  1. Hang in there Don. Here is a personal observation for you. My dad and 7 of my 10 uncles smoked. As a kid I recall being at family gatherings in smoke filled rooms and choking. Close to 30 years ago my dad quit smoking cold turkey. I never though it would happen. None of my uncles quit smoking. 6 of the 7 uncles that did smoke died in their 50's or 60's from lung cancer, emphysema or throat cancer. The 7th one is in his 60's now with a nasty cough. My dad on the other hand passed away in January of '08 at the age of 84 and enjoyed pretty good health up until the last year or so. The remaining 3 that did not smoke are all in good health. Smoke, not me, never have, never will! Dennis
  2. What version of the software? I have streets and trips but was unable to open the file. Dennis
  3. That's true. From Lexington that is a decent day ride to Natural Bridge state park, Sky Bridge, Red River Gorge and on through Nada Tunnel. You would probably need 5 to 6 hours to make that trip and return to Lexington. Another great ride if you have all day is to take 89 out of Winchester or you could pick it up in Irvin and ride to McKee. After riding it you would wonder why anyone would ever want to ride the "Dragon". Dennis
  4. Thanks, I know the place, the building anyway. I was last there when it was "Mashed Taters" and my brother lives only a couple of blocks away from it. I may check it out today for lunch. Dennis
  5. OK Bob, tell me about those pork chops. It's too late for today but Thursday will come around again next week. Dennis
  6. Joe, come on down. I would happy to be your guide. I've grew up and work in Lexington and still live within a couple of hundred yards of the county line in Jessamine county. There are some nice rides around the horse farm areas and some great along the KY river palisades. Attached is a photo I shot while on a ride last fall. Along the way there is nice little motorcycle shop along the way called the "The Kickstand" http://www.thekickstandllc.com/. There is also a ferry over the KY river at Valley View (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_View_Ferry) that had a good road on either side of it. Just let me know when you want to visit. Dennis
  7. Eddie, I use 1and1.com to host my site. They are very inexpensive and have many tools to help you get your site going. My total cost for 2008 was less than $60. I get 500mb of space and 5,000 mb of traffic at no additional cost. A couple of months I've exceeded the traffic allotment and it was only a couple of dollars extra. I don't use my site to its full potential. I basically just post photos and files there for people to download and you have to know the link to get to it. Something like this: http://www.traynorphoto.com/07venture/ One of these days I may get around to developing the full site. Dennis
  8. Is this the Genesis part number that everyone is buying from Custom Dynamics? GEN32-1157 I've seen a couple of led boards and I want to make sure I order the right one. DT
  9. Just made my reservation for the 6th. I hope to make this MD and meet everyone. Dennis
  10. I check my oil about once a week when I am just riding around locally and daily when I'm on a long trip. I've never had to add oil on either of my RSVs or my Vstar 1100. It never moves off the mark. I was just wondering if anyone ever has to add oil between oil changes? DT
  11. I forgot to add, "Old age and treachery will win out over youth and skill"! DT
  12. I saw cyote61's signature line, "I hate Rap, it ain't real music it's crap, I hate Rap" and made me laugh about a rap music encounter I had last Friday and I thought I would share it here. While I don't care for Rap music I don't mind other listening to it as long as they don't force it on me. Anyway, I was driving through city traffic in the left lane of of a 4 lane street adjacent to the university campus. It was stop and go traffic and this small car pulled up along my right just a few feet in front of me. There were two young ladies in it, about 17 or 18 and they had the window rolled down with the RAP music cranked up obnoxiously loud and they were bouncing up and down and flailing there arms around as if to be dancing with the music and chanting along at the top of their voice. I looked them and thought what inconsiderate jerks. The sun was out and it had warmed up and the snow melt across the street had caused my windshield to become a mess. So I used my washer and I noticed that the wipers of my Tahoe were flipping washer fluid off to the right of the windshield. After seeing that this little devil took over within me and an evil little grin came on my face. I eased the truck up a few feet so that my windshield was in line with the obnoxious girl's open window. I just had to rewash my windshield and did. But the slow speed only threw the fluid a short way past the truck. So I switched them to high and let it rip again. The girl was startled and immediately quit chanting and quickly began rolling up her window. The light turned green and and pulled off with that grin on my face and the satisfaction knowing I had saved a few motorists from having to endure that noise while in traffic. I must say that that behavior is normally not my style and it will probably come back to haunt me some day, but it was funny. :rotfl: DT
  13. For ride planning check out the Harley Davidson ride planner site at: http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US&request_key=189847607 I've found it a pretty good way to lay out a route. I also use Microsoft Streets an Trips. Dennis
  14. In 2004 I had been making a little noise about wanting to get a bike. My wife just sort of listened and frowned. I had my eye on the Vstar 1100. Anyway, in June, near my birthday a coworker came to me one day told me that a truck had hit my Tahoe in the parking lot and I was needed there. I was pissed. How could someone do that with where I was parked. So I go to the door and look out for my truck and it wasn't there. In the spot was a new Vstar 1100 with birthday banners and balloons on it. I was surprised. It was a couple of days early but the sun was out and they were predicting rain for my birthday. She had bought it about a month before and stored it in a friend's garage. We rode the Vstar until late summer of '05. We had taken a few weekend trips with friends that rode larger bikes, Gold Wings, Vulcans and Intruders. After a couple of hundred miles we were ready to get off the bike. I began quietly looking for a bigger bike, mainly GWs but found I couldn't get comfortable on them. My wife and I had looked at an '04 Venture at the dealer and it sure looked comfy. One day I was out for a ride and stopped for a break at a gas station and there was a guy there on a Venture and I struck up a conversation with him. He told me a of a low mileage '04 Midnight in Louisville that a dealer was trying to sell for a customer. I couldn't wait until Monday to go look at it. It was a year old '04 with 2000 miles. I made a really cheap offer and the guy accepted. Since then I've been riding about 20k miles a year on the '04 and later on my '07. We've been on 3 long trips. In '06 we rode to CO, WY, SD and back, in '07 we went to Yellowstone and Glacier National parks and this past summer we rode to Utah. Here's our photo from our FL vacation last fall. And no, this isn't our normal riding apparel. It's jsut what we had on as we walked to dinner. We're hooked. Dennis
  15. That's a good question. I have the basic as well and I would like to have more. Like real time actual satellite or radar views. How much does the advanced cost? DT
  16. Saltydog, I've read that WEP encryption is just an anoyance to those that really want to hack into your network and it just keeps the honest people honest. I use WPA encryption and it works fine with the phone. Who knows if it's any better. Now that you have the phone here are few apps that I've found useful and/or fun to play with, most are free... White Pages mobile, Accufuel (I track my bike mileage on it), MotoChaser (biker video game), Now Playing (movie theater listing), Koi Pond (mindless fun), A Free Level (electronic level), Pandora (online radio), What's On (TV listings) and Shazam (identifies songs and artists, fun to play with) Have fun! DT
  17. I read my pop mail throughout the day but I have set to leave the mail on the server until I get home. I then download and clear the server from home and delete what I've already taken care of. I use insightbb.com for my mail. DT
  18. The $30 is for data only. They offer text plans in addition but I rarely text. This post was made from my iPhone. DT
  19. Yes, I've posted several time from an Iphone. DT
  20. I've had a 3G Iphone since September and I've been very pleased with it. I agree with everything Mashley said. It's very easy to use, just different. It takes cell phones to a new level. The directory/address book is great. It is simple to scroll through contacts in a flash and it has a favorites tab. You can call or email a contact at the touch of a finger. The base map is basically google maps and you can get will create a route for you. The basic applications are all useful. Weather, Stocks, Notepad, Email, Web browser, Maps, Youtube, etc. You don't use a stylus with the touchpad, just your finger. I've added a few applications out of the thousands that are available. Most that I've added were free and I paid a whopping $0.99 for a couple. I have a phone directory that is similar to switchboard.com, a motorcycle video game, Shazam (identifies music and artist), a level, a few solitaire games, a TV guide, a theater guide that will show you trailers and times for theaters near you location. If you can imagine it there is probably an application for it. When I first started using it I was very slow typing emails. I would hit the wrong key and then have to back up. After a while I learned that for most miss hits I could just continue and the phone would correct the word on the fly. My speed really improved then. The edge network is painfully slow for me. I am in a 3G area. If you are near an open WiFi network the phone will attempt to connect to it so it is possible to have high speed access within the edge network. I find it entertaining while I am waiting in the car while my wife is shopping in Walmart. I can surf the net, take care of emails, play games, watch podcasts or youtube. The application I use the least is the Ipod music. It works fine I just have other sources for music (XM and Zumo MP3s). I work with 2 guys that have Iphones and they also have work assigned Blackberrys. Both have said the Iphone user interface is much better and easier to use. I kept my same phone plan and added the $30 data package. My only complaint is that I don't seem to get as strong of a cell signal in rural areas as my wife's Motorola RAZR. I may only get 2 signal bars and she gets 5. However, 2 bars still seems to be enough. It's much more than a phone or PDA and I would hate to be without it. DT
  21. Yeah, we got hit with a lot of ice yesterday and last night and a couple inches of snow in central KY. A lot of power outages. I had to take my generator to my in-laws and hook it up so they could run their furnace (gas). So far we still have power at my house but I have a couple of trees that I'm going to have to finish taking down. Seems the ice only did about half of the job. DT
  22. In 2005 my wife and I rented a Road Glide in Phoenix and spent 5 days on it riding a loop up to the Grand Canyon. As has been said, the pipes are hot. It was rough at idle but smoothed out nicely once you started moving. It was underpowered riding 2 up with the bags loaded but it did handle very well. A new one with the bigger motor and rerouted pipes would probably be better. Our main complaint with it was the lack of passenger space. My wife is fairly petite and there was very little room between us. She found that uncomfortable because she had to spread her legs wider because she sat so close to me. DT
  23. I recently bought a Tourmaster Jett series 2 jacket and while I've only worn it once so far I think I'm going to like it. Very comfortable. It may not be as long as the transition jacket. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/39/10318/ITEM/Tour-Master-Jett-Series-2-Jacket.aspx DT
  24. I use the Mobil 1 racing 4T, 10W40 oil. I've been using it for the last 3 years with no problems. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil1_Racing_4T_10W-40.aspx Dennis

    Insurance claim

I believe the policies generally have a limit for aftermarket accessories. When my '04 was totaled they allowed $1000 for accessories and if I had more than that on it I was allowed to take off anything I wanted to get it down to the limit. DT
