  1. Great part of being the old guy. You don't have to care anymore. Its also the the fun part of outdoing the youngens at work, I don't have to. Drives em crazy when the gray headed Captain makes a job they're struggling with look easy. Experience and letting the tools do all the work. Then when the Dept chief sees me outdo them he really likes to rub it in. I run the oldest crew on the Dept. The youngest guy on my truck is 47, I love it when we do an all station training and my guys shine. All those 20-30 yr olds will sweat like crazy trying to do the brawn over brains techniques. We're more the smarter not harder thinking guys. It shows on fire scenes too. Some are starting to understand and listen when we teach them something. Wow I'm starting to sound like my dad. :soapbox: The older I get the smarter he was
  2. Funny you mention that. Those same guys call me a freak of nature when it comes to the muscle work. I eat beef and pork, never lift weights, and out work them. They eat fish and chicken and lift daily. They just don't understand muscle and experience earned from years of hard work trump large muscles from a weight bench. They lift a few reps of heavy weight which gives them bulk but no practical use. I'm not unusual for our generation, they just don't get the experience thing.
  3. Everybody is in a rush nowadays, with cell technology most people think it's unacceptable to leave a message you get when you get home. Everything is within reach of your thumbs on a screen. Heck some can't even pull into a drive through to order coffee, there's an app for that. Order it, pay for it, all before you get to the place. I still go into the bank to deposit or cash checks and use cash to buy things inside real stores. I'm one of two people left at work to draw a real check, city's been trying to make me go direct deposit for years. I won't use drive throughs and I listen to a radio station that regularly plays Jerry's Mr. Ford. Guy's at work make fun of me for being a dinosaur, funny part is none of those young electronically connected soft firefighters can outwork us Dino's when it hits the fan on a bad hot one. Having said that I did have to stoop so low to hook a phone up to the bike, if the customer ain't happy the business won't work. That is one of my few concessions to the craziness of this "new" world we live in.
  4. Yes the resister is required. The Skydoc kit has it already in the wire. You just connect it at each end. Just make sure you hook into a circuit controlled by the key switch.
  5. I miss those old ways. Nowadays as the owner of the business dealing with schools all over the country I'm expected to answer any and all questions RIGHT NOW. I'm working on training some new people to take some of the load off me now. Until then it's either answer on the go or not go at all.
  6. The idea is to be able to make/take phone calls thru the helmet sets plugged into the bike. Right now the only way I know to do that is with a Garmin and a splitter cable. With having kids and running a business I can't take off for days without being reachable all the time. I have a hardwired Bluetooth receiver in it for music.
  7. I have an electronics guru friend working on a new Bluetooth set that may possibly let us link the phone in without using a GPS. The idea is start with a Bluetooth adapter like those that plug into a car stereo with a remote mic. In my simple mind I'd think a plug could be connected in place of the mic so the Buddy Rich cable could connect there. Sounds simple to me but I know squat about electronics. Has anyone here tried it? Would there be enough interest in it for him to produce them? If the test works we are looking to make it able to be hard wired inside the fairing with no batteries to deal with. I like the idea of getting rid of the GPS and cleaning up the bars. I use my phone app anyway and only have the Garmin for the phone interface.
  8. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?489-Battery-Warning-Bypass Here is the link to kill the battery light. It's a fairly easy fix, one of the first things I did to my 86. Well worth the effort.
  9. As they get older and more miles on em it's harder to get their motors running.
  10. I rapped the end of the center bolt a couple hits, then tightened again, and again. Shock vibrations popped it off. I also tied a rope from the puller to the frame so it didn't launch. Don't beat on it with a BFH, just a decent pop. Like The Beach Boys said: good vibrations.
  11. We've got a bet to settle at MD Dan.
  12. Everything is hardwired through the factory audio system. I failed to mention that I have another 12v plug under the seat to charge phones, with the GPS plugged in there it clears up and sounds great. Wiggling the plug in the fairing charge port changes the sound. It may be just the loose connection of plug to port but I think I want to separate the circuits to be sure. Thanks for info.
  13. Just a little background, I have installed an ignition bypass, Bluetooth receiver, Edset's splitter, amplirider, and mic mutes. I used the small connector by the battery for the mic mutes, and jumped the Bluetooth receiver and amplirider off the power outlet in the fairing. The problem is with the GPS running I get electrical noise in the headsets. Unplug the GPS and it goes away. I'm assuming the problem being the power for the amplirider and Bluetooth needs to be separated from the charger port. The question is can I steal a power wire from the cassette player to power them or do I need to install another relay from the battery and use the key acc to kick it in? The issue didn't start until I installed the amplirider. Both the amp and mic mutes are new, the rest I've had a while with no problem. Oh yeah it my 07 RSV Second question any ideas on a mount for the amplirider volume switch?
  14. They both need lots of shiny expensive stuff.
  15. We haven't had a good football program in several years now. I'm hoping they'll get back on track soon. Murray had the same history with football coaches years ago. Gottfried, Beamer, Zook and more. I don't know how we've attracted so many young coaches that go ahead with huge careers. My wife and oldest daughter are both alumni, pretty nice to have a local quality school. Campus is only 10 minutes from home.
  16. I finally got to lay eyes on one yesterday in Nashville. Great looking bike, did set on it and raised off the stand, it balanced well. I messed around with it 20-30 minutes without a salesman so much as saying hi so we left. Wasn't looking to buy it but was shopping for gear for the wife, we went elsewhere. I'll look again in a few years after the kinks get worked out of them.
  17. Once the bolt is out douse the shaft with penetrating oil, attach the puller and tighten it. Use a decent size hammer and give the puller bolt a few sharp raps, tighten it a little more and repeat. Keep repeating. Had mine off my 86 in 10 minutes.
  18. No I missed most of the game, listened to it on the bike while running errands. Got to see the first few minutes and the last 3 minutes (last 3 without sound). If one of ours did an intentional shot to the nuts then some level of sportsmanship is out the window and paybacks are expected. In all fairness since I didn't see the rest of the game I should not have mentioned it, sometimes paybacks are due and expected. I wasn't in the greatest of moods when I got home and did that, a guy up the road crossed in front of me in a one ton for what was probably the closest call I've ever had on a bike. Was pretty mad at the world at that time. But as an example in the OVC playoff game MSU was in a similar situation and dribbled out the play clock without trying to shoot, it is something I always like to see at all levels of sports. However as I said if paybacks are due then the gloves are off, sportsmanship has to go both ways. It's something I've strived for in coaching for years, give it all you got, play to win, do it respectfully, and with class. Right up until the opponent shows they don't deserve respect then pull out all stops. Never liked running up a score either unless it was a team that had done it to you in the past, paybacks are a B**ch but are effective. CONGRATS again to WVU definitely out played us.
  19. I had probably the closest call I've ever had today. Going through a T intersection at highway speed guy crossed from the side road in front of me into a driveway in a flat bed truck. He actually came looking for me about 15 minutes later to apologize, said he saw me but for some reason thought I was gonna turn. Mid 50s in age, no phone, just a brain fart. Really had to fight the rear locking up. I do have to take some responsibility as my speed MIGHT have been a wee bit excessive. Even coming out of the skid the bike handled great so there is that.
  20. Gotta give Carter props. He shut Stark down, he's usually a deadeye 3 point shooter. They're definitely not used to that physical of a game, OVC refs call much tighter, they got out muscled. Gotta say I thought refs called an even game (what little I got to see) they let them play without calling little stuff. Only thing I thought was out of line was the 3 ball with 2 seconds left. Back in my coaching days if we had a good lead last few seconds no player was allowed to shoot. It's a sportsmanship/class thing to me. Congrats to WVU, good luck in the dance. I'll get the coffee brewing:beer:
  21. There's one upset. Ready to see another.
