  1. THANKS FOR THE QUESTION. iT TAKES ME BACK TO SOME GOOD TIMES. In the late 70s early 80s each year I would take a 6 week motorcycle vacation and travel all over the US. Back then a thousand dollars was a lot of money and would take me almost the whole year to save it. But that amount was what I would take on my trips, with a back up credit card (that I never had to use). Bike would be preped and ready. In those years it was enough money to travel to every lower 48 and parts of Canada and Mexico. Camped every night usually in a national forest, would shower at KOA's or streams once in awhile. Those trips would be 6 to 10,000 miles each. had plenty of time and money and saw so much it's had to remember it all. Met so many great people, I long for the day I fully retire to do it all over again, this time with my wife. But with the $1000.00 and a week I would head to the Northwest and tour the coast line of Oregon and Washington returning home via Yellowstone and the Colorado Rockies. Thanks for the memories, we all have them.
  2. 30 years ago I used to work with a David Salas and the person you were talking to looks like it could be a son. The David Salas I know owns an HD dresser and rides with a group called Los Carnales La Famila. Usually see David at the cancer runs or toy runs. I will ask him if he has a son / same name. Might be.
  3. Gotta agree with cowpuc. Live 20 miles East of Albuquerque and make a Laguna stop every couple weeks in the winter when we ride, and a weekly stop during the summer during evening rides. The Laguna Burger is the best for $6.99 you get the 1/2 pounder with everything cheese and the best green chile, fries and a 20oz. drink. Matter of fact all there food is great and you wouldn't know it being in a Kicks Quick Stop. Have been going there for years, the dining area used to have 4 tables, last year they expanded to 14 tables and added a patio area that seats 20+.
  4. You really shouldn't have to much trouble as long as your bike is ready. Have traveled to Bolixi MS 3 times from Albuquerque NM approx.1400 mi. in 30 hours and never really pushed it. Stops were for gas and to streach. Road most of the time between 75 and 80 mph. probably averaged 50 to 60 mph. Also riden many times between Memphis Tn and Albuquerque NM in approx. 15 hrs. Never was trying to break a record or set any goals, just riding. So I sure if you and your bike are up to it as you appear ride safe and you'll accomplish your goals. Have fun.
  5. AI think there was a TV show named after this. The family name was the Clampits. I can see this person is definitly lovin life.
  6. looks like a police woman off duty on her way home picking up some last minute items. looks like she is wearing a duty type watch and has either a clip case or badge case on the left side of her belt, and the hair cut. just my guess. but she probably does shop at walmat a lot.
  7. There is a module in that distributor small black or gray with flat pins. It plugs into a harness under the cap. They go bad and you are describing the symptom exactly. Pretty easy fix if that is the culprit. Module usually cost $30 to $50. Could probably YouTube and there will be a video by someone fixing this issue. This is called the distributor module been awhile since having a Chevy. But these module go bad at anytime and a good idea to have a spare. They usually go out after the vehicle is shut off from being hot. Sometimes after they cool the vehicle will start and run but not for long. Just a thought and something I had happen to me more than once with Chevy 350s and 454s.
  8. Cowpuc, I like following your post. You ride like I like to. Been touring for years, slowed while the kids were growing up, but now looking at retirement in a year or so and will have more time than ever. But I have been a Yamaha believer for a long time. Seams Yamaha will test a bike or 4 wheeler for years before putting it on the market. Hope that is what they are doing insteaed of eliminating the RSV. Yamaha has always been the most tight lipped when designing/testing models, so I never believe the rumors until I can see it. Only have 97,000 on my '08, plan is to keep it to the 2 or 300,000 mile mark. Will never say never to the Gold Wing also bullet proof, as I have a '81 GL 1000 Interstate with 177,000. When it's time will consider or brends as there has been a lot of improvement in the past 15-20 years. So, keep on riding and stay safe, love read about your adventures.
  9. Future reference, maybe. Sorry don't have time to read all the responces. Before you do much more work I would purge the radiator and cooling system of all the air. These new cooling systems are a closed system and if there are air pockets in the block or radiator it will cause what you are describing. I had almost the same issue with my ford f150 and a mechanic told me to get the vehicle nose on a steep incline and run it with the radiator cap off several minutes making sure the thermostate opened to let any air escape through the block into the radiator and out, adding fluid if it or as it needed. Some vehicle have a purge valve for this issue to clear the air pockets. Also keep an eye on the temp gauge to made sure you don't over heat the motor. That was 6 yrs ago and it's still running great with 178,000 miles.
  10. I like Bert2006, don't worry about it. I also am holding out for Yamaha, but if Yamaha can't fill my need pretty soon I'll be looking else where. Like you have stated, there is good and bad to all bikes. To me it comes down to my type of riding and what fits me. I'll be open to anything Kaw. Suzk. Honda. Indian. HD when the time comes. If Yamaha doesn't get back into the Touring market it's not going to run me out of here because I may chose to ride something different, there is way to much helpful general information here. And my skin has gotten pretty think from my riding buddies as I'm the only one riding a RSV.
  11. Just picked up my pass last week. Having watched my riding buddies save big, for several years. When riding with them a few National Parks would also let me in free or honored the discounts as we were together. Other times I paid big. None of New Mexico's state faculities or parks will honor the National Park pass. At 65 the state has a senior pass if a resident. Don't really like getting old to get discounts when I've been paying taxes for 45 years to support the great Parks. But I do feel better I've made it to the point I can. Now, I'm on to search the internet and see what other senior discounts the government has that I've finally earned and can use.
  12. Check the inner front fairing. Inside are a couple multi plugs that could have worked loose or been disconnected when the amp was installed. The CB quite on me a month after getting my 08 RSV and it was the connections that had worked loose. Guess is they weren't full seated when plugged together at the factory. I also wrapped the connection with electrical tape and glad to say "knock on wood" no problems in the past 5 yrs.
  13. Out West, it gets pretty warm-hot in the summer. Like the idea, but without AC you would be riding around in an oven. Interesting enough to follow their progress for sure.
  14. Any Thoughts? Yep, thought I should buy one before I need another one. So I did. Thanks for the post. Saves a lot of money and I like having a spare. John
  15. Prayers for you, your family, and those your father touched. May the memories of your father ease your pain.
  16. I must agree with all. But FREEDOM is the biggest part I feel. Puts me back to my first cross country trip at a young age, when there were not worries or responcibilities. Can't beat the scenery on any ride. Love the back roads, but still enjoy the rides through big cities on ocassion. What is most appealing is how many people you meet, all walks of life that want to talk about a lonely soul on the open road. They all wish, they shoulda, coulda, woulda before the time passed. I'm about to retire and the bucket list is calling me to do a continious ride through the US and Canada, to stay on the road for as close to a year as feasible.
  17. Waiting !!! Only have 100,000 0n my '08 so I have a couple hundred thousand miles I can wait.
  18. I'm an electronic illiterate, but have wondered about a touch pad ignition for start and shut down. Could even arm an alarm system. ? Have been out a couple times on long trips when someone lost their key and the spare was in the trunk. (something like the keyless entry pads on newer vehicles)
  19. Midlands latest model camera is only $199. A friend of mine has it. The camera is small and he says it is very easy to operate. Has wifi to a smart phone for viewing, editing and other operations. Have only seen it once but it takes very good video or photos. Don't know any more than that, but will consider the Midland when I dicide to make a purchase.
  20. just a suggestion, might something to consider. I had a storage shed that had a plywood floor I used to park a goldwing, yamaha rsv, and a 1500# john deere tractor in. Before I used it, over the plywood I screwed down floor decking used in a lot of floors of 2 story apartments or homes floors. It is a very dense material 1" thick. A 4x8 sheet weighs almost 100#. Never had any issues of sagging because the floor decking has tongue and groove edges. After a while, I found a couple used truck bed liners that I cut the sides off put over the floor to park on and keep grease or other liquids from soaking into the floor. The liners were easy to take out, wash clean and degrease. Wish I had pictures, but I still use the old truck bed liners over the concrete in my garage to park my bikes on. I built the shed with a couple of old construction buddies about 10 yrs ago. It was 22 feet wide and 12 feet deep with a 16 foot wide roll up garage door. It was almost as big as a 2 car garage. I sold it to a guy that moves houses and storage containers. Jacked the shed up, supported the sides with 6x6 short timbers the backed a trailer under and set it down, strapped it and drove it away. Now I have more toys and wish I still had it.
  21. I purchased a set of the gerbling heated gloves from cabela's a year ago. they are battery powered stored in a pouch. purchased extra batteries and both 110v and 12v charge cords. have worked great for me and I can wear them to any outdoor event. I also purchased the 12v battery powered fleece jacket that works really well for me. wear the gloves and jacket to football games and other events outside. Cabela's also sells a battery powered vest. it's the portability i wanted to keep warm and not have to be plugged in with a wire. there are 4 settings, low the battery last close to 6 hours and on high close to 2 hours. I like the gloves because the seem to heat the back of my hand and fingers, where needed riding in the wind. The jacket i usually wear under my leather jacket as a liner on low when it's real cold. with the extra batteries i charge them on the bike while riding down the road when needed. First order came in and the gloves were too small for me and too big for the wife, I hand no issues exchanging them through Cabela's. Or returning them if they didn't meet my expectations. they are rather expensive, but it was the mobility I wanted when wearing heated gear. Good Luck.......
  22. It is a great idea and you reasons a great. I just wish I lived closer to VR riders. However this will give me a place to post the camping trips I am planning and if anyone reads the post and are in the area, they will be more than welcome to join in. Much of my camping is within 25 miles of a motel, because a couple of my friends will make the trip but don't camp so that option is open to anyone in the area that doesn't camp. Shamue.
  23. GREAT IDEA.... I'm in an area with maybe 2 or 3 venture riders, but do a lot of mc camping, at least once a moth and usually twice in the warm months. It would be nice to have a sub-heading for venture member camping dates, experiences, and general how to's for better more efficient ideas. Don't want to add more work for this site, but, I do think this is the best site for information and friendship. I plan on retiring in a year or 2 and will be mc traveling/camping almost full time and hope to get the opportunity to meet many of the members here, that have helped with my venture. Have used another nice helpful site for mc camping: http://www.motocamper.com
  24. Like stated, you start out riding Yamaha as a kid and stick to the brand. And in my years with Yamaha I have learned a couple things for sure. Yamaha doesn't talk about what their doing and it seems forever for them to make changes. But when they finally do, the product has been tested and tested ready for the public to go out and TRY to destroy, which they can't. So I hope this bit of news is true, cause I ready for the next generation. Thanks.
  25. I would double check with the Park Rangers at the Cliff Dwelling visitor center before you head out. In the last 10 or so days they had flooding in the area and the news showed several of the roads washed out. I mean washed completely down the mountain. A couple of the small communities had to be evacuated by helicopter. Didn't look like the damaged could be repaired in just a few days. Hope you enjoy your ride, you'll be riding a better twisty than the Pigs Tail.
