  1. I have an 87 Venture Standard that needs the aluminum engine covers polished, but I have to get the old, flaking, yellowed clearcoat off first. Once I get it off, I'll shine it up as best I can, then re-cover it with clearcoat. (spray can) Any suggestions?
  2. I've been wanting to do the same thing, using a gps with mp3 capability instead of an IPOd. I'd like to hear music, interrupted by gps directions, or by CB. I'd sure like to see a schematic of what you did. Sounds pretty cool.
  3. Thanks Y'all. Im not too worried about a stiffer clutch, I've got a pretty good grip so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm lookin' forward to this new clutch system....I hope it doesn't make me beat the bike up too much testing it out.
  4. I'm needing new clutches in my 87 standard...getting some slippage when I goose it a bit. I ordered a clutch kit and replacement spring from Buckeye Performance (nice people, fair prices). I spoke with Rick and asked him what I should do to get a little bit tougher clutch, and his suggestion was OEM clutches, and a new wave spring, suggesting that I double up the spring, new one on top of the old one to stiffen up the clutch. He warned that it'd make the lever stiffer, but didn't think it'd be a problem. He seemed to know what he was talkin' about, and I trust him, but I was just curious if anyone has tried this, and what the result was. I'm planning on setting it up to ride two up, sometimes with a trailer, and want a pretty solid clutch. Hopin' to get some input from someone who's been there, done that.
  5. I bought a similar cover for a 82 cb900 that I have, and can't say that I have any complaints. It's not very heavy, and I doubt it'll give me the life of an OEM cover, but for less than $20, whaddya want? I believe mine sold for .99 plus $18 shipping.
  6. Yippee! Thanks, Gene...I was thinking that you wouldn't be able to get around to it. I gave you the credit card info last fall, it should still be current, but if you have any issues gimme a call and we'll get you paid. Thanks again.
  7. Jersy: Thanks, but I was asking about the removable bags that are form fitting. At one time Beer30 was thinking about making some, but I think his business won't give him the time. I'll keep looking, eventually a set will turn up.
  8. Anyone know where I can get a set of these elusive liners for my '87?
  9. I'm in. That psychopath can't be allowed to get away with that kind of murderous, irresponsible behavior. What makes people do stuff like that? If you can get it together, I'd be happy to contribute.
  10. Can't get my rollin' 'till I get my floorboards back from the %&*@#$ chrome shop. I sent them in to get chromed last fall, and I'm to the point of calling every day to bug them. I've demanded my parts back, chromed or not, and the owner won't call me back, so I keep calling and talking to the secretary. I'm to the point where I'm going to have to file suit in small claims court...but I don't want it to come to that......I just want my stuff back. Avoid Blakleys polishing in Dayton, OH. Freebird: thanks for the offer, but I don't know what you can do..The story I keep getting is that my parts are still at the platers, as if Blakleys has no responsibility for my problem, even though they were happy to accept the required $100 deposit The thing that really bugs me is that they absolutely will not call me back, although they always promise to. I told them that, after this long, I just need my parts back, finished or not, and they won't give me any response other than, again, "they're still at the platers". I called them again today, and she said "maybe Monday".....I won't hold my breath. I'll keep calling them daily until I either get my parts back, or until I finally decide to file suit. It wouldn't be so bad except that a set of driver floorboards are pretty hard to find for a first gen. Thanks again, I'll post if I get them back.
  11. Hey Gene, any word on when you can start making the first gen trunk and saddlebag liners?
  12. I used to live in Key Largo, working on the mainland (Homestead). There were a few days each year when on the stretch between Homestead and Key Largo, these birds would dive on the bugs around US1, making it a pretty hairy ride on a bike. I hit/killed three on one trip down "the stretch". Not much you can do but keep your head down and hope for the best. I used to love riding down to Key West, but was back there a few years ago in a cage and was dissapointed when I saw how much traffic there is now. I'm sure I'll ride down there again in the not too distant future. This Ohio weather's gettin' old.
  13. Anybody know where I can find some?
  14. Where abouts is your camp? I've got a place near Sinnemahoning, about 40 miles South East of St. Marys.....Cameron County....Beautiful area.
  15. My 88 slips, ( I'll be changing clutches and upgrading to coil springs this winter)...but it can be kinda tempremental as to when and where it slips. Sometimes I can't make it slip, and sometimes it slips in some gears, and not others, on bad days I can make it slip in any gear. I'm sure a clutch change will cure the issue for both of us. Anybody out there have barnett clutches and coil springs????? and if so, how do ya like'm?
  16. Thanks for the responses, I'll end up giving one or the other a call, being sure to note the reference. I may well end up going with polishing instead of chroming, but am concerned about premature tarnishing, which I believe can be prevented with clearcoat, but am wondering about my floorboards. Some of the original chrome is peeled. Can these still be polished, or is rechroming the only option, considering that the remaining chrome would first have to be stripped for polishing. ????
  17. Seems like when I was a kid working on one of my old so-called "hot rods", that it was no problem to drop parts off at one of the two local shops that did chromework to get them prettied up a bit. I'd like to get the engine covers and a set of floorboards chromed, but have found that the shops that used to do this work have seemingly all dried up.....I'm told that our friends at the EPA have shut'em down because of the toxic chemicals used in the process. In any case, I'd sure like to find a place that I can send my parts to get chromed. Anyone out there have a shop they'd recommend? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. 88 Venture newbie.
  18. It's relatively inexpensive to file a suit in small claims court...no lawyer necessary. Once the dealership gets the summons, they'll have to take action to get your parts back, as I don't see that they have a defense. Like I said, once they get that summons, they'll hop to action, and if they settle with you before the court date, you can cancel. Best of luck.
  19. ....To Me!..... If you think it's worth your time to take it off and sell it separately, I'd be interested. I've been looking for a decent used hitch for my 88.
  20. I spoke with him over the phone for a while this morning. Ordered a set of liners (bags) from him. It didn't seem that anything was out of the ordinary, so I'm sure he's fine. He's an interesting fellow.
  21. Found a nice set of floorboards and shifter for a 99 Royal star....how tough would it be to adapt them to my 88 Venture? I'm pretty good at adapting and fabricating things like that, but with the shifter and brake assemblies, it seems like it'd be a tough job. Anyone out there with enough knowledge of both bikes to offer an opinion? Thanks:banana:
  22. My problem isn't getting it up on the centerstand, but rather getting it back down. It tends to skip across the floor if I try to bump it off the centerstand while sitting on it. I usually have to dismount, then keep my foot on the centerstand footpad to get the bike back down. (Maybe the concrete floor is too smooth, slippery)? In any case, I've not had a problem rocking it up onto the stand....just takes a bit of ummmphhhhh! Best of luck.
  23. How do. I"m a newbie, but so far luvin' my 88 royale. I was given only one key with it, and since it's not the original, I don't have the key code. (Not written down in the manual either). Is there another way to find the key code? ....Can I get duplicates cut at the dealership? Knowing my history with keys, I don't wanna wait too long to get a couple of duplicates. Great site, seems to be a real family of members here. Update: I went to key-men.com and they were able to make duplicates from a scan of the key I have. It's a bit pricey at $13 per key, but I felt it was well worth it for the convenience of simply scanning my key and sending it to them. Thanks everyone for the input!
