  1. Hi y'all. I just noticed these today, these round things on the sides of the hydraulic fluid reservoirs for my front brake and for my clutch. It appears as if these may actually be windows designed for easy checking of fluid levels inside the reservoirs. I can't confirm this though because there seems to be 24 years of hardedned road grime on these windows. I haven't attempted to clean them yet for fear of using too much pressure on them and causing breakage. I was wondering what the best way to clean these would be and if it's actually safe to do so.
  2. So, I get a new pair of Avons Venoms put on. Love 'em, feel great all the way home from the shop. I decide I might as well clean the beast, so I get out the Mr. Clean Car Wash and scrub it down. (By the way, don't y'all just love that Mr. Clean?) I am admiring the new rubber when whats this? a dam defect in the tires? Looks like a tiny slice in the edge .... WTF.... I'm pissed... store is closed... I'm ranting and raving... when I look closer,................ its the dam SNAKE HEAD trademark molded into the tire ...... HAD TO LAUGH!!!
  3. Through the winter didn't have the problem - but now that it's warming up, the problem is back. When I go over bumps the right channel quits working. Then sometimes it will come back on over other bumps. I've taken the radio out and looked at the connetions - they look clean. I was thinking about putting dielectric grease in the connections to see if it would help.
  4. My son-in-law has an 1980 Yamaha XS850G that he has let sit a couple of years. He enjoys the bike but is not mechanically inclined and funds are a concern. We are working to get the bike running again this year for his birthday. The starter quit, and he parked it at that point. My plans are: Remove and clean out the tank, fresh fuel Remove and clean the carbs Sync the carbs Track down the starter issue - I'm guessing the solenoid but need to test it. Install new battery Here's where I'm hoping for some input and ideas. The mufflers have lost the back end, making them straight pipes and too loud. I don't know much about muffler systems. Can the current pipes be repaired by putting in new baffles? Should I replace them? Many here have used mufflers off of Harleys, is this an option? Is it conditional on the pipe diameter? I'm not sure I know enough to ask all of the questions I need to ask. Please let me know any info I need. Dave:detective:
  5. After struggling through the "longest winter ever" we now have good enough weather to bring the bikes out from storage. There had to be at least 50 or more bikes travel down the highway past my place today, I also decided to begin my 2008 season. Uncovered my clean bike, installed the fully charged battery, wheeled it out of my garage and after 3 attempts to start, it fired up. Without any warning, gasoline started spraying out onto the ground from behind the leftside air breather. Unfortunately I didn't realize I had the gas leak soon enough to prevent major damage to the asphalt surface of the driveway, a lot of gas sprayed out. NOT IMPRESSED!!!!!! I took off the left side cowling to see where the gas was coming from. There is an open ended rubber tube that is not connected to the breather but is secured to the plastic housing. I cranked the engine once again and witnessed without view obstruction, this is the source of the gas leak. Of course this is Saturday late afternoon, the bike shop is closed til Monday and I am no mechanic, so I washed the bike, wheeled it back into the garage and did my best to clean up the fuel that was eating up my driveway. Can anyone explain why this happened??????? Thanks in advance!
  6. Well, after an evening last night of prepping the office/ new work space, put the bike in there last night for the motor removal. Had to do some errands and work today, so about 4:30ish I got the final start on the engine removal. This was after an hours conversation with RandyA (Thanks Randy!) on the depth and scope of my problem and with great words of encouragement. To make a short project long, I went ahead and decided to remove the rear subframe and parts. I had long ago decided, and finally made the move, to strip and clean the bike. I mean, what the heck, whats another month in this process. Also, I believe the first time I meet you guys face-to-face, with a clean and painted engine, and a filthy and scratched frame and no maintenance done to it, I figured I'd be in TROUBLE!!!!! So like Dad taught me, if you're gonna do a job for yourself, do it all the way, do it right, and take three times as much as it should to get it done! Well, to make a brief history of it, here's Randy's diagnosis with just a conversation. I tend to agree with him. With it kicking out of 2nd only at high torque (WOT 1 up, riding 2 up, mid to 3/4 throttle), he has suggested that it may only be the thrust washer that is worn and may not be any damage to the gears themselves. It is my sincere hope that he is correct, so that more energies (and Money) can go towards other areas of the bike. For my initial investment of 600 bucks for the bike, and the money I've spent so far, I'll end up with about 1500 in her, with everything but a paint job done. I don't believe that's too bad a deal. But, I emphasize, it is not done without the considerable help and time of people from this site that has made it possible. That part is incalculable. But the time I spend working on my bike will only help me understand the finer workings and be able to reciprocate my knowledge to those others that may need it. Well, here are a couple pics from the glorious moment: The young man is my son, Nic
  7. I think this must have gotten lost in the crash of '06, or maybe deleted in the latest clean up. How do I change this, "http://www.venturerider.org" to this, "VentureRider"? Sorry to repeat this question. Thanks in advance.

How much did you pay for the LED wing and to paint it? The cheapest I saw the wing for was around $200.00. I have a 99 with the same color combo and would like to do that to mine. I also like the white walls. Thats a clean looking bike.
  12. As the leaves are falling and the tempatures are droping I look at Jacks bike sitting in the driveway and know that I have to clean the bike before it get put into the garage for the winter. We have used just simple green all summer long to do the regular cleaning and now that it time to put her away I want to make it look like the day that we bought it. So what is the best wax cleaner to make it shine. I have to get this done today before the hunting season starts on Thrusday because all my spare time will be out in the woods with my daughters. Any help will be apperciated Thanks Jessie P.S. No smart alleck comments about me having to clean the bike because I know there will be some lol

  14. Folks...I REALLY like this trike. I think it is overpriced by about $25,000.00 or so but that's beside the point. I just love the old school look and it looks like it would be a blast to drive. Very clean lines. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-EXILE-CYCLES-TRIKE_W0QQitemZ200170040593QQihZ010QQcategoryZ6719QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

  16. With three bikes and four cars at our house, my fall project has been to make a place to protect and secure the bikes, have them on the battery tenders and still have a place to keep Jan and my cars out of the snow. The boys get to scrape and clean off their cars. I must just have too much stuff!! This is what I've come up with:

  18. I can buy a very clean 87 for $2500 But 86000 on the clock. Yes the bike is very clean and looks to have been well taking care of. Man i don't know? jerry
  19. Hi Guys: I think I know the answer to this already, BUT -- I have an '84 Venture that has sat for a while. I DID take off, disassemble and clean as best I could, all 4 carbs. She's back together now, starts right up, but will only run with the choke left on. I have added Sea Foam to the tank and have been running it in hopes that it will work its way through the system and eventually clean out whatever I didn't get. What are my chances that WILL happen? Or if anyone has any other tricks that might work, please chime in. Thanks in advance.

    Cleaning your Chrome

Cleaning the bits of road tar, melted plastic, or rubber off from the bottom of your passengers soles, even the bluing caused from too rich a mixture (running the bike with choke on too long) can be a difficult task to clean off the chrome pipes of your bike. So I would like to offer up the method I have found to be successful in returning chrome to it's show room finish. Using a small artist's brush spread "Lepage Super Strippa" a semi-gel paint and vanish remover onto the chrome area to be cleaned. Leave on for approximately 10 minutes. Then using "Super Fine 0000" steel wool rub the area with back and forth strokes removing any unwanted material, wipe area clean with a soft cloth, repeat all of the above if necessary. After you have removed the unwanted material to your satisfaction, then dampen a clean soft cloth with acetone and wipe down all the chrome for a show room finish. Warning!!!!!!! Apply this method to COLD chrome only. Both the Varnish Remover and Acetone are highly flammable and will drastically harm paint and plastic. Caution!!!!! Use only Super Fine 0000 (4 zero's) steel wool anything less than 4 zero's will mark the chrome.
  21. I'm looking for tips on how to clean up the seat and the plastic on my '83. The Plastic: I saw Tnventurer's tip on mop & glow, but was wondering how to prep for it. There's old wax that's whitened and otherwise dull coating on the plastic. Any recommendations on something that can clean it up before I try the mop & glow? The Seat: It's in good shape structurally (original brown) but has different patches of crud on it and some sticky spots. Not sure if this is deterioration of the original finish or accumulated residues. Any suggestions on how to clean it up without damaging the seat cover? Thanks for any suggestions.
