had to have myself a tablet PC (Dell) so I got one on a lease with a dollar buy out. Now why did I have to do that??? The video driver which controls screen orientation craps out! So the tablet function is all but a moot point. I use a second monitor in the office, there have been many instances where when I wake it up my screen is in large type. I may be going blind, but I don't need the computer to decide I need large type. Firefox: It won't open! Icon is there, it just quit working. I've already re-installed it a number of times, seems to have problems each time. The not working part is just the latest. At times when I click on a button in one program, it switches applications instead. Loading programs is (from my perspective) r-e-a-l s--l--o--w ! External monitor will suddnly get fuzzy (little red lines running through it), won't go away till I re-start. I'd send the damn thing back, but, Oh no! you can't do that! So I 'm screwed. :soapbox:O.K. I'm done b**ching now!

Well, actually a WOLO bad boy. had to do this the easy way of course:bang head: , I mounted the horn on the top bolt for the airdam, which entailed removing the spacer and replacing it with two nuts to do the final clamping of the horn to the airdam and the engine guard to the support bracket. It didn't help that I first wanted to stick the bolt through from the other side so that I could just tighten it up, the frame pervents that, but I had already drilled out the threads so I needed to add a nut on the inside as well. Now if I just don't have to remove the airdam too often. I do like the location! next will be a new fuse panel (I think).

Been there, done that! Tried the needle nose pliers bit, no dice, the baffle was to stiff to pull out, considered re-welding till it jammed somewhere where it didn't rattle, hasn't been a problem since. wouldn't worry about it if you do mostly long distance with little stop and go since that is the only time you hear it. do think she's a tad more throaty with the collector baffle out/loose. Nothing serious

A year later I should hope so as well

Those are the cheap knock offs for MBT's. You will have to re-educate hyourself on walking with MBT's, though I suspect most women will have less trouble with that then men due to their shorter stride. As far as standing on concrete probably not the answer. Brenda was looking for workout shoes some time ago and happened into a shoe store where they actually knew what they were talking about (there was a Podiatrist in the store who confirmed the sales persons statements). find someone who knows what the h$ll they're talking about, be worth the money!!

that cupholder, if mounted on the passenger grab bars or elsewhere in the wind, WILL manage to detach itself :think:Now how does it do that???

Here's a pic of what's on there right now, no markings, stickers or engraved I.D. End to end it is 14-3/8th inch, hole to hole 13 inch. The shock is positioned at around 30 degrees from horizontal. Sidecar and passenger weight is probably no more then 350, so whatever will handle that.

Earl, am borrowing what my wife claims is her 'puter, so i don't have my files on here. There's two pictures in my Equalean project album which show a the suspension set up. Don't know if I can copy and paste here, I'll try. basically they look like the "Progressive suspension" 412 series coil over. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/album.php?albumid=423&pictureid=2706

Been there , done that Once blew the main fuse to the house, electrician asked my mother if I was still alive (220V)

I'm needing to replace the shocks on my sidecar, simple coilover is fine, current length is about 11 - 11.5 inch and I have evidence that what is on there, whatever that is, is not quite adequate. Can someone give me information on how to determine what I need?

I'm assuming you're asking that about the side car. I've actually modified the mounts, the lower mounts (front) and rear mounts are connected with a unified frame in the shape of an "H" (more or less) The front upper mounts are connected with a push/pull rod. All connections are with Heim joints so it is a relatively simple matter to unscrew/screw in the joint for adjustments. See attached pics. The vertical brace between upper and lower control arms prevented leaning when I brought it home, also made it ride like a pig and made me wonder why anyone would want a rigid sidecar! Hmm, doesn't seem to want to upload, look in my pic folder, there is a picture there that kind of shows what I'm talking about. Sorry.

I think I found the culprit, after checking to make sure the floor was level i checked the bike was level and the wheel vertical. Front wheel is OK but the rear wheel is of. I've got a 14 inch square and it says the thing is of vertical by about a 1/4 inch. Perpetual right turn in the rear. As far as the sidecar, I discovered that the alleged lean out was actually a lean in, so it was pushing the front to the left. I've adjusted the lean in to a lean out and the whole thing is running better, feels better. Just a little more adjustment (I think) :happy65: Life is good!! Thanks for the input and Merry Christmas! :sun:

brought the pooch home, vet seems to think he's got a short ciquit of sorts in the cerebelum. Didn't think it was worth spending hundreds to confirm his assesment (I agree), so, this being a deteriorating condition, we have a handicapped dog with extra needs for the time being. We'll have to see how much time. Wonder if I can get a handicap sticker for him Thanks for the kind words!

You got a bunch of pets, you got a bunch of problems. Just in the last couple of months we had to put on of our cats down due to cancer, one of the dogs was infested with whip worms and needed serious attention; and I just dropped another dog of who can't keep his feet under him, and is losing control of his bladder and bowels. No direct diagnosis, 'cause the vet had to go into surgery, but he's throwing terms around that don't sound good: stroke, tumor, cancer, cat scan, MRI, chemo ..... Methinks wife's not going to be happy with the outcome on this one (either). Lousy timing, right before Christmas!

laid a section of angle iron under the front and rear wheel (pyramid style) and centered it then laid another parallel to the tire: the rear tire appears to be straight. Came by the bike shop and they happened to be open (Christmas hours I guess), the man says steering head is tight, though he also said that it may need to be tighter due to the sidecar. Or a tire. then wants to know if I can leave it; .........uhhhh,.... NO! Says it takes an hour to tighten the steering head! Also says he needs the bike a half day to put a new tire on ($125 if I buy from him, $39 if I bring the tire and wheel)

Was looking to see if i could do that but there is a lock type washer (supposedly) and I can't get the brace of with the tools I have. I'll see if maybe I am "lucky" and the tabbed lock washer is gone prior to finding the tech article. Thanks for the input! Front brakes were totally rebuild last summer (so they said) though the disks are original and are by no means smooth smooth. When I lift the front wheel of and spin it there is a slight rubbing from either a warped disk or wheel. Haven't decided what side yet. another thing on the list to check. I started checking into the caliper upgrade, but Earl tells me I'd have to change forks (and disks, and ...???) as well. Still not convinced I need to de-link either

Anyone have experience with "buckeye's" Carbone brake pads for a '83 especially compared to the EBC HH pads. Price difference is about $10/set in very round numbers. Buckeye says theirs are sintered pads as well. My current pads (back) are 3/4 gone and the left front is just starting to squeek after 8K miles I am almost sure those were OEM. Thanks!

Had a new tire put on the rear last summer and will be ordering a new front in the next week or so (this one's cupping and about worn out anyway). I'll be looking into the dyno beads for that in case balance is an issue. Don't have the right size tools to pull the steering head and tighten the bearings there, so a trip to the shop will be in order, with this being Christmas week and him having bankers hours this winter, catching him may prove elusive:o , will check fork oil while I'm at it. I'll also be upgrading to the super brace (anyone have a used one?) Here's a thought (this is a veiled attempt at a bribe - sort off), anyone close by wants to help with some of that:confused07: You might be the first and only one from VR.org who will have seen the sidecar in person:whistling: The sidecar alignment is a different story, most likely I'll be starting from scratch on that one:doh: some things they did you would think they should've known better. I'll be checking frame alignment, wheel alignment, wheel spacers (I know they're too long and pinching the bearing) and lean out. Merry Christmas everyone!!

Y'all still speak English there??:whistling::rotfl: -
Hey Randy, yes, she would turn left prior to the sidecar, bad enough you wouldn't want to do it on the left side of the left lane while n ot paying attention, but not enough to be noticeable while riding hands on. Thanks for the input Bob, you do realize that I have a leaner sidecar? The bike is still a bike and though i can adjust the lean of the sidecar, I don't think that would affect the left turning tendency of the bike. I'll find out for sure though. Thanks.

trouble with voltage
barend replied to jonsmyth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
FWIW, my 55W fog lights would cause the voltage to drop way down as well at idle. It would come back up slowly, the quick fix was to turn the fogs of, watch the voltage come up to normal and turn them back on! (couple of seconds) Have a great (and safe) trip!! -
:think:you mean like a ventriloquist??? But seriously:innocent: you talking about one of those wireless earpieces, you gonna have one heck of a time trying to get the helmet on without hurting yourself or trying to get the darn thing in yourt ear after you put the helmet on. If you're using the small earbuds like aharbi shows in his pic you will have an inline mic, cool idea, too bad I can't hear my phone ring if i have that type earpiece in. My wife hates a bluetooth device for me!!

double whammy here! First, my '83 is not tracking straight when I let go of the handlebars. I recall from my commuting days that I used to sit on the back seat of the Virago with the thumb lock on and my hands in my pockets and ride for miles going down I20. My VR ('83) won't do that, she falls away to the left. What would cause this? Warped frame, tire out of balance, left side of my rear too big??? And after that of course, how do you fix it and is it worth the effort? Second and the main reason I bring this up, now that I have a sidecar attached, I am trying to attain neutral steering by adjusting the toe in. In theory I should be able to adjust sidecar toe-in to achieve the rig to be steering neutral, but that might come at the price of increased tire wear. Any suggestions or opinions? Thanks!
