1. How often do you need to put air in your shocks? Just wondering the average miles or time. Rod
2. Let me explain what has happened so far. Wife and I rode 3200 miles from CA to NC at the very last stop of the trip before our destination we came out from lunch and found a puddle of fluid below the drain tubes near the rear shock. The wife thought it was water but when I touched it there was an oiliness to it. From then on the ride was rough and the bike felt low in the rear end. Once we got to our destination I checked for dealerships nearby and found Forsyth Motosports in Winston Salem. I called them and spoke to the service manager named Alan. He "sounded" like he was familiar with the Venture so I took it up there. That was on Thursday. On Friday I had not heard from him so I called him. He stated that he had aired up the shock and it was holding air. When I asked him how much air he said 7.0 psi. I told him that was the limit (actually 7.1) for the front shock and that the rear was 50 something. He said that 7.0 psi is what the service manual said. I told him that 7.0 was wrong and that I would look it up and get back to him (should have been my first clue). I have an electronic version of the service manual (thank you for having posted that on this forum) and I pulled it up, read it thoroughly than called him back. I gave him the reference page (2014) and he read it. He than he told me which page he had gotten his information from (3046). I read it and noted to him that the psi was wrong because how could it be 50 kpa on the front and 400 kpa on the rear yet the psi was lower on the rear. I had to explain to him that it was an obvious misprint (should have been my second clue). He than agreed to pump it up and see if it held. On Saturday I called him again and he stated that it had not lost pressure and that the was no evidence that the shock was bad. By than I finally figured out that I was wasting my time and needed to get my bike the hell out of there (thanks to those who replied to my earlier question). When got there and talked to him he stated that he had removed the boots (bs cause I have a tie wrap holding my air horn line that would have had to been cut and was not) and had not found any evidence of oil and that the oil was actually from the air box. When I aked him if there was ANY air in the shock before he pumped it up he said yeah very little but that when you took the air pumpoff you always lose a few pounds (hmmm must not have correct air pump tool as I don't ;lose any with my progressive pump). When I asked him where the air (I travel at 42psi) had gone and copuld it have displaced the lost oil he gave me a blank look and said "oh that could have happened". He also stated that he did not want to do the work and find out the shock was not the problem an have Yamaha bill him back for a new shock and the labor. At this point I got my bike and got the hell out of there. I will say that he did not charge me for adding air to my blown shock. I stopped in the parking lot and checked the oil level. It was at 3/4 of the glass. The exact same as when I changed the oil before the trip out here. I also checked the boot as best as I could and found a small trace of oil on the left side (keep in mind that we rode another 175 miles and through some very heavy rain after we found the puddle). On the way home I noted that the bike rode hardern than usual (I have 32,000 miles on this bike so I kind of know it. So here I am in NC and still needing to get back to CA riding two up. This shock is blown, I have spoke with my friend Rod in San Diego and he confirms it. I have posted a question on the tech forum and the replies also confirm and lastly I have ridden this bike and that confirms it. i am to the south of Winston Salem and must find a dealer nearby that will use some common sense and get this shock replaced so I can get back home. The following dealerships seem to be my choices Great Western Motorcycles in Statesville, NC Midway Yamaha in Thomasville, NC Interstate Cycle in Cornelius, NC Ridenow Powersports Concord in Concord, NC Any one have any dealing with any of these dealers service departments and how do I convince them that this shock is blown and needs to be replaced. Thanks for your assistance on this. I want to get back on the road and get on home before the summer is over if you know what I mean.
3. If the rear shock has puked out oil will it still old air pressure? I am almost sure that the rear shock puked its oil and have the bike at a dealership. They said they pumped are pumping it up and seeing if it holds air. Want to make sure they are doing it right as originally he only put 7.0 psi in it because that is what the service manual said. Fortunately I have the E version of the service manual and was able to educate him. He said he would pump up to the 57 psi and see if it held. If it will hold air with the oil puked out how do I convince them it won't hold oil and it is shot?
4. I have a 84 Venture Royal everytime I hit a bump in the road it feels like the front shock bottoms out. Maybe low on oil it the front shocks ? just dont know anything about it just bought it last Saturday they have plenty of air in them. Any ideas?
5. I noticed since I got my 07 Venture out this year that I have what seems to be an exhaust smell in the driver's area from time to time. My wife does not notice it at all in the passengers seat. So today I checked a few things out and here is what I found. I discovered I have small exhaust leaks at both of the "Y" crimped connections. I removed the tank and discovered oil seepage around the left front carb boot where it connects to the air box. Needless to say there shouldnt be oil up there. I removed the air box and checked inside and found oil in the air box. It appears to have been sucked in from the crankcase vent. There was more on the left side than on the right. I cleaned everything up and put it back together. I remembered reading on this site about what happens if the engine oil level is to high. Mine was pretty much at the top mark so I drained a bit of oil out until it was at mid level. I have not had a chance for a test ride yet as it has been pouring rain all day I run two cans of seafoam thru each year at the beginning and end of season The carbs are in sync All of this leads to a few questions which I am hoping someone can help with. Could the oil level be what caused the oil in the airbox or do I have another problem? Would the oil being sucked in also give me the exhaust smell I have been experiencing? It sounds like leaking "Y" connections are quite common as they are crimped and not welded. Would they cause the exhaust smell? Should I be after Yamaha to replace them or will the new ones be any better? Because some oil could has been sucked in should I clean the carbs somehow. I thought about dumping some seafoam into the intake of each carb and let it work its way thru. Is that a good idea? Lots of questions I know. Thanks in advance for any and all advise. Jim
6. Good Morning. Was looking for some advice/experience on this. I'm in the process of trading up from an RSTD to a Venture. Test rode the Venture on Sat. What an amazing ride! Wife is Very happy with this bike. Seemed like there was much less wind on me while riding the Venture vs RSTD (clearly due to the full fairing). My concern is that in hot/humid weather it may be too hot/not enough breeze to ride. Any thoughts/experiences from the fellow Venture riders out there? One of the things I love about the RSTD is that is stays cool even in humid August 90+ degrees days. I do have a tendency towards heatstroke (not good on a bike, nor a good quality for a biker...) so I have to keep an eye on this stuff. Also, I noticed in Yamaha's accessories book, a Tinted Lower Wind Vent that is supposed to direct air into the engine/leg area. Anyone have any experience with these? Any thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated ! Thanks! Bob
7. I read all the post on breaking your reservoir to the rear breaks, and even tried the 16 mm and 14 mm wrench idea. But this bolt was stuck. This is what I did and it worked slick!!! After exhausting all the ideas I saw here I fired up the air compressor and pulled out my 3/8 drive impact and at LOW air pressure I held the resv. with the 16mm wrench and gave it a quick burst with the impact and spun it right off. Caution: I think I took a chance but from experience I thought it would work and it did. But I have used this technique with other projects, just not pot metal which breaks easy. So if you try this use Low pressure and a wrench to back up the resv. Second thing, HOW in the world do you all get the pucks out of the break housing??
8. Unless I'm losing my mind I read a couple weeks ago some posts about a seat cover that a few guys were saying good things about. It's filled with air. Now I can't find the posts. Any idea if I saw it here or not?
9. First of all just a reminder that you might want to check your air filters for the new riding season. I myself seem to always over look them when changing out plugs or doing other maintenance to my bike. I am now wondering if this is part of a lower gas mileage I also noticed on inspection of these OEM filters that the top tap (spacer) was missing on my original filters. was that added later?... I also wonder if there is a better price for OEM filters at any other place? $29.04 for each filter. not sure if I want to bother with K&N yet.. Filters looked pretty good at 3,500 miles on them and now with 11,350 on it , this is what they looked like. Just thought I would share this... Jeff
10. I'm getting close to pulling the proverbial trigger on a 2nd gen, most likely will be a '99-'02 with around 25k miles give or take a few. I had a seller this weekend advise me that I would probably need to replace the rear shock on his bike. This, of course, sent me surfing off to venturerider.org to search for more information. So, it looks like the rear shocks may be a problem on these bikes from reading all the threads about it. And I guess even if it's not "busted" a 10 year old shock with 25k miles on it could be considered suspect. Should I just plan on replacing the rear shock as a routine maintenance on any used RSV I get? Or are there lot's of them working fine and I'm just seeing the internet show up all the problems and not too many of the NO-problems? None of the other used bikes I'm looking at have mentioned the rear shock, but maybe they just don't know it's bad? I'm thinking I should just include $500 on top of the cost of the bike and plan on getting a new shock. In looking at replacements, looks like the Works Performance is preferered by many and I've already sent an email requesting more info from Rick at Buckeye Performance. I have a nice built to order shock on my KLR650 and I love it. It made a huge difference in the off road handling. I guess OEM and Progressive are two other choices, any others? Is the OEM the only one that is air adjustable? This seems like a nice feature since I could be carrying 200 or more extra pounds when riding two-up and loaded for a trip. Seems like it would be nice to be able to adjust the shock with air. If the aftermarket shocks aren't air adjustable, do you adjust your preload depending on how you are riding? Can one adjustment be used for solo, two-up, and two-up loaded with gear? I appreciate all your advice and help as I search for a bike! Thanks to you sharing your knowledge and this wonderful site, I fell like I will be making a well informed decision.
11. Hey guys I just added a new set of running lights to the bike. I wanted to move my pegs forward and down some more. I found these lights which are LED's and figured they would mount perfectly into the air vents and be totally out of the way. The air vents are still functional (if they actually do any good) and the lights are in the way of nothing. You can see in the pic of my bike how much lower I was able to get my peg down as the other side still had the old light in place at the time I took the pic. Let me know what you think. Paul
12. Hey guys see alot of post aboout air preasure in front forks but cant find why its bad to run more than 7lbs anyone care to explain thanks
13. Now i know someone posted this before but, you know how it works, i can never find things when i need them so please bear with me. Does anyone know who makes an air pump with a gauge to be used on the shocks. I need it to be small enough to carry with me. i would like to try different pressures while i'm on the road to find the best combination. Thanks everyone and have a safe summer
14. Thanks to Sleeperhawk for my first Chrome on the new ride. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SfZNMX1PxRI/AAAAAAAAAs0/oHCJDwpnC14/1stChrome.jpg Rear air assist valve stem cover. I love it.
15. Hello All, I have a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe that is leaking gas from the air cleaner. Last year I had this same issue but it was from the opposite side. The local shop said that they needed to put in a new needle and seat and then charged $700.00. Although, 45 days latter the same thing occurred again and they said that they had perform the same service, claiming bad fuel is the issue. So my riding season came to an end for the rest of the year because I did not want to spend an additional $700. With that said, can anyone provide any tips or suggestion to resolve this ongoing problem? I am mechanically incline, never worked on a bike but I have built a 12 sec, in the 1/4 mile, Lincoln Towncar. Thank you in advance!!!
16. I just installed this, BUT... How do you tighten the 1/2" nut that sits behind the air nut? I don't have a wrench thin enough to do this. Any suggestions? Thanks.
17. Well here it is... another chapter in my "Carbon Fibre It" saga... I completed one of the air box covers... waddya think?
18. Thought I would post a photo of the stick on chrome I put on the air box last night. What do you guys think? Go ahead I can take it! I chose this stick on cause it looks like a screen for an actual air intake. I had to move it a little forward (off center) because of the two little tabby's that stick off of the back of it.
19. OK, I looked through the archives and couldn't find anything specific to the E2 error on the CLASS system. Here is the scenario, bike is a '89 with about 75k miles and tons of service records since new: When airing up the rear shock using the automatic setting of the CLASS, the pressure never gets above 35 psi for the rear shock. At about this range the pressure stops rising and the controller goes to E2 and cycles after 5 seconds to reset. E2 error code indicates that the controller does not detect a rise in pressure with the compressor running. The compressor runs and sounds relatively healthy, I really don't have a reference to compare. Here is what I have done so far: Re-soldered the CLASS controller, didn't find any broken solder joints, but re-soldered anyway Serviced the desiccant, found it to be pink in color, heated in the microwave until dark blue, checked the filters and replaced the O-rings in the container and lines Found the air intake filter almost disintegrated, disconnected the airlines and forced the compressor to run, replaced all the O-rings, cut a new air intake filter and re-installed Checked the valve block and pressure sensor, disconnected the air hoses and cleared the passages with the compressor Check all electrical connection, disconnected, cleaned and greased connection, checked for battery voltage at compressor Checked for pinched air hoses to the rear shock, disconnected hoses and manually inflated shock. The funny thing is that I can manually block the air fitting for the rear shock at the valve block and the pressure will rise up to 71 psi without any problems. I tried airing the rear shock up using the manual feature and if I let the compressor just run for a few seconds the pressure will ultimately begin rising. I can even get the rear shock up to 85 psi this way. But with the automatic function the pressure will not go past 35 psi with timing out into E2. Has anybody encountered this before? I know the air suspension on these bikes is touchy, but it drives me nuts. Two-up I really like running 71-75 psi in the rear, running this solo almost breaks my already damaged back. Has anybody a know good compressor and valve block laying around to verify that the problem is in this area? Thanks in advance for all your comments, Klaus
20. Well since I'm new hear. My name is Jeff , I live about 20 miles south of Wichita KS on 81. I own an 83 XVZ12TK, an 81 Honda CB900F Super Sport and an 80 Suzuki GS1000L/G, so as you can tell I like the older bikes. I rescued the Venture this past winter from a non-mechanic for a measly $600, it has a little over 37k on it. He said the rear shock wouldn't hold air so he hung it from his garage rafter by a chain and attempted too take it apart he took the air box off and left the carbs exposed for 4 yrs and where he had it at had a leak in the roof and dripped onto the throttle at the grip and when I gave it a twist I heard and felt a snap snap so now I need cables as well . But what I need to know is, where I can find a carb rebuild kit/kits? I've always redone my motorcycle carbs in boiling water then blew them out with an air compresser, sprayed them out with starting fluid to remove access water, let them sit for a day or 2 then put them back together and to this date I haven't had any problem, but with these carbs being exposed for 4 years that might not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. SSL
21. I have a 87 venture that i traded for. It runs good, but the class system is not working properly. I have searched the forum and found out how to fix the E1-E4 problems. I purchased a owners manual for this bike off of ebay. There is now mention of how to operate the leveling system. It shows how to put air in the front and rear. My questions are: where do i find info on how to use the class system? And do I still have to manually put air in the front forks and rear shock? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
22. I installed an air horn on my VR today. Took it for a spin and I noticed the turn signals didn't work. If I turn on the hazard switch and turn it off again, then the signals work as they should. Till I turn them on again anyway. When I got back home I noticed that if I leave the hazards on and then turn on the signals the horn goes off. I'll have to undo what I did before tomorrows ride.
23. Im in the procees of lower my front end and have followed the steps listed here ( i thought) but does the front air shock air valve suppost to be below the triple tree??? see photos
24. Today, Ron and I rode the bike to Harbor Freight. We found this nice high volume, 100psi, 12volt portable air compressor for $19.99 on sale. It is a nice compact size with all metal construction, with a quick disconnect coil hose and a nice straight air valve end. Comes with a nice carrying case. It is only 5 1/2" long, 2 inches wide, and 5 inches high. Thought I would share this with you. Yama Mama

DC Power outlet

Where is the best location for a DC power outlet on the 1st Gen? Does the scoot generate enough power to run shch equipment as an air pump or other simple electrical devices? Would a power converter work on it to produce 110V?
