  1. I've got the front forks off, just finished re-greasing my steering head bearings. To change the fork oil, can I just unscrew the top caps where the air fittings go, dump out the old oil and add new?
  2. I spent 3 & a half hours today tearing the fairing apart to inspect and hopefully only grease my steering head bearings. Not fun. Will probably take a couple hours longer to put back together. I just used the pics in my service manual.
  3. Sorry to rub it in for those of you buried under snow! Well, no I'm not! I lived in the Buffalo NY are(Lackawanna) until I moved to Vegas 23 yrs ago. I'm the ride captain for the American Legion Post 8 ALR. We had 23 bikes for a 200 mile run today. Went to Mesquite for lunch, then back along Lake Meade to Vegas. Temp was in the mid 60's sun shinning. My RSV in the lead of 20 Harleys. The way it should be!!
  4. You can buy a Goldwing on e-bay for under $20,000.00 new. I agree, much better value than a HD!
  5. I had the #3 coil out and checked those wires. Believe me , I checked all the wiring. Cleaned the springs and brass washers in the plug wires. I even lightened the bike by a few pounds by getting rid of all of the components for the AIS. Guess I could have pulled the carbs and cleaned them myself, but had a good mechanic who has done carb work for a lot of years do it. Anyway, bike running like new again
  6. my number 3 cyl. wasn't firing, and if I drizzled gas into it at idle it would fire. So, had a mechanic friend pull and clean carbs, adjust valves and now bike is running on all 4 again. When you start up your bike, put your finger on the exhaust pipe near the cyl. head to see if it is getting hot. Be careful, they get hot quick. If you find one or more, that stay cold, you know which cylinder is not firing. Then you need to check for spark, if you have spark, it will be a carb problem.
  7. Had a seasoned mechanic pull carbs and check and clean them. Also had him adjust the valves as long as we were that far into it. He did not find anything really wrong with the number 3 carb, but thought one of the passages may have been blocked. Anyway, put it back together, and all 4 cylinders are now firing.
  8. Hey All, I received it just after Christmas. DVD is very informative! I'm a little vertically challenged 5"8" and while riding 2 up would struggle coming to a stop, bike wobbling. Now I use the power on, dragging the rear brake and have no problem coming to a nice smooth stop. I have contacted timgray, and will be sending it on when I get a reply. Thanks Bob
  9. In case you don't know it, all the road scenes on the Collision Traps Test are in Las Vegas.
  10. So, I've been trying to figure out why # 3 is not firing. I have spark, I can see fuel flowing into all 4 carbs from the needle which holds the slides while bike is running. If I drip a little gas into the carb for #3, the rpms come up and the pipe gets hot, so it def. a fuel problem ANyone know why I can see fuel flowing from around the needle seat which holds the slides in the carb, but cylinder doesn't fire unless I drip some fuel into it? I am planning to put back together and run it that way to see if the cylinder is firing under riding conditions. Maybe an idle circuit problem?
  11. After running down all the connections the only problem I could see is the connector to the reg/rectifier was a little loose. Took it apart and cleaned (didn't look dirty) bent the pins slightly and put back. Now seems tight. Started bike, and guess what. Running better, 1,2 and 4 are firing, 3 is not again. There is no spark to 3. I bought a set of used coils on e-bay from Pin Wall, will let you know what happens when I swap out the coil on #3.
  12. Where exactly is the ignitor? Looking trough the service manual I don't seem to see a location.
  13. Was having problem with #3 not firing. I checked for spark, plug was good but replaced anyway, cleaned all plug wire caps and check resistance, all no help. While bike was idleing I adjusted the sync screw for 3 and 4 a little bit each way, no help. ( I have a carbune ordered) I let bike sit a day, bolted tank back up and was going to run it that way for the weekend. When I startedthe bike, it's running worse. ONly on 2 cylinders now. #3 is now firing. # 1 and 4 are not. Any thoughts? Ok, so after more troubleshooting here's what I've found. Pulled the air box, hooked up a funnel with gas, kept bike running, there is gas going into all carbs when running, fuel pump is working., So, must be electrical
  14. Just put bike back on road after 2 months, it was running rough, #3 ? cylinder, (right rear) was not firing as the pipe did not heat up. After searching this site, I took apart the spark plug cap on this and found corrosion on the spring. Cleaned it up, and now running like new again.
  15. The cow had no tag on it, so CHP said that the ranchers would not claim it. Around $2000.00 damage to scoot. If I'd have had a trailer with me, I would have some beef for a long time to come.
  16. I hit a small (300 - 400 ) cow or steer in California yesterday. I was headed home to Vegas from a 3 day ride with 4 buddies, we had just turned onto 166 from the 101 near Santa Maria. There were cattle ranches on both sides of the road, all fenced in and I saw a coyote out in the middle of the field. Just up to around 55, I was leading the group when a black cow comes out of the bushes on the right side directly in front of me. It was around 30 feet away, saw me tried to stop and fell down. I had time to say "oh S t" and grab brakes. I ran over it's rear legs and the hind end hit the right side axle, fairing and crash bars. Thanks God or my guardian angel, I was able to stay up and stop up the road. The impact crushed the crash bars into the foot brake and floorboard pushing them into my foot and ankle. I'm sore and swollen, but think it's ok. When I climbed off t he VR, the cow was gone, my buddies said it dragged itself back into the bushes, where it died not long afterwards. My bud at the tailgunner has race training and accident avoidance training. He said there was no way I could have missed it. I'm grateful that it fell down or I probably wouldn't be typing this. That VR is a heavy, solid bike. We were able to borrow a crow bar from the CHP officer and bend the bars back so the bike was drivable, and continue on home to Vegas. The trip up and down the PCH 1 to Monterey and the back hills above Santa Barbara were awesome. Everyone stay safe out there!!
  17. I have an 01 RSV with BUB mufflers on it. It doesn't sound like a bike, sounds like a sports car with a V8 Not too overly loud, I really like the sound and so do my biker friends. My 30 year old son says my RSV sounds better than any Harley!
  18. If you have a garage door opener, now would be the time to install one inside the fairing. Mine is an older Sears model, the remote is 12v, so I soldered a wire across the switch, soldered two leads, one to pos and one to neg. then spliced it into the wire for the highbeam headlight. To open or close garage door, all you do is turn on the high-beam.
  19. Please put me on the list. Thanks
  20. Thanks for all the replies. I'll just go with the regular brake pads and not worry about having to replace rotors. Thanks again.
  21. I have an 01 RSV, are the rotors made of stainless steel. It's time for new pads and the ones I'm looking at say for stainless steel rotors only.
  22. Love this site and this is my first post. I just bought a 2001 RSV, and there was no tool kit which came with it. I tried my digital air pressure guage to check, but it wouldn't even go on the valve stem. My air hose inflater/deflater went on, but showed 0psi. I'm not sure it opened the Schrader valve. Any thoughts?
