Recently I sealed a fuel leak on one carb. During testing I noticed one carb slide was lagging behind the others (bad diaphragm). For the moment I have repaired the diaphragm with silicone. The bike was running rough after the repair, leading me to believe the synch was probably off. My home-made synch tool verified that the carbs were off and I made adjustments. The bike did not seem to properly respond to these adjustments. I decided to pull the pilot screws caps and check the settings. It has been said that a general setting for the pilot screws would be 2.25 turns out. I found mine to be between 3.25 and 3.75! My thinking is that after 24 years and 63,000+ miles, these screws must have backed out on their own. I adjusted all of them to 2.5 turns out and took my wife to dinner (45 mile round-trip). The bike is running much smoother below 4k and seems to have better torque. Comments from the gallery?

OK since all technicians are lazy. Does any one have a pic of the covers for the PMS (pilot mixture screws) I am hoping that I won't have to pull the carbs to get the anti tamper plugs. I just picked up a set of Shogun pipes and the K&N's are on order so I'm going to have to fatten her up a tad. I haven't even looked for them yet so you can go ahead and laugh at me if it is obvious where they are. Like I said I'M lazy

I'm so excited, even though this has nothing to do with motorcycles, I just had to share the news. Our oldest son, 26, has always wanted to be a pilot. My grandpa flew a Cessna, my dad is a pilot who flew Satabra's and since our son was 8 yrs old, he has wanted to learn to fly. He finally took the step and had his first flight lesson today!! Took off, flew the whole time and landed by himself!!! He called afterwards and I've never heard that kind of excitement in his voice!! I'm just so happy for him that I had to share the good news!! The instructor told him that he's had pilots with 15-20 hours flight time in and can't land as smoothly!! That's my boy!! (Mom's are allowed to brag bout thier youngin's once in a while aren't they?) Anyway, just so dog gone happy he's following his dream!! Thanks for letting me share!:dancefool::dancefool:

My question for you hardcore knowledge guys. What makes the 83-85 faster? I'm looking at the carbs the only difference I know of 83 carbs had 42.5 pilot jets a 180 air jets all the rest of the years have 84-93 have 37.5 pilots and 170 air jets. So does that mean 84-85 are slower the 86-93? I read something about possible hotter cam. Slightly lighter weight 83-85 then 86-93. 86-93 has 100 more CC's. So whats the deal? (I put the original pilot and air jets in my 90 from 83 I gotta say I like it no more popping actually get a noticeable rpm change when adjusting pilot mixtures.)

Was wondering what the avarage mpg for Ventures was?I went from Baltimore to Brooklyn,Ny. yesterday and got 42.6 mpg.It was a spirited ride on the way running up to 75 or so.We got passed like we were standing still! On the way back traffic was terrible.Bumper to bumper 3/4 of the way home.Motor wise bike is all stock execpt for R/K mufflers and pilot srews turned out 1/4 of a turn. Not sure if this is the right forum for this question :think:I,m sure some have input though.

For those that have made adjustments to their pilot circuits... what technique do you use? With 4 carbs can you hear an idle change when tuning each carb? I plugged my AIS and synched my carbs last weekend. I also popped the caps and turned the pilots out 1/4 turn each. Since then the bike is running great but I'm now getting a bit of popping through the exhaust on decel. That signifies a lean condition but I turned the pilots out not in.

Put on new pipes and bike was back firing, had a friend said he new how to fix it, didn't work. Does anyone know how many turns the pilot jets should be turned out to be close to factory specs. Like to have it close so it doesn't blow up before I can get it in to the shop. Thanks

Did 1984 carbs come with 42.5 pilot jets or 37.5?
