  1. davecb I have noticed the same thing. I have only had my 08 RSTD for about 6k miles. Got it w 4k on it and immediately did the service and oil change w Castrol synthetic. My bike did not like that oil but I stuck with it not knowing as much about this issue as I do now. As I got to about 7k the chirp/whine got REALLY loud. The weather also started to get 90+ here in Texas so it was hard to say which had a bigger part. At 8k service and oil change I went with Rotella 15W-40. Within about 200-300 miles the whine was gone, but the chirp remained. After 3 trips to my local dealership to see about an I-basket swap, the dealership felt it was a final drive (rear end) issue and not a clutch issue. Two trips and a call to Yamaha yielded that there was a "message" out about improperly installed spacers in the final drive housing. Mine was found to have this issue. The tech pulled mine apart, found the grommets that hold the spacers were not seated correctly, liberally lubed everything and put it all back together. I have only been riding it for about 150 miles since the "fix", but so far all the whine and chirp is gone. Also the temperature has peaked here at 100+ . I will admit to being very skeptical about this having been a final drive issue as I would have bet real money the sound was coming from right under me and not behind me, but am both humbled and happy with the outcome...............so far. :fingers-crossed-emo:fingers-crossed-emo:dancefool::dancefool::thumbsup2:
  2. They work great. I am a BIG fan of Skull Candy. I have been using them for 2 years now. I commute 70 miles round trip and use my 08 RSTD as my primary means of transportation. They truely are both an ear plug and a music speaker. I use them with both my old GMax G68 full face and my new Shark Evoline modular.

That was great! I have goose bumps and tears! Thanks for sharing. Nico
  4. I will plan on having the rear drive and splines lubed at the 8k service next month. Thanks for the tip!
  5. Ok, I know this subject has been written about many times. Please trust that I have read many posts on the whine. My issue does seem to be a bit different than the others I have read, so here goes. I have a 08 RSTD. Bought it used last November and loved it from the first time I sat on it. Had a 04 BMW R1150RT that I never did never "clicked" with. Not the RSTD, it was love at first ride. I read as much as I could find on the whine as soon as I joined VentureRider. After getting what I think is a pretty good understanding of the whine I concluded that I did, in fact have it, though not bad at all. I would say, like many that have written here before, I would not have noticed it without reading about it. A “George Jettson Car sound” from start to stop, nothing else. I rode through the fall, into the winter (God Bless Texas) and finally spring. Now this is the warmest it has been since I owed the bike. As soon as the weather hit 70+ degrees it started. Between 39-42 mph (by my GPS, not Speedo) I now have a deafening Howl! This sounds nothing like the whine. It is of a frequency that seems to go right through my earplugs and into my skull. Ok, ok, it’s only between 39-42 mph, right? I can easily drive around that. Sure, no problem. Forward a few more weeks. Now it’s 80+ degrees and I still have the 39-42 mph issue and now have added 60-65 mph. Same sound, a howl that it comes from nowhere and drives me NUTS! This cannot stay. I am more than happy to take it in and have the clutch replaced. It just doesn’t seem to quite fit the classic “whine” scenario. Now for some background facts: The bike now has 7500 miles. The oil is Castrol Dino 20W-50 No Motorkote or any other additives. It not the tires because the howl stops as soon as pull in the clutch The bike had its 4k service last Nov. The howl didn’t start till spring What do you learned gentlemen and gentle ladies think the issue is? :confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24:
  6. I've had a Gmax full face and a Bell half helmet. The were both good, but I wanted one that could change with the temperatures. Here in Texas it can be 40 in the morning and 70 in the afternoon. So, after much searching, I recently bought a Shark Evoline Series 2 Wayer. It's major function is that the chin bar will rotate 180 degrees around and lock in place. This allows it to be either a full face, or 3/4 helmet. It meets DOT and ECE safety standards both open and closed. It also has an internal sun shield. Sun shield is a good name as it is a poor replacement for sunglasses. I wear sunglasses (they fit fine) and use the sun shield when I'm riding into the sun (this works VERY well). I paid $ 390.00 at Revilla.com, but am really pleased with it. You'll have to cut and paste the link. I can't get all of it to hilight. 7. I've read many testimonials about leveling links, but don't understand exactly what they do? Could someone please enlighten me? BTW, I have an 08 RSTD, are leveling links a useful mod on them? Thanks for your patience and help. Nico
  8. Two Bells ordered and money sent. Thanks Don! Nico
  9. Count me as a Utopia fan. I rode another RSTD with the full Mustang setup and really liked it, but it priced out at $600.00 plus I looked for something else. My bike is an 08 RSTD with the stock seat. Last time I checked I was 5'11". The Utopia was VERY easy to install and as others have said, it is fully adjustable: up/down and forward/backward. The fold-down feature makes it nice for getting on and off. At $175.00 plus shipping, it is hard to beat. Nico
  10. Good Luck and safe trip. I live just off I-35W in FTW if you need a hand, or place to stay. Nico
  11. After reflecting on my wife and all that she puts up with me and my bike....................... LUCKY!:banana:
  12. 23. And I admit some answers were group consensus.
  13. My 08 RSTD came with a VERY cutdown windscreen (7+ inches shorter). When I first rode it with a half helmet there was no issue with buffeting. As the temperature dropped I switched to a full-face. BIG problem! Anything over 65 mph and my head got knocked around so bad I couldn't focus. I bought a used stock windscreen from ebay and BOOM, problem solved, though I do look thru the top of the windscreen. If I strain, I can see over it (I am 5' 11"). So I guess my point is two-fold: check your helmet type, and consider looking through the windscreen. HTH Nico
  14. I would like to be put on the list. Thanks, Nico
  15. Thanks to all for your help in clearing this up. I also found an entire college degree in oil from http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/. After all of this I am really lamenting the money I've wasted on 3k oil changes and M/C 4t oil when I could have used something else and a longer interval. We live, we learn. Thanks again Nico
  16. Great Bike! I am am interested in a Clearview myself. After a few miles can you let me know how you like it?
  17. Currently full tim National Guard in the DFW area.
  18. First I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to share their ideas and experiences. I am a new (to me) 08 RSTD owner. I have read with great enthusiasm the many posts about engine oil here. My question is: Are the different engine oils talked about here assumed to be motorcycle oil, or regular engine oil? For that matter, what IS the difference between motorcycle and engine oil (other than about $4.00 a quart)? Thanks again for having such a great place to share ideas and gain information. Nico
  19. I went for a quick ride yesterday with the temperature at 60. I felt enough to want in on this. Thanks Buddy!
