  1. I have had both sizes on the front, and the smaller tire improves low speed steering very slightly. Went back to stock size for third tire and hardly noticed any difference going back.
  2. What a joke, war on drugs. They have been saying that for over 40 YEARS. Anybody can buy drugs to get high legally or illegally if that is their directed intention. Drugs fund criminal organizations and have created a enormous penal industry that employees more than 1 million workers in the US, one off our largest employers. If we decriminalized drugs and taxed it would solve some problems and create others. Marijuana is addictive to some, regardless of claims, but the actual physical affects are really quite benign. Other than the lost souls who get addicted to using this stuff constantly and the people who will drive while using, I don't see as much down side as keeping the status quo. US drug citizens are funding a Mexican Mafia destroying that country and exporting all their criminal elements here, where the money is. Legalizing meth, coke, and heroin .... that is just too much to stomach.
  3. Whoa you're right!!!!! Some things are best unnoticed.
  4. It seems most states are considering medical pot and a few legalization. I am not a future customer because I have enough trouble remembering where my keys are and I never want to listen to the Beatles White album again. I have been in public safety for 30+ years and honestly, after going to 1000's of medical calls, I cannot remember a single call as a result of marijuana usage. Although I have gone to vehicle accidents with pot involved, trust me though... nothing causes as many accidents as cell phones and texting. We go to calls every day for all other sorts of drugs including alcohol. We have a very big prison here and I would estimate 20% of the inmates were incarcerated for a 2nd or more pot offense. It seems to me not all these people need to be in prison. What do you think http://shellgames.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/old_hippie_very_old_hippies_1.jpg
  5. Bet you're right he got cut off and went Bozo. I ride like I'm invisible because so many don't see motorcycles as vehicles. A bad temper is Lexapro's best friend.
  6. I have downloaded about every song I have ever liked, like 30 gigs now. All legally of course. The strange part is Hendrix, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, don't do it anymore. Now the Carpenters, Grass Roots, and Mamas and Papas sound pretty good...jebus have I got old. I love listening to the original MTV hits too. I also have all the old swing and jazz from the 40's and 50's, I really enjoy that... brings back memories of my parents when they were young. I love having tunes on the bike.
  7. Well you can download about any song illegally on Limewire just be sure what you downlaod is mp3 3-7 megs. Something less than a meg is a virus probably. You can get most albums on utorrent. Again if you download music make sure your virus protection is up to date, it is almost impossible to put a virus in a true mp3, so there are fake ones with trogans. Not a big threat but can be a hassle if you get the wrong stuff. Limewire ......under tools/options/advanced unclick run at start up. Then it only runs when you want it.
  8. You can find Voyagers less ABS for $14000-15000, you can actually get it slightly cheaper than a new Venture. You can find lightly used 1 or 2 year old Ventures for $10000 everyday in the winter, provided your willing to travel to get it. If I was going to pay $15000 I'd buy a low miles 2 year old Ultra, but then again you have that excessive heat issue in slow traffic. Heat is something that is much less a problem on the Venture, my friends 1600 Nomad gets hotter at low speed than my Venture. Yamaha did a good job with heat diversion. You can find Electra Glide Standards and Road Kings for less than $11,000, some much less. Nomads for $6000. Now is a good time to buy used After riding all of these touring bikes, some many miles, including BMW, I am convinced the Venture was the most comfortable and best bargain.
  9. Colder than Tiger's wife here in Northern Mo.
  10. Bill The Nomad is also one of my favorites, you'll be glad you didn't get the 2009 1700cc. They have to get some bugs worked out in the frame, shocks, and the intense heat from the exhaust routing. The Nomad 1500 and 1600 were great, but you'll have to get a new seat for the 1600. The 1500 had a much better seat.
  11. Its a electrical connection start with the battery. It isn't likely that it's ignition module. On my 99 I had a terrible time tracing a electrical problem in a harness.
  12. I would hate giving up my cassette?!@#. I could have bought what I wanted, I did a 2000 mile trip on a borrowed Wing, rode a Ultra..... which I really liked, tried the Voyager....it gets very hot in high temps, and had already owned a older Venture. Wing wins in the radio stereo system and overall quality. Harley is the best finish and trim. Venture is the most comfortable and has the best stock seat. Kawa is not any of these. Undoubtedly the Venture can be bought used for less and is the best bang for the buck. Although Harleys are gettin pretty reasonable as we speak. The Wing is flawless but not as comfortable as the Venture, Harley is smaller but very much like the Yam. in feel, but not in engine. The Venture engine is decidedly superior to a 88 and similar,"in performance" to a 96 ci. I had a $15,000 Etrade account run up mad money to spend. I dropped Kaw from my buy list first, then Honda, looked for a Harley but found a 2004 Midnight Venture repo low miles for $7000, game over. Except for no FI, I like everything about Venture......although I think I have more 8 tracks than cassettes. Packed up with my checkered disco shirts. The older Kawa Voyager, while much uglier, but was probably a better motor choice and had less heat issues. I never understood the need to build bikes around a 45 Degree v twin other than looks and low end torque. I'm fine with superior engine designs. Try a Valkyrie or a Wing for a smooth motor. Never really had the Harley state of mind, even when I owned them.
  13. Seems like just a few days ago, I was at working and watching my computer waiting for the world to grind to a halt on 12/31/1999. I didn't get to party like it was 1999 though, I had to work. Ok now I'm waiting for the next end of the world date in 12/2012, I'm becoming afraid I'm going to die of old age before the world ends.
  14. I bought my 2nd Venture a 2004 Midnight 9000 miles low low price repo. It sat, my guess 6-9 months. The day of purchase I drove it from D.C. to Kansas City on a wing and a prayer. I notice its gas mileage is below average ... about 33 mpg not 38-40 like my old 99. Runs fairly good but the carbs on the left leaked when stopped. Get it home and start seafoam, no good. I know the floats are sticking. I sync the carbs which were way off, smoother but not by much, still krappy MPG. I aint up to a carb rebuild, so I take it to the shop, and shop rejets, the jets were green with corrosion, but he puts in the next larger pilot jet....which I didn't want. He said the floats were not sticking. The bike now backfires like popcorn. He readjusts the settings and the bike runs great, not as fast as the 99, but very good. Backfire constantly. I tighten all the exhaust bolts I can, the bottom front bolts are impossible with removing a pack of stuff. Backfire much better now. Gas milege sucks!!! 28 MPG. Back again to mechanic he says he changed the pilot back to stock. The next day the carb is leaking on the left side ahhggggg!!!! Back again to the mechanic, each visit of course costs more, up to 3 bills now. So now he is replacing the float needles, I wish I worked on this higher level stuff and had more knowledge. The mechanic's a great guy but these repeat trips are the norm not the exception in my experience. The worst part is I may get it back less than right again. The guy is an independent, the local Yamaha dealer's service is so horribly bad it makes this guy look highly competent in comparison. The Honda dealer has teenagers for mechanics, so you can guess how they do. If I had a Harley I would have many good service options available around here, but they shun metric. Opinions please http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/wtf-pics-tiger-man.jpg Yamaha certified mechanic on break in St Joseph Mo 4300
  15. Thanks guys it was the rubber ports
  16. The two rubber hoses going from the carb to intakes are cracked, only on the right side. Seems to be causing a miss. Checked the plugs too = at 20,000 miles= they looked new. Whats the trick to removing the two inside bolt monts. These outflow hoses are rubber mounted on a metal base with two connecting bolts, all one piece. I removed the fins for bolt access and cannot get to the inside bolt. Learned the hard way not to remove the cooling hose in the center to get access. there is no room for the allen wrench and no room to turn it.
  17. You'll probably regret buying one of those cheap off brands. I bought my kids a Honda 4 years ago and it's still in great shape. Some of their friends bought the no names and those scooters no longer run.
  18. I agree that a threat will probably stop what cooperation you received. I completely understand your anger and frustration. I had a electrical problem the dealer couldn't find for over a year but I finally fixed it with help from the board. Finding skilled bike techs isn't easy anywhere. The bike is good but not perfect and your bike has a serious undetected defect. Your letter indicates this defect is causing the rear end failure. Obviously whatever the problem is, it has not occurred very often with other people. The lemon issue is a more common theme on Harley forums, manufactures release 1000's of products and you were unlucky enough to buy the dud. I do feel you have legal recourse but that will be expensive also, your best bet is to keep working with the rep until fixed then sell it. When selling I'd be honest and say you had to have the rear end replaced. I'm not so sure I'd give all the details though. I would agree that from the perspective of a consumer they sold you a lemon. 3 times is too much. I read some of your previous posts and you've been dealing with this forever. I had a Kawasaki Vulcan that had a leak in a vacuum hose once. It took me forever to find it because nothing appeared wrong. After I finally found it myself, and after paying the dealer twice to fix nothing, the bike ran great... But I had come to hate the damn thing and sold it. I'm sure it was a great bike for the next owner.
  19. Thanks George it was the regulator

  20. By checking the three wire white plastic pin under the battery case with a volt meter I found a total short out of charging when heat built up. The wires showed 14 volts then went to 0 volts on all three wires when the running temp got high. If your stator is going out you will see a partial loss of voltage not a 100% loss. I only had this issue in hot weather so all fall and winter no problems, but the first warm day I rode in a parade and I barely made it home. GoergeS had some great suggestions and reasons for problems. I cleaned all connections everywhere and my voltage went from 13.9 to 14.3 with the bad rectifier. With motor heat though the bike would drop to the battery voltage of 12.6 and start declining from there. The discharging battery would last about 2 hours. There was probably some resistance in the connections due to corrosion, but corrosion was not the cause of charging faliure. With new rectifier, voltage is much more stable at 14.0 most of the time, I let the bike run for 30 minutes = stationary with no loss of voltage and charging remaining stable. I also tested on a road trip with long, stationary, motor running stops. I am no mechanic but I can tell you my shop would have just of replaced parts until the problem disappeared, so I am glad I waited and fixed it myself. I don't know how many times I have paid for a repair only to take it right back or later on just end up doing it myself. I had about a 50/50 split of opinions on stator over voltage regulator as the problem but is was the the regulator/rectifier which is directly behind your front wheel behind the radiator.
  21. I love it. I have a radio with a FM transmitter, which are hard to find now. You can run it direct in the input on the radio though. Traveled across the country on the bike with no loss of signal
  22. No not the stator. Well George S sent a bunch of suggestions, thanks George, and I tracked it down to the Retifiier. It is replaced and the problem is solved. It was hard to find because it was an intermittent problem. Sure cropped up at bad times though. The connections were all pretty dirty so cleaning all of them probably kept me from having a future problem.
  23. George I got to the plug under the battery with three white wires, while running but before heating up all wires showed the same about 14 volts. After going away for 10 minutes all wires showed 0 volts no electrical response at all in the pin. I had cleaned the pin and greased with electrical grease before starting any testing. The heat is shorting out something. George it is absolutely not the battery, I did all the checks of it last year when you replied and I just replaced the battery again last week with a full trickle charge done twice.
  24. The battery levels are good and complete charge. Are you talking about the pin that goes into rectifier or the one hidden under the seat?
  25. I have a new battery, I have checked the plastic pin to the retifier and cleaned it pushed the pins in and greased. When the bike gets hot, like riding in slow traffic it quits charging. Goes from charging 14.1 volts to whatever the charge in the battery is 12.6 volts usually and gradually down to below 12 volts. I have ordered a new retifier and will replace next week. Any one else have this.. 99 Venture thanx
