  1. Looking at a RSV in Big Bend, WI. Talked with a salesman. Anyone close and have the time to look at it in person? I'm about 5-6 hours away and have to work next two weekends (mandatory) Thanks Gil
  2. If you're interested, the bid closes in a few hours. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150412686108&viewitem=
  3. I thought this crap didn't happen in Texas. Of course everything's BIGGER in Texas so we can't just get snow that you can drive on, it had to rain all night first and then sleet for 4 hours so there's a 1/2 inch of solid ice on everything!! We're supposed to end up with 12-18" of snow.
  4. Got to visit the USS Midway yesterday. What they said would take us 2 - 3 hours, really took us 6 hours. Wow! what a machine.
  5. Friday morning 6AM I am having surgery.Wish me luck.
  6. to the unemployment line. The Company she worked for lost the contract so the new company came in and offered her a job but cut her hours big time. Also wanted her to start 2 hours earlier. We commute together and to a different city (40 miles return). She is a hard worker so I am sure she will find something, hopefully soon. Brad
  7. I am due for the 26,600 mile (42,000 Km) service. The maintenance manual says that at 26.6K, a valve clearance check and adjustment needs to be performed. I called my dealer and was estimated 3.5 hours of labor and $400. From his description of what should be done, it seems that they'll perform a 4,000 mile service. "It is a very thorough service", he said. Does this seem reasonable? Dave
  8. OK, You guys back east kept talking about snow and wished it on us on the west coast. Now I can not go for a ride. Cabin fever setting in fast and it has only been snowing for two hours, just enough on ground to make it slick. About an half an inch.
  9. Greetings and commiseratons to all you northern-hemisphere type people. At 5:47pm my time today (less than 5 hours ago) I was still outside in the yard doing things around the house. Didn't come inside until 8pm (just over 2 hours ago) when it was still daylight. Yep - today was the summer solstice for me. Sunrise was at 5:55am and sunset was 8:11pm. A whole 14 hours and 16 minutes of daylight. So where does the 5:47pm become significant? That's when old mother Earth went to the maximum on the old axis tilt and now she's heading back the other way. (You know - I swear I felt that slight hesitation, right at that time!) Now the days will be getting shorter for me, and getting longer for you. We had a fairly cool day today. It only got to 32degC (90degF). In six months time it'll be your turn for maximum daylight.
  10. Less than 15 hours left and it's at $33.52. Back Rest on eBay
  11. I have just completed a trip from Chicago, IL to Orlando FL to visit my daughter turning 13 this month. During my trip down south, several thoughts crossed my mind and I am writing to inquire as to whether any of you have any specific answers for the following questions: 1) How "catastrophic" would it be to hit a deer bounding into your path single riding at say 85 mph? I saw many dead deer along the sides of the road near the Tennessee mountains outside of Chattanooga, and wondered if a biker would survive. 2) I was forced to ride in the evening on strange roads, through Georgia. I kept wondering what would happen if I ran over a good sized pot hole. Anybody ever do that? 3) How does a bike behave with a blow out? Front tire? Rear tire? Can a single rider have any warning to try to handle the forces?? 4) Generally, what speed is acceptable with decent tires in the rain? I had several cars and tractor-trailors rush by me, but it was night, and drizzeling for hours and hours down to Florida. I made it safe and sound, took it relatively easy, but sometimes when it got real dark, and visibility was poor, my mind played lots of tricks on me. I "trusted" the overall road condition, and the statistical improbability of hitting a deer, pot hole, etc. Thank you for your true to life experiences. Sunrayman

    Rain

:rain2: :rain2: Now that it looks like the bike season is drawing to a close for us unfortunate northerners, and we have got to admit that this was one WET year.... I was wondering, what is the furtherest you have HAD to ride in the rain? Myself, before my Venture I had a VStar, I had gone on a trip and was on Manitoulin Island in a flyspeck of a town called Little Current, in a motel room the size of my garden shed (for the mere sum of $70!!) with the rain pouring and the Weather Channel saying rain for the next 2 days, unless you are south of Parry Sound. I might also add that 8 hours previous the Weather Channel had said sunny with cloudy breaks grrrrr! So I had no rain gear, but I threw on the leather jacket, said screw it and rode south. Went over a plank bridge with potholes that you could see the water below through, and it was slick as ice. No questions as to my heart working! After 6 hours, trucks up my arse, freezing so bad I went into full body shivers, pulling over to pour out my boots, hands and feet turning into white raisins, just not having fun!!! I arrived in Parry Sound for their freaking Music Festival (Who knew?) with all the motel rooms filled, except for the $150 per night, high end, over priced Days Inn. Spent the evening in the local laundromat watching my clothes spin in the dryer. So about 6 hours and about 300 miles for me, felt like an eternity.
  13. I just got back from completing my Saddlesore 1000 Iron Butt Ride. It was an amazing experience. I rode from Northern NJ (Morristown), left at 12:22 AM - met up with my buddy on the Turnpike and we arrived in Orlando, Florida at 7:37 PM, 1117.5 Miles. We had great weather and choose the hours perfectly and hit no traffic. We averaged 68 miles per hour (70 miles per hour moving average), and total time riding was 15 hours and 50 minutes. I wish to extend a special thanks to Rick Butler for modifications to my Saddlemen Seat. He made the seat so comfortable, that my saddle was not sore at all. Thanks Rick! Stuart
  14. My wife flew this past weekend to Denver to visit her sister. Playing around with MapSource, I saw that it was 1070ish miles from Houston to there. I'd wanted to ride an ironbutt for some time, so I took this opportunity and did it. I left Houston around 5AM on Thursday, headed to Lubbock for lunch. My son is a freshman at Texas Tech, and it was a chance to see him. Lubbock is about halfway on the route I'd plotted, so I figured it would take 9 hours to get there. I was about right, getting there about 2:30. We lunched at Orlando's Italian Restaurant, because Texas Monthly had recently judged their's the 10th best burger in Texas.[1] From there I went to Denver via Raton. I took this chance to try out the sheepskin I had bought at IKEA for $30. It rained most of the way to Lubbock, but was sunny from there out. Great sheepskin weather. Or so I thought.[2] Even though it wasn't raining, it was blowing hard. Hard enough that my bike thought I was doing 95mph and my mpg suffered. I saw another post today where someone gets more than 39mpg. I rarely will break 35mpg, and with the headwind and climbing in elevation, I got closer to 25mpg. The worst of the trip was the trip over Raton Pass. My legs hurt, I couldn't get comfortable, and the temperature dropped like a stone. My windscreen and headlamps were plastered with bugs when I finally pulled into Raton. I warmed up a little in the gas station and pressed on, within smelling distance of Colorado. I finally arrived at my sister-in-law's at 11:15 local, 12:30AM my time. I'd gone 1063 miles by the GPS, in 19.5 hours. They say it typically takes 18 hours, and I spent an hour with my son in Lubbock. I also stopped for gas about every 80 miles. My wife's flight was delayed, and she arrived 15 minutes after I did. She found me asleep in the rocking chair that I'd sat in to wait for her. LOL Even being tuckered, I woke up on auto-pilot at 8AM. By 10AM, my wife and I were heading to Wyoming for lunch. And to "color in my map". I planned to hit WY, NE, and KS, but we ran short of time--dinner was waiting. Had I pushed a little harder, I could have made the 1500 miles in 36 hour "Butt Burner". Oh well. The next day, Saturday, I headed home. I went out of my way to pick up Kansas. That's a pretty state. With no need to push it, I stopped at Wichita Falls, TX. I'd been in CO, KS, OK, and then TX. I like riding at night, so I was tempted to push on. But when I saw the ETA creep over 2AM, and I kept getting hit by large wet bugs, I stopped. Sunday was an easy ride home. Got there around 2PM. Final tally for the trip was 2637 miles. Notes: [1] - No way is that the 10th best burger in TX. Texas Monthly is plain wrong. They also gave something like 15 of the best burgers to Austin, and practically ignored Houston. This would be closer to the 50th spot in any list I made. I ought to do that. [2] - The sheepskin. Yeah, it's wrong for me when I am using luggage. It's nice and cushy to start, but then it pushed me to ride on the tank. It also rode up and pressed on my tailbone. I was much happier ignoring it when riding with the luggage, and sticking with my "Butt Butler" seat. That is comfy all day long. Pictures follow. If you want to see bigger versions, I can scare up a link to my Flickr account. Dave
  15. Looks as if the weather is gonna cooperate!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone ride safe and see ya in a few hours in Rome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. Well, since she only had about 2 hours, not too many pics http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20Huntsville%20AL%2020090905/
  17. This gives new meaning to "stuck at home": From my visit to the Huntsville Meet and Eat on Saturday 5 Sep 09, I rode the 4 hours up mostly in the rain. I rode the 4 hours back always in the rain and I guess it never stopped raining at my house and this is the result on my return. I'm flipping stuck! http://lh4.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SqUmjeahi_I/AAAAAAAAA1Q/29--PzI1mrc/s640/0905091821.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SqUmjlAfO_I/AAAAAAAAA1U/0_vbCFWQUI0/s640/0905091822.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SqUmjtWxjEI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/OuVOQcgZ4HI/s640/0905091822a.jpg I gradually dug my way out in about 45 minutes. Just thought you might find this interesting. Can't remember when I've had more fun.
  18. Well, here it is 10:30 and I still need to load the VentureRanger for the trip north. Did get all the grocery shopping done and the back of the truck is dragging dirt. Just to let everyone know, Stardborg and Red1 are on their way to the PIP. Still haven't heard from a few others that threatened to show up. But we live in hope. Better shut this down and get ready to hit the road. See ya'all in a few hours.
  19. I'm sorry if this is a old subject but after a lot of looking around on the site I've not seen a thing about Back Braces, I'm sure I'm not the only rider out there that has a lower back ache after a few hours in the saddle?? I have a VStar 1100 Silverado that I put a Ortho Gell Pad in the seat and it did help a little but still after a few hours and a couple of days later my lower back ached terrible! I purchaced a 03 RSV a few months ago and it is a lot more comfortable than the VStar!! I've been looking and sent Rick Butler a personal message asking about making my present seat more comfortable, I've also been checking out the lower back braces, the KoolBak Motorcycle brace has some pretty good reviews. I'm sure that some of you guys/gals have a suggestion or opinion?? I had a 86 Venture about 20 years ago and I didn't seem to have the problem then, but, I'm 20 years older!!:shock3:thanks in advance for any ideas.. Larry M
  20. Need to make a little correction here. It is only 5, yes 5 days before the 2009 Pork in the Pines Pig Roast kick off. The festivities start Friday, September 4th with the Chili social. Depending on how the cooking goes, the social will probably get under way about 7pm and go until the wee hours of the morning. Cook can't stay up too late though... Needs to be up bright and early (well, at least early) to get breakfast started Sat morning. And, if anyone has a special request on how you want your eggs, you better get em in quick. :rotfl:
  21. Brenda and I have experimented with various cups and drink containers with somewhat disappointing results. I hate it when the water in my bottle is as hot as I am. I want it cool. And, I don't like the "sippy cup" style of containers because I want to drink and drive. Losing sight of the road when I tilt my head back to drink is not the excitement I'm looking for. We have found a Thermos with a straw that will hold ice for 24 hours! The straw lets me drink without losing sight of the road. The flip-top is a one hand operation. I always finish the 18 oz in the Thermos before the ice is gone - have found ice still in the Thermos after 24 hours! It is a Thermos Intak Steel Hydro bottle and is available online or at Target for $21.95 Check out a picture on my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2219859&id=639519006 Lynn http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2219859&id=639519006
  22. Last minute thought. Maybe you have a good area to ride. Me and a buddy are planning on riding Thursday and Friday leaving from Fredericksburg Va. We are about 3 hours from Gettysburg or about 3 plus hours from Seneca Rocks. We have been around Snowshoe and Cass area. We have been to the bride in West Va as well. In Pa we have been to the Lancaster area and been through Gettysburg. Anyone have any good loops, roads or sites to see in one of those general areas. We figure it will be cooler in the mountains. 23. I was at the Honda shop today getting a new tire and talked to a SC HP biker. He was riding a ST 1300. He was getting a tire also. We talked about him giving out tickets on the Interstates. He was kinda funny telling me stories of almost getting run off the road and people doing dumb stuff. Riding a bike all day long increases your chances of wrecking I guess. He told me someone actually flicked a cigarette out the window and hit his windshield on the bike. Of course, he blue lighted them and fined them for littering. I stayed there at the Honda shop for 6 hours waiting on that new tire. I'll tell ya why it took 6 hours but I need to go pack for Vogel, yee haa.
  24. Am looking at buying some Road King Pipes the # is 65547-09 can some one tell me if this is a non catalytic type pipe? I am within a couple of hours of the sale and cant find any info on the numbers.

    LEDs

I was bleeding all the fluids on the 86 during the Monsoon rains that we have been having and noticed that 1 of my LEDs was dim. I had another one and replaced it. On further inspection I have 2 more dim ones and 1 that is completely out. What gives? I was under the impression that the lifespan of LEDs was quite a few hours of operation. Mine might have a total of 30 hours on them. Is anyone else experiencing low lifetime on their LEDs.
