  1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I could not get past the large nut in the center. so i could not get a good look behind it. i will add to my tools and get a gasket so i am ready when putting it back together. the shaft you mention, is that the one in the botton left of the clutch area? i had a hard time move the shifter and watching the shift fork move. i did mange to watch some movement. no slippage seen, but i was not knowing what i was watching for. i will have a better idea when completley apart. any tips removing the rest of the stuff?
  2. ok, i see that. now to find where the place in the manual where the info is to check the particular item. just got to search. thanks for the head start.
  3. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ thanks Lil B. i am back in the house to search on how to remove the engine cover. the pipe covers are in the way. there must be an easier way. i will check the fork information in the manual. i have it printed out & in a binder. finding stuff in it though is a chore in itself. i am getting frustrated & tryin to stay calm. i believe i will need those ball ended allen wrenches though. if that's the case, i will have to run 65 miles round trip to get some. later and thanks. no responses tells me i may have to go to the dealer.
  4. well, no suggestions so far. i am going to the shop and pull the cover off the enging and take a look see.
  5. some pictures can be found in this link - http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46195 page 2.
  6. i have been having trouble with my 04 RSV. I have been posting in the watering hole, but so far i have not found the problem. it has trouble shifting. clutch and its fluid checks out ok. the shifter linkage checks out ok. i pulled the middle gear cover off (left rear cover) and it checks out ok. thinking it was an engine oil level, oil was changed this started out of the blue. i parked the scooter after a ride when shifting was working properly, found a slow leak, ordered a new tire, put the tire on. went for a test ride. shifting up was fine and the trouble started upon my first down shift, it would not down shift. i could come to a stop and pound on the shifter getting back to first. then repeat. after a couple times of this, the shifter began to "flop" out of place. not left or right. when toeing up to 3rd, the shifter just kept moving upwards nearly 5 inches with no changing of gears. i would have to toe the down to get things back to an order where i could get home. coasting around corners does work too well and lugging around in the wrong gear is not the way to do things. any suggestions as to what is happening would be appreciated.
  7. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ that is what i was thinking after seeing all looked well. after getting it all bak together, i did some in place test shifting. here are 2 pics of the shifter "flop" that i get when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. it does this on the road or just sitting still and easing forward then shifting. hard as heck to get back to neutral. the pictures show how high the toe side gets and at the same time the heel side will drop below the floorboard if you try to shift to 3rd or 4th. i guess the next step is the transmission? any suggestions?
  8. the pin with the red arrow pointing at it seems to have marks indicating being in the hole located back side of the gear cover. the cover has no marks indicating rubbing elsewhere movement of that pin. does this appear to be in order to those who know what it is supposed to look like?
  9. took the gear cover off. i don't know what it is supposed to look like, but here are pictures of it. is anything out of place? I will be outside cleaning up oil. i will check back in a bit.
  10. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ that will be no problem. i should get to this saturday morning. i left the scooter on the lift. i won't do any work on it until i post the pic with the cover off.
  11. Ok, sounds good. come payday i will hit the classifieds.
  12. Earl, I would like to order a kit from you. i don't care what the time line is. i just want to know if you are still accepting orders.
  13. Tom, i was a bit spoiled when i bought the bike, the P.O. had done all the fluid changes, so all i had to do was crank it and go. now is the time my maintenance miles are due. i had noted in the last few rides before winter the shifting was a bit harder than before. the fluid does tell the tale.
  14. come to think of it, while i would ride, the heel toe shifter would flop out of place by an inch or so, then i would flip it opposite the flop and i could shift again. pivoting wrongly is the description i could not come up with. i will have to take a look see. besides pulling the bolts out and that little chrome piece that falls off, is there anything special to get the cover off?
  15. Ha , that's funny. green. i did have to laugh. it is a nice carmel color. well, i will change the fluid and pull that left aft cover to make sure all is where it's supposed to be. I have a feeling it is not from the way it is acting and the noise coming from it. I will post this weekend after i have a chance to work on it. from how nice it was today, we are in for a hot summer.
  16. Kbay, how easy is it to get something out of whack by loosening the middle gear cover (left side, back cover), starting it up and idleing, then remembering the cover was loose and then tightening it back down?
  17. how dark do you let yours get before changing it?
  18. Wonderful news, Squid. jus' wonderful. that is a feeling you never forget. wait for that first check and get some oil changing supplies for the scooter and spend some quality time under the fairing!!!!
  19. my clutch fluid was clear. i assumed it darkens with age, similar to engine oil as it is used. at some point, it gets changed. the shop manual states every 2 years. i guess i will just have to change it. has this darkening of clutch fluid happened to anyone else?
  20. prayers sent and ditto to all well wishes.
  21. i have checked what has been suggested and what i can see all is where it is supposed to be and doing what it should. the fluid is a medium colored carmel color and is full. not having worked on a bike in awhile, i could be missing something. on a stand, if i go from neutral through the gears (engine running) the tranny makes quite a bit of noise as i progress up to 4th. it made enough noise, i went back to neutral and turned it off. i changed the engine oil about 60 miles ago just after a rear tire change, which is good. I have been having shifting problems since. on a side note while changeing the engine oil and i don't remember why i was going to do this, but i loosened a cover to see what was behind it. the cover is on the left side, back one. i got the bolts loose, but the cover did not want to come off. i got distracted and wound up finishing the oil change. then i cranked the bike. while idling in neutral, i remembered that cover. it was barely oozing oil. i tightened up the bolts and cleaned the 2 drops of oil. I don't know what is behind that cover, but that may be my souce of trouble. any suggestions on adjustments? after i post this, i am gonna go to the stealer for clutch fluid in case changing the fluid is suggested. the previous owner used yama fluid for everything, so i know what to get. I will check this thread afterwhile.
  22. Don, thanks for putting this together. for those who don't have Microsoft office, there is a free to use excel viewer you can download and install. from there you can print it.
  23. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bob, i too, use the harbor freight chock. i have only used it a couple times, but it holds just fine. i am fortunate to have a HF store not far from here. i had a coupon plus it was on sale. i have about 32 bux in mine. if you get this one, use the bottom hole for the adjusting part of the chock. i have since taken that part off completely and just use tie downs after wedging in the front tire. having 3 wheels makes the chock's job of helping the uprighting of a 2 wheeler less of a concern.
  24. This is how i did the rear tire change on my 04 Venture. you don't have to pull the drive shaft to remove the tire. need to use Honda moly 60 on the axle and hub/splines after tire removal You need to have the lift adapt for your MC jack for the Venture and some tools. have the bike ready for lifting. before the bike is off the ground, remove the bags and the right hand exhaust. the left exhaust can be left on, but the job is easier with it off. the exhaust has one rear hanger bolt to remove and one pipe clamp to loosen, then it will slide off. remove the Brake caliper from the caliper bracket. you may need to press the pads in to remove it. remove the caliper bracket bolt. remove or loosen the frame pinch bolt. remove axle nut on the left side. remove the axle - this is easier said than done. you have the weight of the bike on the axle. start to raise the bike just a bit at a time. At some point, there is equilibrium and the axle will come out easier than having to beat it out from the left. Lube the axle just before you re-install it. remove the caliper bracket. there is a spacer/washer that comes out. It may fall out on its own when you remove the axle. make note of where the washer comes off so you can put it back in the same spot. look in the manual if you mess this part up on re-assembly. Wiggle the wheel off the splines and raise the bike enough to pull it out from the right. the wheel should not just fall off the hub. wait until the tire and rim are ready to go back on the bike before putting lube on rim side splines. This took awhile the first time as i was unfamiliar with this but I think I could remove and re-install the rear wheel in a half hour or so the next time. Make sure you well clean and then grease splines and the drive pins while the tire is off. I had the Yammy shop put the new tire on. Reverse the above steps to put the tire back on the bike. make sure the spacer washer is in the correct spot or you get to do double the work. it goes between the frame and caliper bracket. once it is all back together, pump the rear brake pedal to re pressurize the caliper if you pushed the pads in. I will tell you the first time I took mine off, I literally had to pound the axle out, it was dry with NO lube on it. Since it was my first time, it took about an hour's time. I made two errors on re-assembly and that used up about 30 extra minutes to re do and is not in the hour's work time. next time i should be able to do it in 30 minutes or so. I like to take my time and have everything i need, so i am not in a hurry.
