in palms and seam rips on several figures but no skin damage! The Jacket ??? The Joe Rocket ... Took the worst of it... I slid on my upper left side at impact ... several seams ripped open on left arm, cuff & shoulder... BUT... I had NO damage to my street clothes or skin! The jacket did more than its job... That’s why I bought another... Some say it’s just too hot! Mesh actually helps keep you cooler by minimizing the amount of fluid evaporation from the air whipping across exposed skin surface.... Not to preach as we all have our own ideals but remember... dress for the fall, that way when it happens you’re prepared! pa_don

Jeff, Thanks for clarifying. Makes sense based on the clearance I see. pa_don

Jeff, Thanks. I didn't have time to pull the trunk off today but I am assuming the rubber spacers you mentioned are the same ones that are used up front and are made to fit over the chrome subframe. I wasn't sure if that would be enough to raise it up and clear the lip in the body. If I get time later I want to put it off and see just how much more clearance it needs. pa_don

OK.. with the Hannigan conversion you loose the helmet locks that were mounted under the top trunk. What's everyone doing with their helmets when your fully loaded down? I had to replace my helmet from the accident last year and the new version is slightly higher on the top and will no longer fit in the top trunk either. I looked at a couple of other lock mounting systems but curious what everyone has found to work for them. pa_don

So the bike passed PA inspection today (WHEW!) I was concerned about the LED lights and flashing rate. There is no load equalizer installed and they flash right at the FPM limit PA allows. Got the new rubber on the front and it actually seemed to make a world of difference in handling (or maybe just my imagination!) They would not pass the bike if I had them mount the tire with reverse rotation... oh well, we'll see how this goes...... now if I could get some decent weather I could actually get out and RIDE! Don, keep us posted on how the Kendra Kruz wears. I started looking at it very close before going with the 404. It looks like it could be one of the most squared off tires out there making it perfect for the trike! Thanks everyone for all the input. pa_don

Jeff, I agree.... although it all seems to be in the stock locations, it is much tighter. I even feel as if I have been moved up forward in the front. I looked at your pics - NICE MM! - and see what you were talking about. Will need to spend some time playing around to see what I can do. pa_don

Thanks for verifying it can be done. I looked at the mounting. Seems mine is in the front 2 holes of the mounting plate. There are no nuts on the back holes and the ones in the front hole appear to tack welded in place. I did verify I have the trunk re-enforcement plates. When I moved the trunk back to the where it would be if I could mount it in the rear position, it looked like it would hit that lip. I'll have to pick up a couple nuts and see if I can shift it back. The rear just seems to be cramped with it in the front position.

George, I do owe you a public "THANK-YOU"! The info will definitely help out and you've been more than generous with your time. Given my cash position right now, I won't be doing the rack for a while but everyone seems to agree that it really makes a world of difference. I'm sure I could do it once I muster up the courage and just start. I figure a few months of wrestling this beast around will "convince" me! Based on what little back roads I have been on, seems you can really get a workout taking the twisties....

There is a home made solution posted on the other venture site howver I did not want to copy as it is marked. You can also buy just the button from Parts Fish (www.partsfish.com). It is located in the "travel bag" section and is part #99, "button 1". Cost is steep at $13.47 before shipping / tax!

For those that have the Hannigan conversion, Is it possible to move the top trunk back to the rear or second location to provide more passenger room? Mine looks to be mounted in the first or forward set of holes and looks like it will hit the small lip that is on the Hannigan kit just above the bottom trunk if the top trunk were to be moved back. pa_don

Larry, You made me reconsider the 404's. I looked at what was already on the bike and yep, a standard Dunlop front 404. The trike had just over 14K on it and this looked like it could have been the original tire. So I ordered up a REAR 404 (of the correct size). Got it for a little over $100 on sale shipped direct to the dealer for FREE too! Hoping I just had a poor set last time. If it doesn't work out I'll probably try the Continentals pa_don

Larry, Thanks for the input. Up till the last pair of 404's I had good luck. The last ones just "burned" out way too fast. I'm impressed with your milage. The best I got out of them on 2 wheels was just over 14K and I thought that was GREAT! I had heard some good things about the Bridgestones when on a trike - most people don't seem to like them for 2 wheels. Still struggling, but I need to make the order tonight to have one in time for inspection this week. Looks like lots of rain locally so I won't get much time to "play". I'll take any input anyone has. Best way to learn the ropes! pa_don

Thanks for the nice comments. You are all correct. I have Kumos on the rear with lots of tread left. They seem to ride pretty nice. I am looking at putting a rear tire of the correct size up front to get some extra tread like lots of others. Larry, I thought about the Dunlop (404s) but I was not pleased with the last one I had on the rear of my 2 wheel. I only got about 4500 miles before she was worn out. Just curious is yours mounted with "reverse" rotation? I am no tire expert and in looking at the Metzlers there are several "versions" of the 150/80-16. Not really sure which one I should get. I also looked at the Continental Milestone since they are used on other baggers and seem to have good tread life. Oh well, I guess I need to cash in some more pop bottles to get coin for the EZ Steer & aux fuel tank! May take a while..... Craig, I'll be coming up your way but in the cage to take the daughter back to school at KU. Will definitely keep the offer in mind, Thanks! pa_don pa_don

After more than a year of being bikeless since loosing my 2 wheeler in Yellowstone, I found an '07 with a Hannigan conversion. Sorry to anyone that I might have beat out on this deal but I knew I had to move fast. The bike is in great condition overall and very low miles. Gas mileage is only in high twenty's and I squeaked 30 out of 1 tank but carbs are in need of a sync. I would hope to get it back into the mid 30's. I've seen a few other that said they were getting upwards near 40 mpg but that's about what I used to get with 2 wheels. I have to get an inspection (PA) done next week and I know it needs a new front tire. I am leaning to the Metzler 880 (rear) right now pending any other input from others. I am also looking for any information on the conversion (I know Hannigan does not provide an install guide) but am hoping there is a maintenance guide. There was nothing that came with the bike. It does not have the EZ Steer rack kit so I am looking for input from others that may have waited to have it installed after the initial trike was done. I can handle it ok but it can take some strong arming in the curves. Does it really make a big difference on the Venture since the front is already slightly racked? I also heard that just adding the Baron's risers can make a great difference in the amount of effort required to steer. So far I like it and will be starting to put some "touches" to it over time. Any input is appreciated!

Need Prayers for Ponch!!!

Prayers sent for speedy recovery -
Laptop & suit coat in the top trunk. Dress shoes and other material needed for the day in the saddle bag. Bought a nice pair of over pants w/ liner (for rainy days) from New Enough. Wore pants & riding jacket over dress cloths. Worked great. Off with riding jacket & pants, change shoes from riding boots and ready for work! Beats having to fully change all your cloths. Jacket doesn't show any worse for being folded over in trunk. Better yet, I dressed properly for the ride!

If you have any of the major carriers it may be less expensive to just "add a line" and share minutes under a family plan. Most additional lines start at $9.99 + taxes. If you need a separate plan and you don’t need many minutes you can use Jitter bug (http://www.jitterbug.com/RatePlans/). They use Verizon Wireless network, have US based customer service and really focus on concierge services. Phone choices are limited but the design is and use is unbelievable. They were designed with "seniors" in mind and have one on the best ear pieces on the market. Hope this helps. pa_don

Help!! Gas shut off valve
pa_don replied to Godlover's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Same thing ... tapped it back in and no problems. The gasket eventaullay started to leak and di a rebuild but never had any more problems with the brass fitting! pa_don -
Allan, I can't say much regarding the windscreen. I wouldn't think the additional dimensions would be much of a hindrance. It's only 1" wider... BUT....having had them sit side by side I can tell you that the 250W is worth the extra few $. It is so much easier to see / read. That 1" makes a world of difference (at least for me, as my eyes seem to keep getting worse. It you are going to use the suction mount, they units sit far enough away that the 1" should be no problem. pa_don

Help w/ clutch not disengaging
pa_don replied to pa_don's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK follow-up. It took a while but I got the re-build kit for the master. Just got it done. Bled the line and seem to have a nice solid pull and the clutch lever now returns all the way out. It did not do this before. I did find the outer gasket ""ripped" and the brass fitting in the lever looked very worn. Now my question.. Folks have said that there will be a little drag when in gear and the bike raised... how much tire spin in "normal? Speedo shows about 3-4 MPH. I f I push the rear down so the tire makes round contact I do not feel any pull what so ever. SO... is this normal??? or should I be looking into a slave replacement? Inquiring minds want to know... pa_don -
Fuel Petcock Issue?
pa_don replied to robbitybob's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Bob, The fuel lines have a tendency to "stick" to the brass fitting. I have had mine pull out. You should be able to remove the line from the fitting with a little effort. I had to "pry" mine off with a small screwdriver until it was "loose". The brass fitting will just push back in to the fitting and be re-seated. I had that happen when I had to change the rubber gaskets due to leaking. I had not leakes or problem with the fittings after I reseated it. pa_don -
Help w/ clutch not disengaging
pa_don replied to pa_don's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Kent, This is where I am headed. Just started to look at what would be involved to rebuild master. I bled the fluid but thought it seemed to only push a little fluid a few times. Bike was running fine before it started dragging. I was going to ask others if there was a good way to determine if the problem could be in the master or the slave - so as to know which one to take a shot at first... Thanks! pa_don -
Help w/ clutch not disengaging
pa_don replied to pa_don's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Squeeze, I bled the line pretty good but be glad to try your solution. When I leave the clutch pulled in overnight, do I leave a) the bleeder open over night too, b) open the bleeder in the morning before releasing the lever, or c) wait until after the lever has been released and pumped 4 to 5 times then bleed? pa_don
