  1. Anybody going to the Annual Road Kill Festival in Marlington,WV this weekend. If you do try the fried possum with coon stuffing it's great.:rotf:
  2. FOR ALL WHO “KNOW” MOTORCYCLE RIDERS I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But you didn’t see me put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But you didn’t see me playing Santa at the local mall. I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant. But you didn’t see me attend a meeting to raise more money for hurricane relief. I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But you didn’t see me driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the window. I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your kids. But you didn’t see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you stare at my long hair. But you didn’t see me and my friends cut ten inches off to donate to Locks of Love. I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But you didn’t see me and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none. I saw you look in fright at my tattoos. But you didn’t see me cry as my children were born and have their names written over and in my heart. I saw you change lanes, talking on the phone while rushing off to go somewhere. But you didn’t see me going to be home with my family. I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But you didn’t see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you yelling at your kids in the car. But you didn’t’ see me pat my child’s hands knowing he was sitting safely behind me. I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But you didn’t see me squeeze my wife’s leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you race down the road in the rain. But you didn’t see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But you didn’t see me trying to turn right. I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But you didn’t see me leave the road. I saw you waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But you didn’t see me. I wasn’t there. I saw you go home to your family. But you didn’t see me. Because I died that day you cut me off. I was just a biker. A person with friends and family. But you didn’t see me. REPOST THIS IN HOPES THAT PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND THE BIKER COMMUNITY. I HOPE YOU NEVER LOSE SOMEONE THAT RIDES…
  3. I am organizing a ride for people where I work - and came up with some assumptions to keep in mind while riding. I would love to hear your feedback - other assumptions worth remembering? Good Assumptions to Make for a Safe Ride 1. A bump on the road is bigger than it looks. 2. A hole in the road is deeper than it looks. 3. Just past a blind crest of a hill is a sharp jog to the right or left, or an abrupt T-road. 4. Just because the other guy has a yield sign doesn’t mean he will. 5. Just because the other guy has a stop sign doesn’t mean he will. 6. Just because the other guy has a red light doesn’t mean a thing. 7. Just because the other guy at an intersection looks you in the eye and waves you on through does not mean he will not turn right in front of you. 8. Just because the other guy is sitting beside you in a right turn only lane with his right blinker on, the front wheels pointed to the right, does not mean he will turn right. 9. A car in front of you with a turn signal on means either: (a) it will turn in the direction indicated, (b) it will turn in the direction not indicated, © it won’t turn at all, or (d) it will stop. 10. At every driveway, a car will pull out, back out, or pull into, regardless of who or where you are. Plan on it. 11. A nice twisty can have gravel, wet leaves, animals, and other pestilences which will cause you to soil your underpants. 12. A nice blind twisty will have a semi taking up both lanes, right at you. 13. If the sign on a sharp curve says 15 mph, that should tell you something. 14. Gravel on a twisty means trouble. 15. In a no-passing zone, plan for the on-coming vehicle to pass another approaching vehicle, right straight towards you, and in your lane. 16. A green light will not stay green very long. 17. If the driver of a vehicle beside you looks straight at you, right in the eye, that does not mean (s)he sees you. They will pull over on you. 18. At intersections, on-coming vehicles move faster than you think they are. 19. At an intersection, you will not be seen by other drivers, no matter how big your bike is or how many lights you have on. 20. It takes longer to stop than you think it will. 21. You drop off the shoulder of the road, you will cry on it. 22. In a wooded area or in a farm area or in a suburban area, a deer will jump across the road. Right in front of you. 23. It is not a good idea to run your bike with 5 lbs. of pressure in the tires. 24. That is good stuff they teach you in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. 25. There are bold riders. There are old riders. There aren’t any bold, old riders. Think about it.
  4. I will make this short until the drugs let me become more coherent. Last friday, Moundsville, WV, 745 pm. crossing through an intersection at 30 mph, I was hit by a 16 year old girl who failed to check or slow down to turn left. direct hit to my left leg. knocked me off my 07 rsv, which continued 120 yards down road with out me. "damn fine bike," I thought to myself watching her drive away as if I was still on her, as I lay on the road. Fractured thigh now has a rod through it, shin had a carbon fiber and titanium external fixture to hold it all together, changed to a rod this morning, ankle and foot both broken, three huge gashes with black foam to pump out fluids. Thanks to helmet and Joe Rocket Ballistic, rest of me is OK. Just arranged for wi-fi in the ICU, where it appears I will be for a while.
  5. My wife (Teri) and I ( Michael) just got home from the spring and the meet Bill put on what a good time. I could have not picked better people to spend 4 day with they where all so nice. we where treated like everyone had know-en us for years. We would like to thank you all for the trip and Road kill watch out for those couch's (LOL) and guess who won the cover the only one that had to had to wipe his seat every morning. Pic to follow.
  6. I was recently given a set of mufflers that are suppose to be off a 2006 Road King but the guy that gave them to me said they did not have catalytic converters in them. The part numbers are 65538-95 and 65539-95 and say they make 80db on a FLT 1340/1400. When I run the part numbers through google it says they are for a FLT just like on the mufflers which is a Tour Glide. The Road king is a FLHT. Also if they are the right part numbers how do I tell what year they are off of and whether they have the catalytic converters in them? Thanks for any help.
  7. Well, it lasted a week- Went for about a 20 mile ride today- had to stop about 5 miles from the house and let the bike cool for an hour. The warmer the thing got, the more it slipped- Didnt matter what gear. It got so bad that just before I got off the road I nearly got run over pulling away at a green light. To refresh y'all- It's got new plates, boss, slave, rebuilt master and barnett kit. Anybody got any ideas? Or does anybody wanna buy an 89VR?- I've had about enough.
  8. Will they shadow me now??? xxxxxxx@bellsouth.net> Add to Address Book Date: 2007/08/07 Tue PM 05:31:47 EDT To: CC: Add to Address Book Subject: Highway 3 Yazoo County My name is James Pettis and I have a question and a comment. I'm in Yazoo County, What district is this? Yesterday I got a speeding ticket issued by Officer Haymer, C-10 (I can't read the ticket well, this name could be wrong) for 70 in a 55. I have no problem with this tickt, he got me dead to rights. (I am curious why the two vejhicles behind me weren't stoped) I haven't had a ticket in a long time. and after thinking about it i realised that I have redeveloped some bad habits. I think in part because of this highway, Highway 3 . I travel this highway every morning going to work and every evening going home. In the mornings I have delapidated log trucks and chip trucks running 80-90 miles an hour trying to get in a certain number of loads for the day so they can make the check they need for the week. I know this because i have heard them talking on the CB radio about it. I know about their speed because I have checked them up to 90mph. I also have the added pleasure of passenger vehicles trying to get to work on time from Lousiana and from warren county. This is every morning. In the evenings, I have the same compliment of traffic but now they are running behind so i guess they have to push it a little harder so I get tailgaited pretty bad. Did i mention i ride a motorcycle. Not a crotch rocket; but a 1983 Yamaha XVZ1200. This is a Touring bike, not a speed bike. Tailgaiting and motorcycles DO NOT MIX!! I am sick of the dangerous position i and my family am being put in and the fact that every time i ask i am told that we are working on it or we are understaffed. Personally i think that we just dont want to ride up and down a road with nothing on it. On an a good note, Officer Haymer did tell me he was tired of giving breakes to Yazoo county and he would start wrighting 100 tickets a week. Is that a lot? He did show me two tickets that he wrote to truck drivers; but this afternoon. I got tailgaited again. I let him push me up to 60 before he finally had a place to pass. this was a grain truck going back after another load of corn. He turned off at Satartia. No tag on the trailer. I have been working this Job in Yazoo city for 17 years and things are getting worse. They know that if the HP runs the road they will only be here for a day or two and wont be seen again for several months. I think the road needs to be monitored by the highway patrol, not to wright tickets; but to see what i'm talking about. Put a couple of cruisers and motorcycles on the road. Unmarked so they can see the truth of the matter. That's my challenge to the MHP. Come see what i'm talking about then do something about it. I'll bet many of these trucks could be put off of this road just on equipment violations alone. Plaese pass this e-mail on to the appropriate department. And I would like to hear back from someone. Oh, By the way. let me just say again. I got my ticket fair and square. The Officer did his job. I'm not asking for a break and i'm not asking for his resignation or anything like that. Thanks for your time James Pettis
  9. On a recent trip through Wyoming we talked to some people from Canada who had an ingenious Lexan cover over their headlight to protect it from road debris. Does anyone know where I can find one? thanks in advance.
  10. This change is not for me, I am Love the VFR and can do 600 to 800 mile days in the twisty stuff and not feel beat. The wife however, is a completely different story and I think the RSTD might fit the bill. So tell me please, brothers of the road, who here has gone from a SPORT-tourer to a Tourer and what are you thoughts. BTW looking at the RSTD as it has the best engine format ever for a motorcycle, the mighty V4.
  11. Today was maintenance day for my RSV. Gonna get her ready for Myrtle Beach next weekend. Ok so I received my Chrome Stebel air horn Thursday and installed it today; looks and sounds awesome. Thanks Carbonone for the great SS bracket. While I was at it I did a few other things and also changed the headlight to a Sylvania SilverStar H4ST. So the horn scares the crap out of just about anybody around that's great, but I wanted to check out the headlight so I took her out to a nice dark road that happens to go through a swamp to adjust the low beam so I could see but it wasn't too bothersome to oncoming drivers. You can already see where this is going right! Wrong I didn't see anything on that road and I traveled up and down it 4 times. Nice and dark, passed a few cars no one flashed me so I guess I got the alignment right. Anyway on my way back I was going down a road I used to live on and knew pretty well, still out in the sticks. Coming off a corner in a 45 zone that immediately changes into a 55 off the corner; well I was rolling into the throttle marveling at how bright and clear the light was looked down and was passing through 60 looked up and caught sight of two deer running towards the road left to right on a collision course with me. Rolled off the throttle hitting the brakes and "Blasted" the Stebel at them. What happened next was almost comical. Both deer slammed on the brakes and started skidding on the asphalt looking like "Bambi" on ice the first time. Both trying their darnedest to change direction and high tail it the other way. I still had to swerve to avoid one but we both cleared each other. WoW I've got to believe that without that light I wouldn't have seen them and without the Stebel Horn I don't think they would have slowed down. It could have been a really bad situation. I guess turning back around at the auto parts store today and getting that bulb was a good thing. Wayne
  12. I have a 2006 RSTD with 5K miles on it. When I corner or weave the bike on a straight road I hear a roar from the rear of the bike. Your help would:confused24: be appreciated.
  13. As I wait for some riding weather I've been reading through the owners manual. I can't believe Yamaha's suggested shift speeds for break in. I'm interested to hear how others road during the break in period and tips.
  14. just looking at saddle bags and found these and i know there is always some one looking http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-VENTURE-Saddlebags-matching-pair-1983-85_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ84147QQihZ006QQitemZ160071178413QQrdZ1 here is a set for a road star 05 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-xv1700-roadstar-tour-classic-leather-saddlebags_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ84147QQihZ017QQitemZ270076968556QQrdZ1#ebayphotohosting
  15. I want to be able to carry my golf clubs on my 87 but don't want to pull a trailer. I have a hard case for my clubs and thought of putting a luggage rack on my trunk but am wondering 2 things--1-will this be too much weight for the top of the trunk and 2- will it act as a spoiler and possibly lift the back end as I'm going down the road? I would like to be able to carry 2 sets(wifes) as well but don't think that will be able to happen. Thanks for any advice-help
  16. Does anyone have any experience with Rumble Road Amplified Speakers? and how do you like them? Thanks
  17. I have read a lot of posts here and on other forums about accidents between motorcycles and cages, most of the time the incident is blamed on the cage. The most common comment is that the cage driver says the he did not see the motorcycle. This affliction can be caused by any number of things. The flavor of the day is CELLPHONE. While there are a lot of reasons why a cage driver doesn’t see a motorcycle there some things that you the rider can do to make sure that you are not one of those reasons. 1. Ride to be seen. Where you ride on the road makes all the difference in whether or not you can be seen. On a two-lane road or highway, if you are not riding close to the centerline you are invisible. Try this, next time you are on the road and there is a good sized vehicle coming toward you with a smaller vehicle behind it, watch that trailing vehicle as it weaves back and forth in its lane. Even a car or SUV can become invisible behind a larger vehicle. If you are riding too close to the vehicle in front of you, you are invisible. This is especially bad at intersections on a busy street. If you are too close behind a car and there is a car that the driver is anxious to make a left and there is a gap between the car in front of you and one behind you that the turning car thinks he can make, he WILL not see you on your motorcycle. But if you are at least a couple of CAR lengths behind and in the left wheel track then the driver has a chance to see you. Whenever I approach an intersection and am behind a vehicle I position myself for maximum visibility, I sit tall in the saddle and look directly at the turning driver. This method I have found draws the driver’s attention to me. When riding on multi-lane roads and highways the riding area changes with traffic and requires due diligence on the riders part, in California where splitting traffic is allowed, I found that the safest place to be on the freeways was the white line between the two farthest left lanes. I hope that one day splitting traffic is legal in all states. California aside, multi-lane highway traffic varies and it is up to the rider to determine where he is the most visible. I have found that if I am traveling a long distance on a busy highway that the fast lane is the best place to be, I ride next to the white line between lanes. I do this so that I am visible to any vehicle around me. If there are two cars ahead side by side and two behind side by side you now can be seen by all four vehicles. This also has the affect of giving you an exit in case someone does something stupid. If a cage decides that your lane is greener than his, instead of veering left and possibly running into a k-rail or into the median, with a little throttle and slight adjustment of direction you can split between the vehicles ahead of you. Although it may be illegal, if it saves your life, who cares. 2. Ride aware. (Leave plenty of space around you.) If you are aware of the traffic around you, then you are much safer. You can avoid incidents just by watching the traffic around you. If you scan your mirrors every few seconds then you will be hard to surprise from behind. If you watch the driving habits of those in front of you, you can avoid most incidents ahead of you. If there is a driver that is driving steadily and he swerves a little and comes back in line then there may be a road gator or some other small obstruction ahead. Not too dangerous for a car but could be bad for a MC. If he slams on his brake and swerves then look for a path that will take you away from the hazard while looking to see if it was an animal that may travel into your path. This is a good time to mention that the brake is not always your best friend, sometimes the best way out of trouble is the accelerator. I guess an example of that statement is in order. I had just bought my VR and was riding it home from Tennessee on I40. There were several tractor-trailer rigs in front of me in the right hand lane. As I was approaching the rear one he turned on his signal to move into my lane, I slowed down to let him over, as he passed the second rig he hit a two by four and threw it up in the air, there was a rig to my right and no where to go to the left. I saw that the board would fall before my front tire and accelerated so that I would go over it before it had a chance to bounce back up. It had the affect of breaking my exhaust collector, but it may have bounced up and hit the fairing or worse, me. Animals are some of the most unpredictable objects you can encounter on any road. There is one very important thing to note about animals and that is if they are frightened, as by a vehicle on the road, their instinct is to get in front of the danger and try to out run it. So if you see a cow, deer or… on the side of the road there is a good chance that, even if it had no intention of crossing the road, your approach will cause it to panic and run in front of you. So the best defense is to slow down when you first see the animal and give it a chance to cross. We also know that animals can run on the road from a totally invisible area and be a complete surprise. This again is where the accelerator and not your brake could be your best friend. Any of us who have ridden dirt bikes knows that if there is an obstruction in front of you that you either have to get the front wheel off the ground or at least unload it, take the weight off of it, if you want to go over the object. If there is no chance of not hitting an animal up to deer size then accelerating or at least not hitting the brakes could be the difference between life and death. By panic hitting the brakes you squat the front end and bring up the rear end, this is a recipe for disaster as more than likely you will endo. By accelerating you have the advantage of momentum and have the possibility of either pushing the animal aside or going over the top of it. Yes, you will damage the bike, yes you may get hurt, but your chances of survival are greatly increased. If the animal is larger than a deer then… Remember, YOUR safety is up to YOU, NOT the other guy. RIDE TO BE SEEN

    Hwy 632/Peninsula Rd

From Rosseau to Port Carling, the combination of Hwy 632 and Peninsula Road (County Road 7) is a great scenic route with lots of sweepers, twists and ups and downs. Only runs about 30 kms in total, but very enjoyable ride. Cheers,

    Southwood Road

The Southwood Road (County Road 13) between Torrance - at Highway 169 - and Severn Bridge - at Highway 11 - is a nice little 40 km combination of twists, ups and downs, and natural scenery. Can be done at a leisurely pace (speed limit is 60 kms/hr for most of the route) but be on the watch out for sport bikers trying to tear up the road. Cheers,
  20. A buddy of mine is giving me a set of Road King muflers off a 2006 bike. My question is will these fit a 2005 RSTD. I don't know if they have cats. or not but does it matter? Also who on the list sells the brackets for these? Tom M. 2005 RSTD
  21. We don't have the challenging curves or beautiful fall foilage rides. However, we do have miles and miles of glorius roads that will take you through small beach towns along the Atlantic Ocean. A1A South out of St. Augustine to Daytona is a very nice ride along the Atlantic Ocean. It will take you through small beach communities and nice lunch spots right on the water. I recommend the "Hightides" restaurant near Flagler beach. The Loop in Daytona It's like no other ride. It's freedom, sunshine, open road and graceful curves. It's called the Loop and for motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere, it's a riders dream. The Loop begins with a northerly trek at the foot of the Granada Bridge on John Anderson Drive in Ormond Beach. Going North, riders are greeted by a cathedral of trees up to the Highbridge Road where they hang a left (to go west) and go over the bridge and the Intracoastal Waterway (the Halifax River). There are several places to stop along the way and just enjoy the Florida countryside. After more winding turns, you'll come upon Walter Boardman road where you will make another turn that takes you further west to Old Dixie Highway. When you reach Old Dixie Highway, take another left (to go south) toward Ormond Beach.
