  1. ...but what sort of example is he setting? No helmet, leathers, or gloves! I think this was a photo op.
  2. I did what you are considering doing. I considered the Wing, saw the Venture, liked the price, and went for the Venture for passenger comfort. I loved my ST, especially in the twisties. However, the Venture is a more comfortable ride and still gets through the corners nicely. I may be less likely to kill myself on the Venture, and I can certainly ride it for longer stretches. I have no regrets about the move!
  3. One news item indicates that one fool drove his car into Vancouver with the intention of torching it!
  4. As a Vancouverite, I am proud of the season the Canucks had, while being naturally disappointed by the final result. Thomas was awesome! The events following the game were disgusting. It seems certain that the perpetrators of the rioting were not Canucks fans, but rather idiots who came with an agenda prepared to cause havoc, regardless of the result of the game. Police should have no trouble finding the individuals, as there must be thousands of pictures taken by people in the crowd as well as TV and surveillance cameras. Once again, the actions of a few will taint the impression the world will have of this amazing place I call home. Congratulations, Boston!
  5. Well that sucks! Why did they change it? A week ago, the forecast was for SUN!!! So much for forecasting. I rely on my "Weather Rock", which is 100% accurate, but only for the present. If the rock is wet, it's raining. If the rock is swinging, the wind is blowing. If the rock casts a shadow, the sun is shining. If the rock does not cast a shadow and is not wet, the sky is cloudy. If the rock is white, it is snowing. If the rock is coated with ice, there is a frost. If the ice is thick, it's a heavy frost. If the rock is bouncing, there is an earthquake. If the rock is under water, there is a flood. If the rock is warm, it is sunny. If the rock is missing, there was a tornado.
  6. I was somewhat surprised that my rear pads had to be replaced after only 14,000 Km (8,700 miles). I guess I am spending way too much time in traffic!
  7. There are some lousy hunters in North America!
  8. With all the posts you made today, Rick, I cannot see how ANY work got done. Meanwhile, I have been slaving away on my contract, but it is certainly nice to have an income, even if only for a few weeks. Of course, they may be so impressed with me, that more work will come!

    Hockey

Hoping that the trend continues, and both teams keep winning at home. Go, Canucks, Go!
  10. I have found on those really hot days, that soaking the head and T-shirt (long-sleeved preferrably) and then donning the helmet and vented leather jacket keeps me cooler than just riding in a shirt. The water takes longer to evaporate under the jacket, and you have the protection. I confess, I remove the leather chaps on hot summer days, and just wear jeans. However, I guess the same principle would work if you soaked the jeans and then put the chaps on. I do know people with the water vests that are designed for the job, but those REALLY hot days are not that common in this part of the world.
  11. If you wave at motorcycles, do you wave at scooters? Do you draw the line at 150 cc? I will wave at any motorized two-wheeler.
  12. Not just you. Me too! I don't like riding with riders I don't know, and certainly not if they have been drinking!
  13. From Horseshoe Bay to Squamish is about 30 - 40 minutes, and another 30 - 40 to Whistler. The road surface is excellent, and most of the highway is four lane, which means you are not stuck forever behind a Camry doing the speed limit. The curves are still there... as are the spectacular views of sea, mountains and waterfalls.
  14. I would not rely on clutch whine, air horns, deer qhistles or anything short of an accurate shot from a firearm to keep deer out of the way!
  15. Just returned from a great ride up to Whistler. The Sea to Sky Highway is a great road to scrub in the new Avon tires... all round, not just in the middle. There was a British Sports Car rally in Olympic Plaza. Lots of MGs, Triumphs, Jags, a few Lotus, Aston Martins, Bentlys, and Minis. Oh, and a Rover 2000 TC. In the dim distant past, I owned a few of the models, and drove a few more. Good day, and only rode through two light showers.
  16. Planning to ride over to Nanaimo next week-end. Thanks for the warning!
  17. Thanks, MiCarl, I have heard similar horror stories every time I have had my tires changed. Good point on the handling change because of the profile change. I had not thought of that!
  18. After much deliberation, I had Avon Venom tires mounted on my RSV '08. The stock tires lasted a year (15,000 km). The point of my post is the warnings from the dealer: "Ride carefully for 100 - 400 km, as the tires are slippy. Be specially careful if it's wet." And I was asked to sign a waiver which confirmed I had heard their warning. I understand that tires have a compund sprayed on them to preserve them while sitting on a shelf. Surely there is something you could rinse the tires once they are being mounted to minimise that new slipperiness? It's showering this week-end in Vancouver, BC... kinda like April weather! So it may be a while before I can properly test the tires to see if Avons on a Venture are as good as they were on my previous two bikes.
  19. Group riding can be fun, but the group should be 4 to 6 bikes MAX. So, if there are 18 bikes, that's three groups. To my mind, those huge groups are a danger to all riders in the group, and a bloody nuisance to other road users. Preferably, ride only with people you know. It's much more fun when all in the group share a similar need for speed or what's that other thing... oh going sedately! My Club has a few Poker Runs, and sometimes attends others. I think on all of them, we ride individually or in small groups, rather than one big train. Coast Riders also have "Scavenger Hunts" from time to time. On these, we have changed the format that clues are found at selected locations on the route while the bikes are parked. There have been a few close calls while riders look for clues while riding. Even on quiet roads, it is easy to forget the mirror when you suddenly spot a clue and jam on the brakes. All the focus need to be on the road and traffic. You cannot do that while searching for some cryptic clue on a house or in a field. I have decided for myself that I will ride alone rather than in a group which includes someone who drinks (even one beer). My Club had a discussion a while ago... which I brought to this arena. In both places, the fur flew! So, I will make my choice on drinking and riding, and stay away from a lubricated rider. At then end of the day... let's hoist a few! Cheers!
  20. I used the sheepskin on my ST1100 (www.alaskaleather.com ), and it worked very well. However, I do not find I need it on the Venture. That pillowy cushion works fine, even for my fleshless back-side supporting my fleshy belly!
  21. I have ridden with SilvrT. If he's anything to go by, these Venture Riders could get a guy into a lot of trouble... and expense! All that safety chrome!!!!!
  22. Part number: RAM-B-346U. http://www.ram-mount.com/products/motorcycles.htm Note that the bracket they provide to hold the GPS does not include the electrical connection. I swapped the connection between the car mount and the RAM mount... until I broke off the connection. Now I use a USB connection to the accessory socket on both the bike and the car. It works almost the same, except on my GPS, I have to manually turn it on, but it keeps the battery charged! One caution, make sure you use the longest screws possible, or they can shake out. Mine also came with spacers between the top reservoir cover and the RAM Mount. I removed them without issue. I used the mount on my ST1100, and it was a simple swap to the Venture.
  23. Oh... yes, I would be happy to play tour guide as long as iy is not the week-end of June 25-26, as I will be out of town.
  24. There are a couple of places to rent bikes that I am aware of: http://www.cyclebc.ca/ http://www.trevdeeley.com/ (This is a Harley Dealer). As for where to ride? If you have not been to this area before, the first MUST ride is the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler (as already suggested). If you want a longer ride, the Duffy Lake Loop includes the Sea to Sky and a great ride through the mountains. Allow 10 hours (+ or -) for this one. It is a favourte "Destination Highways" ride. Contact me directly if you have any more questions about riding in this area.
