Handling problem
camos replied to VENTUREMAX's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What you say is probably correct jasonm if done by a machinist or an experienced mechanic and under some circumstances by us ordinary bikers. What I was trying to say is I have seen more than a few instances when ordinary guys have said they had checked the front wheel and it seemed alright only to eventually pull the wheel and find the bearings were definitely gone. This is just a heads up for some of us that when something is not working correctly and nothing wrong can be found deeper investigation is required. In this case, pull the wheel and check the bearings.- 26 replies

When I installed my 55w fog lights, the relay was powered from the front turn signal circuit so the fogs go off when the ignition is off. I did run the fog circuit through a switch as well so I had the option of turning them off independently.

Handling problem
camos replied to VENTUREMAX's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Another thing to check is the front wheel bearings by taking the wheel off and visually checking. If nothing else, adding some grease would be a good thing. I have seen several reports where a bit of a wobble was present while riding but no other indication there was a problem with the bearings like being able to move the wheel by hand, a squealing sound or flaky braking.- 26 replies

Alternative Fairing styles
camos replied to Sandbagger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Bobby, I'm with yuh, I don't go to the corner store without gearing up. It can be a PITA but bad things happen to good people all the time. I have no intention of leaving bits and bobs (no pun, honestly. ) of my birthday suit scattered down the pavement.- 24 replies

I've pretty much made up my mind to put some floorboards on and farther ahead than the stock pegs. Try this site: http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/index.php

So it seems there are issues with both feet under and feet forward positions and perfection is unattainable. Reminds me of my life. Looks like there are compromises that will have to be made to get things sorted out to get my VR fit me the best. Having my thoughts confirmed by actual experience is priceless though. Thanks to you all for your input.

That's how I feel too. Exactly where I'm at except a Gen2 is not in my future so gonna try modding the Gen1 to fit. Just have to sort out the best options first which is what prompted me to start this thread and pick your brains.

I'm 6'3" with a 34" inseam so the Gen1 is cramped for me as it comes which is the reason for this thread. Can't afford a Gen2, like the retro look but don't like the batwing type fairing. Sometimes it seems very difficult to be me.

That's me too, are we related? Mostly I like my feet about half way between under me and stretched out but find myself in a jockey position when getting seriously into it. Not into touring, commuting and day trips is more my thing. Been thinking of some longish floorboards that will cover both positions. Got any pix of the risers? I lifted the bars on my Virago a few inches so I could turn the buckhorns down a bit and find them absolutely perfect for me. On the VR to get that position the bars foul either the mirrors or the tank so they gotta get lifted too.

Hard Up-Shifting (Clunky)
camos replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You don't mention lubricating the linkage heim joints, that is the most common cause of stiff or even jamming shifts. Having said that, I'm trying to remember if the Venture even has those kind of joints. Mine is not rideable yet and just this morning I experienced rather difficult shifting on my Virago after a couple of days rain so time to work some grease in there. -
I know the two bikes are different but it is not apples to oranges, in my opinion anyway. It's about the comfort of one versus the comfort of the other. I have no opportunity to ride a G2 at all, never mind for 2 or 3 hours so your experienced comparison is exactly what I was after... and anybody else's who may have touring experience on both. Comparing the seating of both generations of Venture and also against that of sport touring bikes is the goal, to possibly get an understanding of which is the most comfortable. Can't remember for sure but I think there are several members on here who have some kind of sport touring bike as well. I'm on the tall side and find the seating position of my 90 VR a bit cramped so I've been thinking of moving the controls forward this Winter but perhaps I should be moving them back a bit instead. The other alternative is to leave it alone , suck it up and stop whining. Would be good to get it sorted out before doing the wrong thing, if ya know what I mean. Thanks Squidley.

Been wondering for a while whether feet forward or feet under would be more comfortable for touring. I've seen quite a number of comments that Gen 2 are more comfortable than Gen 1. In what way are they more comfortable? There are a lot of people who have gone from Cruiser style forward controls to Sport Touring bikes with controls under or even further back than Gen 1 and find them better. Seems to me sitting with your weight more on your thighs would be more comfortable than with it on your tailbone. This is a serious question and not intended to stir up any controversy. Of course, a little controversy is always a bonus.

Does anyone else have these problems?
camos replied to SpaceMan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not too sure this relates to your #4 problem but thought I'd throw it out for consideration. When I first got my Virago when driving a straight line down the road the handlebars were not centred. More of an annoyance than a problem as the bike still steered where I wanted to go. Got a couple of straight 2x4's to make sure the front wheel was aligned with the back wheel and found the handlebars were out about 1/2". Loosened the tripletree fork clamps, straddled the front wheel and torqued the handlebars until they were square with the wheel. Tightened the clamps and no more annoyance. Doing that is probably a bit more difficult on a Venture though. If your problem is the same as the one I had then I would think the fairing being attached to the handlebars (yes/no?) would also be out a bit which would be fairly noticeable. -
You can use Apple's free iTunes to get songs onto your computer from a CD. Just save them in MP3 format then upload to your MP3 player. There are others of course but that is the one I use on my media centre for playing music. Publishing music is about making money. Free downloads do not make money for anyone. I am doubtful there are any free music sites that will not have the potential to get you into trouble. There is quite a selection of "free" music on torrent peer to peer sites. If you don't know about torrents, just google "torrents" to get a handle on them.

Headlight Upgrade
camos replied to Locomotive's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On the highway, those really white lights coming at me are at the best annoying and at the worst blinding. I don't like them and as a result don't think I should be putting them on and doing the same to someone else. Been thinking about trying the ones below but have been kinda stalling since the reviewers both mention them being best for inclement weather. Anyone have any experience or even an opinion on the yellow lights? The Ion Crystal puts out an amber/yellow light that's less reflective than white light to greatly reduce the amount of glare in extreme fog or blizzard-like conditions. Greater definition in snow makes this a superior snowmobile headlight bulb. Bulb Type: H4 Anti-Vibration Wattage: 60/55W=110/100W Color Temp: 2500 Kelvin -
Indian regulator/rectifier group buy
camos replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
To prevent that kind of thing from happening in the future you could go into your profile and set the sort option to have the latest post at the top of the thread. About the only down side I have found is :sign yeah that:points the wrong way. Something I was thinking about the other day and just thought it might be a useful point to throw out for consideration. This GB had two threads going for a while which was a bit confusing. Could there be a separate forum for GB's to take place? Might make it easier to track them. -
Battery for first gen?
camos replied to elag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is the first thing that should be done when experiencing any possible electrical malfunction before chasing individual components. The stock wiring is adequate only if all connections are functioning well. Adding a second or more grounds could help but is essentially just treating a symptom that could also be treated by cleaning the original. Upgrading to a larger wire gauge is definitely a good idea but is not necessary and what it mostly does is give clean connections which can be attained without spending any money. I can't remember the number of times I have seen people chasing/replacing "faulty" components like plugs, coils, carbs, stator, R/R and the TCI with no lasting solution to the problem. Eventually finding a bad connection to one of those components was the real culprit. Food for thought. -
Seems to me Ontario figures it is Canada and the rest of us are just mugs.

Battery for first gen?
camos replied to elag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
How long ago did you upgrade the cables. Seems like a case of corroded and/or dirty connections, not necessarily just from/to the battery. Go over the starter circuit, charging circuit, ignition circuit and TCI connectors with contact cleaner and a green scrubby. Put them back together and coat with dielectric grease or silicon spray. I would suggest doing that and checking the cells with a hydrometer before considering battery replacement. -
We all know it was a great idea you had Tim. Still a bummer to have it ripped off. Perhaps you are expecting too much from your lights. The beams from fog lamps mounted low are not meant to extend beyond the low beam and should actually be somewhat less. Fog lamps have a wide beam while driving lights have a narrow beam. Fog lights can be on all the time. Driving lights are not particularly good for near or side lighting and should be turned off with the high beams. Fog lamp aim at 25 feet measured down from installed height axis Up to 18" (46 cm) 1.5" (38 mm) 18.5" to 28" (47-71 cm) 3" (76 mm) 28.5" or higher (72 cm) 4" (102 mm) axis = centre

I'd like to run amber fogs all the time too but wanted to be sure the Pilots would not be too much for the charging system to handle. If siliconed to waterproof them, how are the LEDs cooled? Looks like those amber ones throw an impressive amount of light. For me I definitely want a fog light pattern and I gather the projector lens focuses the light. If they started out as fogs then the same pattern should be maintained. This is a very cool project you have started here.

I have a set of 55w Pilot fogs on my Virago that I like and have been thinking of putting the same ones on my VR. There are no other electrical accessories on the Virago and the two @ 110w have not adversly affected the charging system for the past two months that they have been used but that is only at night. The Virago stator is rated at 16 amps, can't remember what the Venture stator is rated at. I'm still a bit leary about running them all the time on the Virago and the VR is not on the road yet. The Pilot fogs are H3s, what type of bulb can the LEDs replace?

I'm with you Ken, there have been studies that rate cell phone use equal to driving drunk. Even the hands off transmit is dangerous. I believe using a cell phone while driving should be grounds for losing your drivers license as it is for DUI. I wonder if intercoms would be rated similarly. That said, I don't own a cell phone but do occasionally wish I did. There is also the safety aspect of carrying one which makes it a good thing to have a long. Nothing like a couple of ambivalent statements to confuse things eh?

Indian regulator/rectifier group buy
camos replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I wondered about sending the payment in US or Cdn funds but went with Cdn because the shipping was different. I did consider doing a conversion on the latest rate but since that could change in an hour or a day decided not to. For future group buys it might be a good idea for a US based organizer to give the costs delivered to Canada in US funds. Sorry to be bringing this up after the proverbial horse has gotten out of the barn.
