This is how I fixed my broken windshield bracket tabs on my 2004 RSV. I used a wire tie around the speaker boss and wrapped it around the windshield bracket. i cut a piece of rubber off the windshield bracket so the wire tie would be flush.

This is what I like to drive when the bike is parked. Not to often though it only has 30K miles. 1954 Chevrolet Belair

Where are the pilot screws?
54chevybelair replied to DANGEROUSDANA's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Could it be that this bike was set up for the aftermarket pipes, as far as jetting. Now with the stock pipes, the bike is running too rich. I have always thought decel popping could be caused from a too lean or rich condition. I'm sure one of the experts will comment on this. Just my thoughts. -
I have purchased a used Hannigan side car
54chevybelair replied to Sylvester's topic in Trike & Sidecar Talk
Hello, I am considering adding the same sidecar to my 2004 RSV. Could you please tell me where you bought the mounts to fit your bike. I have been looking for a good used sidecar for awhile and found nothing in my area. Your sidecar looks great and I look forward to seeing the final pictures of it. -
Apparently I like turning left more than I like turning right....
54chevybelair replied to GG54172's topic in Watering Hole
i was always told that because we turn left faster than we turn right, the left side of the tire will always wear faster. right turns are usualy much tighter radius's. left turns are larger radius's and we carry more speed therefore wearing the tire more on the left. -

Every time I read about people talking negative about Harleys I think of my friend. He just traded in his 2004 Heritage Softtale with 90K miles. The bike did not give him a lick of trouble. All he did was the general maintenance himself. He now has a Fatboy and plans on putting more miles on. He just returned from a 5K mile trip with zero problems. To me Harley is still a company striving to succeed. I’m not a Harley history buff, but in 1999 I think they had a 88ci motor then changed to a 90 something and then in 2007 it changed to a 96ci. Now the engine is a 103ci. Sometime in there, they went to fuel injection. In 2007 they added 6th gear and in 2009 well over 100 improvements including an all-new frame. Now in 2012 a 103ci motor is standard for most models. I do not believe they still offer a cassette, in fact I think they have a USB port to play MP3’s. The only people or companies that do not fail, are the ones who do not try to improve. The ones who dust themselves off and move forward will succeed. I am a proud owner of a 2004 RSV. My bike looks just like a 1999-2012 with no changes. Maybe if Yamaha would strive for improvements we would see more issues with our machines.

anyone have a guage pod for sale
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks Slab_Ryder and Seaking. I have not read anything bad about these gauges other than they are expensive. I just installed mine, it was very easy, it looks and works great. Just for a tach $240 is expensive but the housing it comes in is very well done and the chrome seems good. The angle is not adjustable but it is in a good location to easily read whenever I want. -

thanks sylvester, I thought it was worth a try. I may look at the Baron's tach mounted on the brake resevoir. -
I seen this in old threads. I know the original designer is no longer with us. Does anyone have one laying around they would like to sell or has anyone taken over production? Looks like a great way to mount a couple gauges.

engine vibrations

I just wanted to give everyone an update. I did park the bike for awhile, but I couldn't stand looking at it sitting anymore. I like the ergonomics and the appearance of this bike, I just needed to get it running better. A FJR friend told me on his forum they recommend syncing the carbs at cruising RPM’s. I don’t have a tachometer (need one) so I’m only guessing I set the carbs about 2500 RPM’s. This helped tremendously. The engine vibration was almost completely gone and it would run 75 mph on the x-way even on a steep incline. The inconsistent running was also gone, doesn’t make any sense but it hasn’t returned. Next a coworker had a used set of Vance & Hines pipes he let me have at a deal I couldn’t pass, so I put them on. This gave me much more power and sounds great. I was getting real bad popping on deceleration so I turned the pilot screws out ¼ turn. The popping is still there some, but not bad at all. Now the bike runs great, I had it out for a couple hours today and it was flawless. I can even be in 5th gear at 60 mph and when I accelerate it just goes. Before it would shake and hammer very bad. I am now very happy with this machine and look forward to the next time I get to ride it. I’m don’t know if something else is wrong because the high RPM carb sync is what fixed most of the problem. I have purchased a colortune kit and will learn how to use it and maybe next spring I will try it on my bike. For now I’m just going to enjoy the rest of the riding season. I want to thank everyone for your suggestions and the time you spent to help me. V7Goose has been great both on this posting and the last one I had with the same problem, thanks V7Goose. -
I don't know if the same rules apply to bikes as cars. I totaled a chevy pickup, and after we settled I decided to buy it back from the insurance company. Because the title never changed ownership I kept the same title and repaired what needed to be to drive it. I sold it 5 years later and the new owner recieved my clean non salvaged title. If I had let the insurance company have it, they would have issued a salvaged title.

engine vibrations
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Darthandy, I have come across a few people that used to have a old Belair. Every time I have it outside a lady down the street comes down to talk with me about the good times she had. This car is very special to me as it belonged to my brother that was killed in a motorcycle accident. In his honor, I finished what he had started on the car and I have brought it to a few car shows. It is something I will always have and hopefully my son takes an interest in it. As far as my bike, maybe I am expecting too much from this engine. My last V4 was very smooth and powerful, I assumed this engine would be the same. I would think it should be able to hold its own speed at 75mph on a slight incline. The vibration is so bad I had to replace missing screws on my vacation. My HD buddies are going to have fun with that. Anyhow, V7Goose and Rick Haywood gave me some things to try. I hate to admit it but I like riding motorcycles more than working on them. I am a full time worker and college student, my semester starts in less than a month and I have other things I want to get done, so I may be putting this thing away for the winter. Or I may hire a mechanic, but I have never had good luck with mechanics. Thanks to all for all the suggestions and I will post whenever I find the results. -
engine vibrations
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks V7Goose. The diaphragms all looked good. I held them up to a light and slightly stretched them and found no holes. It did run better after cleaning the carbs. All the plugs did look identical, I didn’t notice anything unusual, but both sets I replaced were relatively new. I have not done anything with the mixture screws but would be interested in trying to adjust them. The plugs in it now have 4000 miles on them so I should check them to see if I see a difference. I did check the resistance of the coils per the manual and all 4 were within spec. I was thinking maybe one of the plug wires could be broken and making contact some of the time. I forgot to mention during the trip I plugged the AIS and capped the vacuum ports. I also tried running 91 octane but neither did anything so I went back to 87. The AIS is still disconnected. -
Last fall I had joined this site to get help with a problem and learn more about my new to me 2004 RSV. I had a problem with my RSV stumbling under a load and V7Goose gave me great advice on cleaning the carburetors and synchronizing the carburetors. I thought I had things working well, so I set out on a 3700 mile trip. On my way out things seemed good but after a couple days the problem returned. The engine vibrates badly under a load. This problem comes and goes; sometimes it would run ok and then others very bad. Most of my trip was at higher altitude and I thought maybe my problem was associated with that but it still did it on the way home. It acted worse in the heat but sometimes it would run ok in the heat. I ran in some rain and hail but most of the trip was dry. In 4th gear at 60mph it will still vibrate and in 5th gear at 70mph it vibrates if I ask for power. At 75mph trying to climb a slight grade on the expressway it struggles to maintain speed. This is a list of what I have done before the trip. 1) Removed carbs and cleaned 2) New spark plugs – twice 3) New spark plug caps – NGK only 5K ohms 4) Carb sync 5) Sea foam through tank. 6) New K&N air filters 7) New fuel filter If someone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I really do like this bike, but this power plant I am unsure about. I may have never had it running good as I have never been impressed with the power, but my last bike was a GL1500 and that is what I am comparing it to. If I could just get this thing to run smooth I could deal with the fact it is less powerful than my old GL. Thanks in advance

thanks everyone, I just got off the phone with a friend that rides a 06 RSV and he hasn't used his stock shield for years so he gave me a good deal on it. I will try once again to cut it down but I will not polish it again. -
I just ruined my windshield
54chevybelair replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
thanks for the replies everyone. I took the advice "I have nothing to loose" and I lost. Now I MUST buy a new shield. I tried heat and things didn't go so well. The show chrome windshield is 1" taller than the one I cut but wider as most of you already know. I am short so I will be looking through it. I am open to suggestions as I need to order soon. I don't mind looking through as long as I can sit straight up and look over it, that was what I was trying to achieve. -

Today I cut down my stock windshield to 12". I was very happy with the height on my test ride, I looked through it but could still sit up higher and look over it for the rain. I then decided to try and buff the scratches out of it and it seems there is a film on it that I ruined. Now the shield is useless. Has anyone had any luck looking through the show chrome shield, is it clear enough. Kinda frustraited now, but I have no choice but to find a new shield. -

I thought about putting a vent in the stock shield, but it is scratched and very hard to see through in th rain. I also think the wider shield would be better for my wife. I would really like a shield I could see over but I think my wife would hate it.

Hello all, I have a 2004 RSV and I really want a windshield with a vent. I am very short at 5'6" and I'm tired of windshields that are so tall (for me). My wife is the same size I am, Do you think she would still be protected from head buffeting with the medium clearview. Does anyone have this size with a passenger. This shield is 3" shorter than stock, but 4" wider.
