  1. Obama To Sign Sales Tax Credit For New Motorcycle Purchase February 18, 2009 - 02:38 PM http://www.wingstuff.com/files/blogs/00195_obama_tax_credit/tax_credit.jpg Tax Credit For Purchase Of New Motorcycles Thanks to the efforts of the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) along with Harley and many others, this bill will be signed into law by President Obama. This historic motorcycle event will allow motorcycle riders to deduct their sales and excise tax with the purchase of a new motorcycle. It is now part of the presidents stimulus package that will help dealers sell more bikes. Historic Motorcycle Tax Credit Relief Bill Motorcycles will now be included as "Qualified Vehicles" in section 1008 of the legislation of this tax relief bill. Anyone purchasing a new motorcycle can deduct the Sales and Excise Tax Paid on their 2009 tax return. Prior to the latest version of this bill, Washington wanted to only apply this tax relief credit to the purchase of a new car or truck only. Thanks to everyone at the AMA, Harley and other groups who worked so hard for the motorcycle community, motorcycles have now been added to the bill and will be part of President Obama's national stimulus plan. Motorcycles Help Our Nations Economy Motorcycles save gas, reduce traffic congestion and have become a practical form of transportation worldwide. Here in the United States the highest percentage has always been for enjoyment and recreation. Abroad, most countries found motorcycles and scooters to be the smartest form of transportation, reducing fuel costs and traffic congestion. States like California, with high traffic congestion and smog in some cities have already passed laws allowing motorcycles to use the car pool lane as well as splitting lanes in traffic, provided proper speed limits are respected. So many of our own regular Gold Wing customers have been using their bikes as transportation to and from work for these very reasons. They are able to use the car pool lanes, get to and from work faster and save fuel while riding their motorcycles everyday and enjoying every minute of it. http://www.wingstuff.com/files/blogs/00195_obama_tax_credit/europe_bikes.jpg Motorcycles & Motor Scooters Abroad Visit countries like Italy, you will soon find the only way to get around the city is by motor scooter or motorcycle. It is also the only way to find parking due to lack of parking in busy cities. That trend has becoming more popular here in the United States for the same reasons. I recently visited Italy this past year and enjoyed seeing mothers riding sons and daughters to school each morning. Most were outfitted with rear trunks for storage, wind protectors and side bags to carry anything from books to groceries. This photo was taken while walking down a typical street in Florence, Italy. You soon realize motor scooters and motorcycles were the smartest form of transportation. Most business men traveled across the city on scooters, while most small cars were stuck in traffic. Besides saving gas and reducing traffic, motorcycles and motor scooters are the only way you'll find a parking spot in and around the cities of europe. The Future Of Motorcycles Motorcycle riding is a growing trend that will continue to grow into the future. With gas prices rising years ago overseas, it has always been a worldwide trend that saves fuel, reduces traffic, besides enjoyable. Bottom line, motorcycles are far more efficient than cars and help reduce traffic in busy cities. Safety features like motorcycle Air Bags such as the legendary Honda Gold Wing GL1800, as well as luxury features such as XM, Siruis Radio, CB, Cell Phone intergration, GPS, Intercoms, Heated Seats, Armrests, Drink Holders has created a comfort level for the rider and co-rider equal or better than driving an automobile. Motorcycles Bring People Together Saturday at Wingstuff is a good example of motorcycle people having a good time. There's always fresh coffee, donuts, bottled water and plenty of people to hang out with, and lots of Gold Wing accessories to browse. Locals typically arrange rides in the morning where everyone's welcome. What a great way to meet friends while riding with some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Joining motorcycle clubs like the GWRRA, GWTA and others are great ways to meet new riding friends. No other motorcycle has done a better job in creating friendships than the Honda Gold Wing motorcycle has over the years. We see this motorcycle tax credit in President Obama's stimulus package as a huge step towards encouraging more people to buy and ride motorcycles here in the United States. Post Thoughts And Comments Will this Sales Tax Credit motivate you to buy a new Honda Gold Wing motorcycle this year? Share your thoughts and comments, lets see what everyone thinks. 2. Anybody ever use one of these. Boss took my Nuvi 350 so I thought I'd go ahead and try the upgrade. It's a little larger and has blue tooth capabilities. It also looks like you can use way points to choose your route, something I couldn't do on the other. I can't afford the motorcycle version.

  9. is another motorcycle accident right after the first one. Not gory: http://www.dpccars.com/motorcycle-09/01-07-09page-Motorcycle-accident-on-live-TV.htm Looked like the incoming rider got cut off, but was too anxious to get around another car that was pulling off to his left and didn't brake early enough for the merging white sedan. Victim #4 behind him was'nt much smarter....Very avoidable.
  10. Yamaha to close motorcycle production lines for 10 days January 19th, 2009 Responding to slumping sales Yamaha is following the road taken by several other manufacturers and cutting back on its motorcycle production and temporarily shutting some facilities. Japan's Yamaha Motor Co Ltd made the announcement on Friday, confirming it would cut output by halting production at 11 facilities amid the global economic slump. Yamaha said in a release it would stop production for seven to 10 days in February and March at facilities making motorcycles, recreational vehicles, marine sports vehicles, industrial robots and parts. 17. Anyone using these Vintage Fenders?? I'm thinking of going with these and would like some imput... I'm going for a retro kinda look but am concerned about using fiberglass fenders... http://www.tejasthumpcycles.com/metricbikes/metriccruiser/parts/fenders/suzuki_vintage_fenders.jpg AD Copy: Vintage Yamaha fenders are styled to complement the look of vintage automobiles. Their long, flowing shape and “V” detail bodylines create a nostalgic, classic motorcycle that people will drool over and beg the question, “What year was this made?” Vintage Yamaha fenders are a direct replacement for stock.

  20. Good morning everyone. I am starting a new thread because I have seen several questions on small jumper cables. I purchased a set during a motorcycle show one year. They are about 10ft. long and have nice clamps and a carrying case. On a 1st Gen. the case fits flat in the bottom of the side bags. I have even loaned them here at work to jump a 4cyl. or small 6cyl. car! Here is the link from Cyclegagets: http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/product.asp?Item=BBOOST This is the same thing I have. I don't think you can build a set and get a storage bag on your own for this price. At least not unless you have things laying around. I like having them. Last time, I hooked them to a truck battery and just let it sit for about a half hour before starting. The donor vehicle wasn't even running. We then started the truck and then the bike. Hope this helps. JB

  23. Well, after a small(?) spill in front of my house that I rode away from...I got tired of looking at the dent inthe gas tank and the broken fairing so I put in an insurance claim and took the bike to the local dealer (Cal-Coast Motorsports) in Ventura, CA. Their estimate to repair the right side of the motorcycle was $7700. To be fair, they said that they would repair everything to showroom condition, and my motorcycle had EVERY chrome gadget/gizmo in the Star catalog. Many of these pieces had tiny scratches and were still VERY useable. Needless to say, the dollar amounts didn't add up, and GEICO totalled the motorcycle. I took the insurance proceeds and bought a 2009 model, red. The motorcycle, including a 4-year extended warranty (yes, through 2017), a 3 yr service contract (covers all recommended services, oil changes etc.), and 5 hrs of labor ($89 per hour) to put all of the sparkly trinkets on the new motorcycle for $21,000 OTD. i am thrilled and I can't wait to see how the 2009 fuel injected motor and CD player work out...oh wait....darn.
  24. Some students at our local high school have become interested in motorcycle mechanic training at Universal Technical Institute or Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. Has anyone had any experience with them or talked to anyone who has gone there? Iowa Guy
  25. Thought you might find this interesting. Study: Antilocks Trim Fatal Motorcycle Crashes WASHINGTON (AP)--Antilock brakes could help motorcycle riders avoid fatal crashes, according to a study by the insurance industry. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Wednesday that the fatal crash rate involving motorcycles equipped with optional antilock brakes, or ABS, was 38 percent lower than the rate involving similar motorcycles without the systems. Antilock brakes, like their counterparts on cars and trucks, help motorcycle riders stop their bikes abruptly without locking up the wheels or fishtailing. The system evaluates the brake pressure multiple times per second, allowing motorcycle riders to fully brake both wheels in an emergency situation and avoid hitting the pavement. Antilocks are more typically found on touring bikes and have been available on a limited number of motorcycles since BMW AG introduced ABS on the K100 in 1988. "Even though adding antilocks won't make motorcycling as safe as going by car, it's something manufacturers can do to reduce the risk of traveling on two wheels instead of four," said Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Rob Dingman, president and CEO of the American Motorcyclist Association, said the study shows the potential of antilock brakes, but it also underscores the need for a "long-overdue" federal study of the causes of motorcycle crashes. "Our members would welcome an ABS option on more models, but there must be a broader strategy to reduce motorcycle accidents and fatalities that includes increased education and motorist awareness," Dingman said. Safety officials have been concerned about a steady rise in motorcycle deaths. More than 5,100 motorcyclists died in 2007, compared with 2,294 fatalities in 1998. The deaths have climbed as vehicle miles traveled have grown by more than 20 percent during the period and motorcycle registrations have surpassed 6 million, compared with 3.8 million in 1998. In the report, researchers studied eight motorcycles that offer antilock brakes as an option. They found there were 6.6 fatal crashes per 10,000 registered motorcycles without antilocks in 2005-2006. The rate for the same bikes equipped with antilocks was 4.1, or 38 percent lower, during the same period. In a second study, the IIHS found that antilock brakes appeared to reduce collision claims — insurance losses were 21 percent lower for motorcycles with antilock brakes compared with similar motorcycles without the equipment. The findings were based on a data set of 72,000 insured years of 2003-2007 model year Honda, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha bikes. IIHS said antilocks were standard or optional equipment on about 40 motorcycles from the 2008 model year; top manufacturers include BMW, Harley-Davidson Inc., and Honda Motor Co. ABS typically adds about $1,000 or more to the cost of a motorcycle. Ty van Hooydonk, the Motorcycle Industry Council's director of product communications, said ABS can be effective for some riders but it depends on factors such as road conditions, skill level and the type of riding involved. "For a number of experienced enthusiasts out there, they're able to stop with a non-ABS motorcycle quicker than they are with an ABS-equipped motorcycle," van Hooydonk said. "It's all very situational." Ray Zimmerman, executive director of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, said ABS could be very valuable when trying to bring a bike to a stop on slick and icy roads. Zimmerman, of Ellisville, Mo., said he has been riding motorcycles for more than four decades and logged nearly 250,000 miles on BMW motorcycles. His ABS system has come in handy on two occasions, and he's glad he had it. "You keep a bike from swerving out of control one time, and it's worth (it)," he said.
