  1. How funny, Herb! I ordered 2 light kits from ebay for 50 just last week! 4 strips and 6 pods. After my light install tonight, I'll wait for those to get here and put those in. I will make sure and post pics when I do them. I'm planning on the strips under the back bags and center of bike (haven't figured out where yet on the middle of the bike thats not too hot with exhaust pipes). Also under the trunk, front forks, front wheel, winshield. That should about do it. I WOULD like info, if any one has it, on buying individual LED lights and wiring them up (what to buy and instructions)... I can hook up pos and neg, but I have read you can't just shoot 12v into an LED. It needs a resistor or something.. That would be super helpful. (Saw a pic of a new goldwing with blue and red led lights and it was AMAZING).
  2. OK, I JUST got my squidly brackets today in the mail (Thanks!) also waiting are a quad set of lights from walmart, 2 flood and 2 beam, for about 20 each. Also got me a new pair of horns from ebay. All going on the squidley bracket tonight (late). I will post pictures tonight just for lookin'. Personally, I'm always a function over form person... Or I guess I believe function IS form.. either way. Especially when it comes to lights and seeing at night. I have had one to many 'butt clinchers' on a motorcycle at night. Even wired my previously traded Hawk to run high and low beams at the same time for night driving as well as power directly from the battery for brighter lights. Appearance takes a back seat (for me). If I can get a set of lights for 20 or 120 bucks and they both light up the road the same and (if they are mounted right) both last as long, then I'll pick the $20 regardless of how they look. BUT THATS JUST ME (and I have a 1st gen, so no parts designed for the bike ) Think those bullet lights look real good by the way. I bet they are super bright for their size! Anyway, will drop some pics of completed work tonight. I will have another thread coming soon with all the other stuff I have done with my new 88 venture and these lights will be on it.
  3. I have a nolan modular / flip-face helmet that I love. Just this last week I purchased an edset for it. I should get it Monday or Tuesday and I'll install it. I'll post on the install and results. Up until now I have 'mod-ed' a stereo headset into the helmet and just ran the cable to a small mp3 player on the side of the helmet. They are 4 yr old target speakers and they worked ok. I'm very excited to see how the edsets sound, especially at volume. ...Although, this is all assuming my connector/stereo/cb/intercom works like it's supposed to. Only had the bike for a week and haven't had a way to test headset part... fingers crossed!
  4. That would make sense. good place to put it too. But it has been removed now anyway.
  5. I say if you like the batt, keep it and ditch the sensor. I did the mod posted above two days ago. SUPER simple and worked perfectly for my new Odyssey Dry Cell. Start with the small resistor. There is some soldering involved though. If you don't know how, now is the perfect time to learn! Good luck!
  6. Ok turns out looks like they are #161 (the 194 shorted out and the right half light bar went dead ).. FYI for anyone looking for these. I had major trouble finding locally. And when I did they were like $2 a piece. I need several and want to have a few on hand for spares. Found a site online that sells them for about a quarter a piece. I bought 20 for 4 bucks plus shipping! http://www.memotronics.com
  7. Hmm, hard to say. It's very close though. The strap only goes to the front. it doesn't wrap all the way around to the rear. I'll drop a pic on the thread tonight when I start working on it again.
  8. Never heard of that before, but if it's for charging the batt that would make sense. It's easy to get to. never saw a charger with a connector like that. Would it be Old school OEM or aftermarket? Think I should keep it?
  9. Ok, FINALLY after TWO NIGHTS of tinkering with this things electrics, I got all the fancy rear running lights to turn on on the light bars that surround the back of the bike (I assume everyone knows what Im talking about). I have a bulb out and as anal is I am it's driving me crazy. popped open the plastic cover and pulled the bulb out. No identification what so ever! Arrrg. It a tiny little bulb with what looks like clear grease on the end of it. Does ANYONE know what kind of bulb this is and where I can get more??? Im sure this isn't the last one to go out on me... Also, while tracking down all the fancy lighting on this sucker, I found that there are a pair of wires that were hooked up directly to the battery and running to the rear of the bike under the seat... hmm. Thought they were going to the lights but turns out they are actually going to some kind of an electrical plug that is mounted just behind the passenger seat. Its round with a cap on the end. Too small to be a standard 12v automotive plug.. I can drop a pic in later but I have NO clue what this is for. Any ideas?? Thanks for the help guys
  10. I too, would like to place an order for my 88. Please let us know!
  11. Makes sense! Will this only provide power if the engine is running?
  12. hey mark Assuming my purchase of the 88 veture I have been posting about goes through this week, I'll be making reservations for sure and I'm in the DFW area. Only thing, I was planning on heading out Friday afternoon... But if a bunch of guys are leaving Sat maybe I could sit on my hands... hmmm...
  13. Ahh.. no, not yet... I'm going out with MasterGuns tomorrow for both of us to ride test and he can give me the low-down on the way back. If it looks good then Tuesday I'm going to get off work early, get a ride from the wife, pickup my 89 Honda Hawk from service shop and sacrifice it to get the Venture... I have a ride planned this coming weekend for our 2nd anniversary (posted question about Ft. Davis, actually). Supposed to leave this friday afternoon. No way I can spend 7 hrs without tunes, or my GPS... So I'm getting a list of 'critical' upgrades i need to do in that 48 hour period... Music and navigation being the big ones. It's gonna be tight... Needless to say, hope I do get it or I'm gonna have some big problems on my hand!
  14. Ya, that is a problem. Not much you can do at that point but back off.
  15. Yes, that all makes perfect sense to me. I will use a fuse. I like the idea of a relay, and understand how it works... However, I'm sure there is more than one kind of relay and I'm sure they have their capacites. How do I know what to look for for that type of application?
  16. I would have to say back off. Or I would at least... Rain is already adding numbers to the big saftey equation. If you have that much water, not only is it going to distract you but how can you even see well enough to make a good judgement on passing? Then there is the traction problem in the rain accel and decel... naw... I would back off.. even pull over for a few to get some distance. On a side note, if I ever have to pass a semi / transport / tractor-trailor when it's not raining I ALWAYS haul ass. Even if i'm not having to cross the yellow line... I'm not next to them any longer than I have to be. My main concern is a blown tire or debris coming at me. Think about it 14 - 18 - 22 tires, maybe more. ONE of them is bound to shoot up something at you and heaven forbid that one of those treads decide to come off. Larger peices can weigh big time lbs / kgs and at 50+ mph probably take you right off the bike... not for me, no sir!
  17. I believe this to be a generic electrical question, though this will be applied to 1st gen Venture... want to add a 12v accessory plug, directly wired from the battery through an on/off switch. (1) Should negative be grounded to the bike or should it be run back to the negative batt terminal on the battery? (i'm sure both would work, but what is best?) (2) As far as switches go, how do I make sure and get one that can handle the load. I'm sure they are rated and I know it's 12v but I think amps is what I should be looking for? Ya, electrical stuff, even the simple, has always eluded me. I would rather look ignorant and ask than look stupid after I fry something
  18. Wife and I are planning a ride out to Ft. Davis, TX. We want to head in a new direction and see things we haven't seen 5 times. We're planning on driving out on a friday afternoon and coming back Sunday, so it's going to be a quick trip. Just long enough to soak up the scenery for a day and head back the next. We will be riding mostly but there are some real nice mountan-ish roads out there (looks like) and some places here and there to stop and cork-off. Does anyone have any recomendations on any B & B or hotel/motels around that area? Any advice on roadways to see or avoid would be much appreciated too! Will be posting pics and review when we get back, too. Thanks!
  19. Really? Knew Canada had oil, didn't know #1 supplier. Funny you don't hear that anywhere else. It's always about the middle east... Dang media! Yes, I have heard about the tax structure there. Good friend of mine tells me about it. It works and it doesn't work.. same as the US. Goods and bads.
  20. Thats true. But with all do respect, gas has always been more expensive in export countries vs. US. I'm sure if Canada, UK, etc. had their own slew of oil and petrochem refineries like the US ya'll would be paying alot less than you are importing it overseas. The fact that it's cheap to you doesn't mean it's cheap to us. We (US) has been spoiled in many ways when it comes to gas/oil. When gas is 90 cents / gal, who wants to invest billions in alternate energy sources? It's crunch time now and everyone will have to start adjusting. No offense intended, just my
  21. I hear that man.. Not much you can do about mother nature! If Verizon would hurry up and finish their Fiber install on my street I could host it here on one of my servers if you went down.. but, no joy on that Best of luck to ya!
  22. Hey all. Anywhere will be better than the coast! But take this warning: If you are going to leave your area, best to head West or East, not North. I'm in Dallas / Ft. Worth area. We have been getting rain every few days last couple weeks. Reall heavy system just went through mon - wed. Ground is heavily saturated and waterways are full already. Perfect conditions for flooding up here. I'm sure most of N. Texas is the same. We won't get a hurricane or real bad winds, but flooding is expected to be bad. And if it Ikey turns North after houston, like they are predicting, then East TX will get some serious wind and rain. Just my . Whatever you do, be smart and safe! ~Chris
