CMS resoldering ?
6m459 replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One of the bikes 8 or so, P.O.'s had disabled it by disconnecting one of the wires to it at the plug from the CMS ! I re connected and all works as it should again. BTW, I still had some false alarms (oil & brake levels) indicated on the CMS when I re installed it. These seemed to go away once I changed out the blown bulb in the neutral light for a good one. I don't see the link but it was crap before and has been consistently good since. Any history on this ? Oh and one other thing. The bulbs in the dash that were blown, all seem to be numbered 158 but the closest resemblance to the bulb I could find at local supplier was numbered 194 so I have been using those. What am I letting myself in for? Cheers, Brian H. -
Hi, Here is another question stemming from the dive into my red bike's dash: Is the trip odo reset rubber cover available as a spare part from Yama ? I have been to the Yama mother ship's web site and looked on the parts diagrams but I don't see it identified as an available part. Any one know? Are there any crafty work arounds I should know about, like modifying a baby bottle nipple to act as a stand in or similar? Thanks, Brian H.

CMS resoldering ?
6m459 replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, that is how my other Venture works. Does anyone know if the red flashing warning light is an incandescent or an LED? The red light looks like an LED from the front of the dash but could it be another burned out bulb? (sorry don't have that part here with me.) I have some dark lithium grease, would that do? Otherwise I have a good silicone grease but it doesn't creep at all, doubt that would do. Suggestions on what type of grease ? Thanks, Brian H. -
Hi, Ok so I have my new red '84 Std Venture's dash apart, as some light bulbs needed changing. Surprisingly ALL the dash illumination lamps were blown. This seems odd but OK, lets see what happens with new ones. My limited experience with this bike has shown me that there is some erratic behaviour with the CMS indications, brake / oil indicators coming on spuriously & intermittently etc. I recall reading here about bad solder joints on the CMS commonly causing such things, so I brought the CMS to work with me this morning where I have a good BIG magnifying work light, appropriate solder and a proper size iron for the job. (and a bit of free time thankfully. ) Now, I have done electronic QC work in the past so I know what bad solder joints look like and how to reflow the solder etc. Under close inspection, I didn't see any obviously suspect joints on the lower CMS board. I went ahead anyways, and gingerly reheated & resoldered all the joints on the bottom pc board, concentrating on the ones associated with the wiring connectors. (I can't recall when I worked on a board that bubbled so much when heated though!) All look good and shinny and solid now. While I have this unit on the bench, is there any thing else I have over looked that good practice calls for to make it happy and reliable again? BTW, although I get CMS indications for oil and brake occasionally, I have yet to see the red flashing warning indicator work. Any clues here ? All thoughts and suggestions welcome. Thanks, Brian H. Looks nice but.................. So much fly by wire, scary! Great when its working but a B1TCH when its not. I like the simple life and I usually end up taking my vehicles into their geriatric years. Give me old school cables and hydraulics any day. Brian H.

clutch / brake res sight glass windows ?
6m459 replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
None of mine are transparent. They are all cloudy, except the rotten one which IS like swiss cheese! A bit of research on Ebay turned up this: Mstr Cyl Sight Glass Lens Honda Shadow VT 700 750 1100 I have emailed the vendor about his experience with Ventures but a quick comparison of the glass on my Maxim and the Ventures makes me think that if his will fit the Maxim, as he claims, then it looks like it should also fit the Venture. I have also emailed a local jeweller about buying a few 5/8" glass watch crystals from him. This forum thread was also interesting. I'll keep this thread up to date with what I find out. clutch / brake res sight glass windows ?

Hi. I have bought a replacement master cylinder on ebay. I'll swap out the one with the bad window and then do some experiments with it to see whats possible. Brake fluid is nasty stuff, I have some damage to my faring from a b/f leak. I some how doubt that plastic watch crystals would stand up to the b/f but a glass one would if I could get a good seal. I'll keep the thread posted on what I find out. Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont -
Thanks! I have emailed them to see if they are interested in M/C seat work. I'll keep the thread posted with the results. Cheers, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont

I'd like to get my seats & backrests recovered. Time was, I'd do it my self. I think those days are done. What are my options? Toronto area would be most convenient. Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont

Ya, I have concluded that she has been repainted. The pin striping has been painted over on the front fender and the lower rear lobes on the side panels are not matt black as was the case, I believe, when they left the factory. According to the paperwork that came with her, she has had quite a number of owners over the years so I really don't know whether the 21,000 kms on the clock is really 121,000 or 221,000 but I think she looks good and the price was right whatever the mileage. She started right up and came off the truck under her own power today. http://www12.asphost4free.com/easthope/bike4/P0002652-800.jpg Its the first bike I have ever test ridden before committing to buy and the first one that came into the garage under her own steam so hope fully I have a winner. Thanks for the pointers and advice. Cheers, Brian H.

Here are a couple of pics. Click on them for a BIG version. Hope you get your answers. http://www12.asphost4free.com/easthope/bike4/DCP_0701.JPG Do those side panels look repainted to you? http://www12.asphost4free.com/easthope/bike4/DCP_0703.JPG None of the other bikes in the pix are mine BTW. battery or stator?

I don't shift into 5th till I am doing 100 kmph / 60 mph or better. These are highway cruisers remember. Hope this helps. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont -
The runny stuff is hard to use on the under side of things. The putty type is great for that and stays where you put it regardless of orientation. I use the fibreglass tape, that is sold for drywall repairs, in my PermaPoxy/MightyPutty repairs. It works great. You know, the stuff that is a roll of fibreglass in strands arranged in a square mesh pattern about 1/16" x 1/16". I am sure it has a brand name but I can't think of it now. FirbreTape maybe ? Once I have the repair site set up, IE clean and clamped or whatever, I cut a piece of the f/g tape that is just larger than the repair I am doing. Then I cut and kneed the putty in approximately the right amount and then split the batch in two. I apply one of the halves to the repair site and work it in well. Then I lay the f/g tape over the top of that still soft epoxy and press it in so it stays put. Then, I put the second half of the batch of epoxy over the top of that and work it in and spread it out over the whole area. Voila, embeded fibreglass reenforcement. Once the epoxy is hardened up, I use an exacto knife or some fine snippers to snip the f/g strands one at a time around the edge of the epoxy patch. It seems to work well. Its not going to win any beauty contests but done on the back side with the putty pushed into the crack or gap it seems to make good strong repairs so far. I have been meaning to arrange the f/g tape so that its squares are on a diagonal to the crack or join I am epoxying together but so far I have forgotten at the key moments every time. Hope this is of interest. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont.

This weekend, my wife pointed out that a local drug store had some of the "as seen on TV" "mighty putty" stuff, of infomercial fame, on for 2 sticks for $10, so we bought some. I tried it out on a body panel repair yesterday and I have to say that, it looks, feels, smells and seems to work exactly like the PERMAPOXY #84315 stuff. I am reasonably certain that it is the same stuff despite what the folks at Permatex say. No guarantees expressed or implied, your mileage may vary, yada yada yada but I have convinced my self that they are the same. I'll keep you posted if things come un stuck. Hope this is of interest. what were they thinking?
6m459 replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Now that's what I'm talking about! BTW, I have already shelved the PVC shields from one of my cyclinder banks. When the other one gets in my way, I think its coming out too. Its crowded enough in there already without stuff like that. The inlet for the air that comes out the dash vents is pretty small. Its the one under the head light. You have to crouch down and look close to even see its there. I doubt that the area of the inlet equals the area of the vents so its no wonder the airflow is minimal. (BTW, I already have two blue leds mounted in this vent, one at either end. They're on all the time the ignition is on. I like the effect.) I think I am going to do as GeorgeS suggests and use that dash real estate for other things besides useless vents. Since removing the duct work also would free up some volume behind the dash, It would be nice to make some pockets to hold crap in as someone here suggested. Likely though, I'm too lazy for that these days & I'd rather just ride. I'll probably just block them off. Cheers, Brian H. -
Yup, RED is a standard. When I have her here, I'll take what ever shots you need to answer your questions. Cheers, Brian H.

Speaking of Mrs's, the guy I bought RED from said his wife wasn't happy with him selling the bike 'cause she found it the most comfortable to ride as passenger on. (He had had Goldwings and things before and now has some other big Honda model, but I didn't catch which one.) He said that his wife could actually fall asleep on the back while riding, it was so comfy. Now I don't doubt that its a comfy ride but a passenger falling asleep sounds dangerous to me. I guess I don't really know how he feels about the wife but I think I would tend to discourage my passengers from doing that regardless. Thoughts ? Brian H.

Bottoming out was the big problem with my '84 till I put in the Progressives. She came with OEM springs and at 20 k miles was all but un rideable till the upgrade. Even the transition from roadway to driveway at the bottom of my drive in our 20 y.o. subdivision would cause the front shocks to bottom out. Cheers, Brian H Uxbringe Ont

Sorry but I don't have the RHS vent. Never had it and also have an ugly hole. Sorry. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont -
Well, I guess I've got it bad. I've bought a second '84 Venture. I now own 2, the blue one and a red one. I pick up the new red bike next Saturday. It has some issues but seems mostly in good order. Body work, rear brakes, the usual kind of old Venture stuff, but only 21,000 Kilometers! Lots of tinkering postential. A bike to ride and a bike to tinker with, what could be better? Old blue ran well all the way over and back, about 110 km's total. I was afraid she'd sulk but nope, she seemed good with it. The sun came out on the way home which hopefully is a good omen too. I'll keep you posted. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont

My old blue '84 has historically had a quirk where the coolant would gradually and mysteriously disappear over time. Also, a green snot like substance would accumulate in the air box. Wisdom here and elsewhere had it that perhaps a head gasket was blown. The bike always ran like a champ so I eventually discounted (ie didn't want to believe ) this theory. I decided since the bike ran so well I'd just put up with topping up the coolant from time to time. My alternate, and preferred theory was that it was a leak in the engine's crankcase breather system that was diverting foamed coolant into the airbox via the vaccum line. Either way. I decided to just put up with it since the bike ran well otherwise. Early this year I began to have rough / uncertain idle and hard starting problems. Otherwise the bike still ran well. I applied SEAFOAM since it had finally become easily available locally. (It was on sale even!) I ran the recommened 1 oz / gal concentration in several tank fulls of gas. The improvement was quick and dramatic. The idle smoothed out and became nice and regular, starts got easier and MAN I had all kinds of power on the highway. I got to love on ramps all over again! That SEAFOAM stuff is good juju to be sure! What I don't really understand is that after the S/F treatments, my coolant stopped disappearing and now the level remains constant for weeks and months at a time. To be fair, I havent logged as many miiles as usual this summer as it has been SO rainy but still, I think its fair to say that the coolant consumption has dropped to nil. I haven't checked the airbox / snot situatioin yet but I expect to find no more snot accumulation in there when I do. Lazy, er happier riding it than dismantling it sorry. I am happy that this problem has gone away but I am puzzled about the connection between S/F in the gas and any improvement in my coolant consumption / snot in airbox problems. Can any one here offer any theories as to how the two are related? Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont.

Ok thanks I used option 1 and just selected a few small inocuous non animated smileys. If I had none selected, I still got the objectionable one. Option 2 worked too but didn't give me the link buttons to insert pictures and links and format text etc. I would miss those so I didn't use this method. Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont

Battery drain problems
6m459 replied to Iowa Guy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hi, This brings to mind a similar incident that happened to me, a couple of years ago, that you might want to think about. I won some electric gloves in a draw. Lucky me! When I used them though, I used them flat out IE full on all the time, since I didn't win the associated device to regulate the heat by varying the duty cycle of the applied power. (I regulated the temperature by unpluging them when it got un comfy) Long story short, not long after that, I needed a new stator coil. Now it might be that it was the coils time and it all would have happened anyways but, I blame the heavy load from the gloves for killing the coil. I have no measured facts & figures to back up this suspicion but it remains my operating theory. The old stator (RHS in the pic) was quite dark and crispy looking on removal. Your lighting load may be causing you similar future troubles. That extra current has to originate at the stator coil city or highway. The stators on these bikes are only rated for so much current and beyond that, all bets are off. Your bike might be trying to tell you a more important message. I'd lighten the current load as a first line of defense by using LED lighting where ever possible. Just a thought, hope it helps. Brian H. C.E.T. Uxbridge Ont
