Auestion for the Truck Drivers Out There (about passing)
SilvrT replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
It totally boggles my mind why any driver who passes someone IMMEDIATELY moves back into the lane, especially when the roads are wet ... some it seems just can't wait. -
A cushman scooter blowing away an 1800VTX or a Superglide??? I gues I have a lot to learn about scooters LOL

http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=19208&highlight=risers I just can't seem to find the post I did with the pics. I always have difficulty searchin for my own stuff LOL

No problemo with the risers... I installed mine no issues with the cables at all and the rubber spacers I was able to install upside down. Somewhere there is some more info on risers including some pics, etc that I posted.

I have been looking at a few full helmets but the problem I have is weight. Anything that's just a wee bit too heavy will cause problems with my neck. Any idea what the weight of this particular helmet is? EDIT: I found it.... "The Zeus 508 in size XL is a bit on the heavy side at 1741 grams (3 lbs. 13.5 oz"

Interesting so many talk about the vibration of the new Ultra. I assume the reference to "new" is a 2009. Well, I've road tested them 3 different times and 2 of the 3 showed hardly any vibration at all when idling...at least none that bothered me and once rolling, basically none at all. In fact, I get more "buzz" in my handlegrips on my RSV than what I noticed on the Ultra. As for engine heat, I can't comment coz I never really felt any but then again, the outside temps were only 20 degrees celcius. The one that did vibrate when idling was quite obvious but it really didn't bother me coz one doesn't sit idling that long. That's an interesting thing tho...and I've watched for this many times whenever I see an Ultra at a stop light...some vibrate like crazy while others are relatively smooth. Maybe that's a parallel to the RSV's... some have the clutch whine/chirp while others don't.

I said I would have gone back but, years ... no, ages ago I was driving my car and coming towards me was an 18 wheeler. Off to the left, in a field were two larger dogs running and playing and they were heading toward the road. Now, this was a rural residential area so those dogs were somebody's loved pets. The first dog got to the edge of the road and stopped, looked back at the other dog and then bolted.... right into the path of the semi which, by then, was almost even with me (maybe 50 feet away). I saw it all happen right before my eyes...I was stunned....I remember yelling to that dog before it bolted to STAY...it was if I could see what was going to happen before it happened. Me and the semi passed each other and I watched...well, I won't go into details what I saw in my side view mirror but that sight will never be forgotten. I was sick to my stomach about that dog for a long time. Did I go back? NOT ON YOUR LIFE. Should I have gone back? WHY? Did the semi driver stop? NOPE...why would he? The dog was obliterated. There are times when you should probably go back and times when it would be fruitless and other things take precedence. "you" be the judge. I believe craigr did the right thing under the circumstances and frankly, I don't care what anyone thinks about that.

I've had my RK's on for a few month's now and they had all the baffles so today, I drilled all 3 of them out. Well, does she ever BARK now when I crank it on! Under normal riding, they're not that much louder and the funny thing is, before I drilled them, the sound seemed to come more from under me than behind the bike...now, the sound seems more behind the bike. I LOVE IT! If you got RK's with the baffles and want a bit more rumble and some great BARK, drill out those baffles! :thumbsup2:

One of the MAIN factors in choosing would be that my better half likes it and for her it would be comfort as the first thing. So that dictates that it has to be a good 2-up tourer. Next it would be looks and I think she is in tune with me on this... I just do not like the looks of either the GW, the BMW, or the Vision. So, that leaves either the RSV, the Kaw Voyager or the HD Ultra for us. Rule out the Voyager coz there's a lot of things that seem "cheap" or flimsy about that bike even tho it has some very up-to-date features. Now, you did say "Lets say you had the cash to get what ever touring bike you wanted " so, I would buy the fanciest, most powerful Ultra I could get. Why? Because, after all, it is the "Ultra" machine of the two left (HD & RSV) and since I had the cash to get whatever I wanted, it's highly likely I'd also have the cash to keep it in top notch condition even after the warranty expired. hmmmmmm now where is that lotto ticket I bought for last Saturday's draw?????

What he said and put me on the list ABOVE him. As for stopping/not stopping, don't feel bad about that... you did what was right for you. Myself ... I would have gone back ... but that's just me. Few years ago I was riding down a busy 4 lane street and we came to a stop light and there was this little dog scooting in and out of the traffic like he was lost and there was something about the motorcycle that seemed "familiar" because he came right up to us. My passenger got off and picked the dog up and took it over to the sidewalk while I parked the bike... then we proceeded to find the owner .... didn't but found a person who knew the dog and the owner and they took it in to keep it safe.

Our family (Nina, me & our kids) LOVE ribs and we've been "ribbing" (pun intended) each other for 2 years now about who's got the best ribs so, about 6 month's ago we decided to hold our 1st annual Rib-Off contest. All the kids came along with their "signigicant other" (those who currently have one LOL) plus a few other close friends of ours and theirs. Basically there were 4 contestants (would have been 5 if my son, who basically pushed to have this contest initially hadn't forgotten to bring his "famous" ribs LOL). One couple (close friends of our kids) are not cooks so they arrived with a rack of ribs with no idea how to cook them LOL. Everyone else's ribs were "pre-prepared" and I had to do a quick job on this raw rack...thankfully they arrived early enough. My own consisted of 3 racks using a chipotle sauce for one, a honey-garlic sauce for the other and Sailor's "rum ribs" sauce for the 3rd. Nina did "her thing" and one of her daughters brought some awesome ribs done in a slow cooker. Sorry Sailor, neither your "rum ribs" recipe nor my concoctions were good enuf....the couple that came with the "raw rack" with no idea what to do wound up being the winners! It was pretty funny them having no idea, not a clue how to cook ribs to wind up winning....they said they had no idea cooking ribs was that easy (LOL .... I did the cooking). I think the quality of the meat was a bit better and the fact that the ribs were "fresh cooked" played a big part in the result. A great party we all had, a lot of beer, wine, rum, coolers were consumed and needless to say, I have felt a LOT better than I do right now LOL. As for my son forgetting to bring his ribs, we've all decided that he will be the winner next year because he will be the only one doing ribs! (punishment for forgetting)

Computer virus help
SilvrT replied to slick97spirit's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
You could try restoring your computer to an earlier date using System Restore. Select a date sometime before the virus first appeared. -
I lived in Northern BC (west of Prince George) for a while a few years back. MAJOR moose country! My job was IT support for 2 sawmills that were appx 200 km apart and I had to drive to each one every day .... had many close calls with moose and deer. Never saw any bear near the highway up there tho but there were lots of them in the bush coz nobody went into the bush without bear spray, a good whistle, and a rifle close at hand.

03 Midnight RSV steers hard
SilvrT replied to arnesbay's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This could have a big effect on it. My dealer said to put 2Lbs more than spec in both front and rear...so I did...and it made quite a difference. -
Lilbeaver... thanks for the comments. I was, at one time, a bodyman/painter and had my own shop (like about 27 years ago) so I had a good knowledge of what I was doing. Unfortunately, I just didn't have the right place/equipment at the time when I painted my '87, thus, the use of the spray cans. I did use a good quality 2K clear "spray can" supplied by the same paint supplier initially but I wasn't 100% happy with the end result so I went out and bought a compressor and a gun and pretty much re-did the whole thing again LOL. Still tho, I was working under much less than ideal shop conditions. Speaking of MurrayD... I haven't heard much of him since that ride. I should drop him a line.

There is no absolute cure for the chirp/whine. The " I " basket swap is not a guarantee. The reason some don't whine and others do is that the clutch basket gears match correctly with the primary gear but that is just a stroke of LUCK and that's about all you have to go on by swapping the clutch basket...IMHO. The mechanic who changed mine said that back in the mid 90's when this problem first developed, they would have to take dial gauge readings of the lash of the gears and submit that to Yamaha and they would send out a basket that would provide the correct gear lash. Nowadays they don't have the time or can't be bothered (probably because there are so many of them) so they just send out an "I" basket and if it works, you're one of the LUCKY ones. BTW, changing mine made no difference. I'm beginning to think that this so-called "I" basket is nothing more than a smoke screen to make a person think they're actually getting something "different".

hey Rick (lilbeaver) ... did you happen to take a good look at my '87 when you were up here (the Black one) and we all did that ride to Manning Park? (MurrayD was riding it and owned it at that time). I repainted that with "rattle can" paint; however, the paint was mixed and "bottled" at an auto paint supply shop. It was actual automotive base coat, not 2K. The clear was professional grade clear applied with compressor and gun.

Danged lucky guy. Yep, those bears just come flyin out of nowhere ... had that happen to me once. Thankfully, it was ahead of me and travelling at an angle away from me but I still had to hit the brakes real hard to avoid it. Danged thing just looked at me and kept on running ... by then I was mad as h3LL so I chased it with horn blaring and me screamin. LOL

Question for anyone who thinks they are an "expert" motorcyclist.
SilvrT replied to GG54172's topic in Safety and Education
I'd hate to see what would happen, using the front only going into a corner, if you hit a slick spot. I use the front brake ONLY as a "trail" brake for the rear and to provide the extra stopping power when I need to slow down real fast, or when coming to a complete stop but I would NEVER use my front brake in a corner. Maybe I'm reading you wrong tho... "going into a corner" ??? Do you mean "approaching" the corner BEFORE you set up for the turn? ... if so, then yes, front would be used by me too but not without the back also. I find the front dives too much if I only use the front brake.- 18 replies

SilvrT replied to GG54172's topic in Safety and Education
Your comment about "relative upright posture" made me think a bit (yes, sometimes I do that LOL) .... when I'm taking a corner, I do tend to keep my head relatively upright, meaning I keep my head and thus my eyes as perpendicular to the road as possible ... not sure why I do this other than to keep the "scene" in normal balance so to speak.- 18 replies

Question for anyone who thinks they are an "expert" motorcyclist.
SilvrT replied to GG54172's topic in Safety and Education
Speaking of brakes, I use both except in a corner..then only the rear. Speaking of leaning, I rarely lean my body to maneouver a corner, I always counter steer. About the only time I lean is when it's a real tight corner and I'm taking it quite fast...then I lean to reduce the lean angle of the bike. Dunno if this is right or wrong...it's just how I do it.- 18 replies
