  1. I generally agree, but the attraction for me is that west of Kerrville, the speed limit goes to 80 and my max cruise control speed is 78 because of the speedo error.
  2. I tried a sheepskin on my iron butt. I used luggage as a backrest, and pulled the sheepskin up (picture). However, after a while, the sheepskin crept down and forced me forward. I ended up riding on my, um.... , definitely not what was hoped for in the comfort department. Part of it is the shape of the RSTD bucket seat. It is some better when my wife rides pillion, as she keeps it pulled back. I still get forced forward, but not so badly. She *loves* it though, so I endure. I got this at IKEA for sheep. Er, cheap. 3. I went out this evening and adjusted my headlamps. Where the method above indicated a drop of 2" at 17', the HID was aimed 8" high at 17'. In other words, instead of sloping down, the beam was raising up. It was also at least 6" left of center. The net effect would surely be the HID beaming straight into an oncoming driver's eyes. That's asking for trouble. I think the message is that even though "they" say you do not need to adjust your HID bulbs, do. The good news is that the beam seems proper, with a clear cut off. The edges do raise up, as well. I'll retake the photos some other night. It is a steam bath out there! Dave
  4. Ah, you two lovebirds! Thanks for the suggestions! Dave
  5. I like Squidley because it honors your time in service to my country. Dave
  6. Awesome! Thanks!
  7. Thanks for the updated location. I am planning to stop at Tahquamenon on the way, so it seems there isn't much reason to visit Miner's. I wish I had a whole lot more time to visit the U.P. Dave
  8. Great information! Thanks! Have you been to Miner's Falls at Pictured Rocks? Is it worth the time, and is it RSTD and trailer friendly? Dave
  9. Great news! Marquette or Ispheming will be the perfect distance for lunch. Do you recall a place on the lake? Dave
  10. I think you will have to give us a long term report. Wood is very strong in compression, and not so strong in torsion or shearing. Those are the forces that the rack will experience. As a dolly, the wood is being compressed. The load is on the carpeted sections, transmitting the weight straight down to the wheels. The longitudinal sections just hold it together. As a rack, the wood is being forced to support the tipping moment of the cooler. You know, like a see-saw. It's strong looking wood, but I wouldn't be surprised if cracks start to develop in the long term. Let us know how it works for you! Dave
  11. I have a T-Mobile G1, the first Android Phone. The GPS is pretty good, and the mapping is straight from Google Maps. Navigation is really good, and considers live traffic conditions when it does routing. To use, you pull up the Map application. Then you do a search (it's a Google search) for what you want. You can optionally browse categories (e.g., auto repair or fast food). Then you can review the answers (which are pretty darn good, I must say). Pick the one you want, select directions to get the choice of a route map or using Navigation. It's all very intuitive, and built by Google (the Android operating system is a Google technology). By the way, you can search by voice if you prefer. It does a surprisingly good job, and I frequently use it when I am unsure of the spelling of something. Like I said, it works great on my 1st generation device. The later ones have more horsepower and are undoubtedly better. Dave
  12. Thank you for the replies. Yup, Torx. Why oh why did they add a new tool? I took off both rotors. I don't know why I have a T40, but I do. I got this thing (below). It'll be OK for the occasional tire changing. Next time, I'll time it better so that I can make it to a maintenance day before I change my tires! http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/370x370/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_4201.jpg Dave
  13. Uh, you just did! Sounds like a great reason to go back! Don't encourage him! So did you like it? Just one? Hmmm, more research needed! Same thing happened to me when my Ex asked "does this dress make me look fat?" Dave
  14. I need to remove the front rotors to work the HF bead breaker I have (without breaking the rotors). What the heck are those screws holding the covers on? Torx maybe? Dave
  15. How much tongue weight do you have with that configuration? Looks to be "plenty". Do you ride 2-up? I do like the foot-scraper (if that is what it is) idea. Very solid. Dave
  16. First off, you will enjoy the MD. You will learn a lot, and meet some really great people. I hope you do make it. Now your questions: you do not need anything for the carb sync. If you are experiencing issues like popping on deceleration, it will be good to talk about that first. You might want some vacuum caps. If you just want it to run smoother, no worries. What do you mean by "clutch need to be looked at"? Is there a particular issue you are having? Depending on your answer, you might need some consumables or perhaps parts to have on hand. For example, if you have clutch slipping, you might need a new clutch spring. It takes a few days to get them in (I got mine in today!). People will bring their projects with them. Very often there will be air horns installed, for example. If we know this, we can have some consumables like tape or connectors. I have always found it useful to bring a camera to capture blackmail photos or ideas for "upgrades". Bringing a seat is a good idea, if possible. I tend to stand all the time and go home with sore feet. In short, it is like a family reunion, only fun. Hope to see you! Dave
  17. Both those St. Ignace places look great! Thank you! Dave
  18. Excellent point! I am very hopeful that the taste lives up to the memories! Dave
  19. Thank you much! There is a place on Mackinaw City called Mackinaw Pastie and Cookie Co, on Jamet St, just to the west of I-75. There's another location by the ferry docks. I'm guessing you mean the one just off I-75? Would it survive the trip to the lighthouse so we can eat and look at the bridge? Dave
  20. Next time you are in Houston, we can reintroduce you to pasties. Warning: they are worn only by dancers who don't have their license. So, they tend to be young. You have been warned! LOL! You picked out all the good words! I think pasties are Cornish, brought to the UP by miners. BTW, the problem with flying only 6 feet is that you don't have time to set up for a graceful landing! Dave
  21. Here you go! http://www.warrensbakery.co.uk/products/large-steak-pasty.jpg
  22. Get your mind out of the gutter! I am riding up to the Upper Peninsula in a couple weeks, showing my bride some places I visited as a kid. One of my childhood memories is of the pasties we enjoyed. Unfortunately, as a kid I didn't pay much attention to where we got them. I vaguely remember getting them from trucks or stands... something only sort of permanent. So, does anyone have a recommendation for a good pasty joint? I think timing-wise, some place close to the Mackinaw Bridge on the St Ignace side would work. Otherwise, we are headng up to the Soo Locks, camping at Brimley SP, then heading across to the Keweenaw Peninsula via Munising and Marquette. Ideas? Dave
  23. I had a similar experience. I usually will run into the 30 or 40 mile range "on reserve" (like Goose says... if it is counting up, I am on reserve). One morning I left to work with only 7 miles on the count up. I ran out of gas. I worried about it, but didn't know what to think. "Coincidentally," my fuel pump failed about a week later. My theory is that the dying fuel pump was related to my prematurely being out of gas. Perhaps it couldn't pump strong enough to get the gas from the bottom of the tank to the carbs. I dunno. I'm just a bit worried on your behalf that you had a similar experience. You wouldn't think a 2009 would have a bad fuel pump, but... Dave
  24. I'll have a tail gunner with a camera. This is the section along the lake north of Houghton? I can't find Eagle River. Dave
  25. I am almost doing the opposite. My family has a conflicting family reunion in Battle Creek on 18 July.... After that, I am going up and across the Mighty Mac to spend the night in Sault Ste Marie. It's a trip I did countless times as a kid with my family, and I want to show it to my wife. We're camping, hopefully, although SSM seems light on campgrounds. Other lodging advice there? Then we are going across to the Keweenaw peninsula, since I've never been to the tip. I plan to stop at Tahquamenon Falls. Has anyone stayed at Fort Wilkins State Park? Then I need to get her to Green Bay and a flight home. :-( But I'm hoping to make time and pick up some states on my visited map. Fargo it is via Minneapolis, then Omaha. So I'm not avoiding Chicago (thank goodness!) but I do appreciate the advice on Hwy 28. Dave
