  1. thanks. i can't to ride. i am off work tuesday, so i may try to get out some. but i need to hit the hay so i can get some shut eye. dale in La
  2. If it checks out, barter till you can get it. you won't be disappointed. yes these bikes have some quirks, but everything has quirks. i love our RSV. just don't try to drive it a ditch. don't ask me how i know that! Dale in Louisiana
  3. i had seen a tag line that said if your hammer doesn't work, get a bigger one. in this case, that was true. I am amazed at how easily the crash bars can be moved around. Dale in La
  4. Ditto on the worn out. those tires have just seen their day. the condition is from all the mentioned circumstances gathered together in what you are holding & looking at. i check my tires often. i would rather spend a hundred bucks on a new tire than risk running a blowout on some defect or inflicted cut in the tread. at least you are swapping them out. Dale in La.
  5. about a week ago I started a thread after driving into the ditch. I want to thank saddlebum, eazyduzzit, 99silver, Yammer Dan, SteveP, Eck, Twenty7Delta, BigBoyinMS, Wes0778 for input, suggestions & wit. they made this fix go easier & quicker than if I had not had their input. they all worked. the RSV is back together & ready for a ride. If the rain would ease up a bit, i could take it for a test ride. i avoided having to make a claim on the insurance, plus i got to do some work i may not have gotten to other wise. Like i really needed that! anyway here are some pictures of the work involved. I will upgrade and add the crash bar brace - but that will be another day. that upgrade will be easy compared to this self inflicted work. I want to thank not only those who gave direction, but to everyone on this site. it is refreshing to have this community. now if we can just get to gathering. time is something there is just not enough of. Dale in Louisiana
  6. i had the same problem before digital cameras were so common. I first bought a book on how to take pictures. my fix was to put my Fujica film SLR camera body on my telecope. on my telescope i used a moon filter. then the camera delay & f stops came into play. i took many timed exposures and when developed, i knew what setting to use. it takes a lot of practice and with the use of a digital photography book, you should find your answer. 7. been through it so many times, it is no big deal. knowing where you are going & watching the signs are key factors in not having to drive aways so you can turn around & do it all over again. you watch for the person in the left most lane who needs to be in the right most lane with 4 lanes of traffice & 1/4 mile to do it. now that is an adventure. the guardian angel for that area must have been a former traffice cop!
  8. i don't currently have one up, but i have had as many as 4 saltwater tanks going at one time (almost 100 gallons total). my thoughts are to get the stored tank up & running. filtration for salt & fresh water run in parrallel, so all my thoughts pertain to taking care of both. i have always used the under gravel filter. sure you have to "vacuum" the rocks to keep the flow, but you are going to have maintenance & the under gravel filter is not that big a deal, remember that you don't have to have all the bottom used for under gravel, get a partial and run one bubble air tube. the hang on the back filters with the bio type wheels are very good. get one rated at least 50 % greater than your tank's water capacity. water quality is important. you need to remove waste byproducts somehow. there are 2 ways. one is mechanical - filters, and the second is nature - bugs in the water that live off the waste and the bugs that live off the bugs that live off the waste. doing a water change each quarter will keep these things in balance. there is now an addin when you are first filling your tank to add these bugs rather than waiting for the natural cycle to happen. getting good water is also helpful. bad water is cleaned by the stuff in your tank. so get distilled or reverse osmosis water as often as possible to lessen the work on your biological and mechanical filters. watch what your decorations are made of. the cheaper the decoration, the cheaper the material. some material will leach chemicals after a period of time. this will cause a change in water chemistry that in turn will make your fish sick if not kill them. the maintenance for a small tank is really not much less for a 30 gallon. also look into the automatic fish feeders. these are great for weekends and make feeding consistant, or help children who don't remember that feeding the fish is their responsibility. water temperature should be kept at a constant temp as well. if you run an air conditioner in the same room as the tank, the water should be at about the same temp. it takes longer for the water to change temps than air, but the winter is the key. when the season changes, you need to have a quality heater that you will adjust as the days get cooler that will keep the water the same temp as when the air conditioner was running. getting cool or warming up of water is not bad, it needs to be gradual. sudden water temp changes can kill fish or make them sick & then they die. there is a lot to be learned. a good book can help a lot. good luck. 9. glad you made it. once you get used to the heat, come across the river into S. Louisiana & add some humidity to that. hope you find work. we have a place on the texas side of toledo bend & make it there about 2 weekends out of 5. i have had family & friends in or around Houston for many many years. good luck. dale in La.
  10. It may take longer, as i want to do the upgrade and add the brace from the floorboard bracket to the crash bar. I will needs more stuff. but that can be added on later. Hmmm - decisions. i really want to get back on & ride.
  11. after searching for devcon plastic stuff, i found it is sold by distributors now, but is made by permatex. so i bought the permatex 2 part epoxy at wally world. i repaired the plastic parts last night & will work on the crash bar tonight. hopefully by Saturday afternoon i will have the bike re-assembled. i will post pics when the work is done. thanks for the input from everyone. Dale p.s.we will have the grandkids over the weekend plus a meeting half hour away, one way, so it may be sunday. you know how it goes.
  12. double to the not borrowing. i will buy what i need unless there is just no way around it.
  13. Man, i feel for you. we decided a several years ago to drive used vehicles and not wash them. no one parks near us. even family. my beatup 94 toyota little pick has no new dings or even a washme written in the dust in the many years i have owned it. We live in the country on 3 acres with rice fields all around us. my shotgun is always handy. our Yammy RSV is the most expensive vehicle we own.
  14. Oh, & to SilvrT's comment - i don't lend tools. if a buddy needs one, i come with it, do the work & bring my tool home. i learned long ago that there are those who don't take of my stuff like i take of my stuff. this a big soap box of mine - so i will stop here. Dale in Louisiana
  15. what i hate is when a socket drops off and lands it a spot too small for the hand to grab. I had this just happen. i could not find my 3 prong grab it tool - doh - so i taped a magnet to a stick & retrieved the wayward socket that way.
  16. Ok, that was the name - devcon. i did remember it correctly. however, wally's world had none, but they did have the JB stuff. I will get some of that tomorrow evening. i can kick myself for not getting some tonight after the meeting we went to. we did go to wally world & i picked some JB stuff off the shelf. then i put it back telling myself if it's not the right stuff, i will have another "what to do with this stuff" added to the collection i have of stuff bought that wasn't right. thanks to all who have contributed. fixing the broke pieces will be easy. getting all that stuf that tumbled out after i cut 20 or 30 zip ties holding God knows what in that tiny space in the cowling will be the challenge. dale. p.s. there were really only 3 0r 4 zip ties cut, it just seemed that way as each part removed led to another part to remove.
  17. also, i have a crack around one bolt hole on the black inside molding to be repaired as well as a broken bracket on the white outer cowling. i had read in another thread where there was a plastic welding stuff that would fix these plastic problems. does anyone remember the same thread? i believe the stuff was called devcon or similar and available at wally world. ring a bell? Dale
  18. I will do a bit of both, vise bend & kickem'. here are the closeups. it is hard to get in the pic the twist you see with you eye. i will probably do some vise work & then bolt on & kick into final position. howz that sound?
  19. I have insurance, yea. but when you use it, the rates go up. that is why i would rather fix this myself. Ok, so no heat - i have a pretty nice shop & one big azz vice that will handle the job plus the what ever wrench i will need. since it looks like about a final 2 inch difference to the outside, i will need to look at the right side to see if the bar ends are at a 90 degree angle to the bar itself. that way i will know when to stop bending. i will post closeup pics in a minute
  20. now i know the bar ends can be heated & straightened, but sometimes that process leaves a part weaker than when new. so my concern is whether or not I would have a strong enough part after heating & straightening. thanks for the forthcoming input. Dale
  21. i was making a right hand turn out of the driveway & for some strange reason, i could not turn tight enough and wound up on the other side of the road in the ditch. Pictures below. our driveway is asphalt & our road is gravel. this turn is always tough for me as i feel if i turn to tight, i will loose the front end to gravel slide. since i was in a turning position, i was in line with the ditch. i was able to get the front tire back on the road, but when the rear came up, the bike fell over on the left. i had messed up the lower cowling and the engine guard/crash bar was bent upwards cramming the highway peg against the floorboard which caught the gear shift. no room to lift the bike using the technique learned and used before as i had to stand in the ditch to lift. i had got my truck & was in the process of hooking up ratchet straps to assist me in lifting the bike when a neighbor came home & gave me a hand. what a pain. anyway i have the busted side of the bike taken apart. My question is - can i heat & straighten the bar ends that are bent, or should i replace them with used/new bars. i checked our classifieds & ebay, but nothing listed. If replacing is the better option, does someone have a left crash bar for sale that is not listed? i am over being embarrassed with myslef & Debbie came home for lunch & I told her, so I have bases covered. Dale in Louisiana p.s. - this really put us out of making the M & E in Biloxi, Ms.
  22. Well, we won't be able to make this meet. Debbie will be flying out Sunday. we really want to ride out & meet some of the folks. maybe another meet in the general vacinity will be scheduled that we can make. thanks SeaBeeTom for the invite & thanks Walter for the B & B tip. we'll keep the tip under the hat. Dale in La.
  23. thanks for the tip on the b&b, Walter. i will check into it as soon as we make a decision. Dale n Debbie.
  24. I would need to check with my better half, but it is a possibility for us. we are close to central Louisiana. we will need to make a reservation somewhere to stay the night. saturdays work for us in a case like this. we need sunday to get home for work on monday. Dale N Debbie
  25. there is a lot of info on GPS units here, just in different threads. at the top of the page near the logout button is the seach button. enter the letters GPS and it will bring you all the threads with the information you are looking for. cheers.
