  1. I am looking to change/upgrade the passing lamps on my RSV. They are the Yamaha OEM sealed beam style, and I would really like to change to something with a replaceable H3 bulb. I would still like to use the existing mounts, is there a way or a different lens housing I can use? I also hate that the sealed beam is "yellow" compared to my Silverstar Ultra. Any and all help you can provide would be great.. Thanks JM
  2. Hi all. I had an unfortunate collision today. I'm fine but the bike took a hit. I'm looking for a right lower cowling and a passing lamp assembly. Nothing on eBay. I checked the OEM listing and they want $245 for the lower. I haven't been able to fine the passing lamps. If anyone has any or knows a good place to purchase please let me know. I'd like to get her fixed ASAP. Thanks for any help.
  3. I'm about to install my new passing lamps on my 06 R.S. Venture. Is it ok to pick up the power for the lamps off the power wire to the power outlet (cig lighter) the only thing I use the power outlet for is the GPS. The power outlet will already be fused and I'm wondering if I could eliminate the in line fuse to the lamps... then it would be much easier to get at if the fuse blows.... Terry
  4. For those that have fitted the passing lamps to their bikes, I'm wondering if you have any general guidance regards positioning the passing lamps correctly and aligning them....... Apologies if there is a post already regards this, but I was unable to locate it.
  5. I have a couple projects for my '06 RSTD where I have been told that I ought to wire the device straight to the battery, or words to that effect. The idea is to not tap into an existing wire, but to get closer to the original source of power. Air horns, where they need lots of juice to get really loud. My passing lamps, where I want to have them on regardless whether the headlight is on high or low beam. I'll wire a relay so that if the running lights are on, the passing lamps are on. My question is: how? How do I energize these? What is the physical connection, and where? Do you go into the fuse box, or splice a wire, or what? For the passing lamps and other front-end projects, how do you get the wire back to the battery? Do you remove the tank and find some sort of cable chase to run the wires? I suppose duct tape ain't the thing. I've delayed re-doing my passing lamps because of my lack of understanding, and I am buying myself a pair of Bad Boy air horns from Harbor Freight for Christmas. So I am hoping to spend between now and then understanding what to do and maybe doing the passing lamps. I'm not a dunce, but photos would be invaluable. But really, any help would be very appreciated. Dave
  6. Probably a dumb question...but are passing lamps for additional lighting, or are they for use just when passing...(Don't laugh too hard). Also...are they worth cost? And if installed by the dealer at time of purchase...if I request they be installed with a relay...will the dealer laugh at me. Thanks, Wally
  7. The wife asked me to give her a list of what I want Santa to bring me for x-mas, I would really like a set of passing lights for the scoot of my dreams that is sitting in the garage, I just can't for the life of me tell her the bracket and the lamps together cost 250 dollars. (ya know --three kids in college at the same time) Any one seen the lights and mounts cheaper any where? Ive looked on ebay and a couple stealer websites, all about the same price.
  8. Blowing off steam.... On my recent group ride to Arkansas, I started popping fuses on my passing lamps. I'd just rewired them recently to use a relay and direct connection to the battery, so I reckoned that's where the trouble lay. Then, on the last day, I lost my Gremlin Bell. Those suckers were determined to cause mischief! Last weekend, I tore apart the headlamp housing and looked at the relay set up. I also took apart the left passing lamp housing to look at the switch--that had shorted out before. Nothing seemed wrong, and when I put it back together, the lamps worked. Maybe a crimp? Today I looked and sure enough the passing lamps were off. The Gremlins were back. I tore everything apart that I had touched during the install and looked for smoky residue. I put in fuse after fuse, letting it pop while I looked for sparks. Nothing! Finally, I took apart the right passing lamp housing, and the wire was stuck to the back of the lamp bulb. Burned. That's where the short was, in something I'd never touched and had never been apart. Ugh! It was frusty, but still a nice way to spend an afternoon off. Dave
  9. I am ordering items for my winter projects and need some help. I have read the threads involving passing lamps and understand how to install, but here is where my dumbness comes in. I have an 06 beautiful black tour deluxe with a straight light bar which the turn signals connect horizontal at the ends. I want to add passing lamps but am confused. Every site I look at to order the lights and mounts show a curved light bar. Do I have to purchase this light bar? or do they make lights for the straight one? If so, do the passing lights come with the turn signals that hang underneath or am I suppose to do something with the stock ones. I just want to buy something and can't figure this out. It looks to me like the turn signals that are on the ends now would come out and the passing lights would go in there place, but I don't know. Really need help in buying. I just bought kromewerks slip on and want to buy all the lights, including Led for the rear, and possibly engine lights and want to have everything so I can do all the electric at one time with taking the saddlebags and gas tank off. I appreciate any help. Thanks Walt:bang head:
  10. Ok, just exactly HOW do you adjust these passing lamps for the UP and DOWN?? I can't see it.. Anyone able to shed some light on this.. ? Thanks in advance.
  11. I'm getting a set of the yamaha passing lamps soon. My question is this...I've read a lot of posts where you use a relay to hook them up. Is there a reason not to hook them up the way Yamaha says to?? Does it cause a problem if you don't use the relay??? :confused24:I understand that by using a relay you isolate the circuit and reduce the load on the headlight circuit.... and I'm sure that's better, but is it necessary??? Thanks folks....I'm sure someone will clear this up for me.
  12. Do the passing lamps make opening the fairing more difficult?
  13. Hi, my left front turn signal works but the left running light doesn't. I have passing lamps. I've tried replacing the bulbs, no luck. Any suggestions?
  14. Hi! I'm new to this website and also a new owner of an '05 RSV which I'm rebuilding from a salvage bike. I'm down to the last part - passing lamps. I saved the original passing lamp bar and turn signals hoping I could find another damaged one and swap out the parts. I did find an '07 passing lamp/bar but it seems to have different connectors for the turn signals. The old one has some kind of break-off-type cylinder (one of which is broken, of course) that connects the turn signal to the passing lamp above it. The "new" one has more of a solid type cylinder. Does anyone have any idea or experience with what I'm talking about here? I hope I can find the right break-off type cylinder or new adapter to mount the "new" lamp to my old bar or vice versa.... I thought all the 2nd generation RSVs had interchangeable parts!...??? I guess since the passing lamps are optional, then there are different configurations and different manufacturers. I don't really want to spend another $300 on a complete passing light set unless I can be assured it has the right connectors for the turn signals. I'd appreciate an assembly drawing if one exists, showing the connector between the turn signal and the passing lamp. Thanks,
  15. Those of you who have installed the Yamaha passing lamps may want to inspect the OEM glass fuse holder that is part of the wiring harness that comes with the lamps. I installed these lamps on my 06 RSTD this spring. I just completed a thousand kilometer vacation trip last week and had no problems, but last Sunday on a day trip I noticed my passing lamps were no longer working. The fused power lead was connected to the wiring harness inside the headlight housing so that is the first placed I checked. I discovered that the nylon OEM glass fuse holder had melted where the bottom of the glass fuse makes contact with the lower contact point. Fortunately the nylon fuse holder was tough enough to restrict the damage to the fuse holder housing itself and none of the other wires around it were damaged, but I had to use Channellock pliers to get it apart. I have since replaced the glass fuse holder with an automotive ATO fuse holder c/w weatherproof rubber cap. I also noted that the OEM glass fuse is rated at 10 amps whichs seems a bit high for the two lights that it powers. The red power lead looks a little thin for 10 amps. I have reduced the rating of the new ATO fuse to 5 amps and everything works just fine.
  16. SO I BIT THE BULLET AND INSTALLED MY "PASSING LAMPS" ON SUNDAY TOOK ME ABOUT 4 HOURS(FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER)..AND A SIX PACK OF "GUINESS".LOL...THANKS TO ALL OF THE "VRs" THAT OFFERED HELP.BUT I HAD TO TRY IT ON MY OWN.
  17. Does anyone have a pictorial for adding passing lamps online?
  18. I know I've seen it somewhere here. But, for the life of me I can't find it now. The instructions to installing passing lamps on my RSV. These are the yammy brand. Any help out there? Snow is almost all gone....with some luck we should be able to get the bikes out very soon!
  19. Just got my new '09 RSV last friday. Love the bike, even with th e few small delivery/set-up issues (Missing passenger intercom cable/connector)!! It's a real upgrade from the VTX I also own. I'm looking forward to "meeting" all of you here on the forum, and hopefully in the real world as well. Here's the question. I've seen a few threads that refer to "passing Lamps." I assume those are the same thing Honda riders call "Highway Lights." The small, but very bright additional lights on the front of the bike either above or below the turn signals. If I've got that right, let me ask... Are these something I should try and install myself, or is it better left to the service dept. to do for me. Also, with the Honda, a modification was necessary to allow these lamps to work with the Headlamp operating in High-beam mode. Is this true with th RSV as well? Waiting to hear from you all. Anybody close to me in North Texas? Thanks in advance. Troy Crow
  20. Hey Everyone.... I have looked and looked on the site and have not found anything about the following I got from the Star Touring Remedy List... Do NOT buy the Venture passing lamps. Instead, buy the V-Star halogen passing lamps. They will fit the Venture passing lamp mounts with no problem. Remove the red wiring from the switch in one of the lamp housings and wire it to the Venture lamp switch. Why do this? Unlike the sealed beams, the halogen lamps have a replaceable H3 bulb. Pull out the bulbs and keep them as spares. Purchase the PIAA or Silverstar Ultra H3 bulbs. They are still 35 watt bulbs (i.e. do not consume more power), but put out 70 watts of light. Passing lamps part no.: STR-4NK35-10-00 OK...$88.00 for the H-3 Lamps on this site fhttp://www.motorsportssupercenter.com/pages/newvehicles/viewlines/62/Yamaha_Lines.aspx for the Halogen passing lamps....Unless there is an EASY way to change the Passing Lamps...I did see some posts for the Adjure lights...ANYONE here do this mod?....I have done the Silverstar Bulb for the Headlight.... ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS....:confused24: George In Virginia...
  21. :detective:I want to install the factory passing lamps but wish to get them off the ignition switch. Relays have been mentioned and I wanted to know why a relay. Couldn't you wire direct to the accessory post and switch them as intended beside the 12 volt plug? Could some one go over the wiring from the start.
  22. I just had the dealership install OEM passing lamps on my '06 RSTD. I got home and wanted to show some friends and none of the head lamps were on. An investigation found the headlamp fuse blown. There was a spare 15 amp fuse, and I put that on. The main headlamp came on, and I discovered the passing lamps were toggled off. When I toggled them on, the fuse blew immediately. My question: should the combination of headlamp and passing lamps work with a 15A fuse? I have the halogen version ( STR-4NK35-10-01 ) of the passing lamps and the OEM headlight. Of course, the dealership didn't return any of the installation or operation information that came with the lamps so I don't know the current draw. They were working at the dealership but were dead when I got home. Maybe something broke loose and is grounding?
  23. I finished to receive the two LED's from e-bay that has both position lights and brakes. I forget the simplest thing when I order it about how the socket was facing to.... So, I get the light looking to the side metal piece instead of the red plastic. Did someone knows if there is any adapter made for 90º angle for 1157 lamps? Thanks in advance. I know that I saw in the past those lamps, but when you need it you never find where was their website. Again thanks, :crying::crying:
  24. Has anybody put the Yamaha Stratoliner Passing Lamps on their RSV? I used the search function but could not find any information. I would really like to see a photo of them installed. Also how is the beam pattern between the two bubls? I am hopeing to find a dual bulb lamp to fit my RSV, with a driving light pattern and a fog light pattern lamp in one housing. The Stratoliner Passing Lamps look like they might work.
  25. Went to my local Oriellys to purchase a replacment seal beam for my passing lamps. He did not have one that matched the 30W that came with them but said he could order one and they were priced at $30 each. I ask him if there was another one that would work. He checked his stock and came up with a Wagner 4411 Off Road Light that is a 35W. The Wagner Seal Beams were $8.99 ea. It will be interesting to see how long they last. Mavrick
