I think that it is like anything else, you must get used to it though practice. I locked up my rear once, and that was when I was trying to make it slide!!!!!!! I had to TRY try to make it slide!!!!!!!! My first bike (Kawasaki KZ1100D) had pegs only, my second bike (H-D Heritage Classic), third (1950 H-D FL but it has drum brakes, so locking them up is next to impossible), and fourth bike (Yamaha 2nd Gen RSV) all had/have boards. I guess i am used to them through proper practice. BUT I might lock them up in a panic stop, but I try to live what The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says: DON'T PANIC When I panic, I have lost control of a situation. Being in control of whatever vehicle I am driving 100% of the time is quite important for me to get to my final destination, intact. The only way I can keep from panicking is to practice the skills I need in emergency situations in a controlled environment. I learned this while in the US Navy. They would drill us to no ends on CPR, First Aid and our jobs while at General Quarters. It paid off at least once for me. I accidentally cut myself BAD, and not a drop of blood hit the floor as I applied direct pressure to the wound QUICKLY!!!!! I went to sick bay to get stitched up and the Hospital Corpsman was VERY surprised when I told him how bad I cut myself but he did not see any blood on me. He instructed me to take my hand away from the wound and the blood FLOWED!!!!! Once stitched up we reviewed the entire process and the only flaw we could find is how I cut myself in the first place, but all the emergency processes went so smoothly due to all the drilling I had. So I try to practice quick stops every time I ride!!! I think this is why I don't lock up the rear tire.

I keep seeing a recurring theme in the posts above: You can always learn, and we learn by repetition. So I should read books, view videos, and attend courses that teach safe riding techniques. And to repeat the training, so my brain absorbs it, as I have a very dense brain.....I learn slowly...

2009 VMax – Starting point for 3rd Gen Venture???

BUT currently the RSV is the lowest priced full dresser bike on the market. One reason is they did not update it. It still has a cassette deck!!!! When they update the RSV the price will go up..... dramatically.... It needs to price out at at LEAST 30% less than the competition- 21 replies

When I said this: I meant in market share, not at the drag strip. I guess I should have said so. If the 3rd Gen RSV has the same HP as the 2nd Gen VMax then I speculate that VMax sales would suffer. If the 3rd Gen RSV has less HP then the 2nd Gen VMax and it is a little difficult to bring the power to be equivalent with of the shelf parts, then some bikers will buy both bikes...- 21 replies

The EPA tier 2 emissions standards go into effect for motorcycles in the 2010 model year, so expect the current bike to stop at the end of 2009. I expect the new, EFI touring bike to come out in 2010 or to build more excitement 2011 model year however there WILL be a 3rd gen RSV produced. Here is what my cracked crystal ball says: It will be based on the 2nd gen VMax motor, trans and rear-end. This will help Yamaha spread the money it spent on R&D over more production units. It will, like the VMax, have ABS. It will NOT have more than 130 HP..... Yamaha will probably not have their touring bike competing with it's muscle bike.- 21 replies

It might save my life!!!!!! 2) The discussions here might motivate more Royal Star riders to become safer motorcycle riders!!!!!!! I don't want ANY of my riding family to get injured or killed due to a preventable accident. When you get on your bike you might as well paint a target on your jacket, as you are invisible to all other drivers on the road............ or at least that is my experience, so if I can become a better rider by reading a book, watching a DVD or attending a course I am all for it!!!! If that motivates you to do the same than we ALL win!!!!!!!

All, Please read the book Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well by David L. Hough. It has improved my riding and it goes into detail why you should NOT lay your bike down.

ABS is GREAT in an Emergency!!! Well worth the cost for the manufacturer to design and install. Knowing how to drive my bike at the edge of it's limits is priceless!!!! I try to practice proper motorcycle driving skills every time I ride. I have attended a MSF rider-course on two occasions and look forward to my next opportunity!!!!!! I also have Ride Like a Pro V DVD and view it at least monthly, and consciously try to practice the skills they teach every time I go out for a ride. Head and eyes, friction zone, leaning the bike in tight turns, etc... I hope that it makes me a safer rider, so I can keep my bike, my passenger and myself out of tight situations were I might have to use ABS. I do hope the 3rd gen RSV has ABS, but the MSRP will go up about $1,500 or more just for that. Sense the 2nd Gen VMax has it, I will have assume the 3rd Gen RSV will too... Oh, I have NEVER liked linked braking systems on a bike.

Why not make your own air filter housings and use the factory filters???? Buying chrome out of a catalog is nice. IMHO, making your own billet aluminum or chrome pieces is true customization. however the only customization I have done are safety improvements. Stable horn, extra tail light, replacing the lamps with brighter ones, etc, and some maintenance improvements like using Honda Moly60 on the splines. I guess I would rather put my money into the tank and a hotel room for an overnight ride rather than to bolt on some chrome, but it is all personal preference. Please post some photos of whatever you do to your bike!!!!!!

I was disregarding anything less than 100% Volumetric Efficiency (VE) to make sure the filters are over-sized. BTW, as randya eluded to, there are no reciprocating engines that have 100% VE.

Take the engine displacement in cubic centimeters and divide by 16.38706 to get cubic inches. Take the engine displacement in cubic inches and divide it by 1728 to get the displacement in cubic feet. Multiply that by the max RPM. That would be what the rev limiter is set at. Divide that by 2 as it is is a four stroke engine. Divide that by 2 as there are 2 air filters. Now that would be the MINIMUM CFM rating you need..... you should probably up it to make sure it is free flowing. Easy....

If your factory housing is in good shape, you might donate it to someone who has had front end damage to their bike. -
I had quite a bit of noise in my bike, and was unable to tell exactly where it was coming from as all the parts are mechanically, which means acoustically, coupled. The Moly60 paste took care of most of my bikes noise. It was easy to do, and was normal maintenance, but done a little early in the bikes life to extend the life of the drive shaft and connection parts. I hope it extends the service life of the rear-end too... you might be surprised!!!!! or not. Please post your findings no matter how it comes out.

I voted OTHER as I have not had the I basked installed. Have you greased ALL of your splines with Honda Moly60 paste? It took most of the whine out of my bike...... A little more was removed by using a small amount of Moly in a full synthetic gear lube in the rear end. To see what I did read the thread HERE DO NOT USE MOLY IN YOUR RSV or RSTD ENGINE OIL!!!!!!

The ENTIRE bike is covered (excluding some wear items like engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, coolant, brake and clutch adjustment [NOTE it does not say brake pads or clutch parts]) Look at page 10-7 of your owners manual. IF the dealer does not want to cover a part, call Yamaha customer service!!!!! Here is the pertinent quote There is more, but I got tired of typing as the PDF file security settings do not allow copying of text. In this case, the owners manual is your friend. PLEASE read it and show it to your dealer!!!!
