  1. My wife noticed some writing on the back of the backrest yesterday as we headed out for a Sunday ride. Anybody else have this on their backrest? "WARNING This backrest is for solo riding only!" So, whats up with that? Is this just a CYA or should I be taking it off everytime she gets on? Iowa Guy
  2. Thanks very much. I ordered the parts and we will be a happy couple. Iowa Guy
  3. I've got a nolan N41 classic plus helmet that needs a new face shield, hinge screw bolt and plastic slide cover over one of the hinges. Where is the best place to get parts for the nolan? I don't know that I am really fond of the helmet but its the one that has the headset I wear to talk with my wife when she goes along so I gotta keep it up in good repair. Iowa Guy
  4. Thanks, It is running. Darn kill switch got me again. Thought that I had checked it. Oh well. Got several things done on the honey dew list when I should have been riding. Iowa Guy
  5. As my dad says, "Anything is easy if you know what you are doing" Well I don't and the bike won't start. Here is the symptoms. The battery is okay. The lights and dash look good when the key is turned on. Lights and dash go off as they should when I hit the starter button but nothing else happens. Bike does not turn over or even try. I've got several guesses but I've already shown my ignorance. What should I look for? Iowa Guy
  6. Wow! 4 weeks midseason. I hope all goes well and you can make up for lost time with some great trips. Iowa Guy
  7. Wow! Somebody got a great e-bay deal! Item number: 170241895667 I love those 1st gens Iowa Guy
  8. Dan/Chuck Thanks a bunch. A buddy and I have a running debate as to whether monkey butt or beads work best on a long ride. I will let him ride my bike with the beads once installed but I'm just not ready to shake powder down my shorts yet. Iowa Guy :scorched:
  9. So...I got an 89 and just bought a set of beadrider seats and am anxious to install them. Except how do I remove the seat so that I can cinch up the stretchy cords on the seats? Sweaty in Iowa Iowa Guy:confused24:
  10. My Stebel has saved me also. This past sunday, I was following a buddy with his FJR. We were in town, 4 lane road on the inside lane. I saw as a van on the outside lane attempted to change with no signal and nearly run my friend into oncoming traffic. He hit his stock horn. The van driver did reacted but late and moved back into the right lane. He seemed content to stay there then but I still didn't trust him as I moved to pass him as my buddy did. Again he didn't see me as he started to move over but he sure did hear me. He was startled into laying on his horn. Stebel vs a stock minivan horn: no contest! Last I saw of him he was staying in the right lane.
  11. Wonder if Mike Rowe will volunteer for that Dirty Job.
  12. I just caught this thread today way too late. My pipes need replacement so if a new group buy is arranged in the fall please get me on the waiting list for then. Wow do they look and sound great. Iowa Guy
  13. So.. I have heard a lot of talk about the Dragon's Tail as a road that is fun for the twisties but I've never been on it. I was on two roads last week that certainly had some twisties and I am curious if anyone has ridden them as well as the Dragon's Tail and so could give some comparisons. I went to the Black Hills and first rode the Needle's Hwy down to Custer St Prk then road the Iron Mt Rd back up to Mt Rushmore. Iron Mt. Road had 15, 10 and 5 mph marked corners. It had an immediate 270 degree turn after exiting from a tunnel. It had the narrow winding slightly elevated blacktop split with each opposing lane having its own road then return together after a quarter mile. How does the Dragons Tail compare? Iowa Guy
  14. I bought my 89 with 19500 miles on it 3 years ago for $5000 and it has 37000 miles on it now. Just got back from a trip to Black Hills with no trouble at all. You can get parts. OMG buy it. Iowa Guy
  15. So, I have painted 3 coats of black over the factory red paint, lightly sanding between coats and am now ready to spray a clear coat on. Do I lightly sand again between the clear coat layers? Iowa Guy (first time painter)
  16. Hi Scotty, I just bought a Magellan Maestro 3250 GPS and am looking at ways to mount it on my 89. I see that you mounted a GPS on your 1st gen but I couldn't tell from the pictures on your web site how it was done. What did you attach it to? Do you have anymore instructions or pics? Has anyone else mounted this model or similiar on their 1st gen and if so, where? Iowa Guy
  17. I have a prescription change coming up and will probably get new lenses and frames. What particular motorcycle factors in choosing eye glasses have others found important? I am thinking of such things as tinting, shape of the frames, or the temple pieces. Iowa Guy
  18. My son's moped does not seem to be using any oil. It is a 2003 Derby that has a seperate oil tank and then is supposed to mix the oil and gas automatically but the oil never needs to be filled. Sounds to me like this could be a problem eventually. What should I check first with this? Iowa Guy
  19. Let me complicate it more. The mechanic said that the bike did not show the problem when I brought it in because the steering head bearings were dry so would not allow the shaking to occur. When he greased them it freed them up to shake. Regarding braking on a turn: I learned the hard way about only sparingly using the frount brake. Now, I only gently use the hand brake as an extra if the foot integrated brake is not enough. Yes, that would mean that pushing the pedal, the front brake would be applied but only in coordination with the rear brake also. comments invited Iowa Guy
  20. So, to wrap things up with a question: I went ahead and put a new avon on the front of the bike and the handling problem disappeared with no tightening of the steering head nut. Has this happened to anyone else who has had Avons and how can it be avoided? Iowa Guy
  21. I like the Frogg Toggs too except that the zippers on the pant legs will not stay zipped and ther is no snap to hold them down. Anybody else notice this? Iowa Guy
  22. I've done some research into the service manual and posts here. I will return to dealer today and recommend that he check for loose steering head. Thanks for the advice. Iowa Guy
  23. How do I pull up posts by specific people. Can't seem to figure this out since I was a week ago. Iowa Guy:confused24:
  24. Got my 89 back from the mechanic after what I thought was going to be some general repair and inspection. I had the rear shock replaced, the right front brake replace and greased the steering bearings. Paid my bill and rode it away but approaching the first stop sign at about 35 mph, I let up on the throttle and the handlebars went into a significant shimmy, shake, oscillation. On the highway, it settled down at about 50mph but reappeared at the same speed when I braked with the engine. I immediately returned to the mechanic. He said that he knew it was a problem but didn't know what to do. He wondered if it was the Avon Tires. He pointed out that on the front tire, there was a cup in the rubber on alternate sides of the tire just below the diagonal slash. In other words, facing the front of the bike looking at the diagonal slash on the bottom side of the highest part of the slash there is a cup. (Should of sent a picture). He wondered if the shimmy was due to the cupping. Seems to me that the speed would be too slow to have the tire issue effect the handle bars A couple years ago, I fixed an oscillation by removing the ignition cover over the steering head and rapping the big nut with a screwdriver and hammer. I've got an new Avon front tire in my garage and could put it on but would rather not since the one on the bike is not worn out yet. So, whadda ya think? Is it the Avon or is the steering too loose? Anybody else have this problem? Iowa Guy I wanna ride my bike
