  2. Hi Larry, Nice bike, What would you be asking for her? Earl and jean
  3. Hey John, Congrats on the new job! You are very lucky to have family in the town where you will be working. I recently left Lockheed-Martin after 20+ years for a job a lot closer to home as well. I was traveling 45 miles each way. The work is harder, the hours are longer, by I am saving a ton on gas! I wish you all the best on your new job!! Best Wishes, Earl and Jean
  4. Hi Andrew, Both Jean and I are glad to hear that you were not to badly beat up during your accident. I can't believe that Yamaha has not addressed the rear brake lock-up problem with the second gens. I know all to well that sick feeling in the pit of your gut every time you look at your scoot, Rest and heal and as time and funds permit, replace or repair the damaged parts and soon all will be well again. Prayers sent for a speedy recovery, Earl and Jean
  5. Hi Fozzy, Well, it's funny you should ask about that! I pryed the reflector loose very carefully with a butter knife (boy was Jean mad!) the LED light bar I put in there has really small wires, I think 18 gage. I drilled 1 3/16 inch hole and was able to power the running light LED bar and the brake light LED bar thru the one hole. Both light strips mounted with double sticky tape and there are no sockets to mount as used with the regular 194 bulbs that are in behind the rear turn signal lenses for example. I used clear silicone sealer to hold the reflector in place. When I was done, the install looked pretty clean. Hope this answeres your question, Earl Padavej, Glad to see a gent from Va. rooting for someone other than the "Deadskins" nice scoot by the way! Earl
  6. Hi Scott,

Sorry it took so long to answer you, I work second shift. with over 73,000 miles on my 87' VR I have never heard a loud whine on the decel. The First Gens. do have a lot more tranny noise than my 1100 Honda V65 Magna. When you had it on the center stand was the noise comming from the back of the engine, tranny area or was it comming from the drive shaft, rear end area? Off the top of my head, If the noise is in the tranny area, try an oil and filter change. If the noise is in the rear end area, then drain and refill the rear end lube. There is also another problem area in the rear and that is the splines that are on the end of the drive shaft that mate to the rear Ring Gear. That is a much bigger job and requires removing the rear wheel and seperating the drive shaft from the rear end to grease the splines. I usually do this when I replace the rear tire. I have never had the dry spline problem myself, but most say it is a noisy affair that leads to damage to the DS splines and rear Ring Gear. Not hearing the noise myself, It is hard to say if what you are describing is "normal noise" or something worse. If it has been a while or the bike is pretty new to you, you may want to take care of the Items listed above and see if there is some improvment. Or we could meet up somewhere, switch bikes and see if the noise is the same on mine. Keep me posted on what you would like to do and I will help any way I can.

    Ride safe,

    Earl

    LED LIGHTING UPGRADE!

THESE PICTURES SHOW HOW I UPGRADED MY LIGHTS TO LED'S. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TURN SIGNALS TO FUNCTION PROPERLY BY ADDING 4 LOAD RESISTORS. I ALSO ADDED A "BLUE DOT" TAIL LIGHT LENS.
  8. Hi All, As I posted earlier, I work night shift and as I was comming home from work I was almost rearended by a Ford F250 while I waited for a light to change. It got me to thinking how could I make myself more visible for other drivers. I started to work changing all of my lighting to LED's. I also added some more lights. Because of the electronic flashers the first gens. have, I had to add Load Resistors to the 4 turn signal lights to get them to flash properly. I changed all of the 1157, 1156, and 194 bulbs to LED's and added 2 LED light bars to the rear as well as a blue dot tail light lens. the Load Resistors get really hot so I mounted them on metal brackets to isolate them from the plastic of the bike. I have enclosed pics of the upgrade, If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. Ride Safe and Bee Seen, Earl and Jean.
  9. Just got my new bbq grill home, wadda' think!?!? Bbq safe, earl and jean
  10. Hey Jeremy, Sorry to hear about your 87'. I have an 86' V65 magna as well as an 87' VR and while riding the V65 at the beginning of the summer I went to pick up Jean (co-pilot) at work and when I pulled into the parking lot I noticed that it was freshly paved and I thought "wow, this is nice and smooth" I got off my bike, covered it and went inside to wait for Jean. When I came outside, I was horrorified to see the bike on it's side! I pulled off the cover and saw that the kickstand had sunk into the pavement! Every time the wind would blow, the bike would pivot on the kickstand, it scuffed up the seat, sidecover, muffler and the handlegrip. I was so bumbed I almost called a cab! After the accident, I was so mad I decided to redo the seat, bought another side cover and handlegrip and Installed headers on the bike. It looked really great after that, But I found that I didn't use the cover nearly as much after that. Also I stay away from fresh pavement now! I hope this spures you to make your 87' look even better than before! Good Luck on the repairs, Earl
  11. Hey Rick, I have a cruse control panel from an 87' VR that is fully functional with a very slight crack where the screw connects the panel to the handle bars that is yours for the postage! I will need your address to send it on it's way. I have not done the swap you are talking about, but did replace my cruse control unit to spiff up my bike a bit. this CC unit has all of the lights, the power switch as well as the 5 pin female connector! If you can use this part just let me know. Good luck on your project! Ride Safe, Earl
  12. Hi Scott,

Welcome to the VR family. I live near Altoona, I understand you live near Greensburg, perhaps we can take a ride sometime. I have an 87' VR, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Best of luck with your new bike,

    Earl

  13. This is the ghost of GEORGE S telling everyone to "clean all of your connectors!":crackup::crackup: Just Kidding, Ride Safe, Earl and Jean
  14. Hi Jack, Been there, done that as well! 16 years, Believe me, It's her LOSS! My Jean is 10 times the woman my X was! My dad always said "boy, if it don't kill ya', it will make you stronger!" IMHO, Keep the bike, throw the X to the curb! Hang tuff, Earl and Jean
  15. Hey Squid, Floating rotors are actually a two piece set-up that a lot of sport bike riders run on their R1's and R6's. There is the "hub" section which attaches to the front or rear wheel and the "caliper contact area" which is the surface the brake pads come in contact with. (see attached thumnail) I have been working on modifying a set of R1 floating Rotors and Calipers for my 87' VR, when I'm done I'll post the results on the VR site. The biggest benifit of the floating rotors is they don't warp from repeated high speed stops like the one piece rotors that come stock on the VR's and RSV"s. I'll keep you posted as to the results, Ride Safe, Earl
