  1. I have a 2008 RSV and I am very frustrated with it right now. It has a little over 20,000 miles on it and this is my third set of tires. I have used Metzler 880's twice and now I am using Elite III's. After my tires get a few miles on them I get a front end wobble at low speeds. I talked to the local Yamaha dealer. After the mechanic showed me the cupping I put on new tires, front and back. Both times with the Metzler's the front tires were cupped. Each time I put on a new set it quit for a little while. It has started now with the Elite III's and they probably don't have 2000 miles on them and there is no sign of wear at all. With the Elite III's I used Nitrogen and balanced them with beads. I think the Nitrogen has really helped with the wear and I was hoping the beads would help with the wobbling. So far nothing seems to help. I have read about tightening the front bearing but that doesn't make sense to me if new tires fix the problem for a little while. I really don't know what to do. The other problem is a nagging oil leak coming from the seal around the clutch shaft behind the master cylinder. I have had the seal replaced twice and it still leaks. The shaft feels smooth as it can be, no burrs at all. The second time the seal was replace liquid seal was put around the opening where the seal goes in case there might be a casting problem. But it is still leaking oil!!!!!! It is slower that what it was but I DON'T LIKE LEAKS and I don't think this bike should be leaking oil with this few of miles on it. Has anyone had either of these problems with their bike and what is the cure? I told my dealer that I have 2 more years of warranty left on this bike and it will be back for the next two years if this oil leak isn't fixed. But I am really running out of patience. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Damon Cates
  2. In for a penny in for a pound. On this years round of 1st gen bike upgrades so far: New tires and rubber front and back By local Two Brothers tires Lawrenceville, Ga. Specializing in MC Tires. Programable TCI upgrade By Dingy New Starter clutch by Dano. So in prep for new Starter Clutch upgrade I'm noticing second stock stator is 1/2 crispy. Evidently, Time to do the high output stator Upgrade. So my question is what is the latest and greatest word on a high output Stator upgrade options for a 1987 MK2 XVZ1300 VR. Might as well do it now while I'm into it this far :mo money:and I have a loaner bike, and convertible to drive around until the 1st gen gets back on the road. Bob
  3. I am having the tires replaced on my 1987 Yamaha Venture Royale. It there any maintance I should have done while the wheels are off?
  4. 1st; I did do some searches before posting: Bought a 2008 Venture with 9k miles last week. It's still freezing here so I haven't even ridden it yet but I am already scoping out the farkles .... 1. Looking for a recommendation on a tank bag. I usually have gloves, an SLR camera, eyeglass case, and a bunch of little items. 2. what options for a tach. I know I don't really need one but every road bike I've ever owned had one so I feel naked without it. 3. saddlebag liners available? 4. local dealer says dunlop elite III's for rubber. I know there is a million opinions on what the are the BEST tires and I don't want to open that can of worms; just wondering if there is a reason against the Dunlops. had them on my Gold WIng and liked them. I am planning on buying one of the small 0-60 psi hand pumps for the suspension and flat tire inflation. thx in advance for help or suggestions.
  5. Has anyone tried these Dyna Beads to balance their tires ? Looks interesting ! http://www.innovativebalancing.com/motorcycle.htm Keith
  6. If you all have some time to blow, got an interesting story to tell. Fair warning, it's time consuming OK here goes. Bought a 1982 vehicle from my volunteer fire department. It was our utility van that carries the jaws, extra air pacs, chain saw etc... Vehicle only has 17000 miles on it so I was pretty psyched about getting it. Tires that are on it are Firestone LT 235 75R 15. Tons of tread left but as you can figure original. Sidewalls have very little cracking and in overall decent shape to get by with until I buy new when I'm done designing inside of it . Now comes the good stuff. I went looking for a spare with same tread. Come to find out tires were recalled in 1991. Ya'll remember that news story back then? Well, called Firestone to verify these were the tires. Lady on other end whom I'll call "Cathy" tells me after I give her all the information she ask for "Yes, bring it in and we'll give you a free set" OK, now I'm REALLY happy. Tires worth more then I paid for Van. I call local Firestone dealership, give them the info and he verifies with Corporate that in deed they were to be replaced. I make an appointment to have tires exchanged. Now comes the interesting part. I show up on time and drop off van and walk across street for some breakfast with my bride and I get a phone call from store. After rechecking tires, they were NOT the ones to be replaced. Ones that were had a P in front of it or something. I call corporate and get "Cathy" again and ask her politely what was going on. She says "I'm sorry but I was wrong, it's my mistake" Now these tires I'm supposed to have gotten were approx 169.00 each then install15.00 each. 184.00 total. I tell her I just took a day off work, drove 70 miles, wasted half a tank of gas and I get "I'm wrong" Can you do something with the price at least? Her response, "Nope, theres nothing I can do" I ask to speak to her supervisor and was told "He won't help you with this either" I ask again and again to speak to supervisor and get same response until the last time and she says "I'll let you talk to a co-worker" Now I'm pretty PO'ed and tell her I don't want her co-worker I want her supervisor. She says "Hang on" Then proceeds to send my call to "Terry" her co-worker. I ask him if he was her supervisor and nothing, I ask again and he responds "I'm in the office with her and supervising whats she's doing" I'm furious by now and said I'll call back. Now back to dealership, he offers to sell me the tires at his cost 109.00 x 4 =436 plus tax and free install if I get nothing from calling a different numbers main office. I said OK let me call. No answer there after 5 tries. Manager in store is apologizing constantly and saying "I hope your not holding our store at blame, I was only going by corporate" Told him it wasn't his fault and I wasn't blaming him. I said go ahead and have new tires put on and figure I would call back on Monday after the Holiday week. Fast forward to Monday. Finally get ahold of supervisor and explain the whole thing with heavy accent on the treatment from his subordinates. He said he would call back after checking into it. 15 minutes go by and phone call. "Cathy" admits to everything and he offers to give me 50% off on tires. I agree and hang up. 736 plus tax original price 248 plus tax paid when all said and done Told ya it was a long story but my point is, don't give up even when you think it's a lost cause. My local Firestone dealer will continue to get my business and I hope "Cathy" and "Terry" got a good yelling at for not being honest and deceiving.
  7. Had to replace the wife's tires on her '05 F-150, and we ended up going with Nitto's instead of one of the other better known brands. I did a lot of research on them, and they rated out even better than Michelin's for light duty trucks, and were $300 less expensive. They are very quiet on the road and have a 65,000 mile treadwear rating. Anyone have any experience with this brand? http://www.nittotire.com/
  8. I put new tires on for summer and found that as soon as bike was not perfectly vertical that I got a drive line howl that would not go away until I straitened the bike up or ended up going straight after a corner. It didn't matter how mild the corner was the noise was there. I assumed the tires. Not! Brother had same brand on his 1200 BMR Putting the bike on the center stand and starting it and putting it in gear, I found that there is considerable play in the u joint..Putting a long screwdriver in there and prying it I found the play. Does the engine have to be removed to change that out? I see these offered on ebay but with gear that goes into the motor/transmission attached to the universal. What is easiest?
  9. I bought a new set of E3's from Jake Wilson a few weeks back and finally installed them. The difference is amazing. I didn't realize just how bad my bike was handling. When I bought the bike in February of 2010 it had 34,000 miles and I had no idea how many miles were on the tires but they were in great shape. I put 12,000 more miles on them before I decided it was time for a new set. Riding in Florida, most of the riding is flat so the center of the tire wears much faster. That makes turning gradually require more effort. It happens so slowly that until I had new tires I didn't even notice. I now understand why there is a "recommended" break in period to scuff the tires in and get used to how the handleing has changed. Up until now I had only drug the floorboards twice. Can you say "pucker factor" when you don't expect it. Now (after 200 miles) I have drug the boards several time without feeling like I was about to lay the bike down. The grip and control is exceptional with the new tires. Parking lot manuvers are also much easier. I'm only 5' 10" and always felt the size of the bike. Now the bike feels much smaller. I don't think I'll let this set get as worn as the last set before I replace them. I love the feel of new tires in the morning.
  10. 2 Full sets of snow tires for my truck and Taters suv (8 tires)............ $1,086.00 4 winter wiper blades......... $62.00 8 sand tubes (winter weight) $46.00 I HATE WINTER !!
  11. I have an oppurtunity for a cross country ride from (San Jose)California to (Baton Rouge)Louisiana in april. Do you think an '83 Venture can make that trip? My bike has no issues right now and i do have some spare parts (TCI, voltage regulator, and CMS etc.) that would join me on the trip. My bike has around 46k miles on it right now, new tires, new stator, and front progressive springs. Any Suggestions on things that i should do before the spring trip? Correction, it has 36K on it. Has anyone done this trip before? I have 14 days for my trip.

  13. I purchased MyPalomino in March, 2008 w/ 32,700 miles. The Avon Venom tires were advertised as "like new" and indeed appeared that way. Several hundred miles ago, I started to notice a disturbing wear pattern on my front tire. The left hand side of the tire was wearing much more rapidly than the right side. The bike's clock recently rolled past the 42K mark and I came to the conclusion that I could no longer ignore the wear and I ordered new tires. (see pix) I've been waiting to get whitewalls anyway. Ordered a set of Dunlop 404s from Motorcycle Superstore on the last day for the VR discount and received them on Friday, HOWEVER, I want to understand the geometry of this type of tire wear. Is it normal for the Avon Venom front tire to show this type of wear w/ less than 10K miles? Could this type of wear have been alleviated w/ the installation of a center stand or garaging the bike w/ wheels lifted off ground? I read similar threads discussing, among other things, the geometry of left hand turns and the added wear on tires. Could that be a contributing factor? The front wheel appears to be turning true, HOWEVER, there could alignment issues. How would I know? I want to avoid this kind of wear on the new Dunlops, if possible. Any input would be appreciated. The first pic is of the tire's condition when I purchased the bike. BTW, the rear tire looks like it could go another 20K miles or more.
  14. I ordered E3 tires from Jake Wilson and they arrived yesterday. The rear tire has a date stamp of 1310 and the front is 3907. When I ordered the tires, I called and asked them to check the date codes for me. The lady I talked to assured me that the tires sell so fast that I souldn't have any problem with getting old tires because they rotate their stock. I'm planning on calling tomarrow to see about returning the front tire for a newer one. I remember reading a thread about this happening to someone else on the site. How should I handle the call to asure that I get a tire that is hopefully 2 years old or less?
  15. Dealer suppose to have my new tires mounted by tomorrow. Whats the best method of scuffing them in a 4inch grinder with a wire brush attachment or just some sand paper.
  16. i replaced the bridgstones on my 2010rsv this past weekend with e3's and got to take my first ride since going to MD in june, put on 310 miles and i must say wow whata major difference only had 3800 miles on the org tires but that was enough, rode some what calm and average 45mpg so not a bad day for a great ride
  17. Do you have to remove the tires from the bike to balance them?
  18. Getting ready for our first long distance trip to Tenn. in 3 weeks have read a lot of threads on tires an choices. V7 Goose has a bunch But anyway checked my tires on my new to me RSV still have good tread but front is Dunlop 404 an rear a Bridgestone something both have a date code of 09. The more i read the less uncomfortable I am with this set up been running zero air 2up since i have had. Thanks to info here I kinda know where to start on the air issue. One problem I thought was all me was a lil wallowing in the turns especially long sweepers cant seem to hold a continues line all the way through will out constant correction If i understand what I've read the air suspension an tires are the culprit an yes i check tire pressure an set according to owners Manuel. So now to my Question is combo. safe an will a new set of tires make me a better rider. I know a better gun won't make someone a better shot but can let them shoot up to there ability.
  19. I read a recent thread about using car tires for the rear of their gold wings........Will this work on a 2004 Yamaha RS Venture? And why would I do this. I will be needing to replace my tires shortly and just want to know. Okay, I know someone out there has some experience with this; help me out.
  20. OK,I am giving the "Darkside" a shot. I am doing this for two reasons,1: Ive read alot on different forums about blowouts on motorcycle this summer,Heat related?? I dont know. 2: Weight carrying capacity, on a Wing the ONLY MC tire that has a rear 992 LB rating is an Elite 3,The rest are 827LB..way too low in my opinion. Avg mileage on rear MC tires on a WING is 8-9000 miles,A Wing eats up tires. Ive ridden with alot of guys that are PEGSCRAPERS running Car Tires and watched the amount of tread intact with the ground and it is alot more than you think. I put mine on today, are there any differences? Yes but very Slight. You CAN feel a bit of roll going from straight down the road to a hard,REAL hard curve BUT it is ever so slight. The ride is way smoother than a MT and the 2 things that I like is....It is a Run-Flat tire AND 1201 LB rear tire rating. One reason I never tried it on the Venture is the amount of air pressure it takes to seat a Car Tire on a Venture,My opinion only is that was just to dangerous in MY eyes. The Goldwing is different,A car tire seats as easy as if you were installing on a car,no high pressures to seat it. I did not balance as I am running Centramatic Wheel balancers both front and rear. The ride is SILKY smooth as far as I ran it up to which was 113 MPH,then backed off. My speedometer was not affected, reading the same as it was with the motorcycle tire which is dead on accurate on the 2009/2010 models. The tire I am trying is a brand new Kumho 195/55/R16 Ecsta Run Flat. I will keep you informed on how I like it but so far A-OK................................. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING TO ANYONE ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM AS THE RUN FLAT TIRES CAN LOOSE AIR IF A NAIL OR WHATEVER GETS IN IT AND YOU WILL NOT KNOW IT FOR AWHILE UNLESS YOU MONITOR CLOSELY. THIS ALSO IS NOT ENDORSED BY ANYONE AT VENTURERIDER.ORG , JUST MY PERSONAL CHOICE.
  21. Just wanted to say Thank You to all of you on here who recommended the E3 tires. Just replaced the original 404 tires with a set of E3's and WOW what a difference no squirrelly feeling on rough pavement or tar snakes or even road cracks. Top heavy feeling is gone! Anyway thanks everyone. Anyone still running the 404's try E3's when you wear your 404's out. You will not be sorry. By the way they were only $40 more than a new set of 404's! Ken!
  22. New to this talk of the Kumo tire. I have a 2000 Ventura and just put a sidecar on. The sidecar has its own brake and I can remove it for two up. At 74 I might not do that very much, wife has problems with legs on long rides when two up. From what I read its as good as the regular MC tires. Do you think one would work on the front to help with steering. Won't rake front in case I want to ride without sidecar. Thanks, labill

It,s About time for new tires I got 14,000 on the set that came with the bike new .. Is there any good sugestion out there? Need a set that will go the distance. Any one out there willing to suggest a good brand Ron:cool10:
  24. Bought the MCT from a forum member in the spring...I have had the trailer out a couple of times in the last few weeks getting use to it behind the RSV before taking off for South Dakota on the 3rd......Last weekend I noticed the right tire on the trailer was low/almost flat.....Filled it up to 55lbs and this AM noticed it was flat again. These are basically NEW tires...Previous owner never used the trailer...Ran some H2O over the tire and found a small..and I mean small leak in the middle of the tread...pinhole almost...Took it to get it plugged and an inside patch..Did I say me and the wife are L leaving for South Dakota on the 3rd) Question ???...in looking a the tire I noticed that these Stock Tires are 2 ply...I am concerned that if it picked up something this easy on a couple of test drives...Should I go out and invest in some 6 ply tires?.....Can pick up a couple at Tractor Supply for about $90-$100... I do have a spare in case one of the stock tires picks something up during the trip...... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA
  25. I believe in giving credit where credit is due. I recently had to replace my tires and if not for the quick and efficient service of Southwest Moto Tires (http://www.swmototires.com/) I’d have had to miss a long anticipated ride. I went with the Dunlop 404 WWW and am so far very pleased with the ride and must say that www’s look great with Black Cherry. When I placed the order I had trouble entering the credit card information for my order however I sent them an email, they replied within 45 minutes, my order was processed the same day and I received the tires a few days later. I picked them up and had them installed in the States and was able to make my ride the next day. Over all, I purchased and installed the tires for half the price it would cost me to do it here. In fact the two tires cost me $207 US where Canadian dealers are asking $229. just for the rear tire. The best part is that while the tires were being mounted I had lunch with one of our members and got a great ride out of the deal!
